  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 11:16 PM) Its the all-white Olympics... Wait, didn't I see some 45 second Sports Center promo on a black speed skater?
  2. QUOTE (Sonik22 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 08:20 PM) I think I'm going to be changing my major from marketing to sports administration. I know I won't be happy in the future if my job doesn't involve sports so I feel this is the better choice. Be certain you like the job, sometimes keeping a hobby you love works better than combining. Most of the golf professionals I know complain how they have no time to play. If you spend all your time doing "xyz" you may not see as many games or the variety. FWIW
  3. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 08:34 PM) I was at Soxfest today and Ozzie mentioned the whole- "As a manager sometimes you have to think with your mind and not your heart in order to lead a team". I thought he managed "from the gut" How about Crede at DH?
  4. We have a few Tex-Mex chains down here that serve beer. Iced down, right at the checkout.
  5. I guess I missed the support in your posts . . . QUOTE (Soxy @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 09:52 AM) What's the point? Famous (oft-crying) quarterback tells people not to get an abortion? Oh yeah, that will work. I mean, I for one always base intimate decisions on famous college athletes. GMAFB, views on abortion aren't going to be changed by this. What a waste of 30 seconds of my life and millions of dollars. QUOTE (Soxy @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 09:57 AM) But it's giving implicit support of his views. It's like saying, oh hey let's let the Hitler Foundation make a commercial about the clean air act. Um, no. QUOTE (Soxy @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 04:27 PM) He's just making a run at King of the Kaperbole. These things are best left unresponded to. yet you did . . .
  6. Balta it is a simple case of free speech. He has a story, they have personal experience, not something made up. You want to restrict that sort of speech. I don't. Soxy will support a woman's right to an abortion, but not woman's right to talk about what happened to her and the choice she made. And as I said before, I would be in favor of someone speaking about making the other choice and how it worked out. I suspect there would be ton of support for that message. And if this was set to music, there wouldn't be a problem. Pro sex, drugs, and rock and roll messages What should be a heartwarming story of a woman making a decision to carry her baby, and having everything work out, something too sugary for even a Lifetime Original Movie, provokes anger.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) Frankly, a huge amount of effort politically has, over the past few years, gone into designing and enacting laws that are either designed because it's believed that's 100% true, or because there's a need for a direct intervention to intimidate people from getting that procedure. The 48 hour waiting periods enacted, the requirements that doctors take certain steps to try to talk the patient out of having an abortion or at least provide often inaccurate information about the other negative health outcomes of having an abortion. If "not understanding that is an option" is not an issue, then it's straight out intimidation. Again, we seem to have a huge cheering section for abortion. Yet when someone speaks out against it, the attacks begin. Without even seeing the ad, it is being attacked at every angle. So let's have a pro abortion rally. People counter his commerical with a pro abortion message. Instead of trying to shut down his message, do your own. Get some poor kid with a s***ty life and have him stand there and say, I wish my mom aborted. Show some kid with birth defects and list all the reasons why his, and his mom's life, would be better if she aborted. Talk about how tough it is raising a special needs child and have the mother announce, I wish I never had never carried this fetus to term, and you will too. Show a high school kid who accidentally got pregnant and point out all the advantages of abortion. Show the woman who has had multiple abortions, and how happy she is. There are so many positive abortion stories out there, use them. Don;t like my examples, find a better story. I'll support the message being out there. The message in American is clear: Tebow stfu about your life. Go peddle beer and people will think you are the coolest Lend your name to a $300 pair of shoes Whoot Whoot But speak out about abortion?? That sucks. You're trying to INFLUENCE PEOPLE.
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:39 PM) Well, I'm not going to argue this into the ground. We all have our opinions. That being said, this isn't a commercial that is similar to any of those you listed. This is a commercial that is attempting to imply that mothers who chose to abort their fetus to avoid significant health risks somehow "took the easy way out," or are baby murderers. It also implies that had these women took their pregnancy to term, they very well might have had the next collegian football star. Instead, they murdered him by taking the "safe" and "ungodly" way out. I'm not trying to pretend as if Americans can't use this opportunity to take a leak, or turn away from the tv. I understand Americans are smart enough to see through the message. I just think it's in poor taste. I think it's playing on people's guilt and it's inappropriate. I've said enough on the topic, I think you all know how I feel. No need to continue ranting and raving. Where have you seen the commercial? I guess I need to see it.
