QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) I would love to see election day a holiday. The thing is I bet it would make a minimal difference in voter turnout in the long run. People who want to vote, will vote. Those who don't, won't. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 03:02 PM) Probably a small increase, but you're right, not a huge one. I think it has another benefit, though. It gets people thinking about it, and taking it more seriously in their lives. Organizations and communities can host discussions and panels where people talk it out, before going to the booth. I am going to be a cynic and propose it would lower voting as people use it as an excuse to go somewhere, do something. For example taking Friday off as well and adios out of town. Technology is making it easier and easier to vote. We already allow absentee paper ballots, I see a day with absentee computer ballots. There are many issues with voter intimidation and fraud to be worked out, but I believe they can.

In light of the economic crunch and the fact that many ordinary folk as well as millions of seniors will have lost much of their hard earned savings, I believe we should lobby for a relaxation of the passive income laws in order to allow all or some of these losses to be used against other income. Capital losses can be deducted at $3,000 per year and can only be deducted against Capital gains. Further, I don’t think this figure has been changed since the Internal Revenue code of 1986 was enacted. I am almost 50 years old and will never in my lifetime be able to deduct all of my losses at $3,000 per year. I also know many who will not ever be able to fully deduct their losses. I believe it is time to start lobbying Congress.

4 players that went home AFTER getting to Tampa

QUOTE (YASNY @ Oct 12, 2008 -> 04:49 AM) No, it didn't do any good for these players to leave. No, it didn't do any harm as far as the playoffs go for these players to leave. Still, it was a piss poor choice. They f***ed up and there will be a price these guys have to pay. They can overcome it, but they flat out sent the wrong message. Great summary. I just hope the price they have to pay doesn't hurt the team's chances. In fact, I'm wondering how they pay a price that isn't at the team's expense. It would seem we would want the best players on the field and the players on the team would want the best chance to win. So how exactly does AJ and the rest of the team not forget those guys left keep the best team on the field support the guys playing to play their best make the three pay a price -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 06:45 PM) Or lying under oath... Which is something we all should agree is not what we want from any elected official again. That was wrong then and would continue to be wrong in the future. But we get what we accept. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 06:47 PM) Out of curiosity, does anyone find it unethical when Obama uses his power to try to shutdown people he disagrees with? Because this is pretty much exactly what Palin did. Is anyone wanting to investigate Barack? I want to have him investigated, and McCain. In fact, that should be the minimum we do anytime someone runs for office. I wonder however, because of his lack of managerial experiences he just hasn't had the opportunity to do something like this. So in a sense Palin, because she has the most of any of the guys, is at a disadvantage when comparing records.,

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 06:49 PM) Unless you come up with an extra 20-25% of pay to compensate teachers for working year round, the NEA isn't going to allow this to happen, no matter what studies show. Summer school is already being taught and paid for, so the cost increase would not be the full amount. Plus it would not be year round, as I mentioned just four more weeks. It cuts the summer vacation from basically 12 weeks to eight for two of the three summer vacations a student receives. Teacher would receive 8 weeks off during the summer, a couple three weeks during the year (Christmas and Spring Break) So they would be working about a 40 week calendar. At least in Texas, 180 days of class is the minimum, this would bring it to 200. In overall terms, we would be looking at about a 10% or less increase. Depending on subjects, and thinking of things like the finance course, which many H.S. teachers may not be certified for anyways, it may not even need to be certified teachers. Perhaps internships from college Ed programs. I'm just kicking ideas around, there are other hurdles no doubt, but just mandating more and more required courses without any additional time, has issues as well.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Unless Mizzou wins by 3+ scores I don't see how Texas isn't No. 1. Even if that happens, it should be close. How far do you fall in the top five by winning is always the question. -
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 01:54 PM) Today I was helping my wife out at an event for the plainfield Humane Society. It was an open house for a new strip mall, and the HSP had a table there with a few of the dogs, an available for adoption list, donation container, etc. It was fun, talking with people, showing off a cute dog to people (7 month old beagle available, if anyone is interested.) All in all a good morning and early afternoon. On the way home, however, my car got rearended by another driver. Everyone seemed fine, however after looking at the cars, I am supremely disappointed with Mitsubishi. My Galant has the back bumper barely hanging on, the trunk is bent 9 ways to sunday, the taillights smashed, and the rear quarter panels are dented where the bumper and trunk met them. Her car, a Prius, was barely scratched. A big dent in the middle of the front bumper, and some scratches, but not even an airbag deployment. Glad she has insurance, and not with some cheapo place like Eagle. If you walked away without any discomfort or injury be happy with your car. The goal of the car design is to protect the passengers and to that goal, it sacrifices itself and takes the impact.

