  1. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 08:41 PM) So Torres would make the next scheduled start than or so I'd presume? I guess it depends on how Colon does. I'm guessing we'll probably see a bullpen arm come up for a bit, and we'll decide what to do when Danks' spot comes up again when we get there.
  2. The love fest with David Cook is quite amusing. He's a 28 year old non-prospect. Who cares. I don't know, maybe he wants to be in Birmingham or perhaps he's a good influence and teacher for the younger guys. However, getting all worked up about this is silly.
  3. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 08:29 PM) Anyone who tries to bunt their way on in the bottom of the 9th, down by 5, against a pitcher who has a perfect game or no-hitter, needs to be thrown into a shark tank. Bunting to leadoff the 9th inning would have been smart baseball. Also, considering they were down by only 5, they weren't out of it by any means. I would have had the first batter try and bunt for a hit. If that didn't work, at least hopefully you got the pitcher off the mound and have to field the ball, which can cause him to get a bit discombobulated. Also, the Rays needed baserunners, not home runs. But as I previously stated, bunting with any outs would have been just to get out of the PG. But still, no team should lay down and not try any way possible to break the PG. As a White Sox fan, I am f***ing ecstatic about the PG. But as a baseball fan, there is no way in hell I don't want to see a team give it's all and try everything they got to break up the no-no or PG.
  4. QUOTE (Stocking @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 08:14 PM) you don't bunt down by five. Unless you are classless. Would you if it wasn't a no no or perfect game, no. One run means nothing. Its was a professionally managed game by someone who understands baseball ethics. Exactly, you are down by 5. You need baserunners, not home runs. Any way you get on base, you do it. With any outs, it's a different story as a bunt is too risky. But to leadoff the inning, a bunt would make perfect sense. Also, the other team shouldn't want Buehrle to get the PG. They should do everything in their power to break it up. It's a losers mentality to say "hey, lets just swing away and see what happens, we don't want to break up the PG".
  5. Wallace is overhyped, IMO. He's a very good prospect, and I think he'll become a really solid hitter, but from the little I've seen of him, I don't see him becomming a perennial all-star and batting title contender like some people are hyping him up to be. Also, he's destined for 1B/DH. The only problem with such a trade is that Holliday is a FA after the year, and Wallace is a hefty price to pay for 3/8ths of a year of Holliday and 2 draft picks. If they can sign him to an extension though, I say do it. That lineup gets a whole lot better with Holliday in it. Only problem would be that it is right handed heavy. You'd probably like to see a left handed bat in there.
  6. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 11:46 AM) http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dunnad01.shtml Adam Dunn I know his defense isn't good, but he's a competent ballplayer, as is Lannan and Nick Johnson Okay, I get your response. I was just trying to point out how terrible the Nats are, and while the likes of Dunn and Johnson are decent-good, on any other team, there'd be a whole lot more good baseball players. Also, Lannan does nothing for me. He has stuff comparable to Jamie Moyer of now, and that .270 opponents BA leaves a lot to be desired. He'd be a 4 or 5 on most teams, but he's the Nats ACE!
  7. I'm surprised it took this long. He's not a good player, but he's gotten a bit of a raw deal. As far as Wise goes, that catch he made today will give him about another week or so in the clear, just because of the significance of it, but come August, no more free passes either (and I'm still pissed at him and Fields complaining about getting boo'ed).
  8. QUOTE (Stocking @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 06:08 PM) Joe maddon and the Rays displayed a lot of class today. With the speed the team has, they easily could have tried to knock Buehrle off his rhythm with a bunt in the later innings. True professionals. Are you kidding me? If anything, not bunting more was stupid by them because when you have a pitcher cruising like Buehrle, if you make him get off the mound and field, it could throw him off. This is baseball. You don't make it easy on anyone. I don't know what the reason was for not bunting, but you don't go out there trying to help the opposing team. I would have preferred to see them make it as tough as possible.
  9. If he keeps winning and gets that ERA down to about 2.8 or 2.9, he's got a very legit chance.
  10. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 05:48 PM) I talked to my best friend Mike last night. He wanted to come over and watch baseball. He's a Cub fan and I told him the Cubs had beat the Phillies. He was happy. I had to tell him no about coming over because my daughter , who just got her degree in Architectural Engineering, is staying with me now in my one bedroom apartment, so room is scarce. He enjoyed watching the Sox with me also. I made a bet with him early in the year $50 says the Cubs don't make it to the World Series. I felt like I was taking advantage of him and often joked recently that he wasn't remembering right and the bet was for $500 (which it originally was). At the end of the phone call he said "See you tommorrow at work." This morning my boss made an announcement that Mike had a massive coronary and died. Then I come home and see Mark had thrown a perfect game. I know logically one has nothing to do with the other but in my mind I can't help but think it's Mike's way of saying goodbye. R.I.P. Mike . You will be missed. Sorry for your loss.
