  1. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 6, 2010 -> 06:57 PM) You made a ridiculous claim that some would take 6 cheap years of Hudson over the best pitcher of the last 10 years. I don't get what's so hard to understand. Does baseball have a cap? No. But every team not named the Yankees, and to a lesser degree the Cubs, Red Sox and Mets, have a budget. A budget that they HAVE to stick to. We've got over 50+ million committed to next year's rotation on a team with a 100 million dollar payroll, give or take a few million. Throw in Rios, who's overpaid, and you're talking 66 million to all of 6 players. Throw in arbitration raises to Danks, CQ and Jenks (Jenks better not be back), and that number gets higher. As of right now, we've got no 1B, C and DH. And no ready replacements in our pathetic system. It made no sense to trade our top pitching prospect, a guy that dominated the minors for over a year and a half, for a guy that's been nothing but mediocre outside of 1 half in 2009, that's due almost 9 million next year and set to become a FA and has an agent we refuse to deal with. It's not about overrating Hudson and thinking he's the next Lincecum. But you have to be able to filter some cheap/controllable talent onto your roster every now and then (again, unless you're the Yankees). Kenny has become his own worst enemy. I find it funny that posters who look at Hudson and point out the risk of a prospect succeeding but then they avoid the fact that Jackson had sucked throughout his career, at every stop he was BAD for an extended period of time and there is absolutely no guarantee that he was more of a safe bet than Hudson.
  2. Russell Martin interests me as a FA if he is non-tendered. Haven't seen him play in a few years but his value has plummeted and he brings about as much as AJ does to the table (pretty equal WAR) and has the potential to be alot better while being younger. If anyone has actually seen him or knows whats up with his half-freefall recently would be glad to get an update. He also has the same first name as me so he has that going for him
  3. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Oct 3, 2010 -> 09:07 PM) Thanks! Yes, I have been with GE for the last 10 months (full time internship from Dec-Aug, and then part-time once school started again). I'm looking at staying with them, but I'm trying to explore all options. You started that thread last year about internships/jobs... maybe I should start another. Yea it's about that time of year where interviews are taking place for internships/full-time positions for college students. That thread was pretty successful last year and from what I could tell from the Soxtalk age poll there should be alot of us going for jobs again this year.
  4. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 4, 2010 -> 12:04 AM) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_AoZsp4_xw...player_embedded Kids admit that they getting class credit to go to the One Nation rally. I guess they had to bribe some people to go. Or give them free bus rides vie the SEIU. Um..what? I didn't hear anything about class hours, I heard they were getting volunteer hours for Key Club, which is a national club focused on volunteering. And also, most of the those kids said that they were interested in being there.
  5. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Oct 5, 2010 -> 04:47 PM) I saw nothing to suggest in the AL, Hudson would be anything like he was in the NL Worst. In the AL, he is nothing more than a 4.50 ERA guy. Jackson is a better pitcher, IMO. But I will give you that his salary would be a nice thing on the roster, but Hudson pitched in a horrible offensive division with no pressure. Hahn is more of that, but he also will take more statistical research into personnel decisions than KW. Once again, so did Jackson and put up terrible numbers. Almost all the distaste from that trade is not that Jackson wasn't a nice guy to pickup, it's that Hudson was a key part to the Sox future. Having that cheap, but effective pitcher for years at the back of your rotation is exactly what the Sox need right now and for the near future with this expensive pitching staff. Plus, Hudson has shown some great peripherals throughout the minors and with the D'Backs, he could've been a solid #3 guy for years at a cheap price. Jackson was a good pick up in my opinion, he just wasn't worth Hudson and combine the fact that we really needed Hudson to balance out the pitching staff in terms of salary without giving up any production and that trade makes little financial or baseball sense.

    Just please no Dane Cook.
  7. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Oct 3, 2010 -> 09:15 PM) But we drafted Chris Williams!! A guy who many teams took of their boards completely because of his neck issues. He had potential, so I don't mind that pick too much, obviously they cant scout well at all at OL, but I did say "didn't commit enough" because one 1st round pick and some crappy 6th round picks isn't enough to revamp an OL.
