  1. Happy Birthday Sheldon, um, I mean Balta...
  2. QUOTE (soxfan3530 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 12:10 PM) Here's a thought just throwing out there. Is KW waiting for Damon to panic? I know he turned down more money than we can offer earlier but he literally has no market. If they truly have the money to get one more player as its been hinted at, signing Damon to a 5 mil deal would be a great pickup and still give ozzie his "flexibility at the dh spot" or if CQ begins to wear down he can play DH permanently. DA actually made a very good point yesterday in that Jones and Damon are both Boras clients. I don't know that Boras would want Damon signing here because of the possibility of taking PAs away from Jones.
  3. QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 10:22 AM) What I have been reading here about the P90X seems that it is a very very COMPLETE. It is true that it has these flexibility routines, Yoga routines, All different muscles in your body working out weekly - Is this all true? See, my issue in terms of working out is.. I just don't know. I don't have enough intelligence to get me to that next level. If the P90X offers me a day by day routine which incorporates Flexibility, Yoga, Working out, running, then it may be the best thing for me, for me to simply learn about all of it and see my own limits. So I guess my question becomes: Is the P90X all of this, and if so is it very easy to get started / understand? Thanks for the knowledge Yoda. I am in a similar mental/experience position as you are. I am not super thin like you are (I'm about 5'11 180), but I have always been fairly atheltic and in reasonable shape. Unfortunately, in my twenties, I've stopped getting exercise through sheer chance, such as playing hoops with the boys or walking the golf course, or playing rat hockey like I did when I was a teenager. I've also smoked on and off and drank here and there quite a bit. In the end, I have pretty solid genes, so I seem to be able to bounce back from bad habits or from inactivity, but I have never really worked out in a structured plan or routine. So the beauty of P90X is I just get the equipment I need, and do what the routines ask me to do. And from everything I've read, if you do those things, you're going to improve your fitness level, you're going to improve your muscle tone and definition, and pound for pound, you'll be much stronger than you were before. While you will burn calories during these workouts, you will also be using muscles that you've not used in this way before. You will build muscle mass and add bulk, as long as you eat enough so that the energy expended to do the exercises isn't replaced by your body actually consuming those same or other muscles. So you may want to be prepared to start eating like a horse, you may want to buy a supplement or meal replacements, but as long as you feed your body what it needs, YOU WILL add muscle and bulk. There is just no way to work out this hard and not do so. What Rock is telling you is that if you only want to add bulk, that there are easier ways. You can simply focus on the muscle-building exercises and start building and growing the muscles in your arms and chest and back and legs. My fear with that idea (and trust me, I am no fitness guru), is that without a laid-out program, you'll begin the exercises, realize those muscles are weak and struggle with the exercises, be embarrassed about your weakness, and give up. Either that, or you will not have goals to look to, no finish line to focus on, no idea when to start expecting results. These are the problems I have always had with working out. But with a program, a finish line, structure and guidance and a routine, you can begin to get an idea (although an extreme one, as they say) of what working out hard and living a healthy lifestyle really is all about. If I were you, I would try it. If you are in the midst of it and you start withering away and simply can't eat enough to keep up with things, then by all means, focus more on the lifting routines than the cardio routines. What I love, so far, about the program, is the complete package it is. It says follow this program as best you can, and if you do, if you do your best and stick with it, you will be a bad ass when you're finished. I can buy into that. There are no excuses and no exceptions. You do it, and you will be tough.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 09:19 AM) How much did you make it through? Yoga sucks, I usually do about 45 min before I get sick of it. Once you start thinking the resistance exercises are too easy then you should upgrade. My shoulders and arms last night was brutal, but thats because I am doing static arm curls with 20-25 lbs after blasting my arms for sets beforehand. I did about 35 minutes of yoga, would have done more, but I had to head into work for a staff meeting. I was actually enjoying it, but mostly because I have been very sore this week since starting the program, and stretching out my muscles was feeling really good. Definitely going to upgrade to the weights in a few months. Right now, I think the bands are plenty good enough. Today is Legs & Back. I'm a bit concerned, considering my legs are still trashed from Plyo three days ago!
