QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 02:04 PM) A newspaper without Editors and editing is an on line forum like this where anyone can print just about anything. At newspapers decisions are made every day on what is included and what is not, there is not unlimited space. Is it news when it is the same stump speech that has been given for 12 months?

I don't want them to win them all in Minny, always just the next one . . .

QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 08:35 AM) I read them sometimes, think of a few expletive deleteds to send out into the planetary conscienceness toward the poster and then move on. I keep remembering when we should have tossed in the towel in February and built for the future. Kenny Dubya was suppose to trade everyone with some trade value and try to win in a couple years. Seems the Cleveland Indians had the division sewn up, followed closely by the Tigers. We were fourth at best. That may well be how we finish, but thank God we tried to win with these guys. Makes for a great baseball season.

QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 09:41 AM) How dare you post this kinda propaganda at this site. You should be banned for this kinda behavior.Iam going to alert the admin's and mods. His warning level was already adjusted -10%, but then we added back in +20% for getting banned at WSI for something so silly as to not be believed.

I was just on South Padre Island and comparing notes with friends and suppliers and one company kept being brought up, the H-E-B Grocery Stores. They came down with their emergency response team of several trailer loads of ice, meals, bottled water, and a large tanker or two of potable water. They really made a tangible difference for a lot of the people living in Dolly's path. They could have made a lot of money selling ice and water, instead they handed it out with words of encouragement. They also had the National Guard helping to distribute their supplies. Of course we also saw the Red Cross and Salvation Army. There really are only two choices in grocery stores in this neck of the woods, and honestly I was already a fan and rarely used the other one. Now, there are even more reasons to shop at H-E-B. I do not wish to disparage the other company who runs ads all across the nation telling how nice life is when they move into your neighborhood. However, I did not see any obvious signs that it was anything more than normal at their store. People are helping each other and amazing how well people can drive when common courtesy replaces traffic signals. Makes me proud to be a human, an American, and a Texan. Not so amazing is how fast the language barriers drop when people need help. A smile and a hand shake go a very long way.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 09:34 AM) Yup. I wanted them to know who I was to thank everyone for attending the softball game. I wasn't even trying to hide. I need a screen shot of Southsider2k5 with 2 posts

Back in 2005 when the sky was falling, they got pissed at a couple posters who kept predicting the Sox would not make the playoffs. They cut a deal that if the posters were wrong and the Sox did make the playoffs, their accounts would be suspended. I posted that was a stupid idea and George had it backwards, that if they were right and the team missed the playoffs, who would want those posters around saying they were right, rubbing everyone's nose into it, all the while the Sox season went to hell. Their account whould be suspended if they were right and if there where wrong they should have to log on and have everyone point out how wrong they were. Someone even posted right afterwards I'd be suspended or banned. But I believe I still have posting privileges there. I forgot my password. That place just seems too boring most of the time. Too much like a fern bar with guys in suits after work having a gin and tonic and bracing for the train ride home to hell. Of course the other place seems like the day care center. I'll stay here with the crazies.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 09:25 AM) And I get the reputation for being a hardass. I am a AAAA admin compared to those guys. Did you use this screen name? When I'm lurking I always change mine. Which can be fun. I remember someone here who always disagreed with me, who agreed with me there. My post was almost word for word the same.

NSS, About about people you know and have a personal link? What can they do to influence your vote?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 09:20 AM) The funny part is they told me to join after the softball game. Oh well. Ah, the old join so we can wack you game

^^^^ proof that Obama isn't getting off. Seems like both candidates are taking their share of hits, and of applause.

