The indoctrination starts already
Never before has man had such a great capacity to control his own environment, to end hunger, poverty and disease, to banish illiteracy and human misery. We have the power to make the best generation of mankind in the history of the world. President John F. Kennedy f*** that, we have no time, we want to get paid, make criminals do it, etc. etc. . . . The indoctrination starts already
QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 08:09 AM) lol I missed the "for free" part. How in the hell is $40/hour free? If you worked at that rate for a full year then isn't that damn near $100K? Just over $80,000. 52 week X 40 hours = 2080 hours. Use 2,000 as a guide when calculating $/hr into annual. HR tiop from the pros when interviewing candidates.

The indoctrination starts already
Something for everyone, rich and poor, Dem and GOP . . . Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead Service to others is the payment you make for your space here on earth. Mohammed Ali The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Edmund Burke, British statesman and orator Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve... You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love... Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The magnitude of our social problems will require that all citizens and institutions make a commitment to volunteering as a way of life and as a primary opportunity to create needed change. George Romney, former Michigan governor No matter how big and powerful government gets, and the many services it provides, it can never take the place of volunteers. Ronald Reagan Throughout my life, I've seen the difference that volunteering efforts can make in people's lives. I know the personal value of service as a local volunteer. Jimmy CarterWe make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give. Winston Churchill No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it for someone else. Benjamin Franklin When you cease to make a contribution, you begin to die. Eleanor Roosevelt Volunteering is hard. It does take away from TV, video games, socializing, studying, cleaning the house, and the myriad of things we do. But sports league end when volunteers dry up. Animals are not rescued, oceans remain polluted, literacy loses, hunger increases, school events fail. But hey, those are correct who say they have no time and only want to do something if they get paid. It takes a special kind of person to coach a bunch of third graders in baseball, and not everyone could or should do that. If you really want a paycheck for helping out like that, stay home, ride the back of the bus, you are not the role model that these kids need.

When is it right for everything to taste like bacon?
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 06:29 AM) The world would be a perfect place if everything was made of bacon. Talk about bringing home the bacon . . . The whole damn home would already be bacon.

QUOTE (MAX @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 01:47 AM) How is someone who is in college and working their ass off to pay for it going to find an extra 100 hours to work for free? Two hours per week? Can you coach a little league team? Then you have it covered. Help at the Boy's and Girl's Clubs once a week, done. When you find the community service project you have a passion for, it's really easy. Imagine if drinking in bars and talking to cute girls was community service, how many hours would the average college male have each year?

Obama's Cabinet and Staff
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 07:35 AM) Apparently we aren't going to see eye to eye here. I personally see Obama expressing reservations about involving lobbyists in anything financial or policy, but also realizing that you simply cannot have NO lobbyists across the board. Again, he and his administration can't change everything, but they will change some things, and that's what I expected all along. And not everything a lobbyist does is wrong. We see the biggest lobbyists with the most money and see what they do. We also miss all the lobbyists for the smaller causes that have access only because they can hire someone who already knows the turf. A few years back I went in support of the Manufacturers Assistance Centers who were having their budget cut back to the level that they could keep the doors open, but not deliver any programs. The lobbyist that was hired lined up a few appointments, gave us maps, some training, and we knocked on every Senator and most of the Congressional doors. Lobbyists help keep staffs informed of specific issues. They are another expert, albeit slanted and biased, that staffers can use. The staffs are adept at separating the wheat from the shaft. Remember, every time you contact your elected officials about their stance on an issue or offer your opinion, you just became a lobbyist.

Alexei Ramirez - 2nd in Rookie of Year Voting
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 10, 2008 -> 02:29 PM) Exactly where he should have finished... Personally I hate that professionals from other countries are considered rookies here, but that is another story. It is hard to give an all encompassing definition that fits everyone but if you are playing against the highest level of talent available overseas, it seems you should be ineligible.

