QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Feb 27, 2009 -> 08:18 AM) The only thing im going to say is, if at 18 your old enough to die for your country but not drink alcohol? To me that seems like quite an injustice in our society. At 18 most are either out of highschool or close to it also, so it would make sense that it be the legal age.... especially since college kids are going to drink anyways while at college. What are the overlapping skills and concerns for military service and drinking? Look at military jobs for 18 year olds. Aim this rifle at this target and shoot. I know 13 year olds that can take down a deer. I don't want them drinking. Drive this truck and supplies to this location. I know 15 year olds with driver's licenses, I don't want then drinking. When the drinking age was 18, too many 18-20 year olds were dying for drinking. The number of alcohol related deaths was higher in that age group than any other. It is interesting to suggest that because this law is broken so often, we'll just drop the law. It would pretty much eliminate speed limits in this country. I don't see why we should also take away their right to vote and serve in the military. 18 year olds prove they could handle those responsibilites and did not cause a danger to themselves and others. If 20 year olds caused too many military deaths to their fellow soldiers, I imagine that would change as well. Actually, I don't see why they would even be linked. A 30 year old can also die for his country, but not serve as President. I am kind of shoked so many would take away voting rights from anyone who is not old enough to drink.

QUOTE (The Gooch @ Feb 27, 2009 -> 12:57 AM) So if 16 year olds can make decisions like an adult and be tried as one, why can they not smoke, drink, or vote? It has also always bothered me that individuals can join the military and vote at 18, yet they are not seen fit to drink alcohol. I don't understand how someone can be trusted to vote in our country's leaders but yet they are not allowed to drink. The difference becomes the ages and stages. When an 18 year old votes, there is an assumption in this country that only qualified candidates are allowed on the ballot. What is the down sides to them making a mistake and voting for the "wrong candidate"? But if you think they should have to wait until 21, I would be interested in learning why. If you also believe that military service should begin at 21, I guess I would be interested in hearing why. It seems that most 18 year olds have the capacity to serve, and serve well in the roles they are given. Most 16 year olds know right from wrong and the consequences of their actions. When they commit a crime, they should receive an appropriate punishment. There should be some flexibility based on the unique facts of the particular case, for young adults who fall in the gray area of 15-18. If you believe that they should also be allowed to drink and vote, again, I do not see the parallels. I can hear the howls of protest if a lawmaker said, since this age group can't drink, we are also taking away their right to vote and serve in the military.

I remember being out at Elgin CC for an outing and Kerr was out fishing one of the ponds. We all stopped and said hello. I asked him if all the interruptions bothered him and he said something to the effect of not wanting to know what the alternative is. Bummer. This is like Hawk and Crede dying on the same day.

Sloan and Van Lier were a hell of a back court. I remember coaches telling us to watch them and do what they did. RIP

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 25, 2009 -> 11:27 PM) but the geek in me would decide to spend months studying for it anyway. And by study, he means drinking a lot of beer. Something similar to all majors.

I thought I would share My current electric provider Green Mountain Energy Pollution Free Plan 14.34 cents/kWh No need to heat or AC this past month, so cheap month. Only $55. Most homes here are 100% electric, no natural gas. I am paying slightly more than I could with a longer commitment or less environmentally friendly production methods.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 25, 2009 -> 11:37 AM) That's why I prefaced my post with note: I have not stated my opinion. Truthfully, if the roles were reversed, and Obama gave a suck speech and Jindal rocked the house, the reaction would be the same, and that's more my point. And the REP reaction would also be the same.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 05:11 PM) The problem will of course be...what will that residual force be doing, and what happens when they come under attack? Exactly.

Hell, I've booed guys on the current roster, so I would not have any problems booing when deserved. But I would offer a nice applause when appropriate.

I just realized we probably have every college in a university covered around here. It is an amazing mix of smart people, something you would not get on say a NASCAR site. So how about a roll call. What formal or informal field of study are/were you in? I will have, Lord willing, by May 6th of this year B.A.s in English Lit and Psychology.

Basically the population of Des Plaines or Downers Grove is staying behind.

I don't believe they should be merged, but perhaps the FDA should concentrate on drugs and the USDA on food. There will be huge upfront costs, but I now believe you are correct, there would be savings down the road.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 02:45 PM) Yup! And guess what? They still get the service! So what is everyone b****ing about? QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 02:49 PM) The fact that they clog up the ER, which is the only place they can get service? The fact that because they don't get preventative care, they end up costing all of us more money? The fact that some of them could afford it if it wasn't so obscenely expensive? Thanks. NSS about sums it up. We have a broken, costly, system. Why hasn't the private system solved the problems?? Private industry is perfect! They always find the best, most cost effective solution that makes American grrrrrrrrreat! LOL just trying to give Kap a target I gotta run. Y'all have fun

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 02:44 PM) Once again, the only thing big enough to save us from anything and everything, is the government. They have to control all the money and redistribute it to roads, education, health care, senior citizens (read: old people retirement). They are also incentivized to do everything the right way! They are all-knowing, elected officials elected to take care of us! Thanks, government! You do it all for us so that no one has to do anything for themselves! Utopia, baby! /counter argument awaits that "free market" destroys everything by greed, yea anarchy! The middle, more toward self correcting market with some oversight is the right way. I am truly missing your point(s) Roads are not a valid project for government to be involved in? All education should be privatized and parents pay? Damn, I wish I was in a mood for fighting with you I just can't dance today, too busy.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 02:22 PM) There is one thing about a true medical mistake and pain and suffering punitive damages. Then there's outrageous bulls***... and that's the problem. yes sir. and there is also the uninsured who are basically getting services for free.

We could make the US look more like Mexico or (insert cheap manufacturing place here), but do we really want to drive on those roads? We could save on our military. We could encourage our seniors to lose weight by only eating rice once a day. We could cut waaaaay back on our education system. There are all sorts of things we could do to make this as attractive as (insert 3rd world country here).

It's all about how the veterans are playing and what the other team's roster looks like. Who would have imagined last season Griffy being traded?
