  1. There are cultural and societal differences. At the other end of the spectrum are older Americans moving in with their kids. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/more-agin...kids-2014-11-18 http://www.aarp.org/money/budgeting-saving...-with-kids.html
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 26, 2016 -> 09:16 AM) It's an interesting conflict and I know my wife's talked about it. How much of schooling is about teaching behaviors versus teaching the material? A "absolutely no late work" or "heavily penalized late work" policy will discourage a student from finishing work they're late on--they might learn a lesson about doing it on time (or maybe they won't!), but they won't learn the course material. And of course that now ties back into many teachers' evaluations being based on testing and student growth, stuff that just measures how much material they're learning and not timeliness, classroom behavior, etc. Or as I like to think, if the highest grade that can be earned is a 70, why should a student do more than 70 work? I will give full credit, but I expect a better product if you take extra time. So what may be a 100 when turned in on time, may only be a 90 if you take an extra week. But if you greatly exceed what was a 100 on time, you could still earn a 100 turning it in a week late.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2016 -> 08:58 AM) You don't think teaching timeliness of work is important at that age? It is. But is it an academic or a behavior problem? Teaching kids to stay on task and not bother classmates is important. Should we deduct points on an assignment if they talk during it? Basically if you look at the required material that needs to be taught and the learning outcomes, timeliness does not appear anywhere. I am conflicted as anyone, but by focusing on what a child learns, and not how or when, I believe I am a more productive teacher. And aren't there some things that parents can teach as well? There is a lot more they can do than a teacher taking off some points on an assignment.
  4. Caulfield For the record I wasn't directly responding to your post. Sorry if it seems like I was. I was speaking more to the general mood in multiple threads.
  5. Is it better to have won and lost than never to have won at all? It feels like many on the board wish we had been .500 from the start.
  6. There are two different issues here, Robin and Ozzie. Robin's demeanor reminds me of Tony L during his tenure as manager. I think he will be appreciated more years after his career. Today it is very frustrating. Ozzie? Seriously why even bring up his name? He will never work in baseball again. Nostalgia is dangerous.
  7. I really wish I could build up some interest for the draft but baseball is the worst for prospects making it. Every other sport draft picks, especially high first rounds picks, show up that season. Baseball, it takes forever and they have to climb up four levels.

QUOTE (shipps @ May 25, 2016 -> 02:41 PM) Seriously? I am having a hard time not making a smart ass comment about someone running A HALF OF A MARATHON and boasting about it with a bumper sticker. Think of it as more than twice a 10k meter.

Hey, my daughter is putting a 50 and a 24 hour on her Jeep to mark the 50 mile and 24 hour races she has run. But actually, what bumper stick isn't lame? Your favorite sports team? College? Vacation spot? CB Handle?
  10. And I'm not saying that wins is some major factor and has huge significance. I think it is one piece of information that should be fit in when evaluating a pitcher. Comparing his win total to other pitchers on his staff with their stats may reveal subjective information. How much you want to value motivation, desire, etc is up to you. But totally dismissing wins dismisses how well a player can get his team playing behind and for him. Unlike most other sports, baseball is the only sport where wins are tracked so publicly for an individual player. Football comes kind of close, but nothing like baseball. Again, it isn't a huge factor, but I believe it shouldn't be overlooked or automatically dismissed.
  11. How would you explain a pitcher with more wins than another pitcher on the same team with worst stats? Do you factor in team chemistry or motivation in judging a team?
  12. Exactly. WGN was beaming across the country via cable while the Sox where on pay TV. All the shut-ins could watch day games. It was all that was on TV

QUOTE (JPN366 @ May 25, 2016 -> 11:35 AM) This. I also don't understand why so many people have the Yeti stickers on their cars. But I am in the deep south, so they usually have Duck Commander and Trump stickers too. I can't explain why after spending $400 you would also want to advertise. I see the coolers chained to trucks.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 25, 2016 -> 08:21 AM) If you've got a gas grill already and want to give smoking a try without investing in a whole separate appliance, you can easily set up 2-zone heating and use your grill as a smoker. I've done this a few times. One issue that I didn't really think about until later, my side fire box unit cooks from the top as hot air flows from the firebox across the grill and out the stack. My gas grill had more heat low. I usually cook my brisket meat side up to start. With the grill meat side down seems to be better.
  15. Almost 20 years living in deep south Texas near South Padre Island, 100 x 100 was every year.
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 25, 2016 -> 11:08 AM) Not everyone had such a rosy view of Reagan and his right-wing conservatism. During his presidency it wasn't as pronounced as years later. I remember thinking we would be tossing nuclear weapons around. I could not image anyone actually voting for him. (I didn't).
  17. It doesn't have to be a Republican, it could be a Dem.
  18. I'm getting ready for my favorite lesson. I have my seniors write down (in code if they prefer) every terrible thing that has happened to them. All the things they have been told they can not do. All the lies. All that kind of stuff. Then we pass the trash can and they rip it up. Throw it away. We're leaving that in high school. Then I pass out a poem, this year Nothing Gold Can Stay. I have them section the back of the page into fourths. Using just one fourth of the page I have them write all the positive things. All of their very best attributes. Everything they know to be true. Then we discuss how this is the stuff that matters. Diplomas, degrees, awards, are all like shields, we can wave them around and they may help. But who they are and who they will become is armor. And since they are all 18 and about to be high school graduates at the end of class I say "good by class" and they say "Goodbye Jim". In the south, calling an adult by their first name is a big deal. I do it to show that they are adults and have a different place in the world. Like every year, I'm going to miss most of these people.
  19. They support the Spurs, but they have to be the easiest pro team to support. Class and wins. The Missions draw well. We just got a pro soccer team . . .
  20. In a state where high schools build $70 million dollar stadiums, I find it interesting a pro team can get by only spending a billion.
  21. But what Reagan was a master at was the role of cheerleader in chief which we badly needed at the time. After the Nixon - Ford - Carter years we needed someone to ride in on the white horse (literally) with a swagger and smile, and make America feel good about themselves. We went from holding our head down to a brash confidence. In my lifetime, (just a little too young to remember Kennedy) he was the gold standard. Clinton came close. After the old guy club, 12 years of grandfathers running the country, he comes into office to Fleetwood Mac and blowing his saxophone. Hell, that young vigor is partly why we've given him such a pass in regards to Monica and others. Again, a huge shift in attitude. I don't see a positive attitude change after this election. Probably after the next one.
  22. I believe the greatest problem we still have from the Reagan years was he united the Dems and his party in high deficits. No longer do we have tax and spend Dems and don't tax and don't spend Reps. Now we have cut taxes and spend, spend, spend.

    Sweat gift.
  24. It seemed like more of a comment on how the Cubs get all the press and the Sox are shuffled to second team status. Which is true for most of the country. Here in Texas, despite having AL teams, people think of the Cubs when they think Chicago baseball. Same in more areas of the country.
  25. QUOTE (3GamesToLove @ May 25, 2016 -> 08:08 AM) This is silly. Nobody is saying that wins aren't important. They're obviously the point of the game. Pitcher wins, on the other hand, are not the same thing as wins, and are not terribly important. The rule is convoluted and arbitrary. Which tosses all the intangibles out the window. There is no such thing as momentum, confidence, etc. We play the games with humans, not computer models. Humans bring emotion and character to whatever they do. Do the players get up just a little more knowing who is on the mound? Do they feel like they owe it to some pitchers? While I agree wins are not THE best measure of a pitcher, but spend some time coaching and you see how much emotion can change things.
