  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:11 PM) Social Security type results...aka 0 risk of loss in the event of a downturn? No, no one could do that. So the government must guarantee a return greater than the market can achieve. The government can't invest your money to reach that goal, all they can do is toss greater and greater expense at it. And some people actually have a problem with that system?
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:07 PM) OK, we will forget the pair of first inning 3 run homers Konerko hit in the ALCS, to get the Sox going and his GS in game 2 of the WS. BTW,Contreras was the only losing pitcher for the Sox in the 2005 postseason. awesome
  3. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:04 PM) It's really this simple: Kenny Williams Ozzie Guillen Don Cooper Greg Walker You're the boss. You call the shots. You make the decision that you're canning three of the four. Which one do you keep? If it takes you more than a tenth of a second to answer that question, you're delusional or you're a family member or close personal friend of the three obvious guys that deserve pink slips. Actually if you are the boss, you would have the choice of keeping all four, or three, or two, or one, or none! And if you are the boss, and you're deciding which coaches are being hired or fired, why even hire a GM or manager?
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 03:12 PM) Honestly...he wouldn't excite me. See, I was right.
  5. But have the Yankees ever interviewed him? That's my requirement. I want someone the Yankees respect! Yeah, I'd like him. But I don't think Balta would get excited.
  6. So saving for retirement by investing will not work. If there was not a government program for retirement returning greater than market rates, no one could achieve social security type results?
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:22 PM) If Galveston created the same setup right now and interest rates moved back to averaging 6-7% long term, then OASDI would offer a significantly higher return than a Galveson-like program. OASDI also has much, much, much lower overhead costs than any private program. And they are offering bigger benefits which become part of your estate, not lost like in SS.
  8. And how will the government offer bigger returns? More subscribers?
  9. Welcome back, your dreams were you ticket out
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:10 PM) Yeah, when he took over the team, they went from the #16 overall payroll in 2001 to the #22 overall payroll in 2003 and had a shot at the division every year. Won the world series with the #13 payroll. Clearly he needs a big market club for success. Let me try too. What color uniforms did they wear?
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 02:04 PM) The Chicago White Sox front office. Then go back and read the part where I said if Kenny could fire the manager
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 01:59 PM) In September 2007 they picked up Ozzie's 2011 contract option. They committed to pay him for 4 more years at the end of 2007. And I'm going to believe that the White Sox were going to fire him and pay him 3 more years' salary at the end of 2008 even if the team went 30-132? This isn't an opinion there Tex. They picked up his option in the dregs of 2007. He was under contract for 4 seasons. You can't even pretend you have a case here. The earliest they'd ever have fired him was 2010, where they would have only had to pay him for 1 season. Instead they added 1 more year to his contract. Who is THEY? Did you forget we are discussing IF Kenny could fire Ozzie.
  13. QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 01:55 PM) You know if I was Kenny.. and couldn't fire my Manager.. I would quit... But, since ZERO teams want him.. I can see why he sticks it out, unemployment in this economy isn't a great thing. How do you know ZERO teams want him? Is there a link?
  14. GM openings are hard to predict. Name which teams will have openings and why Kenny would not have a chance.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 01:47 PM) At that point, he'd have been 2 years off of a 90 win team. Even sticking Jerry Owens out there, he wasn't getting fired. Sure. Balta, I have often said you could take any side in any thread and win. It now seems like you are bored and want to win both sides
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 01:38 PM) Which is why Jerry Owens opened the season as the starting LF and Carlos Quentin opened it on the bench. Because of how good Ozzie is. Owens getting hurt might well have bought Ozzie 2 more years of employment, because if Ozzie didn't have to play Quentin when he did, his team would have missed the playoffs that year too. You questioned why I thought Kenny would have fired Ozzie in 2008, then post this?
  17. SCORE!
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 12:41 PM) Why would he have been fired iafter 2008 or 2009? He won the division in 08. I said in not after. For 2008 it was early May, the team was off to a very slow start, lost to Minny 13-1 to fall to 15-18 on the season and there was some tension, IIRC.
  19. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 11:28 AM) http://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/v62n1/v62n1p47.pdf basically the galveston plan is worse for anyone but "very high income" singles over time. Well the competition doesn't like it. That's like asking Coke about Pepsi. I like the no unfunded part . . .
  20. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 11:31 AM) I'm sure they find a little solace in their bank accounts. But yes, rebuilding is becoming necessary and I'm glad that people are finally starting to get on board with it. And what makes you think they'll be picked for 4th instead of 5th? Pitching, the possibility of Dunn playing his way out of a career, yeah, some will pick them for fifth, but whatever. Some here will peg them for sixth
  21. The Texas (Perry) solution for social security . . . http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405...0912688176.html It's been working for thirty years.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 25, 2011 -> 08:20 AM) Surprised nobody has commented on this movie yet. With how bad the White Sox are, I guess everyone's watching football but you'd think at least one person here would have seen it. generally I have hated all baseball movies.
  23. I've heard and used it, in college papers, but it seems more like a term that only English majors use. It does add a nice air of superiority around here, don't you think?
  24. I place no value on another team wanting one of our coaches. So it doesn't matter if the Yankees want Coop or the Marlins want Oz. Those teams are different with different needs. I'm curious, why do some people place great value on the Yankees wanting to interview Coop while dismissing the Marlins making an offer for Oz? Seems like to be consistent you should value both the same.
  25. The fact that someone is wanted by another organization (even The YANKEES) is meaningless. If Walker was picked up by another organization after being let go would we suddenly think he was good? If Kenny came out and said the Angels inquired about Walker and we said no, would we think Walker was better? So valuing Coop because the Yankees wanted to talk to him (remember it was just an interview) is silly. It's the same as valuing Oz because the Marlins wanted to hire him and were willing to give up value to get him.
