  1. ^^^^ proof that Obama isn't getting off. Seems like both candidates are taking their share of hits, and of applause.
  2. I was just thinking about how someone can influence your vote. The types of people you actually will listen to. For me it is guys like the former Republican Chair for Hidalgo County. Even though we disagreed on 75% of the issues, he admitted when he thought his party had the weaker hand, and didn't gloat when they had the upper hand. He taught me that all politics are the same. The business side works by the same rules. He had credibility with me because he kept to the major stuff, never tried to make some mountain out of a mole hill. Was never a "sky is falling" alarmist or an apologist and excuse maker. He would apply the same standards to everyone regardless of party. He was rarely embarrassed for making an error in judgment, perhaps that is why he is a judge today. On the other end of the line are the fanatics that can be so aggravating I hope their candidate loses just to shut them up, even if I naturally would support that candidate. Or, if their candidate is elected, I hope he fails, again, just to shut up the kool aid drinking, see no wrong, supporter.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 08:53 AM) That's the best part, I have no idea why. I posted the same article about national city failing and then the next time I went back to click something I got the message with a generic message directing me towards TOS. Man the answer to the national debt is WSI. They are so tight, just insert some coal and they will have diamonds coming out in no time. Do you think they figured out it is you?
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 07:36 AM) This case would be a perfect example. If they tried to prosecute the guy from the park, Condit would be their reasonable doubt. It wouldn't even be close with a jury. Unless the guy confessed, he would get off. And it shows how the media controls cases. If Condit was the guy, the media would be heroes for keeping the pressure on the police on behave of the family and Levy. If he's not, they are goats for distracting the police and forcing them to check false leads and theories.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 08:48 AM) I got banned at WSI in my second post. True story. I thought I was going to be banned in 2005 for telling George he was wrong, but I survived. I haven't been back in a couple years.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 08:04 PM) Obviously you have never had a parent suffer a permanent working disability who got turned down for social security even though he fit the very definition of someone who should get benefits. It took 5 years and a lawyer who took 1/3 of the back benefits for someone who couldn't work at all to get what he deserved, because the government rejected his initial claim. No social security does not work. In general, and not specific to this case because there is not enough information. I thought tightening up requirements and being more careful in allowing benefits, was something that we demanded the SS Admin to do? Insurance companies are fighting fraudulent claims all the time. By this definition, if they deny a good claim, private insurance isn't working either. I'm not certain where a gold standard should be for "working" and claim adjusting, but I am fairly certain the number is lower then 100% being correct the first time. Some will be upheld on appeal, and some will be denied. But I belief, unless I am missing something, that the system would still be working.
  7. Like in any other game, both sides use the same playbook. One candidate may be more run-centric, another may perfer the forward pass, but they all are playing the same game with the same rules. You have to have a lot of very powerful fans to be President. You cannot be afraid to get dirty. The great example of Presidents in our lifetime certainly spent some time chatting with Iranians while campaigning. It gets dirty.
  8. i am checking to see hoe feasible it is to post via my cell phone. navigating is tough on the small screen, knowing where things are helps, but this is not very good.
  9. For a little background on this check out http://www.newsweek.com/id/148543 which I believe is a fairly reputable source.
  10. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 02:27 PM) I think he would have known at least a base argument for or against. Enough to say, "this is very basic, but..." then later on give more detail after he had a chance to research it. By the way, to this date, several weeks later, I have never heard if McCain ever got back to that reporter. He never answered it. I can tell you right now that I believe birth control should be covered. I dont need to look back at my "voting record" to say that. So as President you wouldn't even bother to know the other side of the argument? Wow. And since *you* never heard an answer McCain never got back to the reporter? nice stretch.
  11. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 10:23 AM) It's not that he didnt know which bills he's voted for or against. I understand that you cant POSSIBLY remember everything about every bill. BUT, my argument is that he didnt know where he stood on the issue! You could see his head turning trying to not get caught. Are you suggesting that Obama would have made a snap decision based on the question "viagra is covered, so should contraception also be?" Because, personally, I'd want a President that understands the ramifications and issues before making a decision. Read your response, "he can't possibly remember everything about every bill", yet you expect him to make a decision without remembering everything about the bill? You will discover that as a Senator, and certainly as a President, there are very few simple decisions. If they were simple, they would have been made long before they reach this level. McCain, and Obama, are smart enough to know that, and smart enough to not articulate a policy position without all the facts.
