Does anybody know the history of the changeup?
QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 15, 2008 -> 04:32 PM) Forget heat - If you have location and accuracy, that batter is dead to rights. Forget heat - If you have location, accuracy, and a frisbee-like release, that batter is dead to rights at least once, maybe twice.

Denis Savard fired
QUOTE (Mr. Showtime @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 07:46 PM) I'm sure after the smoke clears on all of this that Denis will be brought back to do PR stuff like Bobby and Stan do for the team. Unless there was some real bad behind the scenes incidents, Denis loves the Hawks to much to not be around. When you get fired like this, your love of the organization probably goes away for a while.

Denis Savard fired
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 10:28 AM) What a stupid move. Why the hell would you fire a coach four games into a season that way overachieved last year? If he was on thin ice, he should have been fired in the offseason so that a coach could have time to teach his systems to the players over the course of a training camp. Now they have to learn a whole new system 4 games in? Dumb. I have to agree with this. Didn't mamma Sutter have another son we haven't hired yet and made coach?

Nickname thread!
I played on a traveling baseball team and five of the players were all named Jim. Jim Adkins got to keep his name. Fitting because he was our Captain and best player Jimmy Lubtack became LBJ as in led bottom Jim Jim Valentine became Valentine Jim Durkin became mouse because his dad was an exterminator and had a giant mouse on his car. And with one mighty swing and a miss during a practice, I became

OMG MET Music History Available On-Line
Linked I get chills thinking about all of the very greatest performers who have graced the Met's stage through the years. Those performances are dating back to 1937 and now will be streamed to your computer. I can't image Joan Sutherland could have imagined it when she was in her prime performing.

Palin's Other Man Revealed
We tell politicians that it is ok to be less than trustworthy and honest in some areas, but not others. We deserve what we get when the lines blur and they are dishonest.

Palin's Other Man Revealed
Sad when being a role model isn't even factored in as President of the United States.

Danks now an elite pitcher
While attention will be given to picking up the cutter, IMHO what is more important is something the organization cannot teach, a gunslinger attitude and a ton of nerve. That, is the biggest difference in Javy and Danks. Not the quality and type of pitches, but the ability to throw them under pressure. And iut cannot be taught. You may get better with exposure, but 90% you either have or you don't.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 15, 2008 -> 10:34 AM) lol. The funny thing is I didn't even notice the site name. I got there through a couple of other clicks of stories that were interesting. I guess I am just well read. It is normal to experiment, and if you are intrigued by liberals, you may wish to vote Democratic once

Official 2008-2009 College Football Thread
I've only watched part of one Alabama game, but I'm a little surprised that Texas went all the way to #1. Probably the kiss of death this season for the Longhorns.

Palin's Other Man Revealed
QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Oct 14, 2008 -> 09:08 PM) Yeah, thanks. I kinda knew that. What I didn't know is why you claimed this particular piece of info made a "huge difference" between the two offices in any respect, which is what I tried to ask. Personally, I could care less if any candidate cheated; not because I think "character" or even "morality" is unimportant, but because I don't know the specifics of their relationships and try to base my votes on their positions on other issues. I think this is a total non-issue; you seemed to term it "huge" (at least in relation to the president) and mentioned avoiding another Clinton, as if a candidate's past indiscretions meant we'd be in for more blue dresses, special prosecutors, and impeachments. I wasn't sure what you meant and was trying to understand. Still am. I believe Clinton was rendered almost useless during the Lewinski hearings and the final couple years of his Presidency. Any action he would take was judged based on "tail wagging the dog". I would prefer to not repeat the spectacle of a President explaining blow jobs in the Oval Office to Congress and the American people. Also, when the President takes the oath of office, I would like to think he actually understands what an oath is. Perhaps you are comfortable with him doing it with "his fingers crossed behind his back", but I am not. Your positions change easier than your character. What I termed huge was the difference between the Presidency and the Vice Presidency, not the acts in question.

Palin's Other Man Revealed
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 02:50 PM) Now we get to see the other side of the coin? http://www.postchronicle.com/news/original...212178557.shtml And there is a huge difference between THE candidate having these issues and the VP candidate. Do we really want another William Clinton in office?

StatManDu
QUOTE (rangercal @ Oct 14, 2008 -> 05:19 AM) If that's all accurate, I would have no problem with them retiring 77 even before 05. It is accurate up to the conclusion. The franchise would have survived, it just would not be the Chicago White Sox. And based on teams moving, even well established ones, retiring a number because it helped keep the team in a city, would seem really strange when they eventually move. It was the team that sealed my membership in the Sox fan club for life, but I'm just not into retiring the number. A monument would be better and it better include Nancy Faust who was as much a part of those memories as anyone. In a sense every time we sing, Na Na Hey Hey we are paying tribute to the summer of swat.

Should Election Day Be a Holiday?
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) I would love to see election day a holiday. The thing is I bet it would make a minimal difference in voter turnout in the long run. People who want to vote, will vote. Those who don't, won't. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) Probably a small increase, but you're right, not a huge one. I think it has another benefit, though. It gets people thinking about it, and taking it more seriously in their lives. Organizations and communities can host discussions and panels where people talk it out, before going to the booth. I am going to be a cynic and propose it would lower voting as people use it as an excuse to go somewhere, do something. For example taking Friday off as well and adios out of town. Technology is making it easier and easier to vote. We already allow absentee paper ballots, I see a day with absentee computer ballots. There are many issues with voter intimidation and fraud to be worked out, but I believe they can.

The Economy, stupid
In light of the economic crunch and the fact that many ordinary folk as well as millions of seniors will have lost much of their hard earned savings, I believe we should lobby for a relaxation of the passive income laws in order to allow all or some of these losses to be used against other income. Capital losses can be deducted at $3,000 per year and can only be deducted against Capital gains. Further, I don’t think this figure has been changed since the Internal Revenue code of 1986 was enacted. I am almost 50 years old and will never in my lifetime be able to deduct all of my losses at $3,000 per year. I also know many who will not ever be able to fully deduct their losses. I believe it is time to start lobbying Congress.
