My favorite show this summer is reruns of Scrubs... such an awesome show.

QUOTE (Seymizzle @ Jul 20, 2009 -> 08:43 AM) Bryan Morgado has not completed his junior year and he doesn't turn 21 until December so how is he draft eligible? He is 3 years removed from high school (redshirted as a freshman)

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 10:16 PM) They need to work on Pena's delivery. He doesn't seem to have very good balance at the top of his delivery, and if they can fix that, he might be able to get more pinpoint with his pitches. He also needs to learn how to throw a breaking ball. That little spinner he calls a slider has the left field bleachers written all over it.

People have mentioned getting Rolen, Rios, and Wells back in a trade, but what about Marco Scutaro? If we give up Alexei, they have to move Scutaro or Rolen, but getting Scutaro back instead of Rolen makes a lot more sense from a financial standpoint. He's only owed about 1 million after this season. However, he'd likely raise the cost more because he'll probably get at least type B comp in the offseason.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 06:52 PM) MLB's first 12 game winner? Jason Marquis. I would love it if he somehow won the NL cy young.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 06:29 PM) Did I miss a trade or something? All of his moves so far. JP Howell for Joey Gathright, Mike Jacobs as a starting 1B, etc., etc., etc. He has done nothing in the past 2 years or so to improve that ball club at all.

Dayton Moore is a failure of a GM.

Where is Cy Guthrie on that list?

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 05:19 PM) Brewers just got Felipe Lopez for Two prospects. Fantastic pickup by the Brew Crew. Good trade for the Brew Crew. Cole Gillespie is a decent spect, but Felipe Lopez will really give that Offense a spark at the top of the order. He's had a really good year this year and has been a good hitter for most of his career. Plus, he has a hot wife: http://www.nationalspride.com/columnists/i...7/02/img002.jpg

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 05:37 PM) They still need pitching, not of the Halladay variety, but a guy like Harang would be a decent pickup for them . Reds still probably think they are in it, so Harang is a no go. If we get Halladay, I wouldn't mind trading Contreras. He has pitched admirably since he came back from Charlotte, but I still don't trust him for the long run, and I'd rather get something from him now rather than nothing when he is a FA. And his value is still probably high even after a rough outing today.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 04:56 PM) Mitchell with his first BB in professional ball. Continues to show that discipline/eye at the plate. Of course... it's only a walk which some people hate. Got no problem with walks... but players with passive, Nick Swisher esque approaches at bat is a different story. Hopefully Mitchell doesn't fall into that group.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 04:57 PM) Disregard my post in the 7/19 games thread, I didn't notice the Greene promotion. I had actually noticed him and put him in my Top 30, but, I really hate that he was promoted over Remenowsky. Makes no sense to me. They are probably just waiting for that futuresox interview with him before they make any further moves -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 03:32 PM) Which .300+ in July hitting infielder are we going to bench for him? In my proposal, we have Ramirez going to Toronto for Halladay. So we wouldn't have to bench anyone.

