2013-2014 NFL Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) This was a depressing list. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1908126...nt-crop/page/13 I've been wondering what the potential defensive FA targets could be since one of the main arguments against Cutler was spending money on the defense.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 12:49 PM) I. F*cking. Hate. Teachers. On. Facebook. One of them just posted a link to an article that some Minnesota schools have canceled school for Monday already because of the expected temperature with the words "hint, hint Illinois!" holyf***ings*** First of all, they'll cancel school, but come on, she will have been off of work for SEVENTEEN straight days at that point. SEVENTEEN! Do you really need another?? Why are all these b****es so fat and lazy!? My wife is hoping they don't because too many snow days will f*** up our travel plans

North Korea
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 11:19 AM) Based on the stories i've watch on North Korean prison camps and the complete mind f*** the government has on its people, I absolutely buy this as a possibility. tl;dr we know so damn little about that country, and what little we do knew can be pretty damn wacky, that it's always at least plausible.

US Prison Admissions are at a Two-Decade Low
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 11:10 AM) I'm sure the general shift of most states/counties away from criminalizing lesser drug offenses due to monetary restraints is a big reason for this. from the comments:

Elgin-O'Hare Expressway Expansion
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) Google and/or the CTA website doesn't do this for you? SF's works like Google Maps in that it knows your current position. It also knows every possible form of public transportation, its cost, and whether its currently running on schedule or not. It can tell you how to take multiple modes of public transportation to get from A to B in real time, and it's as easy as using Google Navigate on your phone instead of having to go to a website. As far as I know, there isn't something comparable for Chicago. http://tripplanner.transit.511.org/mtc/XSL...ST2?language=en

Corporate Profits vs Hiring
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 11:01 AM) Silicon Valley / San Francisco / Oakland start-up guys have some of the most douchey quotes and loony ideas i've ever seen. Peter Thiel is supposedly building a giant boat/island off the coast that will have no worker regulations and such, his own personal "slave ship" as it is lovingly referred. It's pretty chock-full of brogrammer libertarians who have massively inflated egos.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
No, Obamacare Wasn't a "Republican" Proposal Scott Lemeuix has had several posts lately really pushing back against the idea that Obamacare was a "Republican" or "Heritage" plan. They've been aimed at people attacking Obama from the left for "not even trying" for single-payer and instead just going with a conservative policy proposal, but I think he does a really good job pointing out that, while the PPACA may be far from ideal (from the let's perspective), the core components of it have never been 'conservative.' from one of his earlier blog posts, his exhaustive list of the similarities between the Heritage plan and Obamacare:

Chicago could also use an app like San Francisco has that tells you exactly how to get from where you are to where you want to go using public transportation based on schedules, fares and time.

Corporate Profits vs Hiring
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 10:44 AM) http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/12/20/g...g-protest/?_r=0 an interesting story i have been following a little. Why do so many people think this is something that doesn't make them look loony? Back in April, the main substation that powers Silicon Valley was vandalized, but vandalized isn't really the right word because it was a very precise and deliberate attack by people who knew what they were doing. The assumed target was Silicon Valley, but nobody's been caught and there isn't a real motive out there yet. http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_23036583/sho...-silicon-valley

Elgin-O'Hare Expressway Expansion
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 10:42 AM) There are places it could be done very easily. For example, the green line, just before it hits the loop goes literally right OVER the Ogilvie station tracks. I mean, all you need is a friggin stairwell. For that matter, there should be a tunnel between Union and Ogilvie. It'd be nice to be able to take Metra in from the western suburbs to a central station and then easily transfer to the blue or red lines.

Somewhat related to the "small victories where you can get them" is the Bloomingdale bike/walking trail conversion. http://urbanland.uli.org/infrastructure-tr...-to-next-level/

Connecting the CTA trains to Metra would be awesome as well, but not really possible

2013-2014 NFL Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) The Colts had to have an angel buyer buy the last 1200 tickets for their playoff game to keep it from being a blackout. I wonder what their excuse is? NFL ticket prices are ridiculous, but someone will still pay to prevent the blackout rule?

You can see the game so much better on TV, anyway. Going to a football game is just about the social experience, and it won't be very enjoyable if it's -35 with the windchill

Elgin-O'Hare Expressway Expansion
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 09:22 AM) I tend to agree, though I'd really like to see better rail build-out along with the roads. Both are needed, IMO, to make the most effective use of capital funds. An inter-suburb Metra ring would be nice.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 3, 2014 -> 08:49 AM) Yep, that's exactly why snow sucks so much. That's why people are whining. Bad winter drivers make it worse. It's not something to be messed with. If WRX's didn't get such crappy MPG my next car would be AWD. I came home yesterday to the pleasant surprise that my wife had shoveled our whole driveway.