Alexei on move to SS, Viciedo...
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 07:20 AM) Diminished value for Josh Fields could still be a lot higher than many fans think. He's shown prodigious power at the Major League level and is under team control for a long time. Contrast that to someone like, say, Brandon Wood who hasn't, yet still gets talked about by some like he's the greatest thing yet to come. I keep thinking how most fans thought Maggs would get a $500,000 incentive heavy contract because he wasn't worth much coming off the injury and not being able to run. I'm not comparing, just offering an example of how some GMs think. It's all about projecting what the guy will do from today forward.

How Long Does Obama Get To "Blame it on Bush"?
QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 11, 2008 -> 06:34 PM) I've noticed that presidents don't usually go out of their way to criticize each other once they're done campaigning. I don't remember Clinton ever criticizing Reagan or either of the Bushes, Bush didn't openly criticize Clinton, and he stayed quiet while Obama pummeled him before the election. Obama's probably going to stay quiet a while now. All of this talk of blame is generated by blogs, editorials, and talk radio. It will not be by name, but more along the lines of, the economy was in the toilet when we took office, we had this and then that and the "previous administration" had done this, etc. It will take us more than a to fix this and see what we have done. So can he say a year from now that the problems are still from the mess that Dubya left and it is unfair to judge his actions. Can he say that 2 years from now? I'm guessing Dems will give him 3 years or so and the GOP about 5 1/2 minutes. Actually some GOPs, , haven't even given him time to get in office.

Sports and Politics
QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 11, 2008 -> 01:22 PM) I'm just a political junkie that likes to talk to other smart people about politics. Who happens to love the Sox enough to sign up for a fan message board. I talk more politics here in a week than I do in four years of real life. I know I have learned a lot from many of the posters here, and at the minimum have an understanding of the other side.

Music Thread
I love great surprises. The University Program Board sponsored a Blues Night. I figured what the hell, for free and I could use a little walk across campus. Amazing vocalist. I was really impressed. They only did about 1/2 blues, the rest was some straight up R&R and some Michael Jackson. I can not remember a voice so powerful and clear in what amounts to a bar band. They did mostly covers, but their covers from Yellow Ledbetter to Miss You were pretty damn good. Nice outdoor area near our library. Just a fun evening. I'll probably catch their full show at one of out better clubs this week.

How Long Does Obama Get To "Blame it on Bush"?
With communications and computers things happen so much quicker than 100 years ago when many of these traditions started. Today, FDR could not declare a "Banking Holiday" and hold a fireside chat. People would be on-line withdrawing money faster than the government could close the gates. Obama gives a speech and the Dow falls in real time to what he is saying. The Feds adjust the interest rate and banks are able to follow in minutes, not the weeks it took previously.

I never thought I'd say it, but...
Hell, most of what he wrote was so obvious and stuff that was written here and elsewhere by fans. But it became b.s. when Jay said it.

Sports and Politics
Of the groups I discuss politics with, this group is the most extreme. I've always blamed it on the medium. We rarely ever see each other face to face, it's fairly anonymous here. But I'm now wondering if it is because we are all fairly rabid sports fans as well. This McCain v. Obama and other issues sometimes take on something closer to Sox v. Cubs than something from Face the Nation. Either way, we do not reflect society as a whole.

Proposition 8 in California
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 11, 2008 -> 08:49 AM) The video: The more I think about it, he's really not right here. Couples do not need the government to tell them they are in love, or to approve their love. They already know what is in their heart. It is, as Rex has pointed out, about the benefits and rights that we as a society offer the people who link up legally. A marriage or civil union certificate on the wall doesn't prove love. Men and Women that enter this agreement doi not have to be in love to receive the benefits. So while Obermann's essay is touching and poignant, it obscures the issue. This is about hospital visitations, filing jointly on a tax return, not being forced to testify against the other in a trial, automatic rights as a survivor, etc that other couples get. This is cold, hard, black and white, differences. that need to be made equal.
