  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 7, 2014 -> 11:47 AM) Damn. Going to investigate the stack now. Found the access panel to the main valve shut off which is good I should add that about $5-6k of that was replacing the furnace that went out and caused the problems in the first place, but still, $10k and having a lot of your house torn up or patching some drywall and painting.
  2. You need to evaluate the potential costs of something bursting versus patching some drywall. FWIW the week before we closed on our house, the pipes burst, and it did $17k worth of damage. This is in a smaller house. Might be safest to call a plumber or something here.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 7, 2014 -> 11:03 AM) No, the frozen ones run up the exterior wall in my house, and that whole stack is frozen (upstairs bathroom, kitchen sink). Not really in favor of ripping up walls. short of cranking the heat and hoping that the ambient temperature rises enough, I don't know that there's anything you can do without cutting some holes.
  4. some background on what's causing this record weather http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_North_Am...an_polar_vortex
  5. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) I used to build my own race cars and was an owner operator (truck driver) based on that experience along with cold Chicago weather your either not getting enough juice to the starter from the battery or the starter is is just worn out. When I first bought my own rig 10 years ago one of the first things I was told by other owner operators was that if the rig had any problems they would show when it got very cold over the winter. Lead-acid batteries start re-rating once it gets too cold. That's while you'll see Cold Cranking Amps or "CCA" on a battery. That's the rating at 0F, and it'll only get worse from there. So your battery is pushing out substantially less amperage, and now you're trying to turn over an engine that's full of really think oil on top of it (anyone who's driven a manual transmission in this type of weather will know how 'thick' the fluid feels). If there isn't a gauge, you could always use a multimeter to read the Voltage (VDC) of the battery as well. If the battery is drained of charge and you can get someone to give you a lift, you could try bringing it into any auto parts store to have it tested, and they might even be able to charge it for you. A local mechanic's shop would probably help out too.
  6. A lot of electronics aren't rated to extremely cold temperatures, but I'd imagine that automotive ones, at least the important bits, are rated to -35 or so.
  7. Mike Huckabee links brain dead California girl to Nazi death camps, forced abortions
  8. I don't know what I'm supposed to think about that photo anyway. Few people would notice a couple of guys on that part of the bridge from that far away anyway, and even if they did, they could easily be workers.
  9. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) http://carletonnow.carleton.ca/february-20...y-cold-weather/ Oh yeah, I know it's just the ridiculous cold causing contraction. Still, I popped my head into the attic and outside to make sure there wasn't anything obviously wrong e.g. ice pulling off the gutters or something.
  10. My house is making loud "popping" noises occasionally right now
  11. I'm sure some lawyer could find a way to make you at least partially responsible
  12. QUOTE (SnB @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 08:50 AM) I work w/ a bunch of middle age men who still think working at home is for the lazy. So I'm at work today. It was damn cold out there this morning, but I can't say it was EXTREMELY colder than a regular frigid day. Wind exposure would be the big difference today. Standing on my back steps out of the wind in -15F was cold, but walking out the front door into the wind was a completely different story.
  13. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 08:34 AM) They sold out to stop Gore yesterday and for the most it worked, minus the two big runs by Kaepernick. On one of those it looked like it was just blown contain by the blitzer, he tried going inside the blocker and Kaepernick was able to turn it into a huge run on 3rd down IIRC. If he had stayed outside, Kaepernick couldn't have done that.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 08:15 AM) This is idiotic. Technically, "Alaska" does comprise a very large swath of this country and a big part of it routinely experiences weather like this. But no, the Northern Plains and Northern Rockies states don't routinely have wind chills of -50F. Working from home today. Was supposed to drive up to Elgin to do some (indoors) field work, but that got cancelled so I texted my boss. I'll be just as productive if not more so working from home than being in the office today. edit: I'll be stepping outside today just to see what this ridiculous level of cold actually feels like since I don't plan on trekking to the Arctic any time soon.
  15. no no that's what the FEMA death camps are for!!!
  16. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 11:22 AM) Couldn't they have just laid track on the median of 294 for a Metra ring route? No NIMBY's (294 is louder than any train), no bulldozing anything (its already been bulldozed) and its a direct bypass to 294's delightful little brand of hell. Its a natural choice. The median on 294 is two shoulders and a jersey barrier, not exactly train-tracks-and-station width you see on 90-94
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) The difference between in and out of the playoffs for the Bears right there, perhaps. Sigh. I wonder how much of an issue all of the defensive injuries were for the ST unit.
  18. Weird, I'm fb friends with at least five teachers and none of them post anything about work, aside from the one who is a coach and posts about his team. Four of the five don't really post much of anything, to be fair.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 02:16 PM) Sorry, I actually didn't mean to link to the safeties, which was one of the better lists. I meant the total D. First you don't check this thread hourly to see if something has already been discussed, then you screw up a link. Man you are just the worst.
  20. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 02:06 PM) I thought about all these posts about the dogs in the snow as I was reading my facebook wall. A couple of people posted something about providing shelter for your pets from the cold/snow. The funny part was the picture attached showed a pure white dog laying in the snow. It looked an awful lot like a husky, which are pretty much built to spend a lot of time in cold/snow. Arctic sled dogs do not spend any portion of their lives indoors.
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) This was a depressing list. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1908126...nt-crop/page/13 I've been wondering what the potential defensive FA targets could be since one of the main arguments against Cutler was spending money on the defense.
  22. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 12:49 PM) I. F*cking. Hate. Teachers. On. Facebook. One of them just posted a link to an article that some Minnesota schools have canceled school for Monday already because of the expected temperature with the words "hint, hint Illinois!" holyf***ings*** First of all, they'll cancel school, but come on, she will have been off of work for SEVENTEEN straight days at that point. SEVENTEEN! Do you really need another?? Why are all these b****es so fat and lazy!? My wife is hoping they don't because too many snow days will f*** up our travel plans
  23. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 11:19 AM) Based on the stories i've watch on North Korean prison camps and the complete mind f*** the government has on its people, I absolutely buy this as a possibility. tl;dr we know so damn little about that country, and what little we do knew can be pretty damn wacky, that it's always at least plausible.
