  1. And the reasons cited are partial b.s.. In reality, the teachers do not want to, and shouldn't have to, deal with the crying kid who was excluded. Why allow a situation in the classroom where some kids are going to have their feelings hurt and disrupts instructional time?
  2. Every photo is a doctored version of the events depicted. In a 360 degree view, the photographer pick a narrow slice to shoot. To further doctor the photo, by adding elements, should be labeled as such. This would place it at the same level as a courtroom painting. We know that is doctored and accept that.
  3. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 01:32 PM) Texsox, For the majority of our nations existence, people and the govt as well, did not believe that it had the power to control what an individual did with their own body. Regardless, the economic cost of enforcing marijuana laws is very high and the gain to society is very low. Most laws that try and enforce morals are a waste of tax payers money. And my response is pretty much the same. The government is involved because *we* allow it. Sometimes it makes sense and is correct, sometimes we are wrong. But we should never forget that we are the government. We can change it by electing people who share that vision. I happen to believe that marijuana laws are outdated and the time has come to make changes. I prefer to remove marijuana from the hands of dealers and into the hands of liquor stores and taverns. This coming from someone who has never smoked anything in my life except meat. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 01:33 PM) There's plenty of people addicted to legal "drugs" like alcohol and cigarettes yet there is no mass government crackdown on the "lack of productivity" caused by people having to take multiple smoke breaks during the day or those that show up to work hungover on Monday morning. If it is okay to put some known as dangerous materials into a person's body and have it be socially acceptable, why not other drugs -- especially if they are responsible with usage and can pull it off without hurting anybody else? After all, alcohol and cigarettes kill more people than crack, coke, heroin and pot combined each year. And in the idealist world the government does represent the people. However, the government represents their own power-hungry interests, the interests of those who can influence peddle with donations and the such instead of truth, logic and reason. Look at the criminalization of marijuana in 1937 for some real easy proof. Are you debating why the government is involved or that marijuana should be legal? Two vastly different debates. I agree marijuana laws are outdated and should be changed. At the minimum to reflect the current enforcement norms. I believe we are the government. We have done a poor job of oversight and electing representatives and the problems you outlined have crept into the system. But bottom line, we are allowing it.
  4. QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 01:30 PM) Sounds like your boss was in the Boy Scouts. Actually, I work for the Boy Scouts.
  5. participation trophies are stupid and the kids know it.
  6. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 01:17 PM) And then the levels decrease to lower levels than those nations who have criminalized it -- or so says the experminents of states who have decriminalized soft drugs and added in safeguards for those who use hard drugs (i.e. clean syringe exchanges etc.) And really, if a person is not harming another person, what business is it of the government or anybody else what a person is putting into their body? One function we have given to the government is our collective economy and the financial impact we have on each other. If you're behavior is costing me money, then the government should mediate. Another point, the government is actually you and me and everyone else. We elect representatives as our proxies. It is their business to do whatever we ask of them. If we decide they should be involved in what each citizen puts in their body, then they have the power invested in them by the people who elected them.
  7. One attribute that I wish I saw more of is the ability to disagree and not take it personal. Of the dozen or so posters here that I would actually walk across the street to meet, most are 180 degrees from me politically. The best examples I can give are Nuke and YASNY. We have pounded each other in politcal threads and never once has it ever been taken personally. I walked away licking my wounds, but believing that we respected each other's opinion. I never would believe that we would bait each other for sport or knowingly toss out an insult. I love a sense of humor, someone who can laugh at himself, someone who understands that we are all talking opinions. My employer has a list of twelve attributes they like all the members to live by, most probably apply to this place: trustworthy, loyal, helpful. friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. A little depth when appropriate and brevity when that is the right thing to do. Sometimes an "I agree" really does help the conversation. And when necessary.