  5. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 06:08 PM) I just don't buy that Jones is in the best shape in ten years, back in the 1990's he was one of the best cf's in baseball and he is clearly not at that level. Well, considering 10 years ago is 2000...
  6. QUOTE (ChWRoCk2 @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 08:48 AM) Hmm, for some reason I remember him having SS eligibility last year. I'm not too sure how Yahoo or ESPN determines players eligibility at a position for the next season, but I hope Gordon retains his SS eligibility otherwise I'm not really interested in him, unless of course he does play 2B then I would nab him and wait it out. SS is deep this year imo, I'd be happy with a number of the lower tier shortstops like Andrus, Alcides, Everth and Aybar. Seems like a great spot this year to add some steals to your roster. He had ss eligibility last year because that was his natural position coming out of college.
  7. Talk about a guy who is getting screwed by a bad economy. Poor Russell Branyan finally figures out how to hit lefties well-enough to get everyday at bats and even when he breaks out for a few career years, he can't even get a decent contract. As for Thome, he obviously is the perfect candidate, he'd probably sign here for next to nothing, but Ozzie wants Mark Kotsay and Andruw Jones and Omar all to like him. I sincerely believe that is what this is about.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 09:46 PM) What is a "cop-out" Alex? That is correct, Mike! Your turn at the board!
  9. Thanks for posting this, but in the future, please review the thread a bit before posting. The snippet in bold was already posted in page 3. Thanks.
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:33 PM) I wouldnt recommend P90X if you are looking to gain mass. P90X will lean you out considerably regardless of the weights you use, it is really for the athlete that is in good shape but wants to get entirely ripped. If you want to gain weight I would focus on protein/carb supplements outside of your normal diet and hitting the weights HARD but focused on particular muscles per day to get maximum results and to make sure you dont plateau. Rock, there is no way if he does that program that he won't gain mass. If he wants to only do half of the cardio routines, than so be it. But if he does this, he will be bulked up afterwards. There is no way to go through it and not be...

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 06:57 PM) Bands or freeweights? With the Bands I always felt like this was my off day. As soon as I upgraded to weights, this day became quite a bit harder. Bands. I don't own any dumbbells yet. Probably going to upgrade in a few months to those. Did part of the yoga today. Pretty cool stuff.
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 08:29 PM) I don't understand why now its what Ozzie wants Ozzie gets. Before near the deadline, it was what Konerko and Thome want, and they wanted nothing, so nothing it was. Ozzie was one of the last people to know the Sox picked up Rios. Considering he's owed more than any player on the team, that seems odd, especially now if they aren't bluffing about not adding anyone else. I think its a bluff, of course I thought DWise playing CF last year was a bluff as well. Unfortunately, JR said something the other day to the effect of "It's difficult to hold a guy accountable if he's not given the team he wants." It's clear EVERYONE else wants to sign a DH, and Ozzie is begging to be allowed to at least start the season out without one. It's pretty clear that he simply wants to make things easier on himself with the veteran bench by giving them more opportunities to play. Unfortunately, he's going to realize come about April 23rd that he's got no middle of the order LH bat and not enough run producers.
  13. Seriously DA, you have stepped all over yourself trying to hold up your argument. If the White Sox did things your way, they would stuck with a bunch of s***brick longterm contracts that would drive them into 4th and 5th place every few years. This argument will never be won by either side. I suggest you cancel your season tickets so we don't have to hear you cry at EVERY SINGLE MENTION OF MONEY.