  12. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 01:30 PM) whoa, social security is the gold standard for a government program that is working? ouch. i hope you aren't depending on that for retirement, the money is going to be gone when we are old. and G W has increased government spending, he's a hack Imagine an America with starving old people living in the streets. If you can imagine that happening, then you can imagine not saving social security. If it comes down to saving, for example, The Iraqi people from or feeding our senior citizens, which do you think the politicians will opt for? Still, I agree, retirement would be much nicer with a nest egg of your own, but to believe America will allow millions and millions of senior citizens to die in the streets, ain't going to happen.
  13. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 08:17 PM) This may be one of the most awkward moments in political history... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q8obHEULLg&hl=en&fs=1 I can almost see his mind turning and thinking "oh god. how have I voted? i dont know where i stand!" UPDATE: Ed Rollins (a Republican Strategist) said that video is the most uncomfortable video he's ever seen in his 40 years in politics. I know I'm pulling up an old post here, but I was thinking this morning about everything a campaign needs to keep straight, everything a candidate has to remember. And I thought of this. How many items does a Senator vote on? And, something like this was probably tacked onto a larger bill, with mutiple items. The devil may be in the details, but let us give each candidate a fair look. When there are small slips of the tongue, or minor gaffs, let's not try and turn it into something way out of scale. Isn't the office of President at least importanr enough to not turn it into a trivia game? Seriously, did anyone here know there was even a vote on this?
  14. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 03:46 AM) I dare someone to find a better place than Carbondale. Not gonna happen. If you like crowds of college students . . .
  15. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 08:22 AM) Then again, the intensity and the quantity of negative posts around here are worse than worthless. They are a detriment to enjoyment of the season, the team and this site. Only if you read them buddy, only if you read them.
  16. The stat proves we are a slow team who gets on base at a fairly decent clip. If a team won all its games by 10 runs, someone would point out that the entire staff has zero saves. All stats need context.
  17. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 10:46 PM) It's too early for the Tiger's funeral dirge to be played. I remember having a much bigger lead a couple of Julys ago and that evaporated to almost nothing.
  18. All those things were mistakes, no doubt. Sad how close they probably were to nailing the guy.
  19. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 03:07 PM) Whoa, bring it down a little Tex. I just found it quite funny that of all the crappy countries to pick from, he picked that one. And Georgie and friends did what, sang for an hour or two? John and wife (and perhaps a nanny or two? I don't know.) raised a kid. just kidding you. It's all good.
  20. QUOTE (Balance @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 11:10 AM) I just moved to Naperville. So, great! I guess we know where it will rank next year
  21. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 08:41 AM) From Obama's Berlin speech: Um, Obama? Mccain already did that bolded part, in 1991. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1209516068...emEditorialPage Um, McCain? George Harrison and friends already did that bolded part, in 1971. http://www.theconcertforbangladesh.com/ So Bangladesh is off limits for politicians looking to help some poor kids, McCain called it first, go find some other poor children, God knows our planet has enough of them.
  22. Wow. Just to make it easier for you lazy soxtalkers . . .
  23. QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 02:59 AM) Wait a minute, on your last day where? At work, or do you have a gun in your mouth? He's just happy to see you . . . I think this has something to do with Alex's "Last Day as Banker" thread. Which is also appearing today in SLAM Unless go to Cuba and witness to Cubans was the last thing to do on his life list.
  24. For some reason I have this Jan and Dean song running though my head . . . And we're goin' to Surf City, 'cause it's two to one You know we're goin' to Surf City, gonna have some fun Ya, we're goin' to Surf City, 'cause it's two to one You know we're goin' to Surf City, gonna have some fun, now Two girls for every boy
  25. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 25, 2008 -> 03:57 PM) If you want to play in the bigs you don't go down to the minors to pout or be bored. You perform. Josh really hasn't performed well and I believe he was hurt for awhile also. If Joe is hurt than Fields is our only real option and if he doesn't respond like we need him to than maybe last season was a fluke? ^^^^^ All he had to do is talk to Brian Anderson and he would understand about playing hard every out, no matter where you are assigned.
