    Juggernaut, be careful in generalizing all Catholics. Any group of that size has individuals of all stripes. I've heard from Pro-Choice Nuns and Pro Death Penalty Priests. And that's just the professional side. The flock is even more diverse. My Catholic Church is very progressive, the Church staff is unionized, as part of an organization called Valley Interfaith we have aggressively pursued political gains and influence. We have been fighting for better representation in our city's government, and pushed for livable wage standards, above minimum wage. Many of these are at odds with mainstream Catholicism either by tradition or Tradition. We rejected several Priests that the Bishop assigned us and fought against the Bishop's control of personnel matters.
  2. Sun-Times Link Williamson had to pay for his flight home WTF?? We can rebuild their whole damn country but a soldier has to buy his own plane ticket? I am so glad my elected officials are on my speed dial. Stuff like this pisses me off to no end.
  3. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Mar 25, 2005 -> 08:57 PM) That makes NO sense to me at all. Why in the hell would they have to pay income taxes on an asset before they sell it and realize the income? You don't pay taxes on a stock that skyrockets, until you sell it and actually realize the profit. Rex, Switch it around and see how this could be abused. What if an employer offered a housing makeover and paid $1800 per month for someone's mortgage? That would be a great way to shield income from taxes, and our government doesn't like people to shield income from taxes. Car allowances, company provided cars, are taxable as income. I was relocated and until I could find a house and get my stuff down here and moved in the company provided housing. I paid taxes on that, there was a corresponding write off that may have balanced, but I don't remember. Using the stock analogy, you paid for the stock with taxable income. If the company paid you in stock, and then you turned around and sold it, would you be taxed on the amount at the time it was given to you, the sale amount, or the gain? This seems to fall into the gift arena. There are limits as to the amount you can receive as a gift from friends, family, and even strangers.
  4. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 27, 2005 -> 07:16 AM) I'm scared. I've seen second place, it's not that scary, just maddening.

  6. Doctor "would you like to hear the heartbeat?" Mom & Dad "of course" Doctor "sometimes it's a little faint, let me move the stethoscope slightly so you can hear. M & D "it sounds a little strange" Doc "Let me listen, hmmmmm, that is strange, I can hear two sounds" M & D "Could it be two babies?" Doc "It could be but, it really sounds like he's typing . . ."

    QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 25, 2005 -> 12:48 PM) If Terri was a dog, they'd give her an injection. If you starved a dog to death, you'd be arrected and prosecuted for cruelty to animals. They shoot horses, don't they? Humane. What the hell is humane? What is our criteria for being humane? Is Dr. Korvokian a criminal or an angel of mercy? I don't pretend to know the answers as to what is right and what is wrong in a situation like this. This is the definition of a "grey area". There is no pretense of black and white in this case. I also don't know what else to say. I have prayed, that if it's God's will, that she has a full recovery so that she can speak for herself. So that Terri can tell us what it was like to lay there and know, if she knew, that her life was the focus of the nation. So she could tell if Michael had her best interests at heart, or his own. I don't know and I cannot understand anyone who proclaims to know. YASNY, if Terri had murdered 26 people, they would have given her an injection. This is the worse of all possible outcomes, no matter what you think should be her fate.

    A personal hero of mine was Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. Much was written how he faced his impending death Some consider pulling the feeding tube as assisted suicide. Others will not. To each their faith. Peace

    I think anyone reading the thread knew exactly what Jugernaut meant and it was an obvious typographical error. Of course he wouldn't support bulimia. What's that phrase about a goose and a gander . . .?

    PA, I was wondering when you would weigh in. Good to hear from you. Peace. I know we had a challenge, but personally, I am finding no humor here today.

    QUOTE(Texsox @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 10:09 AM) I hope that means something other than you are LYAO at her dying QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 10:11 AM) No Tex.... it means exactly that. :headshake Here is my comment and her response. Notice no green. She repeated basically the same comment in a PM. Black and white in easy to understand words. "It means exactly that."

    QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 10:43 AM) You think that was bad.. you should see the PM I got... In response to the PM I got from her stating her comments were exactly as I was taking them. My first PM stated she should look at the last post because I didn't think it looked like what she meant. I was thinking I was missing something. I was shocked when she responded that her response was it was exactly what she meant. I have read some very disturbing things here, but this takes the cake. :headshake I am just sick.

    I've been reflecting on Steff's excellent comments about other problems we have. We all know this ends with her death, sooner or later. The lasting legacy is the attention this has shown on living wills and the benefits of a good lawyer. Humans have a connection that is unequaled elsewhere in the animal kingdom. A stranger whose passing would not mention a passing word outside of her immediate family has captured out attention for months and years. Everyone with strong emotions on this feels an emotional response. Either let the poor woman die in peace, or let the poor woman eat and drink. Human nature in all of us. It would be wonderful if we could place the same sense of urgency on other matters. I'd like to see more of an urgency to eliminate fossil fuels. I feel good about humans and America during all this. I don't wish to repost from another thead, but imagine how strong we have proven to be when we have not given our elected leaders the ultimate power in this situation. In other countries, the President via royal decree, threats, intimidation, or a wave of his hand could have power over this and save her life. Our constitution places the ultimate power with an ordinary citizen.

    QUOTE(TheDybber @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 09:55 AM) Ahhhh... Work: 512 Home: 512 Cell: 512 That means I only have to remember 7-digits and let the other 4-digit part of my brain waste away to sweet liquor. PS. Texsox, is that Charlie Chan and number 1 son? I never understood why they had a white Charlie Chan and an Asian son? Or David Carradine in Kung Fu? Yes it is. I was in a Saturday morning movie kind of mood when I stumbled across it.

    QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 09:49 AM) I hope he did. You don't think her opinions would be clouded by the sound of wedding bells? Would you like your ex-husbands new girlfriend helping to decide your fate? Eikes. This is a strictly theoretical question, I have no way of knowing anything about this particular woman and do not wish anyone to believe I am generalizing that all people in this position, or any one specific person, would have their judgement clouded.

    QUOTE(Steff @ Mar 24, 2005 -> 09:39 AM) I misread your response. I said no such thing. I said they agreed with her husband. Big difference. Yes there is. I must be attributing someone else's response to you. Sorry. Too much info here. Not directed at you Steff, Do you think he laid in bed and discussed if Terri should live or die with his current girlfriend and mother of his children? Creepy thinking that my wife would be sharing an intimate moment with someone else and discussing if I should live or die.
