Healthcare reform
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 10:58 AM) The funny part is many of the "savings" in the health care bill, are this exact kind of accounting. So some of the "savings" are actually from stopping some tax breaks from companies, which in effect results in higher taxes paid by corporations?

GOP refuses to work past 2pm
Like most politicians dive to the middle to get elected, Kap has dove to the right to keep things stirred up. Relax and enjoy the show. It's like have Rush on steroids visiting everyday.

The New Catholic Church Scandal
And while the Catholic Church gathers all the headlines, as a world, we did a poor job of protecting children and still do in many places. Well actually we thought we were protecting children by not making their abuse public because of the potential for taunting and teasing by other children, the embarrassment (wrongly) the parents might feel, etc. All sexual crimes of violence were treated that way. Look at the shabby treatment female rape victims received in the 50s and 60s and arguably on into today. So while it is easy to attack the Catholic Church, sports teams, schools, day cares, all Churches, had done the same thing. But without a large and visible world structure to link them all together, those get a pass on current scrutiny. And allowing Priests to marry will not stop most of this. Pedophilia is not linked to straight or gay, married or not. Look at the teachers that have molested children. Many were married women. And I don't give a rip if he was two years or two minutes form his death bed, fire and prosecute the guy immediately.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 09:38 AM) If we're going to bash the cost side of this, then let's at least be honest. The charge-off isn't due to increase costs of health care - its closing a sort of strange loophole in previous law that allow companies to get a tax-free federal subsidy for Medicare retiree costs AND still take that amount as part of a tax DEDUCTION. I mean, come on - taking a tax free income stream, turning it out the door to retirees, then taking the deduction for those costs? That's completely bogus. So yes, companies will take charges due to this, and yes, that will have a negative effect on those companies. But its also a matter of getting a corporate tax rule back to something at least resembling fairness. No individual tax payer can get a way with getting a federal grant, spending it, and then deducting it. Everyone will forget this post and remember the ones that came before. Mostly because there were more !!!!.

SOXTALK'S BOLD PREDICTIONS
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 09:38 AM) Last year, the major leagues sported 0 20 game winners. That's why this is bold. A stretch would be one 20 game winner. An easy prediction is zero.

Wood's 20 K's vs Buehrle's perfect game
QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 09:30 PM) I have also heard from a Cub fan friend that was there that day that Orie's non-play was definitely a hit. Not that I agree or disagree, but in general this is one time I always side with the guy watching 15 replays on TV versus the guy at the game. And both are pretty damn sweet and gives a guy bragging rights in almost every locker room. I'm going to add this, if that ball was fielded cleanly for Woods or ruled an error, we would be talking about that as the greatest game ever pitched. So I begrudgingly have to say Woods.

Say hey, It's Kotsay
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 10:33 PM) If Ozzie isn't the type of manager he wants, he needs to fire him and find another one. Otherwise Kenny is just as much of a part of this as anyone. But that is too simple for a message board.

You want bold? Two Sox starters win 20 games.

ESPN's Bold Predictions
When I read nice things like that I remind myself they are as clueless as the guys that pick us 4th.

How many games will this team win in 2010?
90 +- I am more optimistic than pessimistic and would be more surprised at 82 than 95.

LOL How the hell did we get here?
How the hell did we wind up with such an active political and social commentary forum? I've been here for a while and just realized that step by step we built this arena. My guess is baseball fans are generally better educated than say NFL or NASCAR.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 07:49 AM) Disagree. These days, they'd go down into their basement and spend their time posting crazy rants about how right they are on the internets, on some message board or something somewhere. Wait a minute... But they would probably avoid an actual political or editorial site and instead find a random site regarding something else and cram some political discussion in.

Happy Birthday Big Sqwert!
Happy Birthday! Your birthday and my Church's annual pig roast and fajita cookoff on the same day!? Coincidence? I don't think God works that way.

California to vote on full legalization of marijuana
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 06:25 PM) Why? It'd just be another sales tax item and regulation would fall under something like the ATF. There would certainly be orders of magnitude less people required to enforce basic taxation versus what we do now. I can grow my own food at home. I can make beer at home. I can make wine at home. I can do all sorts of things at home, but I, like most other people, still go to the store and purchase it instead. Even with taxes added on. If you have a $10 a week habit that will now cost you $20 a week, will you continue to buy from your regular place or go buy the new legal stuff? And the beer you brew or the wine you make, will probably not be as good as commercial stuff. Also, there isn't a widespread, convenient, source for illegal beer and wine. And for the tax to work there will have to be someone busting people to check for tax stamps or whatever. Those will not be ATF agents, they would have to be local police. Are we really going to keep that level of police action up?

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 03:08 PM) What exactly is the concern? Imagine if this was auto insurance. Oops! I got in an accident, I better buy some insurance. Or, damn someone broke into my home and stole everything, I better buy some insurance, I can always cancel next month. To be insured for something that has already happened, and you know about it, seems unreasonable.
-
Healthcare reform
I would support a period of time where a new disease would not be covered unless you already have insurance. It is easily the area I have the most concern about.

California to vote on full legalization of marijuana
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 02:32 PM) But...is growing it at a reasonable quality at home a cheap thing or an expensive thing? Good point, I don't know. But will the home growers cover worker's comp insurance? Product liability insurance? It is fairly easy to grow from self collected seeds. I just am not confident of this as a major revenue stream. I believe the bulk of the monetary gains will come in the reduction of arresting, prosecuting, and even sending people to prison.

California to vote on full legalization of marijuana
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 01:00 PM) Like they do now with illegal cigarettes and liquor? There is a huge difference in quality between most homemade brew and liquor and the commercial product. The difference between commercially grown pot and home grown will not be that different. Growing tobacco is almost impossible for most of the country. Finally, there just isn't the distribution channels developed for illegal liquor and cigarettes as there is for pot.

Healthcare reform
Can parents kick a 15 year old out of the house and stop being responsibile for the 15 year olds actions? Last I heard a parent can be fined and jailed if the child is truant.
-
California to vote on full legalization of marijuana
It may save money, but I don't see it generating that much. If they tax it too high, people will just continue to buy illegally. You will also have to hire more people to inforce the tax laws for it to generate the taxes. remember, this can be grown at home. Perhaps the revenue will coem in from the lazy people who would rather buy prerolled joints than grow your own. Plus, how much will commercial growers have to add for liability insurance and other hiden costs that your local supplier doesn't deal with?

GOP refuses to work past 2pm
If I understand the 2:00 rule, it doesn't mean they cannot work in their offices and actually be available to their big donors constituents. I believe there is a difference in an isolated instance versus a series of events. I believe there is a difference between being asked by the FBI to make a statementand and doing it without being asked. I feel bad for the hardcore Republican fans who are trying to defend the GOP not making the statement. I know that is what y'all would have done and what you wish your team had done.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 11:58 AM) Its a ridiculous thing that this is allowed to exist the way that it does. If the kid were taking a tylenol, or going on a field trip to the park, they would need parental permission for both, but because it was an abortion, they get a free pass for both a medical procedure and leaving campus. Amazing. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 24, 2010 -> 12:23 PM) The mom signed a consent form for medical care. There should be limits. I would think an operation would be one. And I wonder who paid for the abortion?

JD is not a good defensive RF
People have posted that guys should play for the love of the game or for the competition. Fact of the matter is, it's a job. And one he's done for a long time. It is a lot of time on the road and away from family and friends. It's living in nice hotel rooms, but hotel rooms. I can see him passing on a nice 75% pay cut. For many people here, playing in MLB is a dream. Well it is a dream he's already lived. Perhaps he'll turn up as a mid year pick up.
