  1. QUOTE (knightni @ Apr 15, 2010 -> 07:38 PM) If it wasn't my yard or my mower, it would be hilarious to watch. It was my yard and my mower and yes, it was hilarious to watch. Add in the dog waiting for a piece to go flying . . . And this stuff looks a whole lot better than what I bought, which literally was off the back of a truck with the crew going door to door. They claimed it was left over from a playground project.
  2. Now to catch a little offensive fire and life could be good in a week or two.
  3. It did seem to protect the kids when they fell.
  4. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Apr 15, 2010 -> 01:12 PM) loose stuff....it's recycled rubber tires. Like this stuff... http://www.rubberecycle.com/playground_rubber_mulch.asp Yep, I used it once. It may have improved from the early version I used. My biggest problem was the dog enjoyed playing with it. So he would run, grab a chunk and toss it around the yard . . . twenty or thirty times a day . . . each time with a different piece . . . every f***ing day . . . then you hit it with a mower.
  5. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Apr 15, 2010 -> 12:46 PM) Anyone have any experience with it? Thinking of using it under a playset. Some people swear its the best stuff, others have complained it gets too hot and has an order. Are you talking the loose stuff or the mats?
  6. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Apr 15, 2010 -> 12:46 PM) Bobby Cox Thank you. I would have guessed wrong. It seems that Tony has been there since the 1970s
  7. QUOTE (docsox24 @ Apr 15, 2010 -> 12:40 PM) I have always thought LaRussa was a very overrated manager. Isn't he the longest tenured manager at this time? At least with the same team.
  8. I'm surprised that Ozzie even thinks about getting fired.
  9. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 08:26 PM) Holy crap, get off your high horse. Did anyone do that? Not if there was an accident, but just as a general rule. If Pelosi and Clinton wouldn't fly with Obama to something, yeah there would be s*** said about two planes taking them. In reverse the Dems would be all over the wastefulness and the "greenhouse gases". Both sides try to make s*** out of everything.
  10. QUOTE (SI1020 @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 01:04 PM) Al Campanis the man who helped ease Jackie Robinson's transition to the big leagues. Who because of a few ill chosen words was descended upon like a pack of wolves and essentially had the end of his life ruined. Another side of the Campanis story As for Ozzie, when he was first hired it should have been obvious that he could be a train wreck waiting to happen. And I believe that Ozzie, when he makes some of these comments, also is not being knowingly racist, homophobic, etc. But, it will be his mouth, not W-Ls, that does him in. And, if I understand where you were going with the Campanis follow-up, Oz will probably not deserve it either.
  11. Something that Kalapse said earlier got me to thinking about the negativity. IF, for example, Peavy continues to slide and the worse fears come true, some people will be able to point to April 14 and say they knew way back then. Also, we all we agree at some time angst is warranted. What is the crossover point? That is probably different for every person. Some people panic at the first sign of trouble, others have much more patience.
  12. By the the time he retires, he will be my favorite Sox player. Statisticians will try to find the magic stat that will answer your question, but it is elusive. The best way to describe it is "it", as in he has "it". I would also say confidence and a positive outlook.
  13. You need an inflate-a-mate slump buster at the office. bring it in, you'll be a big hit and you won't have to worry about everyone getting fired.
  14. Ozzie's career will end in an Al Campanis sort of way.
  15. When the NHL and NBA finish their seasons, then look at the team.

    Fire Ozzie

QUOTE (Ranger @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 01:02 AM) I can't believe I just read this whole thread. We really should know better, but I just can't keep from slowing down and seeing what the thread is all about.
  17. OK, now maybe I have seen every type of trhead on soxtalk.
  18. QUOTE (Soxy @ Apr 13, 2010 -> 08:47 AM) No, they aren't lectures. At least in the cases of Practicums and Service Learning they are hands on field experiences that, when done thoughtfully, ask the student to reflect on their experience while integrating concepts from their classes and majors. There is nothing lecture-y about it when done properly. And yes, the type of instructor matters. An increased over-reliance on ad-hoc faculty (because of their cheapness) is hurting the quality of higher education. You mentioned the lecture on business practices at a prison which seems interesting but ultimately is a lecture with a different venue. I agree with everything you wrote there. I would also like to see an emphasis and promotions based more on pedagogy than research and grant seeking for college Professors. Again, it is all about control, that ad-hoc faculty may actually have experience in private industry, while the Professor never did. Having a professor with no actual experience simulating that experience for their students seems like a lesser experience than an internship. And along your point of economics getting into the equation, the hiring of younger faculty while pushing out older, more experienced (and more expensive), faculty is an issue. Also, some of these internships seems pretty crappy. Perhaps that is where the focus should be. I remember two people I hired who had great internships. They basically rotated through five different departments of a company. They were given some small things to work on after shadowing a regular employee. I understand now that some interns are little more than unpaid part time labor who do not learn too much. That is crap. Those internships should be stopped. Bottom line, the intern better gain something of value for their time. If all they are doing is unjamming the copy machine, making coffee, and filing papers, then pay them. Finally, when I was hiring people one of the questions I would always ask is how do you know you will be happy with this position? I always prefered to hear they had actual experience at a company over I took a class in college.
  19. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Apr 10, 2010 -> 09:53 PM) It is beyond me however how they put some of the elite top leaders on the same plane, President his Wife and top 5 generals who were in charge of army, navy, air force and special forces were all on that plane among many other who lost their lives. Here the "other party" depending on President would complain about the cost of flying two planes.
  20. QUOTE (Soxy @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 03:46 PM) Academic Service Learning Practicums Experiential Assignments A business class at my school just went to the prison for a lecture on Business Ethics For a good instructor, this is not a difficult task. If only there were more instructors than lecturers in colleges. My point is it is still a lecture, albeit it in a different seat. Eliminating unpaid internships seems pretty harsh.
  21. And those would be as valuable as an internship? I guess internships have turned pretty crappy.
  22. I wish we had a filter where all needlessly negative posts would be in red.
  23. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Apr 11, 2010 -> 02:14 AM) No one, not even interns, should ever work for free. Period. I've turned down internships because they were unpaid and I didn't believe in doing work without getting paid for it in return. School is for learning and jobs is for generating income, students shouldn't have to burden themselves by having to work for free just to fullfill some academic requirement. Some people like me would have to keep our old jobs just so we can do unpaid internships on the side, and even then doing an unpaid internship wouldn't be worth it. Then how would you add any "real world" experience into acadamia?
