QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 07:57 AM) I got a hunter thermo for upstairs that had that feature but it SUCKS. It barely ever recognizes it, the thing crashes all the time and overall blows. It looks like Honeywell has one, but I have zero confidence in it working. Our house is old with additions and we have 3 zones. Upstairs our bedroom is the furthest room from the thermostat and is the only one with the vents open. The only other option is to move the thermostat. So terrible. Nah, only have a Nest that I got from work for free. Yeah, we have tons of glass and so the temp fluctuates a lot more in those areas. Some day when I am in a financial position to do so, I am going to make the house a lot more energy efficient so the temps stay much more constant throughout the house.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 07:49 AM) The one thing its missing is the ability to have a remote module to detect temperature where a nest isnt located. I REALLY need that in my new house and havent found anything yet that I like. I think eventually with the google stuff maybe it will be able to use the phone to do this? Who knows. other than that its pretty f***ing awesome. It learns how you like the temp and sets it. If you are gone, it turns it down. Its rock solid hardware with reliable software. Yeah, I am in the same boat...I'm guessing you have areas/rooms in your house where the temp isn't the same as wherever your thermo...pretty shocking that no one has done that yet. The one we have has the basic functionality of the Nest...it can be adjusted remotely and supposedly learns like the Nest does, but I highly doubt the software is anywhere near as good as the Nest's. Have you bought their smoke alarm yet?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 07:47 AM) It's pretty good. You approach the machine (ours has a few selections of beers) and if your last choice is out it will recommend another on the app we built. Of course this is after it checks your consumption for the day and in the future check if you have meetings left on your calendar. Next gen Identity. This is about the only reason I miss working in a law firm as opposed to a large company...drinking was encouraged...

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 07:32 AM) I don't mean security/encryption of the data. I mean the use of it. Disclosure: I own a Nest thermostat. My chief concern is because Google as a company isn't what Nest was as a company, Google is primarily an ad company that mines personal data from people. To make it a finer point, my Nest is a product that does a very specific thing -- I want the Nest to know I'm home so it knows to turn my heat or air on -- NOT because I want Google to know I'm home, or how long I'm home, or how many times I enter my living room. I think these concerns are very real in the face of what Google is and does. What I do in my home is MY business -- NOT Googles. If this data is ONLY used to operate my thermostat, I have no issues with it...but if it's compiled/saved/stored for any other reason, I have a big problem with it. I also don't feel that's out of line, this isn't Chrome or some free app Google gave me...I paid almost 300$ for this. What are your thoughts so far about the Nest? I was very interested in buying it when I first read about it, but my company (the power company in Nevada) has a program where we distribute other smart thermostats to customers for free, so it didn't make a ton of sense to shell out the cash for the Nest. Do you think it is head and shoulders above most other smart thermostats out there?

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 07:24 AM) Well what do you mean by privacy? The hardware has a cryptic key based on internet security standards that is accessed by the software on the internet. Its very secure. The next piece becomes your device as the identifier similar to what auto manufacturers will be rolling out in the next few years as ways to enter your car and identify you as a user. This stuff is already in place in other forms, its just another way to do it. Right now the nest depends on movement etc to detect where you are in the house and your patterns but pretty soon it will be able to know when you are close to home based on google maps and will be able to start your heater or AC so its comfortable when you get in. I can get really deep into this as its my field. We've already developed this technology to go so far as installing a kegerator in our office that knows who you are, what your last beer preference is and your allotted amount per day after work. Where can I buy one?

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 12:02 PM) Must be location. I live in a town of around 1000 people and I can go to the bar and have 5 craft beers with a burger and fries for around $20 including tip. Since it's such a small town, everybody knows everybody and if you're a regular typically every 3rd or 4th beer is on the house. Yeah, those are Dickeyville prices!