  9. Since it is illegal for the kid to have a bb gun, it is reasonable to assume that the cops will treat all guns as potentially deadly. Sorry kid, don't be playing with guns. And as far as the witness who claimed the kid was trying to put it down, they have no way to know intent. I have to say this about the cop: 4 shots from 10 feet away and only hit 3 for 4 and the kid is still alive? From 10 feet?? wtf? Learn to shoot.
  10. Not naming names, but we keep hearing good posters have been run off the site, he's a good poster, he's a bad poster. I've lost track of what a good poster sounds like. So, tell me, what makes a good poster? Willing to debate his point of view? Willing to state his opinion and shut up? Let's not take shots at each other, although I think that would show bad posting, but talk about the attributes of a good poster. What standard should the Admins be thinking of when "cleaning up the site?"
  11. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 11:59 AM) Didn't Canada try that like a year ago, and wound up having people complaining that the government-approved stuff wasn't very good? But that's Canada, we're the country that invented McDonalds, Sliders, Cheetos, we make everything mo' better.
  12. QUOTE(Soxy @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 11:08 AM) I really need new friends. Don't we all. Making good friends is something that a person just can't set out to do. It happens best when you aren't looking. Having said that, I'll bet these are a couple people who would like to be a friend, who you don't "see" everyday. Like everyone, you probably walk right past them. How about a soxtalk be a friend day? Tomorrow let's all try and be a friend and see what happens.
  13. QUOTE(sayitaintso @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 09:31 AM) The US government won't legalize it because they aren't able to control the production of weed. I'm almost positive that if the government could control all of the production of weed that it would be legalized since they would make a huge profit off of it. Since they can't control who else grows it/sells it since it is not chemically created in lab related where only the drug companies know how to make it, i don't think that they will ever leaglize it. They can't control who grows tobacco or who brews beer, yet we collect crazy taxes on the stuff. Yes, some people home brew beer (Hi Jim) and some may produce their own cigarettes, but the majority would prefer USDA approved marijuana. Available at the local liquor store and bars. Convienent to purchase. Brand loyalty will kick in and then who wants to smoke that crappy home grown stuff when you can smoke "Buzzards" the same brand that NFL running back Ricky Williams smokes?
  14. QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 05:55 PM) That always goes over well in the U.S.
  15. All they can do is ask the Courts to once again decide on religion and the Constitution. I believe both are strong enough to face the challenge. I think we have gone overboard in chasing religion from our society. There is more understanding and acceptance for the free speech of hookers than preachers.

    QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 05:32 PM) Sadly, I believe we will see a nuclear weapon dropped/detonated as an act of war in our lifetime. Even more sad, it will in all likelyhood again be the United States doing the dropping/detonating. I believe it will be detonated, but not by the US. At worst, we may provide it to some third party in the Middle East, but I don't believe we will drop/detonate another one.
  17. I was thinking that, for this generation of Sox fans, we grew up with a s***ty UHF signal, and in the Cub's shadow. We probably started off with a chip on our shoulder.
  18. Two ideals are in conflict with me. 1. Discrimination is wrong. 2. Being forced to rent your property to anyone, seems wrong as well. For example, let's say a property owner decided as a concept to create a building that catered to Japanese businessmen who are sent to the US on two year assignments. (many maquilla employees are like this) He decorates the building in a manner that would be comfortable for Japanese with signs in that language, etc., and now wants to have mostly or all Japanese tenents. He believes this will result in a higher occupancy rate and greater profit margins. He believes that these businessmen will be more willing to rent his place and he can charge more if it is a "little" Japan. That doesn't seem wrong to me until someone is denied housing. Then I'd be outraged at the discrimination.
  19. Are Sox fans more likely to see the glass as half empty? Reading fan sites for teams behind us and seeing how some feel better about the Sox than Sox fans, has me wondering. Let's use this to talk about fans, not the team.

  24. QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 07:22 AM) How so? Against quality teams, can we really expect 3 good starts by our starters? Yes. It's playoff time.