  11. LOL, I gotta forget to tivo games more often. Today, I went to go workout at around noon, and realized I forgot to set the tivo to record the sox game. Thinking to myself as to whether or not I should call my brother to record the game, I decided not to as I figured it would be probably a boring game and I could catch the recap on MLB.tv. And then around 3 pm, the guy on the radio plays the soundclip of Hawk going crazy and says Buehrle just threw a perfect game, and I'm just thinking to myself "no f***ing way!" What a great job by Buehrle! Can't wait to see the replay on CSN!
  12. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 11:41 AM) Really? 40 HRs for 5 straight years (and on his way to the 6th), over 100 walks for 5 straight years, and a career OPS+ of 131 does nothing for you? Why because he strikesout a lot? Wait, what? Who we talking about here?
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:41 AM) I don't expect them to be moving that Strasbourg kid any time soon either. That's if they sign him... and right now, that's a big if.
  14. I think the easy answer is JD. I thought about Big Jim earlier, but his bat has clearly slowed down, and he struggles to catch up to most fastballs now. Plus, he's becoming even streakier, his strikeout seems to be increasing, can only play DH and has injury concerns, and is now officially the slowest player on the White Sox and perhaps in all of baseball. I actually doubt he'll be able to come close to 600 next year, that's how much his bat has slowed down. Sure, he still has hot streaks where he hits the daylights out of the ball, but those are becomming more and more infrequent. He also still walks a ton and gets on base at a great clip, but he can only score on a home run, or go from 1st to 3rd on a double. He can only score from second on a double. JD will produce more in the long run, and as much as I'll be sad to see Big Jim go, JD gives the team a better shot at competing and winning.
  15. It depends on the situation, IMO. Back in the olden-days, kids would get the s*** beaten out of them for whatever reason, or so I've heard. However, I don't see the point in doing it unless it's for a severe situation. Doing for any trivial reason will probably make the kid resent you in the future, but if you do it when they need to be put in line, I think it's a good way of discipline.
  16. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 09:11 AM) MLB Quick Pitch is reporting that while the Rays are in the mix for Halladay, and also for Cliff Lee, they supposedly are in discussions about something else they called major. If Halladay and Lee aren't considered major, I wonder what the hell they are talking about then.
  17. Nationals aren't trading Zimmerman. They just signed him to a cheap extension, and he's the only competent ball player they have on the team.
  18. QUOTE (almagest @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:09 AM) He actually says the realization that his priorities were not focused on his family helped him stop his brief usage of steroids. I don't see how this equates to "doing it for his family". Did you bother reading the article? Because he didn't get a big contract because of steroids, at all. He used them as a last chance to resurrect his career. As pointed out just now, he lied in 2007. How do we know he still isn't lying?
  19. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 03:26 AM) There is nothing they do that we can't. We just aren't there yet. That was what I was trying to convey. We are working our way up there, but they are ahead of the curve a bit.
  20. QUOTE (JoeCredeYes @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:04 AM) Salaries Salaries may not be complete and may not include some earned bonuses 1998 Chicago White Sox $170,000 1999 Chicago White Sox $230,000 2000 Chicago White Sox $475,000 2001 Chicago White Sox $550,000 2003 Tampa Bay Devil Rays $400,000 Career (may be incomplete) $1,825,000 After you take away taxes, he earned plenty of money by the time his arm fell off. Unless he squandered all of his money, he should have been able to have a nice nest egg where he could have easily gotten by for a while, while he looked for a new job to support his family with. I think Jim is full of crap.
  21. QUOTE (SEALgep @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 05:40 AM) When you're opinion is directly criticizing a person's intention, in this case, saying Ozzie is a scared little b**** and doesn't have the balls to do "the right thing", yes, I feel fine saying he's a dick head. If his opinion was that Ozzie doesn't know what the "right thing" is, fine, have your opinion on it. He's not criticizing his intelligence on the matter, he's saying he knows better and doesn't have the guts to do it. He assumes way too much, including what is "right." I think people on here who criticize Ozzie, which I respect their opinion on or at least their right to do so, at least will admit that Ozzie isn't fearful. Black Jack was a great pitcher, but you can tell he has some bitterness about something here with Ozzie. Conclusion - dick head I got the impression that he was saying Ozzie did know he should have let Richard finish it, but because it'd be going against the grain to not put the closer in, Ozzie went with the closer. I guess I can see where you think he's calling Ozzie a b****, but I don't think so.
  22. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 09:22 AM) I hope DeWayne Wise doesn't read Soxtalk
  23. Anyone know how much money Parque made in his baseball career? Cause I'm not buying that he needed to do it. I know he didn't make enough to retire already, but I'm sure he made enough money where he can get by for a probably at least a year while he looked for a new line of work. That is if he didn't waste his money.
  24. No doubt the fact he's got an automatic out every 3 innings has helped him, but Atlanta overall was a great situation for him. He probably feels a lot more comfortable because he is a lot closer to his wife and PR now. Also, the Braves have great coaching, and pitchers seem to always have success there.
