2011-12 White Sox off season catch all thread
iamshack replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't really see anyone unseating them next year, but much stranger things have happened. Tebow knows that we've had the best team on paper plenty of years and have come up empty. -
Actually, I'll bet Crede comes out of retirement after they trade Hanley

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 12, 2011 -> 05:37 PM) And if he'd been tested twice already this year, that kinda makes sense, as he probably wouldn't expect to be hit with a surprise test during the postseason. I think testing is fairly regular though in the postseason...he shouldn't have been too surprised to be selected for testing then.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Dec 12, 2011 -> 06:25 PM) HOLY f***ING BACKLOADED CONTRACT Buerhle with #Marlins: $6M in 12, 11M in 13, 18M in 14 and 19M in 15. Deal also includes 4M signing bonus, deferred without interest. #MLB He's going to be untradeable anyways. I love Mark, but holy hell. This is what the agents of Mark and Jose did as a result of the team refusing to offer no trade clauses. The more backloaded those contracts are, the more difficult it will be to trade the player. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 12, 2011 -> 12:25 AM) It's been the same thing with Peppers since he was in Carolina. He utterly destroys whoever is blocking him so they hold him, and the refs don't call it... why? Why do they do this? Which is ridiculous. If you're an elite player, and a team has to break the rules to make you less effective, that should be called...that's part of what you have earned by being that damned good. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 12, 2011 -> 12:22 AM) It was damn close, but God must have told the review booth not to question it. He must have also told the referees to stop calling holding penalties during those drives. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 11, 2011 -> 11:18 PM) I guess I'm the only one that thought Denver's TD should have been reviewed for Tebow being past the line of scrimmage. No, my friend mentioned the same thing. I didn't think to look, but it must have definitely been close. Did you think his entire body was across the line? -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 11, 2011 -> 10:20 PM) It wasn't... it was like the fumble was his way of compensating for that not being called incomplete. And yet even with all his failures, I have to agree with Kyle that the ONLY way for these things to even occur is by the Bears playing not to lose as opposed to playing to win. We've done this quite a bit throughout Lovie's tenure and I absolutely despise it. -

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 11, 2011 -> 11:11 PM) The game was literally won at 2 different points. The first time, they had the ball inside the 2 minute warning and the Broncos had no timeouts. This is one of the most basic clock management moves here... you run the ball for 3 downs, taking as much time off the clock as possible, if you get a first down the game is over, if not, the other team gets the ball back with seconds left. Everything is basically a formality, because it's extremely unlikely the opposing team's offense can actually move the ball with that little time on the clock and no timeouts, even into field goal range. EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THIS which is why Barber's mistake was so bad. The second time, IIRC Barber had gotten a first down while carelessly holding the ball and letting it get stripped. He was well within Gould's field goal range even without the first down, just wrap it up with both hands while running between the tackles and fall down. Come on, he's got to know this... he practices against the Bears defense who is COACHED TO STRIP THE BALL. Yes, s*** happens, but he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt. It would've been a 40-something yarder for Gould assuming they didn't gain another yard, which he hits in his sleep especially at Mile High. Yes I know he scored the only TD and had 104 yards or whatever, but there's really not any other way of putting it, Barber lost the game. Twice. And I don't think that catch he made in overtime was even a catch, either. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 11, 2011 -> 06:17 PM) I can entirely accept this premise as possible...however, Santos's current value is less than what he was traded for. Other teams have chimed in publicly to make that clear. That's the mistake. You can't work your way around that. I think you're trying to turn this into a much more scientific process than it really is. These are a bunch of guys that talk all the time, know what eachother are trying to do, and know who they are willing to move or aren't willing to move. It's not like Kenny has no idea what Baltimore or Boston has to offer. Our FO has a list of the assets they want from every team and I am sure they are pretty sure they know who they can reasonably get and who they can't. I doubt much was to be gained by calling some of these other teams to ask "one more time" if they have changed their stance.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 11, 2011 -> 09:35 PM) That as well. And that they have no finisher other than Rose, who can't beat LeBron to the bucket.