  14. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:57 PM) And the mother can say, F' off Doc I'm having this baby with or without Tebow's ad. Do you really think that a mother does not understand that is an option? Do you really think that a Doctor would not discuss all options in this case? They can tell the Doctor to F' off, I'm not taking those drugs. You seem to be worried that she will have information that may suport a decision you disagree with. What made momma Tebow decide to accept the risks? Was it some ad on TV? This is a real life situation that people face. You may not find that decision difficult, you would just abort and move on at the slightest risk, for others it is not as clear cut. You would prefer someone makes this life or death decision after only receiving half of the information. Today, most people when faced with a difficult decision start researching, smart people research both sides. I'm not certain what I would recommend if it were my wife or daughter. I know I would support either decision. I would probably wish she would take the safe route. But I would definately want her to hear stories from both women who carried and women who aborted. I would want her to hear what went rigth and what went wrong. Sad that it seems it is easy to support the woman who aborts but if they are considering motherhood, even with risks, some people don't even want them to know it is an option. Not exactly support in my book. It takes more hubris than even Tex to tell someone what they should and should not be informed of in making a medical decision. Tex, obviously people aren't stupid and can see through the commercial. But why the need for it then? If not to try and influence people because he is a famous football player and all-around good guy, then why is he in the commercial? Do you really think one of the factors one counts in making this decision should be "because Tim Tebow's mother made this choice"? I just really think it is inappropriate. They wouldn't be spending the millions of dollars for the ad if not to try and capitalize on the Tebow's fame and to play on the guilt of people.
  15. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:42 PM) You ignore the countless commercials for finding a bank for a mortgage, goods/services to upgrading your home, taking prescription drugs, investment advice, etc etc, all things that shouldn't just be bought up in 10 seconds simply by seeing some hot broad show some cleavage, yet they're still advertising their product without such a negative response. Really? You can't just tune it out, like everyone tunes out every other commercial that's on tv? And I think there's a huge assumption here on what the message is. If they both scream at the tv "ABORTION IS MURDER, YOU"RE GOING TO BURN IN HELL IF YOU DO IT" then I'd agree with you. But that won't be the message. The message will be - i valued the life of my unborn son, despite the odds. That's an option you can choose too. Is it really that awful to say "hey baby's are important too?" And again, I don't think they're going to be telling people what to do, I think they're going to tell people that abortion is serious business and that you should consider the alternative. I suppose. But I think the message is a good one, so why not celebrate the fact that for 30 seconds out of a 6 hour broadcast someone actually states something meaingful versus shoving boobs/beer/chips in my face? I don't think that's the intent behind the commercial. Again, it's "hey, here's our story, we didn't immediately think about aborting our child, maybe you should think about that too." Well, I'm not going to argue this into the ground. We all have our opinions. That being said, this isn't a commercial that is similar to any of those you listed. This is a commercial that is attempting to imply that mothers who chose to abort their fetus to avoid significant health risks somehow "took the easy way out," or are baby murderers. It also implies that had these women took their pregnancy to term, they very well might have had the next collegian football star. Instead, they murdered him by taking the "safe" and "ungodly" way out. I'm not trying to pretend as if Americans can't use this opportunity to take a leak, or turn away from the tv. I understand Americans are smart enough to see through the message. I just think it's in poor taste. I think it's playing on people's guilt and it's inappropriate. I've said enough on the topic, I think you all know how I feel. No need to continue ranting and raving.
  16. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 03:40 PM) Not sure if its the same, but US Cellular gives out stuff at Cardinals games all the time. Ahh, well, probably is then.
  17. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 01:51 PM) You'd have to shell out more for Dotel, he's not going to accept the same amount to be a setup man as he would to be a closer. The opportunity to prove him self as a closer once again -- even if it is for the Pirates -- could improve his worth on next year's free agent market. Also: in order for Putz to reach his maximum incentives (an additional $3M) he'd have to close, there's only $250K in incentives for appearances. If he's closing long enough to earn the full $3M then he must be doing a damn good job in Bobby's wake. Ahh, fair enough. I dunno about your closing theory though. Odds are, he's going to be traded midseason to the Red Sox or something as their setup man. Seriously though, I wonder if presented with the offer last week, if he would have been able to choose the Pirates over the White Sox at the same $3 million.