QUOTE (danman31 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 11:20 AM) This Texas game is already high scoring. I didn't see that coming. I like OU to win by quite a lot. I should not be awake yet, stupid 11am start time. Hmm, I liked Texas. I know, what a surprise So far it has been a great game. -
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5i4OpiwX...lig0FgD93O3N3G0 I applaud McCain for his honesty. Too bad it doesn't work to get elected. I am starting to feel sorry for John.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 12:25 PM) You'd face major resistance, it'd just never happen. I know, the proposals have been around for 40 years. Summer schools are already setting record attendance as kids try to get a head start on college. So it is happening, it just isn't required.

QUOTE (BobDylan @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 12:28 PM) Change your locks, hide the weapons. She's comin'. Call your provider or look at your phone bills. The bill should list the source. It just lists the total text messages. I've tried "Stop" and "End" as commands, but that hasn't worked. I'm not getting charged, but sometimes I like to sleep late and the "ding" of a text message waked me up. I'm an old man, don't be messin' with my sleep.

4 players that went home AFTER getting to Tampa
Texsox replied to klaus kinski's topic in Pale Hose Talk
BTW Dick, if you have known someone for a couple years, like him, thinks he's a good guy, and he makes one mistake, do you dump him and think he's a terrible person? You seem to be forgetting these guys have been together for a year or two. They will have a long memory about these guys getting cut and leaving, but have immediately forgotten everything else they have done. That this also trumps anything on the field. But OK Wasserman has made his career and Broadway et. al. careers have ended. Cool. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 11:25 AM) They disrespected their teammates. If it wasn't a big deal, Farmer and Stone, a couple of guys who played in the major leagues wouldn't have gone on and on about what a mistake it was. Farmer and Cowley wouldn't have mentioned how it irked players and management. These three obviously have forgotten what a lot of players always remember. Wearing a major league uniform is a priviledge. I ask you, what good does it do to go home? What good for your career does sitting on your ass do? I'm telling you, and you aren't buying, the guys who left had their status with their teammates go down a couple of pegs for not wanting to be with them. As I have said at least a dozen times, it did not do any good for those players. I believe it did not do as much harm as you believe. Do you really believe that AJ gives a rat's ass about the AAAA guys and if they were sitting in the clubhouse? Too bad the rest of the Barons didn't buy tickets to show their support. -

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 10:53 AM) Of course, in Tex' day, things were much different. [begin grainy sepia-toned film] "Why hello, darlin'. If it wouldn't be a heap of trouble for you, would you be interested in walkin' with me down to the General Store? I need to get some picklin' jars, but it'd be mighty nice to sit down and have a cherry phosphate with a charming young lady such as yourself." [/old] Should I have said I got me half a football field, wanna spark my Maserati and chill?