  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 05:42 PM) Tex, obviously people aren't stupid and can see through the commercial. But why the need for it then? If not to try and influence people because he is a famous football player and all-around good guy, then why is he in the commercial? Do you really think one of the factors one counts in making this decision should be "because Tim Tebow's mother made this choice"? I just really think it is inappropriate. They wouldn't be spending the millions of dollars for the ad if not to try and capitalize on the Tebow's fame and to play on the guilt of people. If he set the message to music and played it at half time, would that be a problem? The Who may perform a song about dying young, are they just using being a famous musical group to influence your decision? Tebow's message is choose life, the Who will offer the balance, "I hope I die Before I Get Old . . . " When Joe Walsh performs One Day at a Time, a song about his alcoholism, is that wrong? I just want to listen to some music, why should I be exposed to that? Are they using their fame to influence? What's the need? When the NBA started their Stay in School campaign, wasn't that to use their player's fame? How about Reagan and "Just Say No", wasn't that using the office of the President to influence? To me, using an athlete's fame to sell cigars, alcohol, etc. should be far more upsetting to people than this. Yet, having children watch famous athletes promoting an alcohol product they may or may not have ever tasted, doesn't cause any outrage, but Tebow telling his personal, factual story, is upsetting? And by seeing through the message, are you saying that every person really should choose death? Why is a message about abortion so easy to support, but choosing life so upsetting to people?
  10. It was not as clear cut to me. I was thinking about a tourist ship docking in Florida or LA after a devastating hurricane and it did seem a little distasteful. I know after Hurricane Dolly that one of the reasons I shut down the Scout Camp was it seemed wrong to have people having a good time while others are devastated. But as others have noted, the island does need currency and we couldn't expect the cruise line to just make a donation. They should receive something in return, especially if that is how their relationship has been constructed. They built a private resort for their guests because they wanted to make an economic impact on this island. It works for both parties, why should the other, untouched, areas suffer?
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 04:00 AM) You know what needs mushrooms? A f***ing dungeons and dragons party. laughing before my first cup of coffee
  12. There's a winter Olympics? Yeah right, next thing y'all will tell me the NBA still holds a dunk contest.
  13. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 01:05 PM) No... I had a problem with fisk trying to "one up" Deion. How is yelling and screaming like a lil girl at an opposing teams player just because he doesn't run to first as fast as he would have defending the integrity of the game? Deion should have defended his integrity and punched fisk in his grill. You have a very warped sense of right and wrong.
  14. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 07:49 AM) Rock on. Ha! Nicely played Happy Birthday!!
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 01:43 PM) hmmm...when I read washington's farewell address it kind of comes across as not so much political parties are bad as much as...that other political party is bad. Washington did not have a party affiliation. He did have Jefferson and Hamilton, both from opposite ends of the spectrum battling it out within his administration.
  16. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 05:39 AM) Basically I just use the Internet for free porn sites and SoxTalk And we appreciate it if you keep those two separate
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 10:53 AM) The internet is noisy. People want to be heard over the din, so they yell louder. And louder, and louder. This combined with the unwillingness to dig into details, gives you the now pandemic need for people to exaggerate things to get a point across. This causes more polarity in people's words (both media and just plain people), and this is reflected in our politicians as well. Thus, the era of over reaction is really more accurately, the era of exaggeration to make a point. Its kind of sad, really. I agree. I also blame politics becoming a team sport with us versus them loyalties to political parties. It really hit home when I was teaching Washington's farewell address. Everything he predicted about political parties came true.
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 01:28 PM) As for this example, what is the difference between pharmaceutical advertisements pushing their products, and what the Tebow's and this organization are doing here? I need a physician to PRESCRIBE these drugs to me. I need to go into a doctor, and regardless of how badly I may want to take Lipitor, if I don't need it, or if it will likely do me harm because of some other health problem or some other drugs I am currently taking, that physician will not prescribe it to me. However, if I am a mother, and I am pregnant, and there is a significant or larger than customary risk involved in me taking that pregnancy to term, guess what? I can say F' off Dr. Jones, I am taking this pregnancy to term and that is my natural inalienable right in this country. So regardless of whether you agree, regardless of whether you beg and plead with me not to take this pregnancy to term, I am doing just that, and there is nothing you can do about it. And the mother can say, F' off Doc I'm having this baby with or without Tebow's ad. Do you really think that a mother does not understand that is an option? Do you really think that a Doctor would not discuss all options in this case? They can tell the Doctor to F' off, I'm not taking those drugs. You seem to be worried that she will have information that may suport a decision you disagree with. What made momma Tebow decide to accept the risks? Was it some ad on TV? This is a real life situation that people face. You may not find that decision difficult, you would just abort and move on at the slightest risk, for others it is not as clear cut. You would prefer someone makes this life or death decision after only receiving half of the information. Today, most people when faced with a difficult decision start researching, smart people research both sides. I'm not certain what I would recommend if it were my wife or daughter. I know I would support either decision. I would probably wish she would take the safe route. But I would definately want her to hear stories from both women who carried and women who aborted. I would want her to hear what went rigth and what went wrong. Sad that it seems it is easy to support the woman who aborts but if they are considering motherhood, even with risks, some people don't even want them to know it is an option. Not exactly support in my book. It takes more hubris than even Tex to tell someone what they should and should not be informed of in making a medical decision.
