  1. Do they play Tiger Claw Rules? Oldie but goodie
  2. Let's play the on-line version, you go first
  3. QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 06:37 PM) I didn't think you still had it in you Not LMAO
  4. I wish I could put in another 8 hours at work
  5. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 01:09 PM) Eh, count me out then... Sounds to much like who can use Google the quickest and most effectively. How do you google your opinion? Backing your opinion with well researched facts would actually be a nice change around here. There won't be a right or wrong answer. The questions will be structured in a way that someone will have to state their opinion and back it up, isn't that what a debate is?
  6. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 12:52 PM) Nerds. I guess Steff is in
  7. Let me give an example of a possible round one question. Local, State, and National governments support the arts through grants, public art projects, and other expenditures. With rising government debt, is this a good use of tax dollars?
  8. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 12:43 PM) Curious here... Are we on our own, or are we resourcing for answers? Personally if it is looking up other peoples resources, I am not much interested in this. If it is something that is based on our own knowledge and opinions then I am in. It will be your opinion, but wouldn't any great debate involve some backing up of data, if that is making your point? I suspect that the judges will be looking at your sources, and if they are some fringe wacko web site, you may lose points, if they are respectful, you may gain points. Of they are "books you have at home", then you may not make round 2. Since there will be a possibility you may both agree, you will have to find someway, like a good candidate for office, to try and differentiate yourself. If I structure the question and give people sides, I think it takes away from the format. I did consider that.
  9. Here is my current plan. Round One. I will select a topic and each player will have 24 hours to reply with an opening statement. Then they will have a chance to ask each other two questions. Asked one at a time, and will have an opportunity to respond to each answer. All replies will be limited to 500 words. Icons, emoticons, etc, we count as one word. Pictures (this is the internet) will set you back 100 words. After the conclusion of the Q&A, each person will be allowed 24 hours to write a closing. I will add a poll to the debate and posters will have an opportunity to vote on the winner. I also have two people selected to vote. The three votes will determine who moves on to round two and who gets to flame me for weeks. The first topic will not be "hot", but the finals probably will. Plagerism, person attacks, etc. will result in a lose and possible suspensions. All normal and customary ST rules apply.
  10. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 11:50 AM) So, what you are saying that the Democratic Party (should I be using caps here?) is uncoordinated? I think the members are, same with the GOP. What is coordinated is the platform and some of the talking points. And Republicans can't dance
  11. Coordinated? With so many personal agendas out there, I really doubt any of this is coordinated beyond the usual party talking points coming out of the RNC and DNC. Just like the White House will send out the flackies to make the rounds of the talk shows, news shows, and columnists, I'm certain there are some points that people will agree on and mention.
  12. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 11:33 AM) If a political party was serious about doing something like this that would be great. But this just sounds like lip service to me. The laws have been getting tighter and tighter. What is silly in my book is if a staffer is going to be swayed by a $25 lunch, what would she do for a $300 iPod or a $200,000 rent free studio condo near downtown? We are making a much bigger deal about a working business lunch paid by a sales rep (lobbyist).
  13. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 11:28 AM) You definitely do not fall into the "hard liners" in my opinion. I think I do on certain topics. Keep the Minutemen and Military out of my backyard (literally). Don't cut taxes *and* increase spending. Capital Punishment. Scott Boras. Free Agents. Abortion. Politically motivated investigations. There is a God, and we all could be worshipping the same God through our individual cultures. Unfortunatly, they put me on opposite sides, at one time or another, with everyone. I also love SL&P and now Filibuster threads that are heated and the posts are flying at 25 an hour. I know in a day or two, everyone looks backs and usually laughs at the stupidity of theirs and the other posts, and life goes on.
  14. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 11:19 AM) I can be pulled to closer to the center if I'm not browbeaten into it. I think you hit the nail on the head. No one wants to admit they were wrong, but everyone will make a *new* decision, based on *new* information. It may be to change, it may be to reaffirm their previous position. On certain issues, I am very comfortable around my GOP friends, on others, the Dems think I'm one of them. In actuality, I do not trust either party to have total control. If I had to chose, I'd rather be labeled a Dem than a Rep. but would prefer to avoid either label. Independent doesn't fit, I love the two party system, with all it's flaws.
  15. QUOTE(Brian @ Jan 17, 2006 -> 12:16 PM) Which month is, "You flood 'Sex, Lies, and Politics' folder with threads on a regular basis"? I think that was month 4 for me :rolly
  16. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jan 17, 2006 -> 10:12 AM) Sorry You Have Wisely Chosen To Ignore This User. To Un-ignore, and to once again be subjected to his mindless ramblings, press 1 now.
  17. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 10:49 AM) For the most part, both sides here in Soxtalk seem to border on the extremities of their affiliation. In some cases, the "border" is completely out of sight. I don't know if it's a natural consequence of the debate in here. I do know this much ... every time I start being back toward the center, I get knocked back from it with a huge sandbag that hits me from the left. I know we have some swinging sandbags from the right at as well, but I don't if anyone on the other side gets close enough to get hit by them. I'm guessing if we were sitting around a bar and not typing, we'd be a whole lot more centralist than we appear here. I know I do. I counted the Republican County Chairperson as a friend, and we never fought over political posts like I have with some of the mindless idiots here
  18. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 10:31 AM) When my grandmother passed away she was lucid and aware what was happening. We didn't have much time, but I went to her and grabbed hand, kissed it, and told how much I love her and that I'd see her "in the twinking of eye". You usually don't get the chance to say goodbye to someone you care about. Don't miss this this opportuntity to let him what he means to you. My grandma was the same way. She had pancreatic cancer, and I was careful to schedule a trip before she went into the advance stages.
  19. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 10:34 AM) Tommorrow's headline: Senator Ried's Staff Resigns In Mass I jest. I jest. I thought he was from Nevada? Isn't Kerry and Kennedy from Mass? BTW, you jest, but that will be an issue for some of the staffers. Imagine going from free lunches a few days a week to now buying all your lunches, at inflated D.C. prices *and* on a staffer's salary. I know a few staffers and they all talk about how difficult making ends meet is and how the "free lunch" game stretches the food budget.
  20. LOL. I can't add up all the entertainment dollars I spent on company expense accounts in Vegas during console video gaming's high rolling 70s and early 80s. So this coming from Nevada, and basically covering the same situation.
  21. My favorite uncle was diagnosed with cancer, again. He has been having problems speaking on the phone from previous surgeries, so I've picked up pen and paper a few times to write him a letter and I keep coming up blank. Everything I write seems too morbid and good bye. I am at a loss for words. Suggestions?
  22. I have too many jobs
  23. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 09:57 AM) I'll second this entire post. I third it, and really dislike unfunny, rude, drunks sitting near me, especially when I have kids with.
  24. I am writing up a 1st draft of the rules. One guiding thought I have is taking opinion out of this a bit and replacing it with civil disagreement and showing good communication skills. I need to figure out how to limit the word count, how much time to give for each post, etc. I am also considering dropping the religion idea, although it may be in the catch all category and adding world events.
  25. As a viewer, I've had to turn off some games. As a participant, some loses were tougher than others. Which is one reason I basically stopped playing team sports. Knowing the guy two lockers over left some of his game on the field, and could have played harder, would piss me off so bad as I was dragging my ass after the game.
