  1. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 06:59 PM) I'm s***ting my pants in anticipation of the U of I notification day. December 14th. Ahhhhhh QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 11:18 PM) I'm going into Business, which I'm really iffy for for UofI. So needless to say, I'm very nervous about getting in. I f I do though, I'm pretty sure I'm going there with an outside chance of Loyola. Wow, I am totally in that situation also. I really hope I get into the Business school, and good luck to you both. Hopefully all three of us get in (plus whoever else is applying from this site!) I must say its a relief to hear back from schools so that you atleast know where you can go

QUOTE(farmteam @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 05:35 PM) I just went through this last year, so I'll see what I can help with. First off, you're looking for a good business program in the midwest, but you didn't consider Indiana? I'm offended (Not really, but considering it is usually considered the second best business school [most publications I read rank them as 1. Michigan 2. IU 3. Illinois and Wisconsin, but there's not much separation, so don't get too angry at me, Illini and Badger fans] in the Big Ten, and one of the best in the nation [11th overall in 2007)]). Since I can't comment on any of the specific schools on your list (All I can say is the couple times I went to Illinois I liked the feel of their campus, and I know people who love it there), I'll talk about your more general points. On going to a big school: I came from a very large high school, and I knew I wanted to go to a big school. A family member went to a very small school in the middle of nowhere, and while they liked it, I wouldn't be able to stand it. A big school has more to offer in terms of brand recognition -- I can turn on ESPN and see Hoosier highlights, but I wouldn't be able to do that if I went to a small school. I personally think a large college town is a great place, there's so much to do. As for class sizes and feeling small and what not, I wouldn't worry about it. Of all my classes this year, only my geology lab is taught by a TA -- everything else is taught by a professor. I don't mind the large lecture halls -- you get used to it, and you can always go to office hours, or a discussion section if your class has that, if you want something more intimate. And, anyway, you only have those your first year or two, after that the classes get smaller. I hope that answered some of your questions. In regards to not applying at Indiana, its just my prejudice, and thats all my fault as I just dont like the state very much (not the people Ive met from there, as one of my best friends lived there for awhile), just the experiences Ive had there, Ill leave it at that, its hard to explain. I could be happy in a small town atmosphere, but one thing I have noticed, even at the most populated hs in michigan, taht I wan to meet more people, so I feel that a large campus would be nice, plus like you mentioned the sports are a big deal to me.

QUOTE(Chombi @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 02:20 AM) What's your major for one, what sports do you like and your partying habits? Btw apply to Mizzou. Great School and campus is beautiful. The campus is what sold me. Decent and improving athletic department. Good party school and mostly everything there is brand new. Im looking into business, I am obsessed with baseball, not only with the White Sox, but playing it also. I play for my high school team, and have been contacted slightly for college ball at the D3 level so far. I plan to try and walk on wherever i go, and if I decide that I dont want to continue it, then I plan to study abroad. Partying wise, I actually love to do it, just when I have the time. So basically I love to have the oppurtunity to party, but I am also not going to do it constantly. Mizzou seems like a great school from what I hear from you guys, but these are the schools that I have applied to, and I am just looking for advice on these schools as it would be a really late response now if I applied to another school, with my high school taking forever to get my transcript out. I emailed Wisconsin and they basically said no scholarship for you. I plan on visiting these schools and hopefully one stands out during those trips (right now Illinois is my number 1, as I stated before I have been dreaming of going there but havent seen the campus in like 10 years)
  4. QUOTE(Jeremy @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 10:22 PM) I'm what you'd call a Kenny hater but I find it baffling that anyone would choose this moment to lose patience with him. He's made a number of questionable moves over the years IMO so I can't understand why the final straw would be failing to make a move that might not have even have been within his means. Completely gutting what's left of the farm system for a player who might cost $20+ million to resign in two years time doesn't seem like a slam dunk to me. The guy is a future HOF, who is only 24 years old, and would just abso. mash at the Cell, while our best prospect in DLS looks to have #1 stuff, but many scouts like him more as a bullpen arm, please give me Miggy over our whole system. Its too bad, if we couldve gotten him, we wouldve been able to retool in the draft with our high pick (and if we dropped the slot bonus bs)
  5. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 09:37 PM) Don't forget their E-1's... Living by Detroit I got the impression that Tiger fans tasted the sweet life of winning, and so did Illitch, and they will fight and spend to keep that going, as seen by today's trade. The Tiggys arent goin anywhere, especially the way they draft.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 09:21 PM) Yeah, the football team is 1 win away from being in another national championship game. Racism wise, I haven't seen or heard of anything like that since I've been here. There's some segregation, as in the black people hang out with black people and white people hang out with white people, but there is no animosity or anything from either group. I personally love it here. Meal plans are sweet, you're never far away from a cafeteria, the housing is new, we've got like 4 new building being built, and the campus is gorgeous. Good to hear, its just some rumors that ive heard that are nice to clear up. Everything that Ive heard about GVSU otherwise has been great, and I really like the idea of so many new buildings, seems like some top facilities are there now. Do you ever get to go west to the beaches at all? They try to sell that in their pamphlets, and I was wondering if they have good spots to go with adequate transportation to get their.