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 10:57 AM) Nope. Both teachers and students need that time. A minimester would lack the focus that you'd want. No one would want to be there. School calendars in other countries have shown there isn't anything magical about 11 weeks versus 7 weeks off. If humans truly needed that much of a break from their jobs, we'd all have three month vacations instead of two weeks. Imagine a bricklayer or accountant can work 50 whole weeks a year, but teachers can only work 38? And, knowing teachers outside of school, almost all are working jobs during the summer. They are already teaching summer school, or taking seasonal jobs. Even with the current schedule there are kids who will not want to be in class. NSS, I guess I should have been clearer, there is such a pressure for various college tracks, where to earn the distinction you need 4 years of math, science, and English. 3 years of a foreign language, two years of fine arts, two years of PE. Then health, and a couple I can't remember, that left 3 open electives.
-
And it is a fact of politics that every campaign attracts an element that candidates would wish go away. Who would the racist, nazi loving, n***** hating, voters turn? I'm not going to attack McCain for that, nor will I attack Obama for the wack jobs he attracts. Or are you suggesting that Obama is part of a vast Muslim extremist plot to get him elected then he will transform the United States into an extremist Muslim country? Much like Bush was able to do with his Christian Faith Based Initiative during his candidacy? Because obviously a Muslim Initiative would be even easier to pull off than a Christian one in this country.

During Hurricane Doly I signed up for a plethora of weather related text messages. I have one lingering alert that tolls in 7:00 am every day from 401. I can't for the life of me remember who is sending and replying with stop has not turned this one off. Any ideas? I've been to weather.com accuweather, com and wunderground.com and it doesn't seem to be from them.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 10:32 AM) Eh, I think its important for kids to play in the summer. Even high school kids. I'd rather see fewer electives. My kids were down to 3 electives over 4 years. This would give them (1) three month break and (2) two month breaks.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 09:17 AM) I've said, I don't know how many times in here... high school curriculums should REQUIRE a full class on basic finance in order to graduate. It staggers me that many students graduate high school not even knowing how to balance a checkbook, or knowing the basics of what a mortgage is. I agree, but when you look over what is already required, it is tough to fit in more required courses. Low math and science scores? Add required courses. Fat kids? Require more PE. Teen pregnancy? Sex Ed. My solution is longer school years. A four week "minimester" in June or August that addresses stuff like this. It would be required during two of the three High School summer vacations. Health, Finance, etc. Or complete a private program approved by the school district. It could even be on-line.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 10:48 AM) lets switch a few things around. Say a McCain staffer hosted a community meeting/pep rally and some of the people who were INVITED (not just attended, but they were INVITED) were unsavory? Maybe a few people with strong ties to white supremecy groups, or something along those lines. Just a yawn? I can guarantee you that within 5 minutes of it being printed or broadcast anywhere, AHB would have a post on here about how bad this is for the McCain campaign, followed by 30 more posts from you, Balta, Kip and others trying to downplay AHB's enthusiasm, but reiterating that it sure looks bad. I just can't believe that Obama's ties and connections to some pretty bad people like Ayers, Dorn and others doesn't bother you guys in the least. I can understand that it may not change your mind, but how can it not give you pause, just for a moment? I don't think you have been reading NSS and some of the others you mentioned. They have been extremely fair in this regard. Specific to NSS, he has been much more equal than some of the hardcore GOP on the board such as you pards.

4 players that went home AFTER getting to Tampa
Texsox replied to klaus kinski's topic in Pale Hose Talk
In rereading through the thread I think I've been really unclear. They should have stayed, no doubt Attitude at this age is important Ability is always more important, even more at this age. Rookie 90% Ability and 10% Intangibles HoF Veteran 50%-50% Of the 10% Intangibles, ass patting and cheer leading is 2%. Hustle, working out, is 8%. A year or two as a teammate playing together is way more important than one decision when you are not on the team. Cheering is overrated. Playing together and winning together bonds the team. You don't get that watching on a couch. Rookies need the support of veterans way more than veterans need the support of rookies. The playoffs are about winning, not about tryouts, and bonding. They should have bonded long before this. Players talk about the distractions of the playoffs. 25 men in the club house is normal, 35 is not. It's a long off season. How they prepare for Spring Training will be a better indicator. Logan works his ass off and Wasserman comes in fat, edge Logan.