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 06:42 AM) When I was living in Chicago I did this. I found myself going to many more games and going to establishments to watch them on TV there. Yea, I missed some games here and there, but it was a much enjoyable experience than just plopping on the couch like a slug. And then you spent all the money you were saving on your cable package on beers.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 07:25 PM) Kind of, but if Davidson's ready for an extended shot then Gillaspie's gotta hit the road, and there's no room on the roster to stash both of them. There's no way to get anything for Gillaspie at that point, whereas you might be able to get something right now. Same with De Aza, only his value was probably higher to begin with and thus there is more at risk by letting him platoon/ride the bench. If there was more room on the roster, I'd agree that you don't have redundancy, you have depth and insurance. But there are only 25 spots. Not much wiggle room. Well, I guess you need to have all the information (what standing offers are for these players), otherwise it's impossible to evaluate. I trust that Hahn is smart enough to make the correct evaluations/decisions at this point.
-
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 06:46 PM) I like the answer and to some extent it's true -- they may be willing to deal with a 4-man OF rotation for a couple of months -- but it's not fully honest. The Sox absolutely need to trade some of their players, and sooner rather than later as those players slowly lose value. But they need it to appear as though they have absolutely no urgency or they'll never sniff their asking price. Hahn is trying his best to maintain a necessary illusion, though I'm sure nobody's fooled. If he can really sell this position, more power to him. I just don't buy that they're fine blocking their players or diminishing their assets. As far as "not trading for their replacements without being willing to give the current player away", that's hyperbolic, and much better than the alternative. You need to be able to accept some lost trade value on those guys but it doesn't necessitate dumping them. And it's much better than trading ADA or Gillaspie before landing Eaton or Davidson. What do you do if you fail? I don't agree. I think Hahn's answer is exactly correct. What does it matter if there are redundancies on a roster that is far from competing? If it provides value somehow (flexibility for the young players, including development at the AAA level instead of service time at the mlb level), those redundant players are providing value separate and apart from their mlb production, are they not?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 06:01 PM) Then why are you angry about having to dump De Aza? There is no rush to move anyone at less than optimal value at this point. Some of these kids may not be ready, and De Aza, if nothing else, gives us some flexibility. Why start someone's service clock if the team isn't competitive yet and you have better options on the roster?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 26, 2014 -> 11:32 AM) You'll enjoy it. I like the Blacklist, but it's almost entirely just because of James Spader.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 10:24 PM) How the hell could you pick that out? The bowtie? I bought one for my wedding...looked at a lot of them over the last 6 months -
So a colleague of mine at work was doing pull-ups on one of those bars you put in your door frame or whatever, and the thing came loose and he fell on his neck and permanently damaged his spinal cord, causing what appears to be paralysis from the waist down, with some basic movement in his upper body. Everybody who uses these things make certain it is really in there correctly and provides the appropriate stability necessary. I have never used one because I never felt safe using them, but I know several of you probably do, so please be careful.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 09:25 AM) Nope, I'm deducing from your own words and drawing conclusions. If I said "I like the color blue and no other colors" and someone said "so you don't like red," I couldn't counter that with "I DIDN'T SAY THAT, NOW DID I?" because I quite clearly implied that I did say that. Again, you said "Richard Sherman is acting like an idiot." Thus, at one point, you felt he was an idiot. An idiot is a stupid person. A stupid person lacks intelligence. Thus, at one point in time, you felt that Richard Sherman lacked intelligence. (turns to judge) Your Honor, I rest my case. How about we settle with the fact that it may be inferred from what Joe said that he believes Richard Sherman lacks intelligence?

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 05:15 AM) trying to save the $1,500 - $2,000. We're kind of using that money and putting it into a vehicle she's buying. Wow, I am shocked it costs that much...I thought when you said $2k you mean for a moving company to take her stuff...that is insane!

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 06:56 AM) You leave Giorgio out of this!

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 01:48 PM) That's the plan right now. The truck would be $2,000. I told her we're better off buying different stuff in Dallas. Anyone want to buy a 6 month old queen size bed, mattress, and box spring? Why don't you have her rent a Uhaul truck and drive it to Dallas, then have her buy a car there?

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 20, 2014 -> 11:25 PM) CC Sabathia looks like he lost like 50 pounds this offseason, wow. In a very nice Tom Ford tuxedo...very impressive, CC. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 07:46 AM) Oh I absolutely agree. But, if MLB was using the old posting system, the Yankees probably win the bid at like $60-70 million, and Tanaka signs for considerably less (though perhaps a similar overall amount). If the Yankees bid $65 million and win, does it surprise anyone if the Yankees sign him for 6/$90? or 7/105? nope.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 07:14 AM) With the Rangers also paying a $51.7 mill posting fee, so in all, the Rangers commitment was for $111.7 million. That was also with them negotiating alone while Tanaka had multiple suitors. You can tell which is better for the player. Yeah, but I also think Darvish paved the way for this contract for Tanaka. Teams were looking at Tanaka as the next Darvish, and if you don't believe that, you are kidding yourself.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 04:33 PM) Most of the argument is about his journalistic integrity. It isn't that people can't or wouldn't find out, but whether this article was exploitative or unnecessarily harmful. I enjoyed reading it, but it became much more about her transgender status than it needed to be to be a good article or lay out the facts. Your story seems to have changed over the last few days, Jake. Seems to me like you've jumped on the same bandwagon as many others after the first folks started to criticize the author.
-
Well, I'm just going to say it...I think the fact that she was transgender is absolutely relevant to the story. I think it helped hide her real identity, I think it emboldened her to make crazy s*** up, and I think if you want to use your past credentials/history/expertise to legitimize a product you are taking to market, you've got to be prepared for someone to discover that you are transgender. If you aren't prepared for that, you shouldn't make up crazy lies to sell a product. When you do so, you lose the right to "pick and choose" what lies an author might divulge and which he might leave out.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 02:48 PM) I don't think you have enough information to make that claim, actually. If she doesn't produce the documents, then there's no need to sign an NDA and no harm no foul, right? Unless, you know, they were going to f***ing murder him!!!!!!!!!! Well, considering she had brought lawsuits against pretty much anyone who stood up to her, had switched from someone who had volunteered information to someone who suddenly was attacking him for trying to verify what she volunteered, and had been acting erratically for some months now, meanwhile, almost nothing she had said about her past was checking out, yeah, I wouldn't have agreed to this nonsense either.