QUOTE(Felix @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 09:16 PM) Wisconsin sucks, go to Minnesota instead. Oh, and I also think MSU is also pretty bad. I went there for a visit on their big "green and white" day, and it just turned out to be a waste of time. They hardly put any effort at all into it compared to the other schools I visited. I wouldnt say Wisco sucks , but yes I ahve heard many good things about Minnesota also. MSU has many negatives, but also many positives. They are a great school, ranked I believe around #75 in the nation, and relatively easy to get in for what you get in return, plus is cheap compared to other schools. But they also accept many UMich rejects, and they really are that little brother. Not trying to be negative on it too much, because it offers a great education for kids who may not want to or cant get into UMich but dont/cant go out of state. I must say though that GVSU has really impressed me with their advancement in higher standards for students, its almost to the level of MSU. I think they may be so uncoordinated because it is a huge school, one of the largest in the country I believe

QUOTE(SnB @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 09:12 PM) yeah, my tuition has been increasing as well. I believe the "locking in" is false. Thats not what I have been told, this is coming from school officials and many websites (like collegeboard.com). They do have different costs for diff. schools, such as the engineering and business school cost more to attend, maybe thats a reason. Otherwise I am not sure why you dont have a locked rate...
  9. bigruss replied to bigruss's topic in SLaM
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 08:46 PM) How is it that much cheaper to go to MSU instead of Illinois while being an Illinois resident? Michigan schools are much cheaper than Illinois schools. Illinois is ranked as one of the most expensive public schools, but also locks in your tuition so that helps a little bit. My brother at UMich has had major increases in his overall tuition/room and board every year, going up from 19 thousand to atleast 23 thousand in two years. The state of Michigan is trying to really keep the bright students instate, with the drastic moving of good workers (much like my dad) leaving the state due to the Big 3 auto comps. and Pfizer(where my dad was at). Illinois goes up every year, but once youre there they lock you in, sicne just 3 years ago my friends sister enrolled and pays about 17,000 I believe. MSU really is a great value for what you get. UMich does cheap out on alot though, 13 meals per week is skimpy. Plus, Illinois out of state is like close to $40 K, unbelievable
  10. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 08:10 PM) Sox apologist? I see, because I'm not a bitter 40 something that makes me a Sox apologist. I just don't see the nice 5 year core in Detroit you see, but maybe we are looking at different rosters. Next 2 years or so will be very good for the Tigers Pudge- Going down, HARD, last year with the team SHeff- also looking at a dip, think Thome Maggs- Seems good for now, but hes due for a drop Polanco- seems to me that he is going to age very quickly in a year or two Jones- not that good to begin with, but servicable for next year Guillen- move to 1st very smart, and his bat just seems to get better, but we'll see in two years Renteria- move to AL will hurt him, plus FA after season right? Illitch has $$$$$$ though, but still look for a decline very soon T. Jones- last year with the Tigers, possibly half year as closer, will be replaced by ZUmaya ROgers- most likely last year with TIgers, and as a frontline starter Robertson- not that old, but I see him as a 5th starter who will demand a lot of money for inconsistent performance Thats alot of players that I see gone after 08, or in major decline. They are major players too, and will be hard to replace, but with Miggy in there with Granderson, they should still be competitive, plus they draft very well so they will replenish year after year. The biggest question I have with them is catcher, do they keep inge as catcher once Pudge is done? Unlikely, but that may be a blackhole for them in the future.
  11. QUOTE(max power @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 08:00 PM) That doesn't make sense. Carter won't see the bigs this year. If they keep Tony Clark for two years though then Carter has a chance to be ready, plus it might only take 4 mill to keep clark for those years.
