Ancient Soxfan Ponders Schoolyard Days
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 02:15 AM) BTW our LL manager also wouldn't let us swim. If he saw your eyes were red you were benched. Interesting what Ryan said about guys not throwing enough. I just can't help but think my friend with the powerful arm didn't do it any good busting curves from the age of 10 through 12 on almost a daily basis during the summer months, also in LL games, in Babe Ruth games, then at Bro Rice til he needed surgery. I think that throwing curves is the difference. Without the hand and wrist strength poor mechanics take over.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 06:42 PM) Frankly, I'd love to find out. I really hope the press takes a close look at all these bundlers now that it's starting to be an issue. It's bothered me for years how rich people conveniently seemed to get all their friends to contribute as well. I know one down here and basically he raises money through all his suppliers. He raised millions for the Clintons. Not much different, but on a grander scale, what Rex just did for the Aids ride or what I do for my Scout camp. Anyone who is fund raising contacts family and friends first. Not every volunteer is an eager college student working a phone bank or canvasing door to door. Some eager volunteers are people who get off on the access that comes with being a big source of cash.

Easily playing caused me to catch the fire. Having an outstanding manager when I played on a travellling team who taught us respect for the game and to play like pros also contributed.

NFL releases new code of conduct for fans
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 11:41 AM) NFL games and Cubs/Sox games are the only places I've really seen fans be treated unfairly for simply rooting for the other team. Blackhawk fans becoming civilized? Sad that the NFL has such a crummy product that only drunken brawlers will come to games or the only way to enjoy a NFL game is to get intoxicated.

Favre to the Jets
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 04:10 PM) A combination of recent performance and age/health evaluations. By past accomplishments, if you're talking about simply the fact that he was a pro-bowl QB last year, that's fine. If by past accomplishments you mean the MVP's he won so many years ago, the Super Bowls in the late 90's, the records he's set, I really don't care if I'm in the GM chair. The way I look at it...I just picked up a draft pick for a QB who was pro-bowl last year but struggled the couple years before that, who's 39 years old, and who has a big cap number. Altogether I think that's a reasonable move, and it's only because of the Brett Favre mystique that we're having this discussion. If he'd come in to the league at age 35 and put up that good of a season last year, you'd still be totally open to moving him for a 2nd rounder because damnit he's 39. When you say "Favre name" and "Favre mystique" it sounds like there are no skills to back it up. Clearly is one of the greatest QBs of our generation. There are plenty of skills still there to keep him a legitimate starting QB in the NFL this season. Just based on last season and his history of injuries, or should I say, non history. And you dismiss simply a Pro-Bowl QB last season as meaningless. Would you rather have a Pro-Bowl starter or someone that didn't make the Pro-Bowl? I think the further back you go, the less relevant experience and accomplishments become. But If I'm trying to win a Championship this year in Green Bay, and let's say for discussion in week two he lost the starting job, I'd love to have him on the sidelines as my backup. But I guess Green Bay is deep enough with proven NFL QBs to toss aside last year's pro bowl QB and still expect to win this season.

I really hope he'd still be on this list 15 years from now. I will mean he has had an excellent career.

If you do not care about past accomplishments, then what criteria would you use to predict which QB is going to offer you the best chance of winning this season?

Favre to the Jets
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 03:29 PM) The only reason this becomes questionable is when you attach the name Favre and all the skills and accomplishments that go with it. Fixed