I was just thinking about how someone can influence your vote. The types of people you actually will listen to. For me it is guys like the former Republican Chair for Hidalgo County. Even though we disagreed on 75% of the issues, he admitted when he thought his party had the weaker hand, and didn't gloat when they had the upper hand. He taught me that all politics are the same. The business side works by the same rules. He had credibility with me because he kept to the major stuff, never tried to make some mountain out of a mole hill. Was never a "sky is falling" alarmist or an apologist and excuse maker. He would apply the same standards to everyone regardless of party. He was rarely embarrassed for making an error in judgment, perhaps that is why he is a judge today. On the other end of the line are the fanatics that can be so aggravating I hope their candidate loses just to shut them up, even if I naturally would support that candidate. Or, if their candidate is elected, I hope he fails, again, just to shut up the kool aid drinking, see no wrong, supporter.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 08:53 AM) That's the best part, I have no idea why. I posted the same article about national city failing and then the next time I went back to click something I got the message with a generic message directing me towards TOS. Man the answer to the national debt is WSI. They are so tight, just insert some coal and they will have diamonds coming out in no time. Do you think they figured out it is you?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 07:36 AM) This case would be a perfect example. If they tried to prosecute the guy from the park, Condit would be their reasonable doubt. It wouldn't even be close with a jury. Unless the guy confessed, he would get off. And it shows how the media controls cases. If Condit was the guy, the media would be heroes for keeping the pressure on the police on behave of the family and Levy. If he's not, they are goats for distracting the police and forcing them to check false leads and theories.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 08:48 AM) I got banned at WSI in my second post. True story. I thought I was going to be banned in 2005 for telling George he was wrong, but I survived. I haven't been back in a couple years.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 08:04 PM) Obviously you have never had a parent suffer a permanent working disability who got turned down for social security even though he fit the very definition of someone who should get benefits. It took 5 years and a lawyer who took 1/3 of the back benefits for someone who couldn't work at all to get what he deserved, because the government rejected his initial claim. No social security does not work. In general, and not specific to this case because there is not enough information. I thought tightening up requirements and being more careful in allowing benefits, was something that we demanded the SS Admin to do? Insurance companies are fighting fraudulent claims all the time. By this definition, if they deny a good claim, private insurance isn't working either. I'm not certain where a gold standard should be for "working" and claim adjusting, but I am fairly certain the number is lower then 100% being correct the first time. Some will be upheld on appeal, and some will be denied. But I belief, unless I am missing something, that the system would still be working.

Like in any other game, both sides use the same playbook. One candidate may be more run-centric, another may perfer the forward pass, but they all are playing the same game with the same rules. You have to have a lot of very powerful fans to be President. You cannot be afraid to get dirty. The great example of Presidents in our lifetime certainly spent some time chatting with Iranians while campaigning. It gets dirty.

i am checking to see hoe feasible it is to post via my cell phone. navigating is tough on the small screen, knowing where things are helps, but this is not very good.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 02:27 PM) I think he would have known at least a base argument for or against. Enough to say, "this is very basic, but..." then later on give more detail after he had a chance to research it. By the way, to this date, several weeks later, I have never heard if McCain ever got back to that reporter. He never answered it. I can tell you right now that I believe birth control should be covered. I dont need to look back at my "voting record" to say that. So as President you wouldn't even bother to know the other side of the argument? Wow. And since *you* never heard an answer McCain never got back to the reporter? nice stretch.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 10:23 AM) It's not that he didnt know which bills he's voted for or against. I understand that you cant POSSIBLY remember everything about every bill. BUT, my argument is that he didnt know where he stood on the issue! You could see his head turning trying to not get caught. Are you suggesting that Obama would have made a snap decision based on the question "viagra is covered, so should contraception also be?" Because, personally, I'd want a President that understands the ramifications and issues before making a decision. Read your response, "he can't possibly remember everything about every bill", yet you expect him to make a decision without remembering everything about the bill? You will discover that as a Senator, and certainly as a President, there are very few simple decisions. If they were simple, they would have been made long before they reach this level. McCain, and Obama, are smart enough to know that, and smart enough to not articulate a policy position without all the facts.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 01:30 PM) whoa, social security is the gold standard for a government program that is working? ouch. i hope you aren't depending on that for retirement, the money is going to be gone when we are old. and G W has increased government spending, he's a hack Imagine an America with starving old people living in the streets. If you can imagine that happening, then you can imagine not saving social security. If it comes down to saving, for example, The Iraqi people from or feeding our senior citizens, which do you think the politicians will opt for? Still, I agree, retirement would be much nicer with a nest egg of your own, but to believe America will allow millions and millions of senior citizens to die in the streets, ain't going to happen.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 08:17 PM) This may be one of the most awkward moments in political history... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q8obHEULLg&hl=en&fs=1 I can almost see his mind turning and thinking "oh god. how have I voted? i dont know where i stand!" UPDATE: Ed Rollins (a Republican Strategist) said that video is the most uncomfortable video he's ever seen in his 40 years in politics. I know I'm pulling up an old post here, but I was thinking this morning about everything a campaign needs to keep straight, everything a candidate has to remember. And I thought of this. How many items does a Senator vote on? And, something like this was probably tacked onto a larger bill, with mutiple items. The devil may be in the details, but let us give each candidate a fair look. When there are small slips of the tongue, or minor gaffs, let's not try and turn it into something way out of scale. Isn't the office of President at least importanr enough to not turn it into a trivia game? Seriously, did anyone here know there was even a vote on this?