  12. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 07:44 PM) Wow, with this deal, there are about 5 teams that are hands-down better than the Sox (two are in our own division). The Angels, Indians, Tigers, Yankees (especially with the possible acquisition of Santana), and Red Sox. We really should have started to rebuild when we had the chance. Or, you know, made some serious moves this offseason. Yeah, I like the serious move to the NL

QUOTE(SnB @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 06:37 PM) I'm a senior at U of I right now and I love it. The beginning of freshmen year is a little overwhelming, but if you just stay open and get involved in your dorm and stuff, you'll be fine. As said above, after the first couple years, you make your friends, move out of the dorms, get an apartment, and the lifestyle changes completely. I love the big school mentality. There's so many different things, people, etc. I'm an economics major and have taken a ton of business classes, PM me if you have any questions on that stuff. First question that pops into my head is it super competitive in the business school? I love competition, but I've heard stories at other schools students check out all the books at the library so that the other students cant get to them. I know it sounds rediculous, but its happened at schools like U Mich (major reason why I didnt apply, plus my bro goes there and I didnt like the school at all, just a weird feeling there). Second, how are the teachers? Im guessing you start with alot of assistants teaching classes, but in general are the teachers approachable? I know the school says they are, but as a student do you find this to be true? Third, is Urbana boring? I ahve heard that from a couple of people, but I dont believe that really, but would like to know from a recent student (the people I heard it from were grads from like forever ago, and a friend saying stuff he took from being in a rural area) QUOTE(bmags @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 06:44 PM) I guess I came from a big town but i really don't understand how a big campus would be overwhelming. Mizzou has like 22,000 people in it, but as a junior now it seems so small. My advice, go where you feel a connection to the campus, then your first year get involved in as much s*** as you can. Because time flies by so quickly, and by the time you are a junior you look back and have a bunch of "I Wish"'s when it's time to start making a resume for internships. Mizzou's pretty cheap out of state and we'd be welcome to have ya. I actually didnt consider Mizzou, mainly because of travel time. I will most likely be in the Deerfield area after high school baseball is over, and thats quite a haul. I want to go somewhere away, but thats a long drive. It does seem like a very nice school, and the tuition is very competitive, thanks for the heads up on that. I do appreciate the info that the school starts to feel smaller, I guess I felt that at a high school of about 3,000, but I wasnt sure if it would be like that on a larger scale. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 07:06 PM) Grand Valley State Our football team is kind of a big deal, albeit DIV II. Actually, the football team is quite good, and Ive heard that they would do pretty well in D1. Hows the racism stuff there? Ive heard of many complaints about GVSU having race problems in the past, have they cleared up? Im white, but I just dont really tolerate blind racism. Thanks everybody for the responses so far!
  14. If I was Kenny, I may be crying after this.
  15. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 06:21 PM) It could well be great for them winning another title. But it's certainly no guarantee like so many people here seem to think it is. Why is it that if the White Sox acquired D-Train for 1/2 of its farm system, we'd have people whining about how KW acquired a pitcher near FA who put up a >5 ERA last year in the weak NL, but this Tigers team is going to dominate with him!!! Its not so much Willis, I see him as a good #4 starter, with potential to be a #3, maybe in a career year he'll regain that #2 status. But they got MIGGY!! He'll add more offense to an offensive laden team. THat will jsut add to more wins. Plus they are very balanced on offense, tehy have a knack for scoring with 2 outs also, very impressive in my mind.
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 06:19 PM) We have no idea what really went on there. I'm not upset about this at all....the Tigers basically gave up the farm. Kudos to them. I give them major props to have the balls to do this trade, even though it is for a HOF player, its still gutsy to trade so much young talent. I just wish the SOx will ditch this ridiculous draft slot crap, and go get the best player available in the draft and rebuild for the future.
  17. QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 06:16 PM) Tigers - check Lions - swept the Bears check Red Wings - despite the 4-0 mark over the past 10 years an easy check feel free to add the NBA if one desires (i dont) ....... I cant wait to move away
  18. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 06:11 PM) I think it is, and the Tigers have a fine starting rotation. They have a very nice balance now with MCab and Granderson leading the way with the youngsters, giving the team a very strong core for the future. Their vets could implode, but I dont see all of them doing that. Their pitching is their biggest question, yet they still have Verlander, Bonderman, and once back Zumaya. Plus they could reload a bit with trading Inge. Gahhh, I hate living near Detroit now that the Tigers are good, and kickin' our arses.
