QUOTE(Iwritecode @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 02:07 PM) The biggest problem is that some kids get so used to it that they start turning in homework assignments with these "misspellings". That is a problem. They also start to buy lite beer. I read an interesting article way back when regarding Sesame Street and how it negatively effected my generation because they couldn't stay focused for more than 40 seconds. TV hasn't always been helpful either.

QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 02:11 PM) Good grief.. Christopher Reeve could communicate. And while Terry makes noise and appears to look at people when they talk to her.. there is no evidence that she has any ability to communicate nor any proof that she can remember things for more than 5 minutes as that part of her brain is liquid. The point I clumsily was trying to make is a feeding tube may or may not be considered a life support device depending on circumstances and to be careful when writing a living will. Likewise, someone in a coma would also need a feeding tube. A narrowly defined living will may not reflect your wishes. I believe the totality of the person is needed to determine when a feeding tube is considered live support. I 100% would respect her wishes to not be kept alive in the state she is in, if she had clearly stated those wishes. Absent of any written statements by her, I do not see any harm in keeping her alive.

Now I see how you were looking at this. I can definatlly see your point. What I think makes this case unique is the lack of a written document that proves what she wants and the finality of death. I know some are trying to link it with the whole pro life issue. It is interesting that many anti-death penalty Dems are on the let her die side. It seems to me that she is getting a death sentance and we aren't even being as kind to her as we would a mass murderer. Dehydration (not starvation) is going to take her life and it will be a terrible death. I've read too many accounts of patients who Doctors said could not hear, in fact could. Patients who Doctors said couldn't feel pain, could. If she is in as bad a shape as the pro-death crowd believes, she isn't in any more pain or suffering by keeping the feeding tube in place. If she is functioning at the level her parents are desperate to believe, she is not only not being harmed by the feeding tube, but any rational human would agree keeping her alive is the right thing to do. The chart as I see it. Husband's view: Feeding tube: Waste of time No feeding tube: quickens death Parent's view: Feeding tube: sustains life No feeding tube: murder Where does she lose by being kept alive? Where does she gain by dying?

Full disclosure: I was a full fledge chess geek in grade school through college and much of that was traced to the Fisher v. Spasky World Chess Championships. I think I have played through those games a hundred times. I even (major geek) went to the 5th grade costume party as a chess player. (Oh how did I ever manage to reproduce). Having said that, Bobby Fisher is a complete, antisemitic, psycho and needs therapy, not a country.

Every generation has it's own phrases, I think it's really hip and groovy that the hip cats of today are what's happening. What makes this unique is we are raising the first generation of instant communication babies. This is the first generation who are growing up with IM, message boards, and relying so heavily on written communications. It only makes sense that a unique language would develop. Right On!

But that doesn't explain the more obnoxious pwn3d

QUOTE(flippedoutpunk @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 12:57 PM) From what i remember it comes from a programming error from some old computer game where when you play online and you kill somebody the automatic message said "(Players Name) was pwned by (Other Players Name)" I cant rememeber the video game though.. Warcraft was the game.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 12:51 PM) With all the hand wringing going on about BMac, I thought I'd make a couple of points. All we've heard out of Arizona is that BMac is ready. That has come from Ozzie, from scouts, from opposing managers, from the hitters. Also, they aren't going to be jacking BMac around like they did with the 5th starters last year. He won't be pitching on 2 days rest, oe on 10 days rest. They'll put him in the rotation and let him take his turn. I'm excited Brandon's getting the opportunity and I believe he'll succeed. Excellent points. One constant is he's going to be under some extra pressure because he is replacing Buehrle. When was the last time we brought up a starter who wasn't immediately under fire?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 12:41 PM) It must be Jon Garland Fever I had the same thing happen to me today. Just substitute any heavy lifting with logged onto Soxtalk and found out Buerhle broke his foot. The throwing up, and everything else is right on.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 11:39 AM) You're suggesting there is some inconsistency here? Get the f*** out! Wouldn't that be consistent? Aren't they taking the decision away from her husband?

QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 08:39 AM) Without it, does she die... ? That's how I define LS. And I don't see how anyone could disagree. However, someone who is a paraplegic, also needs assistance to eat and drink. Did you consider Christopher Reeves to be "on life support"? He could not feed himself.

When Mark comes back, it will be interesting is KW keeps singing "don't worry about salary, play the best guy" song he told Ozzie will Harris. It probably isn't worth speculating now, wait until Mark is ready and see who is shining and who is struggling, then let the debate begin.

QUOTE(TheDybber @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 10:54 AM) Bruce Pearl is on the same level as Linda Tripp. Why wasn't he, or the Iowa team, put on probation for illegally wiretapping a recruit? Isn't that entrapment? Sorry Dick, but Bruce Pearl, good coach or not, is not a martyr, not a do gooder, he is a rat, plain and simple. In most states it is legal to tape record conversations you are in. That is very different than wiretapping, which is listening in and/or recording conversations you are not a party to. One link If it is an interstate call, the federal law would cover it. Wow, I get to dust off some of my old journalism training. \

E-Lo is #4 on the Nationals starting depth chart. Who would have guessed a guy who finished second in the Cy Young voting a couple years ago would be at the ass end of the National's bench? Jon Rauch is listed as coming out of the pen. Red's a good color for him.

QUOTE(Y2HH @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 10:47 AM) I'll pass on Cotts until he develops more reliable pitches than a short-armed fastball. Cotts is not the answer, it takes hitters less than one at bat to figure out he will throw that fastball in a pinch, and they will knock it over the centerfield concourse when it happens. This lands on Bmac, and if not Bmac, Hermanson. -y2 AAA would be the place to develop more reliable pitches.

QUOTE(JimH @ Mar 21, 2005 -> 10:42 AM) Since it looks like Buehrle will definitely miss all of April, I'm happy they didn't trot out the lame "we'll just go with a 4 man rotation" line. They should still pick somebody up (a starter) who's willing to pitch at AAA, you can never have enough depth and freak injuries prove it. In about 10 days, there will be some guys available. If any of Garcia-Contreras-Garland-Hernandez-BMac have problems they'll need a guy. Sox are deep in bullpen fill ins but not starters. Another route is stretching Cotts out. We still have a couple starters that have shown AAA flash in the system.

I would like to nominate this for the worst thread of the year. Just a thought on rotation. Why not pitch B-Mac in the first series? Give him the #3 spot. He's the hottest arm we have. I hope this Oh s*** moment doesn't cause him to start thinking and tinkering. He needs to keep is 20 year old head on straight. I'm drinking the koolaid and think Dontrell time He needs to practice this phrase I never wanted to make the team this way. I hope Mark returns quickly and completely. Until then I just want to help the team and pitch well when they hand me the ball.