  8. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Oct 3, 2010 -> 09:12 PM) Concussion...for Cutler f*** you Bears FO. Really, WTF where they thinking these past 3-4 years without developing OL? Everyone kept clamoring for them to draft and develop more, but they just flat out wouldn't commit to it enough.
  9. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 12:00 PM) My concern is our 2nd half swoons that we always seem to have. Even in 2005 our intensity seemed to drop. I don't know if it's conditioning, Ozzie, the players, or what but I don't think we can afford a lackluster 2nd half with our offensive holes. I hate you.
  10. Phillies, I admire how that franchise has been run for the past few years. They make some questionable moves (extension to Howard and Moyer make me scratch my head) but I love how they trade for and develop talent.
  11. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 06:03 PM) I interviewed with 4 companies this week for a full-time job in a Logistics/Supply Chain role after I graduate: ExxonMobile Cummins Whirlpool Chep Does anyone have any advice on working for these companies? Obviously, Exxon would be amazing, but it's also incredibly competitive so we'll see. I'm going up against MBA students for that job, so I don't think it's likely. Regardless, getting past the screening process and receiving an interview alone makes me happy. Congrats! Weren't you with GE earlier or am I confusing posters again. Also, I can give a reference for you to a company that I interned for last summer and will be back again to this summer that is recognized as a very good place for supply chain if you want, PM me if interested (it's in the north suburbs of Chicago just fyi). And good luck with interviews!
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 3, 2010 -> 03:02 PM) Ozzie would love to have Vizquel back in 2011 Not surprised or mad about it at all, I just don't want to depend on him to be a starter again.
  13. Lillibridge given a second opportunity, then goes down lookin.

I love barndances and girls who know how to pull off that country look.
  15. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 02:57 PM) But would Mets, Dodger, Cards, Cubs etc want him on the team? Not to sure in what the Mets could offer for MB, but I could see them being interested. I could also see them taking on Linebrink and half his contract for next year.
  16. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 12:27 PM) I'm skeptical about how "good" of a return we could get on MB to be honest. I kind of feel he's more valuable to us than what we could expect back. MB is just not worth $14 million a year, so getting rid of that contract and spending that money more wisely is pretty valuable to the Sox.
  17. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 08:57 AM) The Sox courting a big free agent, only to have him sign somewhere else for more money? I don't believe it. Haha yea it just seems so Sox like for them to target a big name player that they've loved for years then lose out to another team in FA after banking on signing that guy. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 10:24 AM) The Sox are paying Juan Pierre $3M in 2010, and $5M in 2011, as long as he has a touch better season next year I wouldn't conisder this overpaid. I realize he has a huge contract but the Dodgers are paying for most of it. $5 million might not be a whole lot for a starting OF, but I just hate his style of game and unless he was playing for under $1 million then I think he is more detrimental to the team then good. But thats my opinion, and I know alot of people can claim he's a decent leadoff man (I have different ideals what a good leadoff man entails) but he does play pretty good D, I do give him that.
  18. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 01:20 PM) I certainly don't think Linebrink is a lock to be on the team next year. He only has one year left (I believe) on his contract, so I'm sure someone would be willing to take a chance on him. If we ate $3 mill or so we may be able to dump him back onto a NL team who thinks he could be a decent 7th inning guy.
  19. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 12:51 PM) If no one is unloaded to make room for Konerko and they still sign Konerko, the DH position will definitely take a hit. I could see Quentin as the DH if that were to happen. Then your down an OF, and barring a creative move you'll be stuck with the likes of De Aza, Jones, Teahen, etc getting significant time there.