  18. QUOTE (joeynach @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 01:51 PM) Brooks told me personally about a month ago that the sox were in negotiations with PNC to become the new banking sponser. Something the team missed pretty badly last year with the whole financial industry debacle. PNC is one of the healthy banks and had recently acquired National City in order to make a prescence in the Midwest, namely the Chicago market. I had brought up this fact to Brooks stating they might be a willing banking partner for the sox since they are looking to make a splash in Chicago and he replied stating they were already in negotiations. Cant comment on if a deal is going to result or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if its just a matter of time. Interesting. I am surprised they would be allowed to become a sponsor of another MLB team considering their ownership of the naming right's to Pittsburgh's facility.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 01:45 PM) I wouldnt think it would be in the best interests of his health to stay No, but I wasn't sure if he took the DC job at USC or is currently not employed. Hint, hint, our next DC...
  20. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 01:35 PM) And for about $4M less than some on here were willing to pay him 2 months ago. Anyone still have any doubts that he'd have accepted arbitration? The larger question is would you rather have Dotel for $3m or Putz for $3m (and probably more, because if he pitches like Dotel will the incentives will probably escalate his salary a bit)?
  21. Here is the link to the Chudzinski interview: ESPN Chicago
  22. This might have been in the thread already, but do you guys know if Monte Kiffin followed his son to USC?
  23. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 01:59 PM) f***, do you people see all the pharmaceutical ads that run? Where the hell is the outrage over all the drug pushing? In 30 seconds they list some symptoms so you can diagnose yourself, then tell you what drug to take. And no one here has ever mentioned it. But an add that no one has even seen, raises this much s***?! As for this example, what is the difference between pharmaceutical advertisements pushing their products, and what the Tebow's and this organization are doing here? I need a physician to PRESCRIBE these drugs to me. I need to go into a doctor, and regardless of how badly I may want to take Lipitor, if I don't need it, or if it will likely do me harm because of some other health problem or some other drugs I am currently taking, that physician will not prescribe it to me. However, if I am a mother, and I am pregnant, and there is a significant or larger than customary risk involved in me taking that pregnancy to term, guess what? I can say F' off Dr. Jones, I am taking this pregnancy to term and that is my natural inalienable right in this country. So regardless of whether you agree, regardless of whether you beg and plead with me not to take this pregnancy to term, I am doing just that, and there is nothing you can do about it.
  24. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 01:57 PM) Who are you to tell me what I should and should not listen to? Freedom of speech is too big of an issue for you to even have an opinion on, so why are you trying to push your views on me? This is far more important that what beer I drink. And in your example You also make damn certain that that widower does not meet anyone in that same situation who moved past that and successfully raised the kids. Knowing someone else went through the same thing would be terrible. Why should non beer drinker or alcoholic be subjected to beer ads when they are trying to have a fun afternoon watching a game? Sorry that someone suggesting that choosing LIFE would be so revolting and sickening to some of the people here. Tex, I am posting on a message board, where people post their opinions. This topic was placed in the filibuster subforum - it's intended place. If people want to get involved in these sort of issues, they can specifically seek out this forum, read the waiver, and then state their opinions in a respectful way. I am not stating these opinions in the Pub forum. I am not stating them in PHT. I'm stating them back here in the filibuster - the appropriate forum. And I certainly am not telling or asking anyone to choose life or choose abortion or choose medical risk over abortion or anything of the sort. I am arguing that the Tebow's ad is ill-conceived and ill-placed for consumption, and that they should deliver their message in some other forum. Say in pamphlets or videos, available in clinics and medical facilities. Even available on the web. Where people in that situation seek their organization out DELIBERATELY. Not in a Super Bowl ad. As for alcoholics having to deal with beer commercials during the Super Bowl, do you REALLY think that is analogous? Do you REALLY believe that an alcoholic having to see a beer commercial is that similar to 100 million or however many Americans watch the Super Bowl having to watch Tim Tebow preach to them about choosing life when you're a mother at medical risk? Are you seriously going to argue that? As for your silly Free Speech argument, do you see me arguing anywhere that the Tebow's and this organization should not be allowed to run their ad? Am I stating that CBS should prohibit them from running their ad? No. There is quite a distinction between arguing that the ad is ridiculous and misplaced and ill-conceived and purely STUPID, and that they should not lawfully be able to run it. And I am clearly arguing the former.
