  1. There was almost no way for anyone to win in all this. Timing was everything. If he was under contract for 2005, this would be a whole different discussion. I assume all this is covered by either the CBA or the player's individual contract. It is a foreseeable situation, that has happened before. I do not believe either party is ethically bound to do more than what was agreed to. The contract seems to offer an unfair advantage to the player. But then again, everything in baseball seems to be tilted towards the players.
  2. The terms of the contract should have been enforced. I assume they were. Sign the contract and live with the terms. damn where is ncorgbl with his insider owner info?
  3. I think the team should have stayed away from all health matters as soon as he was out for the remainder of his contract. Make the player responsible for his own health. That way, if it doesn't work out, he has only himself to blame.
  4. Well as Bill Clinton would say, "we have to define what team doctor is"

    Honestly

As in all matters of public policy there are unintended consequences. Health Insurance is a tricky issue. Companies would like to avoid a situation where you could pick anyone and add them to your coverage. A single payer system would make all this so much easier. If we have a patchwork of states where same sex marriages are legal and some where it is not, companies will have to administer a patchwork of benefits packages. We could also face situations where a spouse has coverage, the employee is relocated, and does not.
  6. I had that happen at Hastings and they gave me one. They said it happens sometimes. I wondered if it was my son walking in if they would have been so quick to do that. The manager said some shoplifters are able to slide out the cd.
  7. I stand corrected, there have been complaints about owner loyalty. I am not privy to insider information so I do not know who is lying. It seems to me that a WS Doctor would be the contact point for a player, not Kenny or someone else. So when Boras says the WS provided the surgeons name, I accept that. I wouldn't expect the travelling secretary to say "here's the guy to call". I am just happy Maggs didn't accept that last contract.
  8. Which is what Maggs stated he wants in an agent. I place the blame on Maggs.
  9. Has a team ever looked good when a superstar player leaves via free agency? Has a player ever not looked like a greedy sob to the hometown fans when he leaves via free agency? The only team that usually winds up with a positive PR is the team that signs the guy. And that is usually just temporary. Boras to Cubs, You know we absolutly made up the whole Maddux to the Yankees thing to get more money from you, here's your chance to get even with the other teams. We're floating the Maggs to Cubs rumour to get an offer from someone."
  10. Exactly. From both sides. The owners want the players to be loyal and work for less, the players want the owners to be loyal and show "respect" (Player to English dictionary lists respect = money) and of course everyone wants the fans to be loyal. Alomar and Kelly are gone. No one complains about owner loyalty. If the team wanted either one to stay we would be hearing some crap about the players being loyal and staying.
  11. Makes it hard to sign free agents. At least we've been able to keep Frank Thomas smiling every year and happy as hell with the organization and his contracts. I am certain no one here would get their feelings hurt if they knew their boss was trying to get rid of them. Imagine not knowing where you would be living that season? Which schools your kids would be going to? Should you sign a new lease, buy that home? I know they are well compensated, but with all that money comes some real s***ty stuff. I remember how stressful my relocation was, and I had options. Basically being told by your boss that they thnk they can do better wthout you and you may have to move and work for a different company, must really suck. I am just thankful he didn't accept that last Sox offer. We already have a great DH, and if he's slowed or worse, it would have been a mess.
  12. I'm with you there. Plus, seriously who are you going to believe, Best Buy or a guy who sold the monitor to a friend, taped a brick to a board, and tried to scam Best Buy?
  13. Devil Rays never won a world series Marlins 2 WS wins both since the Sox last. Pirates 5 WS wins, 4 after the Sox, none since 1979 Brewers None under Brewers name Tigers 4 WS all after the Sox Expos No world series wins Diamondbacks 2001 WS Champs Yankees 26 WS wins, all after the Sox Angels 2002 WS win Southsider is correct. Until baseball gets serious about fixing the sport, the haves will be perennial playoff teams and the half nots will dream. To be competitive, Chicago needs one team to leave and the city to support the others. I don't see either team leaving.

    Heart question..

Steff, Find a cardiologist you trust. Follow his advice. Diet and exercise will be priority one. The heart is not something that should be taken lightly. Take this as a warning sign and keep it from getting worse.

  16. Two in a row for White. And a National Championship Title.
  17. One of my favorites. Always seemed to give 100%, nice to everyone, I don't know what got him in KW's dog house, but it seems he really did. Being a nice guy doesn't get you far in baseball.
  18. greedy bastard wants to keep playing
  19. The miracle of modern pharmaceuticals. I hate to see on honest man's accomplishments be replaced by someone who, while possibly not directly breaking the current rules, broke the law in his quest for power and fame. You cannot separate size and ability. Artificially substituting size is as wrong as artificially sacrificing ability. If somehow any big guy could be given artificial help in putting the bat on the ball, would that be fair?
  20. The sad thing is that the football team makes a huge profit for the University. Not just in TV and attendance but in donations, and other contributions. When your team is top ranked more money flows in from happy Alumni. . There is no way to get the cat back in the bag.
  21. I just heard the interview. They are looking for him to catch 50-60 games. If there #1 goes down, they will not be counting on Sandy for 120 games. I'll miss him. I always thought he gave 100%, was good to the organization, always fair, nice to fans. I cannot think of anything he failed to do as a good employee. I guess just being good to someone isn't enough to win loyalty in baseball. I guess I wil have to change my profile, Sandy was listed as my favorite Sox player.
  22. I guess he thought homosexuals do not read.
  23. . . . Other researchers discovered that 3 out of 4 guys lie when asked about their Internet use. . .
  24. Not everyone would be happy. We never can have everyone happy $11 million is too much to pay one player is some people's minds. Based on a $70 Mil Payroll. It seems to me that the players union has the upper hand in this. I cannot believe a player's ability to refuse is because he felt like it. I assume that was what was negotiated. I also find it hard that the owners allowed such a (from how this looks) messed up system. I would also assume the team could have placed a clause involving health into their offer. If that isn't the case, then this is even more messed up.
  25. I tell kids who have worked for me "If you cannot be successful as a waiter, how the hell do you think you'll be successful as a lawyer?" Is being a lawyer easier? Some get it, some don't. Do your best at everything. Develop great habits, and success comes in whatever you are doing.
