QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 19, 2016 -> 08:19 AM) Trump's hired a Goldman Sachs guy to run his fundraising, he's accepted a boatload of cash from Sheldon Adelson (seriously, how does this guy have hundreds of millions of dollars to burn regularly?), and he's announced a joint fundraising plan with the GOP. So much for getting money out of politics (lol if you ever believed that). Trump set to headline first campaign fundraiser in Albuquerque Tuesday Asking $10k/plate. More of Trump getting money out of politics.

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ May 24, 2016 -> 10:12 AM) That's my mom. Sometimes I'm like damn ma, take it down a couple notches We've had to limit my dad to "okay, you get to talk to three people today" while on vacation because otherwise he'll just chat with strangers forever.

QUOTE (Tex @ May 24, 2016 -> 09:55 AM) You are polling people who spend an inordinate amount of hours on a forum about their social habits? haha, exactly Having to travel for work a lot, more often than not by myself, helped a bunch. I'd still rather spend time with a small number of close friends and family than big crowds, and still awkward when I don't know most of the people really well. I compare that to my dad who will strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 22, 2016 -> 06:50 AM) I read he got himself into trouble recently with some things he said on stage, and also he had tweeted some pro gun comments that he had to walk back. It's hard to really take in what he says at face value, he was in the middle of an extremely traumatic event that no doubt affected him I don't know about the tweet, but he's been open about being pretty conservative in the past. Music is still hilarious/a great time.

I didn't realize this was a thing until we were already in Puerto Rico for our wedding, so my groomsmen got a flask with some local rum that I purchased at the liquor store down the street from the hotel. I am a bad friend/brother For the wedding I was best man in, my friend got custom mugs made up with our names engraved on a little plaque plus a personalized little knife.

QUOTE (soxfan49 @ May 19, 2016 -> 07:37 PM) Well, it's official. I'm going to Maui. Can't believe I never really researched it. I was too focused on Kauai. Thanks to Steve and Kevo It's a bit of a drive from the Ka'annapali area, but I'd really recommend driving to the top of Haleakala if you like mountains/parks/etc at all. It's like being on top of the world. Road to Hana is also fun.

QUOTE (shipps @ May 20, 2016 -> 11:18 AM) Maybe if airlines starting charging for carry-on's INSTEAD of charging for check-in bags we can alleviate people having all these damn bags for carry-on and lines will go a hell of a lot faster. NEVER! I will pack for a week trip in carry-ons if I can to avoid checked baggage at Midway.

Buehrle how do you feel about Trump now that he's decidedly not 'getting money out of politics' but is instead pursuing standard GOP fundraising?

Something like PODS or equivalent might work for you.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 19, 2016 -> 05:13 PM) I did. I also know US history. More corrupt off the top of my head include Aaron Burr, Andrew Jackson, Al Smith, Franklin Pierce and Richard Nixon. The first three were all associated with Tammany Hall, Pierce essentially tricked his way into the presidency and hastened the road to the civil war and Nixon, well, that needs no explaining. Teapot dome was pretty great.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 19, 2016 -> 03:10 PM) This makes a lot of sense, but many would still say it's bending over too far to accommodate the private insurance companies' profit margins...that threat of the private insurance market collapsing has been used as a "threat" for years and year, just like "death panels" as a scare tactic. How did the Romney/Massachusetts plan account for this issue? I don't think that's something that falls out of private insurance industry lobbying but something that comes out of standard healthcare economics. Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of single payer-style UHC over the chimera we got, but guaranteed issue pretty much requires the mandate. The Mass plan was functionally very similar to ACA in this regard, and it too included an individual mandate.

QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ May 19, 2016 -> 02:36 PM) Huh? Of course it is. How would you deduce that from what I said? You called him a criminal but he hasn't been court-martialed yet, right?

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ May 17, 2016 -> 06:10 PM) A couple things that bothered me about Obama's presidency were the Iran deal and the prisoner exchange for Bergdahl. I know he had a hostile congress and that made things difficult at times. I want everyone to get health care as much as the next person but I really dont like some aspects of Obamacare, particularly that they fine people who cant afford to pay for health care. Dont get me wrong, I think its great that people who were previously uninsurable are guaranteed coverage. I just genuinely dont understand the logic of fining people who cant afford insurance. I'll try to explain it the best I can, but the "individual mandate" isn't about "finding people who can't afford insurance." It's an disincentive/stick for people who would otherwise choose to not have insurance; now, in practice, there's going to be a healthy mix of people who 'choose' not to have health insurance because they can't afford it or could only marginally afford it and choose to spend that money on something else, and then there's a lot of younger, generally healthy people who would just otherwise choose to go without insurance and hope for the best. When you are going to institute regulatory requirements like guaranteed issue that mean you can get insurance regardless of any current or previous illnesses, there's a big economic incentive to not carry insurance until you need it and then purchase it when you do. The problem is that this creates a death spiral in the insurance market place since insurance companies are left without a large pool of insurance premiums being paid by people who don't necessarily need to draw on their insurance. What the law attempts to do is to eliminate or minimize the people who would fall into "can't afford insurance and would be fined" category a few of ways. The first is the massive expansion of Medicaid, which was unfortunately gutted by Roberts in the 2012 Obamacare ruling over the individual mandate. Several million more people who are marginally above the poverty line would have Medicaid coverage today instead of needing to pay for private insurance or pay the fine. The second way to was require parental policies to cover children to the age of 26--this keeps lots of young adults who would be the most likely to voluntarily forego insurance on more affordable employer-sponsored family plans. The third way is through the subsidies available through the federal and state exchanges. This provides an incentive/carrot for people to choose insurance over the fine, even if the insurance is a little more expensive. I'm sure there are better write-ups out there, but that's the basic logic behind the individual mandate. Without that but with the other regulatory improvements, the private insurance market would collapse.

QUOTE (shipps @ May 19, 2016 -> 12:52 PM) I really like Portugal. the man but I have to be honest, the lyrics they sing are about as atheist as it gets and I consider myself a christian. Not a crazy conservative bible thumping Christian, just something that I believe in. I feel kind of bad liking them. There is plenty songs that I have loved over the years with crazy lyrics but its something about their lyrics that feel pretty bad. Do you guys ever run into liking music that doesnt quite line up with your beliefs? Sort of the opposite for me, I'm more or less atheist without really caring one way or the other but I can enjoy music with religious undertones, e.g. some Iron & Wine stuff or Sufjan Stevens.

I remember seeing Theranos and Holmes hyped a ton a few years ago, then nothing, then starting late last year the story of their complete collapse and potential criminal charges.

That is an easier argument to make when your income gives you a fair amount of disposable income, though.

If you had bought basically any 911 other than the late 90's/early 00's one five years ago, you'd double your money if you sold it now (or triple or quadruple, depending on the specific model). What I'm saying is that you'd be a fool to not buy a luxury sports car!