  20. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 30, 2010 -> 01:01 AM) I could see Crawford getting a 7/$120 (or maybe more) deal this offseason. I don't think that's in the cards for the White Sox. If they signed him, I obviously wouldn't be upset because I think Crawford will become a better and more powerful hitter as he gets a bit older. If they did that, it would also be at the expense of Pierre. I believe in the past Crawford says that he prefers playing LF (and since he's signing somewhere, he's going to get his wish or you will have a disgruntled player), and you obviously can't put Pierre in CF, since Rios is better, or RF, and he's making way too much money to be a bench player, and he is good enough that someone would trade for him. I just want to point out that the only moves Williams really made during this past offseason to add to the everyday lineup was trading for Mark Teahen and Juan Pierre. He acquired Rios and Peavy during the year, but we are talking exclusively the offseason. Williams is going to have to aim a bit higher if he wants to make any type of changes to the lineup. I agree that Pierre would have to go, but then again I hate his style of play so I would love that. I doubt the Sox actually get Crawford, but my guess is that they will court him heavily this offseason.
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 11:04 PM) I actually think you will see the Sox look to retain a few more than that, because it will take an enormous amount of creativity to put together a contender while losing so many guys, and the Sox almost have to try and win next year. Attempt to retain Konerko, but he may have priced himself out Re-sign AJ to 1 year deal with an option Look into keeping Jones because he is pretty much a perfect 4th outfielder Kotsay is gone Quentin will atleast be tendered a contract. I don't believe you are going to find a player of Quentin's potential for a similar price on the open market, and thus, I think he will be kept. They'll look into keeping Putz, but I agree that he's gone There is no doubt Jenks is non-tendered, but I could see the Sox resigning him to a much lesser deal. Pena is tricky, because he's been terrible, but he's still going to be pretty cheap and he's got a good arm. I think he's back. I agree that Garcia is gone, unless he wants to come back on a very similar deal. I think he can get $5 mill, and the Sox can't afford that. It's possible a starter could be dealt, but I see it happening only in the perfect scenario. Money definitely needs to be freed up, but I don't know how they will go about it exactly My prediction for the opening day lineup Pierre - LF Beckham - 2B Rios - CF Konerko - 1B Quentin - DH Pierzynski - C Ramirez - SS Teahen - RF Morel - 3B I wouldnt be surprised at all to see the Sox go in a different direction at catcher. I think Quentin is traded for a decent prospect, but one that probably is 2-3 years away still. I see the Sox trying to shed salary big time and then going after some marquee players like Crawford. I just have a feeling about that. Losing Konerko but gaining Crawford would be a positive still in terms of PR, and I think they would move Quentin(no idea on his defense there though, just trying to be creative)/Teahen/Flowers/Viciedo there or find a cheap replacement externally. One starter will be traded, for a decent players to fill voids and to give flexibility in the payroll.

QUOTE (The Bones @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 08:35 PM) "Come on!" "Stop saying that." I thought the second episode showed some promise. It's not great but it's certainly not one of the worst shows ever put together. I don't the girl as a narrator but it's an okay show. Had a few laughs but it's just not AD which really is what I think of when I see will arnett.
  23. QUOTE (buckweaver @ Sep 29, 2010 -> 05:44 PM) Haven't yet seen it mentioned...but perhaps he announced this at week's start because an extension has been agreed on in principal and all involved said they needed until Thursday to get all the lawyers' approvals, etc. What a great start to the off-season that would be with four games left to go this year. I can't believe Konerko could be allowed to leave after all's he's meant to this organization, his numbers this year, and the ease with which the organization could drop $3M on Manny for, really, 12 singles over two weeks in games that meant anything at all. I really think it'd be hard for Kenny to justify letting the captain walk when 2-3 years at $10M/year(ish) would probably get it done and allow the classiest White Sox player since Harold Baines finish his career where he should. $30 million is quite different from $3.5 million. Ramirez was brought in as a last hope to make the playoffs, konerko would be signed as a keystone piece for the next 3 years. It is up to the Sox to figure out if they believe Konerko can repeat his success and stay healthy, while also figuring out if a replacement level player could come in for him and that the money would be better spent elsewhere (RF, DH, Bullpen, etc).