YASNY and I, Just a couple of rednecks . . .
We have enjoyed the redneck jokes for years. It's time to take a reflective look at the core beliefs of a culture that values home, family, country and God. If I had to stand before a dozen terrorists who threaten my life, I'd choose a half dozen or so rednecks to back me up. Tire irons, squirrel guns and grit -- that's what rednecks are made of. I hope I am one of those. If you feel the same, pass this on to your redneck friends. Ya'll know who ya' are. You might be a redneck if: It never occurred to you to be offended by the phrase, 'One nation, under God' You might be a redneck if: You've never protested about seeing the 10 Commandments posted in public places. You might be a redneck if: You still say ' Christmas' instead of 'Winter Festival.' You might be a redneck if: You bow your head when someone prays. You might be a redneck if: You stand and place your hand over your heart when they play the National Anthem. You might be a redneck if: You treat our armed forces veterans with great respect, and always have. You might be a redneck if: You've never burned an American flag, nor intend to. You might be a redneck if: You know what you believe and you aren't afraid to say so, no matter who is listening. You might be a redneck if: You respect your elders and raised your kids to do the same. You might be a redneck if: You'd give your last dollar to a friend.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:52 PM) Bravo on the last point. I basically agree with you, but I do not have a good solution nor have I ever heard one. We have so many law suits because we have so many rights and protections. We have a system where if a company ignores a problem, they get hit, and hit hard. We have a system where if you give shoddy treatment, you get sued. There certainly are abuses, but they come in the suits that are brought and lost, but even then restricting people's right to be heard in court is a precious right we really should not curtail.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) I don't think I ever heard of this guy. If I did, it didn't stick in my memory. I don't have any memories of him playing, but after dredging up some memories, it was more along the lines of his name coming up when some young player posted a good season or two and everyone anointed him the next . Sadly today a similar stat line, especially if he debuted in say 2002, there would be cries of steroids.

Top 10 Hotheads
QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 01:44 PM) I hated AJ as a Twin. I love him as a White Sox. He's one of those guys that you hate unless he's one your team. The best example of another athlete that I can come up with is Dino Cicarelli who used to play for the Minnesota North Stars. I hated the guy, but I would have loved him if he was on the Blackhawks. Great example. I was at a game where the Stars refused to take the ice until all the anti-Dino stuff was taken down. But I still could not stomach the Bulls signing Rodman.

Top 10 Hotheads
Not so surprisingly I love catching for that reason, getting into the other team's heads. AJ is about as good as anyone at that, and you have to be thinking and even tempered to do it or else it backfires and they just owned space in your head.

Favre to the Jets
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:07 PM) But...Favre is also in NY because he was unable to adapt and make a decision based on anyone else's schedule but his own. The last decision was by the Packers. On Wednesday, they could have had a HoF QB on their roster who knows their system. They chose no. They had many reasons to chose from, hopefully they made it based on the needs of their football team, but I doubt it. IMHO it was a decision they made based on ego, pride, and macho.

All-Time Greatest White Sox?
QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 01:08 PM) Here's the way I look at Baines issue. Andre Dawson was a better all around player than Harold and he's not in yet. Dawson didn't have the DH position to fall back on. He won an MVP award while playing for a last place team. He also had the turf issue in Montreal as a factor in his knees deteriorating. If Dawson makes it, and I think he should, then I'll take another look at Harold. But Andre was just a better all around ballplayer than Harold, imho. Nothing there but truth.

All-Time Greatest White Sox?
QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 11:58 AM) How has Harold done in the voting? I think that would be the thing that tells the story? He'll be off the ballot in a year or two. Barely pulling in the 5% necessary. I think being a DH hurts more than his career numbers. Again, my only disagreement is the comments that he is not even close. I think he is pretty damn close.

Favre to the Jets
The Packers suddenly had a HoF caliber QB who intimately knows the organization available to them. Does not matter how or why. The guy is there and available. At that point the Packers also had an opportunity to make a new decision. They stuck with their earlier decision. They chose the path and may regret it. It certainly was a big PR gamble. From the coverage I saw, I think the Packer front office made decisions based on playing "who's dick is bigger" not on what was best on the field. Bottom line Favre is in NY because of the Packers. They controlled where he played this season.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 11:53 AM) Here's a short little Gary Peters story for you. He was with Red Sox and was getting roughed up one day. This rookie catcher comes out to mound to talk to him and Peters, being the veteran pitcher that he was at the time said "WTF do you want?" At that point Carlton Fisk just turned around and walked back to his position. great story.