  19. QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:55 PM) I can't imagine we could get this done...no way no how. I can't imagine other teams can't easily eclipsed what the Sox are offering. I'd ... if we could get Cabrera for Fields, Gio, and Floyd. Adding Danks in there instead of Floyd is tough to swallow, but probably still a worthy move. You dont even give up DLS there, thats a complete steal. Who has that pic. of the Cubs fans with the sayin "Gonna Happin'? Who ya Crappin'?" I think that fits for us here, its just to easy for other teams to outbid us, but I am not saying I wouldnt love this deal.
  20. I wonder how legit that article is. First he marks that Danks and Floyd are close in value, not directly but he says "and" one of them. Second, he misspells Gio with "Geo" and third, he calls Danks a right hander. Nothing huge with the last two, but makes me wonder how much knowledge this guy has of the SOx players, esp. if he think that Danks=Floyd, I mean c'mon, thats ridiculous.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) Without knowing your intended major, if you like big crowds or smaller groups, lifestyle, etc. any advice you get is probably not worth the time to read it. If you have specific questions or concerns, you could get some great information here. Your list includes some of the top Universities in the Midwest and any would be a great choice, and any could be a terrible choice, it depends on you. If that makes sense. If you haven't really decided on a major, and most people do not stick to the one you may be thinking right now, take out a college catalog and highlight every course you think you would like to take. The department with the most highlights will be your first major. Sorry, I should have stated that right away. My intended major is Business administration. I am a very open person, one who enjoys a small community and a large one, so basically I am open to either type of college. I think that I would prefer a larger college though, still close to 50/50. I was really just trying to get opinions from people who may have attended or attend the universities stated, as some have had great experiences while others may not have. I know that I may be very different from these people, but all advice is appreciated on this end. I guess some of my main concerns would be do you feel lost in a large campus, or do you get bored in a smaller one or in a more rural one?

Hey guys, I know that I started a thread a couple of months ago on college search help. Now that I have received some letters back I would like to shift my focus to another agenda, money and the final decision. So far my colleges look like this: Wisconsin Madison- $32,000 Bradley- $34,000 - $8,500 schol. = $25,500 Carthage- $32,000 - $10,000 schol. = $22,000 Illinois State- $16,000 Grand Valley State- $14,000 Southern Illinois- $16,000 Dominican University- $29,500 - $14,000 schol. = $15,500 (Plus I have been contacted by the Head Baseball Coach to set up an interview for playing there) Colleges I am waiting on: U of Illinois Urbana- $25,000 Michigan State U. - $16,000 Just to inform you, I will be able to enroll as either an Illinois or Michigan resident as my dad currently lives in Deerfield, Illinois for work while I finish school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I will not qualify for much and most likely no need based scholarships, so I really need help with school like Wisc./Bradley/ and even Illinois. I have about $20,000 a year from my parents (which I am very fortunate for) and would like to spend out of my own pockets less than $3,000 a year (I am flexible on that, just I would like to keep the loans down). If anybody knows of a good scholarship source, please let me know!! Also, I will take any comments on the schools listed above, and the schol. listed are ones that I received for academic purposes. My current favs. are 1) Illinois (by far, always dreamed of going there) 2) Wisco 3) Bradley 4) Mich State 5)Carthage 6)DOminican and the rest are a blur right now Thanks for the input. Yay! New ACT score brings up higher scholarship for Bradley!! My new score kicks ass compared to my old one!!
  23. QUOTE(rowand's rowdies @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 04:30 PM) (2) Rauch for Uribe + Cash? Saw that the Nats are looking to use Rauch to get a shortstop. They went after Guzman a few years back after his time in MIN, and he is very similiar to Uribe. Might help or hurt. We would have to throw in a prospect (or Sisco, Aardsma, or MacDougal) and some $, but he would help the bullpen or the starting rotation. I always liked him. Rauch aint coming back
  24. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 03:15 PM) What do the Sox have that Toronto would even be interested in? Uribe
  25. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 08:45 PM) We should add this guy It justs drives me crazy that we are in need for so much bullpen depth while we waste space on gonzalez, atleast trade away aardsma or masset in time to make room for him. AHHHH, this time seriously drives me crazy because I want it to succeed so bad, and giving up on a guy like this just seems so stupid. "An innings eater" ??? sounds like exactly what we need, plus he has moxie? I would so much rather have that with his stuff than a scared s***less aardsma out on the mound.