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Dec 11, 2011 -> 07:29 PM) This. The kneeldown offense was the right call. Hanie can't play the position and has provided no evidence to the contrary. Our defense had put up a goose egg and was dominant all day long (despite never getting a holding call!). We should have won the game. Barber made two horrible mistakes. Prater rocked a 59 yarder to tie the game and a chip shot 51 yarder to win the game. Barber mistakes, Prater leg, a sprinkling of Tebow play making = we lose. But why the f*** are you instituting this game plan and not MAKING ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT YOUR RUNNING BACK KNOWS TO STAY IN BOUNDS? You put in motion a strategy early in the 4th quarter, you damn well better make sure every player you put on that field is well aware of it and knows what he must do and what not to do. Now I know Barber should know better himself, without anyone telling him, but if you're going to call 12 straight run plays then you need to explain to your running backs explicitly why this is being done and what to do and what not to do. As for the defense, wtf are you doing Lovie and Rod? You played brilliantly for the first 55 minutes of the game and then you go to the prevent you from winning defense. Especially on that game-tying drive, you gave the perimeter receivers 10 yards of cushion when the Broncos had no time outs. WTF ARE YOU DOING? You know this is Denver and you can make 70 yard field goals. Lovie being surprised that Prater drilled a 59 yarder at the end of regulation belies f***ing common sense, especially considering Gould drilled one from 57 yards and had 10 yards to spare. Referees....DID YOU NOT SEE PEPPERS GETTING RAPED on every play for the Broncos' last three drives? The TD drive he got absolutely mugged! I won $600 in a parlay because I had the Bears +3.5....so help me Tebow if those mfer's would have blown that bet for me... -

QUOTE (kapzk @ Dec 10, 2011 -> 10:57 PM) Huge news, one of the leagues top slugger, Ryan Braun tested posted for PEDs. Check the Diamond Club. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2011 -> 10:22 PM) Here's an NFL Mr. Irrelevant winning $5.4 million earleir this year suing a supplement company for a tainted product. That's more than he'd likely ever make in his NFL career. That company is called SWATS...Sports With Alternatives To Steroids.
-
QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 10, 2011 -> 10:12 PM) There is a safe guard for this. The only time a test is positive is when the T/E ratio is more than 4 to 1. You are not going to get that from a tainted supplement. The only way it is possible that he is innocent is that he was taking something that someone gave him on a reular basis but he didn't know what it was. I find that highly unlikely. They were able to find it during the test which means if it was a designer PED, it's one that is known. Interesting...so there is no way the T/E ratio could be as high as 4 to 1 unless he was taking it on a consistent basis?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2011 -> 08:20 PM) Most of those things aren't valid excuses...that's why MLB and the leagues put out lists of acceptable, league-approved substances that test clean, and why a smart athlete these days will keep samples of everything they take. But there needs to be a different process for these instances where there was an honest mistake made as opposed to someone who was consistently taking some kind of designer PED.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 10, 2011 -> 09:00 PM) I bet he fell on a needle, which is eerily similar to the way Hamilton fell face-first into a mound of cocaine. Let's wait and see...I'll bet it's something ridiculous.

The Sox didn't make an offer to Mark because they didn't wish to insult him...not because they didn't want him. It's a shame that it's come to this, but I think both the White Sox and the Cardinals (w/ Pujols) were lucky in that other teams bailed them out of having to overpay for the face of their franchise. While I think Mark will do well in Miami, I think this is the best for the White Sox as well. -
I believe Braun. I'll bet there is an explanation. There is no way this guy was using some kind of designer PED's. I'm sure it's some kind of stupid mistake.

Why on earth would Howard not want to play here? Has a reason actually been speculated upon?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 10, 2011 -> 12:45 AM) Other than Longoria, Price and Upton (the latter being a perpetual underachiever), their entire roster during the last 4 years has consisted of late or non first-round picks all together. And I mean guys that they've drafted. To get to the post-season three times in four years with their payroll in that division? That's incredible scouting, keen shrewdness and mastering the art of cornering the bargain-basement market. I still have no idea how they made the playoffs last season...I had the Jays winning more games than the Rays...they lost Crawford, Pena, their entire bullpen, and replaced everything in-house, basically. Crazy that they managed to come back and win that division, Red Sox collapse or no collapse.
