TV Tuners for laptops
QUOTE (BobDylan @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 02:11 PM) What he said. I think Slingbox is the only wireless option, as well. But the Slingbox has to connect to the cable box. I also have the option to just attach to my cable outlet. I was looking at the Pinnacle PCTV HD Ultimate Stick but it wasn't clear if I needed to hook up through the cable set top box or not. And, gee what a surprise, the Best Buy clerk was not too much help.

CC: Hit - No Hit ~ You Make The Call
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 01:55 PM) I think changing this from an error would be ridiculous. You can't retroactively go back and change a ruling just to make no-hitters happen. The call was made on the play at the time it happened, and it was a 50/50 call. Dozens of plays are ruled errors and or hits every day, and if we start changing them just to get no-hitters, well, that'll really mess the the rule books. Yost is so f***ing annoying it's ridiculous. He's sticking up for his guy. It may be annoying to you, but I bet it plays well in the clubhouse, and that is all Yost should be concerned with for the moment. IF and I emphasize *IF* you are going to go back, it would only happen if it "mattered". I would be most in favor of doing this for a no hitter because it doesn't take something away from one player and give it to another. An example of that would be a batting title. If that error or hit would swing a batting title, I'd clearly be against any over ruling except in a very clear cut example, perhaps fair or foul.

Call Ups
QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 12:34 PM) Ah I see I see, that I definitely agree with. Not so much here, but in other spots, people are thinking this player or that will be the difference maker, and that just seems so unrealistic to me. The greatest benefit could be extra rest for starters if somehow they clinched early, but I do not see an early clinch.

Why are you what you are?
I believe a strong building begins at the foundation and that the working class is our nation's foundation. Building from the top and hoping a foundation will appear is too risky for me. I believe we have an obligation to feed each other. I always think we can do better. I also believe there are multiple paths to the same goal and that character counts over ideology. That man is inherently good and fair. I believe in second chances. I believe that life is sacred, both for the unborn and the born and I would sooner trust the government to heal the sick then to kill people. I believe we can achieve anything we can conceive. I'm not an originalist with the Constitution, the writers are fallible, but I also believe I should be able to own a gun. I believe we need to write laws that benefit American businesses as well as the workers. That neither side always has the other side's interest at heart, or really knows what is best. I believe we need to pay for government, not leave a debt for someone else. I'd rather have a spend and tax government then a spend and borrow. Cut taxes when there is a surplus, not deficits.

Hurricane Ike to possibly slam Tex
QUOTE (shipps @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 12:21 PM) I kind of respect that actually. Its when he thinks its a good idea to give enemy troops our battle tactics by drawing in the sand during the broadcast that makes me question him. One of my early career aspirations was to become a journalist covering wars and other dangerous locations.

CC: Hit - No Hit ~ You Make The Call
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 01:00 PM) I'm sorry, but I can't see how anyone would say that's an error. It looked to me like all he had to do was pick up a slow moving ground ball and make the throw. The last frame or so shows the runner not too far down the base path. The ball did not take a funny hop, or anything like that. So from that one vantage point, it seemed like an error. I also think Balta brings up a good point, these things are rarely ever 100% unbiased and accurate. There are a few "unwritten rules" like the first hit being 100% clean.

Call Ups
QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 12:53 PM) Well in this case someone like Owens could be particularly useful even without getting ABs, so there is call up that could actually be impactful I should have been clearer. I have no expectations, anything is a bonus. There may be one of those moments.

How important are cabinet choices for Prez candidates?
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 12:48 PM) Well you have idiots like Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz who are gone so Obama wouldn't have to worry about that. It's my own opinion that Gates is highly qualified and should stay though. I could be wrong. As long as Obama doesn't gut the intelligence budget I won't have a problem with how he handles national security. If he goes for Clinton-esque cutbacks it's going to sting and I'll be pissed. If he keeps it strong like Bush has then we'll be ok. Besides talking about ending the war he hasn't indicated in his speeches that he's thinking about cutting it though, although it would be kind of dumb to do that while campaigning. I'm a big Gates fan, so I wouldn't mind seeing him around.

Call Ups
I've never hoped for any production out of any call ups. If you are trying to win a division with AAA guys, you are in trouble. If you are out of the race, it's a nice chance to get some MLB looks, but when every game, every AB matters, it's just a nicer plane ride and a nicer locker room.

Name a VP and Vett
If this was a tag team bout, I would give an edge to Obama-Biden. But we're really electing a POTUS, so it isn't quite as important.

Jay Mariotti leaves the Sun-Times!...Goes to the Tribune? Nope!
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 10:54 AM) Well, that is why I suggested maybe 6 months from now. There are a lot of people who have at least expressed that they would now read the Sun-Times again now that Jay is gone. I am one of them. i cancelled my subscription years ago, and he was a big part of the reason why. Someone at work always brought the paper in, so I read theirs. Now, I will buy my own, especially since that person no longer is with me. The biggest assumption is mine, that the Sun Times conducts research and knows what is selling and what is not. You are thinking not, or that they are ignoring data that shows he is driving away readers. And, IIRC advertising rates are computed, in part, on readership, not circulation. There is an underlying assumption how many different readers read a given copy of a newspaper. So as long as you are reading, you are helping.