I don't see why the Jays would have any interest in Viciedo. Well, I'm sure they'll have interest, but I'm pretty sure they'd prefer cheap prospects compared to Viciedo. I still don't see what's not to like about a package centered around Alexei and Poreda and a couple other prospects for Halladay. You'd be taking a risk by moving Beckham to SS and Fields/Nix to 3B, but it'd be worth it to add Halladay to the rotation. One thing I was thinking about if we do the trade I just mentioned, maybe we could get Willy Aybar from Tampa for Dotel. Aybar has no room on their roster now that Burrell is healthy and hitting again. The only thing you'd have to worry about with Aybar is if he's another Wilson Betemit who can't play 3B at all.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 01:32 PM) He doesn't get overhyped. He is a solid ballplayer. Average is the worst stat for hitting. It's based a lot on luck and varies from year to year. Regardless of the trade, it really bothers me that you think Swisher sucks because you don't like the things that he is actually good at. Also, right now Sweeney is an awful Major Leaguer. He'll probably get better, but he is just not good right now. Nothing from that trade has proven to be worth more than Swisher. Really, average is the worst stat for hitting and is based on luck? LOL. I'd say it's one of the better ones and now underrated. Actually, I'd say AVG, OBP, and SLG (SLG depending on what type of hitter) go hand in hand. A low average and decent OBP is no better than a high average and a similar OBP. And really, how much does it vary? Well, a better way to phrase that is, does it vary more or less or the same amount as OBP does? It's about the same as a player's average directly correlates with the the OBP. Besides a tendency to walk and decent power, what is there to like about Swisher? He plays a decent 1B and corner OF, fine. He's a switch hitter, cool. But his approach at bat is atrocious (he stands up there looking for a walk and not swinging until he's got two strikes on him), he K's a lot, doesn't provide a much run production (outside of 1 year, he usually only drives in around 70 runs), and had a s***ty attitude when he got benched for sucking. I'm sorry, but good riddance. I never understood the purpose of trading for him in the first place. I'll take the potential of Sweeney, Gio, and DLS and the money saved over the mediocrity of Swisher anyday.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 19, 2009 -> 10:54 AM) You know what they say about old wounds… I think I'll lay off on this one for a while, doesn't make the trade or the return any better. Also doesn't excuse some of the ridiculous slander some Sox fans insist on putting on Swish. That's the core argument, having lain that out let's move on. Dan Hudson has to be top 100, right now. There's no question in my mind, but where do we all think he falls into the mix? If he keeps what he is doing up, he definitely has a shot at top 50.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 11:52 PM) We've been over this. You don't evaluate players like most people. I disagree. What's that suppossed to mean? So, you are saying you'd rather have Swisher than Sweeney, Gio, and DLS? Obviously we haven't really missed Sweeney, Gio, or DLS... but I'd take Sweeney in CF over Wise anyday, Gio would be a potential option for us as the 5th starter, and DLS (while he is out recovering) still has a lot of potential and time to develop that potential. I said it from the time we made the trade for Swisher, it was a terrible move. Swisher is a mediocre ball player who gets overhyped because he walks a lot. No matter how you cut the cheese, a guy who hits around .240 and K's over 130 times a year isn't that good of a player unless he is putting up massive power numbers. Plus, not to mention Swisher had probably the worst approach to hitting last year of all our players combined, IMO.

Buster Posey has put up some awesome numbers in the minors. The future is bright in San Francisco. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 10:52 PM) Rick Morrissey, there is something wrong with your head Alexei and JOHN Danks for Halladay? Forget that noise Yeah, um, I think I'm gonna have to pass on that one.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 10:25 PM) At least we got rid of that soulless bastard Swisher! Right? Right? Right? Also, I really like what I'm seeing from Jared Mitchell. As I said many times before... The mistake wasn't trading Swisher, the mistake was trading FOR Swisher.

If Gameday is any indication, Quentin's home run was a bomb.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 09:36 PM) You don't have to be very good to be better than Derek Jeter. If you take a look at his UZR numbers and his Plus/Minus numbers from the past, it would scare you. Here's a glimpse into how bad he has been... In the past three seasons, Derek Jeter is a -68 at SS in terms of Plus/Minus. Nobody has been worse. The next closest is Hanley Ramirez at -40. Jeter has a career UZR of -39.3 and that's only been over 8 seasons since they started recording the stat. His UZR/150 is -5.7. That means he's going to give up at least 6 runs a year due to his defense. Of course, he does make up for it on offense. This has been the only year in which his UZR is actually above 0, but I don't know how much longer that will last. I understand he is lacking in regards of range compared to most of the other SS. But range is only one facet of defense. He hardly misplays a ball he can get to. Last year, according to "The Fielding Bible", Jeter only misplayed 17 balls he got to (not counting Errors), which was best among everyday SS's in the MLB. And if you added Errors, he's still the best of all MLB short stops. He'll have to move to 2B when he really slows down even more, but for the past 10 years or so, I'd say he's been perfectly fine there. Sure, he doesn't have great or range and his arm leaves something to be desired. But he makes all the routine plays, is usually the smartest player on the field, and is the leader of the infield. And like I already stated, he made up for whatever he lacked on D with his bat. He's not a horrible fielder or a butcher out there, but he isn't a GG.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 09:35 PM) Who's that guy who homered for Charlotte tonight? I assume you're talking about god.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 09:26 PM) I'm pretty sure Gordon's already better. Considering he's never played a single pitch at SS in his Major League career, that's a pretty big stretch.
-
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 18, 2009 -> 09:13 PM) On Baseball Tonight, they're trying to say that Derek Jeter isn't a bad defensive shortstop. I wouldn't say he is bad. He's certainly no GG'er out there and is over hyped by the media, but he makes most of the routine plays with a few great players here and there, is very smart out there, and acts like the leader of the INF the SS needs to be. Plus, his bat certainly makes up for what you lose in D. You can do a whole lot worse at SS than Derek Jeter. If Gordon Beckham can play SS as good as Jeter, I'd be f***ing ecstatic.
