White Sox Acquire Alex Rios Off Waivers
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 06:53 PM) Not really. Ozzie delves into his bench a lot anyways. This may require just a little more of that, but it's going to be hardly noticeable if Ozzie plays the cards right. If he is going to have the impact that it seems everyone is hoping for, he will need the regular ABs. I do not see him as the homeless guy shuffling from spot to spot. But it's all speculative at this point. We'll see over the next couple weeks.

White Sox Acquire Alex Rios Off Waivers
His ABs are going to come from someone(s) total. Perhaps we have players thinking Great! Less playing time! I am so excited! But I really doubt it. Every pro athlete I have ever known wanted to be the guy playing every moment of the game.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 06:45 PM) Team success over individual success... I'm pretty sure most of these guys grasp that concept. I am certain they do also. But being benched basically ends a guy's career with a team. Who is going to be enthusiastic about that?

White Sox Acquire Alex Rios Off Waivers
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 06:39 PM) These guys are professionals, and it'd be fairly selfish of Dye (or anybody else) to get angry over lost PT while there are players like Jim Thome on this team who appreciate the kind of efforts KW is making to put this team in a position to win it all. And they are also competitive and want to play.

White Sox Acquire Alex Rios Off Waivers
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 06:23 PM) Different teams can have different definitions of dumbass contracts. Is he overpaid as of now for his performance this year? Yes. Is it by a huge amount? No. Is his contract so large that it's going to interfere with us filling other holes in teh future? Likely no. Is he playing a position where, based on our recent history, it makes sense for us to pay a premium price? yes. Do we have more to spend than Toronto right now? Yes. Is this a good post? Yes. Does it all make sense? Yes. Would everyone posting this way be a good thing? No. I kid because I care

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 06:19 PM) This is reminiscent of the Griffey acquisition, KW is just telling Ozzie to sort it out. Damn, you had to rain on the parade

White Sox Acquire Alex Rios Off Waivers
After several decades of being the team that sits on the sidelines and watches the big boys spend, this is a very cool summer. I am looking forward to the fall.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (Shamrock4Life @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:47 PM) Why would you even think about putting any player on irrevocable waivers in August? Thats just dumb. It was reported the 6 teams put a claim in on Rios. Only MLB and Toronto knows for sure who those teams were. Over the past 4 days, I bet Ricciardi has talked to each one of those front offices about what they would give up in a trade in the offseason. Which is another part of the game. Does JP believe these other GMs and try the offseason market with Rios hoping to start a bidding war? Does KW think that other teams are tell JP they will offer more than what the White Sox (or the team that claimed him) are lying or are they really going to offer that in the offseason? If KW thinks that JP thinks that those teams are being truthful, KW has to up his offer. JP's job is to make KW think that he thinks they are being truthful. 12:30pm is the deadline for the transaction tomorrow. So, imo, if we don't hear anything by 1:30pm, the Rios wasn't acquired. The team with the worst record "wins" the claim and is the only team they can negotiate with. That is also the only team the Jays would know placed the claim.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (farmteam @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:28 PM) Why would they place him on irrevocable waivers -- better to see if they can get anything for him, maybe a mid level prospect, and if not, still let him go for nothing anyway. That is in answer to those that claim the Jays *have* to dump him at any cost.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) The thing is, KW doesn't NEED Rios. Would he help? Most likely, but you also don't know the effect it has on Dye/Q/Pods not playing everyday. The pressure is all on the Jays, its not about just saving 2 million this year, its about risking not being able to move him PERIOD in the offseason. If they take a gamble and pull him off waivers to attempt a better offer in the offseason, and don't get it, they're screwed. With the way the economy is now, there's no way teams are going to both give up big name prospects and take on that salaray. If there is no way a team will take it in the off season, why would a team take it on now? Again, there is a huge assumption they are looking to shed salary at any cost. If that was the case, they could have placed him on irrevocable waivers.

She's kind of cute. Seriously, Rep or Dem, I would be embarrassed to try to reverse an election after he was placed on the ballot. Each state had an opportunity to challenge him being on the ballot.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 02:06 PM) I don't get how the pressure is on KW. Easy in my mind. The team is in second place. KW has the pressure to win the division. I believe the most logical places to have the biggest impact down the stretch are starting pitching and the outfield. What pressure is there on the Jays? Possibly to shed $2 mil for the remainder of the year? While I do not believe there is much pressure on this deal, what little pressure there is would seem equal or even a little more on KW.

QUOTE (forrestg @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 12:59 PM) One blue jay message site one persons suggested the sox are just blocking detroit or keeping the tigers from getting him. Come on, we all know Sox fans are smarter and know what the Jays need and want to do

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
The pressure is on K-Dubya if he believes this is the piece that makes the difference in winning the division. And why else would be make the deal? No deal and the Jays remain in the same position they were in before this weekend.

Is Dye being traded for Rios???
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 12:39 PM) The defensive lapses have been amplified the last two weeks, yes. But they were there before too, and the fighting with umpires has been since early in the season. Starting to look like a trend to me. Seems like Dye is becoming a grumpy old man out there. I've been wondering how much he is hurting.

Is Dye being traded for Rios???
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 12:25 PM) This. Dye's defensive game has gotten pretty bad, but his arm is still his best asset, for what that's worth. TCQ has a worse arm, but covers a lot more ground. It therefore makes zero sense to have those two flip positions. Dye just needs to be moved to DH, or possibly converted to 1B if he can pick up that skill set. 1B would be interesting, but I just can't feel optimistic about the chance of him being successful. Plus, I worry his offensive skills would suffer while he makes the adjustment.

Confirmed: White Sox claim on Alex Rios on waivers
There is no harm in fans speculating, K-Dubya's job is to analyze and if he wants Rios, to determine what it will take. His speculation is everything.

In the AL, they move to DH

"Let's run a few guys through waivers and see if we are blown away with any offers, plus, we need to sell some tickets" you know, just idle speculation on my part.

Is Dye being traded for Rios???
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 9, 2009 -> 01:15 PM) That's because your definition spans all players, mine for example only includes major league everyday outfielders and among everyday outfielders in the majors right now Jermaine Dye is in the bottom 3 defensively, he's a DH masquerading as an outfielder. I'd say that qualifies as atrocious. And based on your definition, I would agree. So atrocious in your book is still employed as a MLB outfielder. In fact, every year there are, by definition, three atrocious outfielders.