How important are cabinet choices for Prez candidates?
QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 12:24 PM) I think I didn't write that correctly. I meant to talk about just the Director of Central Intelligence, not the Cabinet as a whole. My post seemed to indicate I was talking about more than the DCI. The source is a book I have (For the President's Eyes Only: Secret Intelligence and the American Presidency from Washington to Bush by Christopher Andrew) so I can't give you a link but I'll type out the passage I read that for you: "Carter's choice of DCI set an unhappy precedent. Since the foundation of the CIA, all newly elected presidents except Eisenhower had kept the incumbent DCI in office. (Ike had made Truman's last DCI, Bedell Smith, undersecretary of state.) George Bush tried to persuade Carter to keep him on, at least for a few months, to preserve the principle that the office of DCI was above partisan politics. Carter, however, failed to grasp the importance of the principle, and was anxious to make a visible break with the past." Interesting, and thank you for the follow up. I guess I'm on the side of a house cleaning. Using this race as an example. Obama has been running on a plank of Bush has this totally f***ed up and he's going to fix it. What message does that send, when if elected, he keeps all the people in place? And to me those types of positions are more important then some cabinet positions. Now when you start wiping out clerical staff and minor players like that, I start to have a problem.

2008 General Election Discussion Thread
My only interest is if McCain knew this when he selected her as his running mate. On first glance, I think I would be impressed if he knew. If he didn't, it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall when he received the news.

CC: Hit - No Hit ~ You Make The Call
QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 10:55 AM) To a point yes. You won't give a gold glove caliber fielder an error if he misplays a ball that most fielders wouldn't have gotten, but he usually does. I know that's vague though. So for example you might not give Crede an error for not getting the out when the ball is scorched down the foul line and he doesn't get the runner after diving getting up and throwing it. So had CC came up with it cleanly, he would have a chance with a good throw to get the runner. The link below describes an official error. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/offic...l_scorer_10.jsp Which is what I understood. It doesn't, matter what CC would normally do, he's judged against a "standard" drawn from all fielders.

CC: Hit - No Hit ~ You Make The Call
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 10:36 AM) Isnt that somewhat of the criteria involved, determining if the player A: could have gotten to the ball, and B: could have made the play? What i was wondering could it be an error for a great fielding pitcher but not for a poor one? Does the individual player's talents come into play? I always thought no.

CC: Hit - No Hit ~ You Make The Call
QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 10:11 AM) Then again I don't know how good CC's fielding is. If he normally makes that play then it's an error. That is an interesting comment. Should errors be determined by the individual player's talents?

Soxtalk: A History
QUOTE (Steff @ Sep 1, 2008 -> 11:11 AM) And if you go back and look you'll see that they were never flamed for their love and opinion of the Sox. It was calling people names and praising eating disorders that got them ripped apart. Steff hit that one square on the nail. When the only point of a post is to insult or inflame, it does not matter how well written or informed the post is. And when it gets personal, people are told to leave. Some for a little while, some for a very long time. And as the usual last holdout arguing against such suspensions, I can say the process is very fair, well researched, and it takes a very strong consensus before someone finds themselves on the outside looking in. Another little understood factor is if a mod has a personal issue with someone they will always sit out the debate.

I was thinking about the media people. ON one hand it is rediculous to put any lives at risk, but on the other, imagine not having news from the disaster scene.

How important are cabinet choices for Prez candidates?
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 11:21 AM) Actually the "tradition" of getting rid of otherwise qualified appointees nominated by the previous party in power started with Carter, who replaced Bush as DCI simply because he was a Republican. So if Obama did win, and kept Gates on, it would not be unprecedented, in fact I'd applaud it loudly. That is a mold that really needs to be broken. I always assumed that started long before Carter, I could not find any sources, do you have any? While early on there was some carry over, in 1841 there was a 100% turn over of the cabinet. I remember from Civics classes way back before and around Carter's time that it was traditional even for Presidents who are reelected to receive resignations from their cabinets. During Clinton's terms there was considerable debate and comment when Janet Reno did not follow protocol and offer a resignation.

Gustav and the GOP convention
Couple of thoughts. No Dick and Bush is a good thing. Perfect reason for them not to be with McCain. "Politicians in disaster zones" Overall I believe there is a benefit. Hearken back to the halcyon days of over 30% approval ratings for Dubya. He's standing on that mound of rubble, bullhorn in hand, and ready to kick some ass ~~AND~~ take care of the citizens. That my friend, is powerful stuff for the nation. And I believe one of the pivotal roles for the POTUS is cheerleader. Reagan and Clinton V1.0 were masters of this. Regan rode in on that big horse after the scandal of Nixon, bumbling of Ford, and handcuffing of Carter. He talked big and got America to believe in itself. Clinton came on the heels of sleepy Bush and invited us to a party. Youth and vigor replaced the guy with a wife who looked like his mom, and a senile old goof with bad hearing. So Bush, McCain, and Obama, please go and comfort. Make the people who just got kicked in the face believe in their ability to withstand. Make America believe we can take care of our own storm victims, much like we do for the rest of the world. Let the world look in your eyes at this moment and see if you are there because you give a s***, or you are there because your analysts and handlers tell you it's the place to be for votes. We'll tell. This will reveal your character more than :30 second attack ads and snarky youtube videos. Yoiu can't control this media event. No scripts will last long. Go get your hands dirty. Talk to Americans at their time of greatest stress.