  19. f***, do you people see all the pharmaceutical ads that run? Where the hell is the outrage over all the drug pushing? In 30 seconds they list some symptoms so you can diagnose yourself, then tell you what drug to take. And no one here has ever mentioned it. But an add that no one has even seen, raises this much s***?!
  20. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 12:25 AM) The entire point is that this is not some simple decision. This is NOT like Danica Patrick trying to sell me a domain name. This is NOT like some sports-playing clydesdales trying to sell me beer. This is NOT Britney Spears trying to sell me a soft drink. The reason those messages work so well in a commercial forum is that the messages are inspiring us to do something extremely trivial. Something that should take about 30 seconds of thought to decide on. Something that if I make an error in judgment, because I believed everything that was said or portrayed in the 30 seconds, will only result in me having wasted a few bucks and experiencing a beer I really didn't like. What Tim Tebow, his mother, and this organization are attempting to do is sell us their beliefs and their product in 30 seconds, just like Doritos, GoDaddy.com, and Anheuser-Busch. However, their message is much more serious, much more impactful, much more personal, and MUCH MORE COMPLEX than something that fits well in between a Doritos commercial, a Pepsi Commercial, and a bunch of families and friends sitting around the living room trying to forget about what a crappy world we live in right now. Instead, I have to sit and listen to Tim Tebow, some holy rolling jock, tell me that if my wife or mother or girlfriend or whomever, is facing medical risk due to a pregnancy, that she should gamble with her life in the hopes of birthing the next Heisman Trophy winner. Well, I'm sorry, that message just isn't meant to be given in 30 seconds to a bunch of Americans trying to enjoy themselves on a Sunday afternoon/evening. And who the f*** am I, you ask? Well I'm not going on tv telling other people what to do. I'm not trying to shove my beliefs down the minds of others by putting my big mug in front of them in a forum traditionally saved for selling $3 bags of chips and guilt-tripping pregnant mothers with risk of injury or their lives to do what I tell them to do. Tim Tebow has every right to his opinion, and he can try and use him fame and notoriety to make as much wealth or do as much good as his little heart desires. But don't use it for the wrong reasons, and don't try and turn something so complex as a medical risk decision into a damned 30 second guilt trip during a day which is traditionally a carefree and fun day for Americans. As for your point about violence and sex on tv and in video games, there is a time and place for everything. The world as we live in it is not a perfect place. It involves violence and sex and some bad things. The best we can do, other than shelter our children from it until adulthood (so that they freak out when they encounter it in reality), is to compartmentalize it into a certain place where parents know where to expect it, and therefore have a chance to make a decision about whether to allow their children to consume it on their own. What the Tebow's and this organization are doing, is springing themselves on an American public hoping to enjoy an afternoon of football and creative advertising, along with family and friends, without them expecting it. Then perhaps all the children watching the game will start asking questions, and young couples faced with the decision will think, well, the Tebow's did it, and look how Tim turned out (I know, I exaggerate). Honestly, there is a time and a place for this message, and it is not during the Super Bowl. And finally, what do you say to the widowed husband, whose wife took the pregnancy to term and passed-away during labor, leaving him with 2 small children and no wife or mother? Should he do the commercial for the next Super Bowl? Maybe we can have him on the screen with pictures of his dead wife and his mourning children. Sound good? Who are you to tell me what I should and should not listen to? Freedom of speech is too big of an issue for you to even have an opinion on, so why are you trying to push your views on me? This is far more important that what beer I drink. And in your example You also make damn certain that that widower does not meet anyone in that same situation who moved past that and successfully raised the kids. Knowing someone else went through the same thing would be terrible. Why should non beer drinker or alcoholic be subjected to beer ads when they are trying to have a fun afternoon watching a game? Sorry that someone suggesting that choosing LIFE would be so revolting and sickening to some of the people here.
  21. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 09:47 PM) What does that have to do with the way someone thinks of a player as a person? Ty Cobb by almost all accounts was a piece of s*** of a human being, but he was great at baseball. Since I have respect for the game, does that mean I can't think of him as an asshole? Nothing. You have to read both the post and the quoted material to understand the context in which it was written. The comment was in response to a situation. That Fisk should have stayed out of another team's player's business. Fisk has said he was defending the integrity of the game or something like that. You can think he's an asshole, that's your opinion. I was defending Fisk's decision to one up Neon Deon for whatever reason. Interestingly, the original poster would have had no problem if punches were thrown, but yelling was out of line.

    QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 06:58 PM) Student Teaching. what subject? What grade?
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 06:32 PM) Despite what you have been told, size always matters. The last fist fight I was in, circa 1982, was over that very matter. And perhaps there was a free speech issue there as well.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 06:18 PM) free speech has nothing to do with what a private company decides to air on the most watched tv program of the year. Really? So the size of the audience matters?
