The Sox havent really selected anybody recently, so I am not surprised that they probably wont select anybody this year. Seems like a shame though, lose Hernandez, keep Gonzalez, and to not pick up anyone, not even to gain some cash in a draft and trade type deal, with the #8 pick (as I believe it would be the same order as the firsty year draft) it just seems like a waste.

Sox Acquire Carlos Quentin for Chris Carter; DFA Heath Phillips
bigruss replied to SoxFan1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 07:55 PM) Is Rogers actually suggesting here that Carter has a higher ceiling that Quentin? I would argue the exact opposite, given the positions they play. As a 1st baseman, compared to a corner OF, I think the guy putting up the high OPS in the OF, with better defense, and actually about 75-100 points higher of OPS, along with more speed based on the stolen base numbers, is more valuable. I might make the same argument for Cunningham/Richar. Yeah, Cunningham might put up 25-30 home runs in the OF, and a .900 OPS, but Richar might well put up a .850 OPS and 20 home runs from 2nd base with solid defense there. Yeah, Carter might be a 35 home run guy at 1b with a >900 OPS, but Quentin might well be a 25-30 home run guy in the OF with a >900 OPS. I think that the positions here make up a lot of the difference; it's a lot harder to find a guy to put up Quentin's numbers in the OF than at 1b, and it's a lot harder to find a 2nd baseman to put up those numbers than it is to find an OF. And whats with all the writers claiming we need more mid infielders? We already have Uribe (hopefully hes gone) and JB/Ozuna. We really dont need more, atleast its not a huge priority. -
Sox looking at Fukudome, Bay, not Rowand

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 07:52 PM) Fuk isn't going to happen. Looks we have our LF right now. My fantasy right now. -Halos lose out on Cabrera sweepstakes need a bat -Sox trade Konerko and Crede(16-17 million) to LAA for Kotchman and Figgins(around 5.5 million) -Sox sign Andruw Jones(16 per year) 2b-Figgins SS-Cabrera DH-Thome CF-Jones LF-Dye 3B-Fields 1B-Kotchman RF-Quentin C-Pierzynski You just spend like 6-7 million. What do we do with Richar then? Send him to AAA for another year? Or do we platoon him with Figgins and put Figgins in that supersub role? -

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 07:47 PM) I think this will go two ways: 1) If Kenny brings brack Rowand or signs Fukudome i think Owens starts in left field and Quentin is the 4th OF. This is because of the need for a leadoff hitter. 2) If Kenny goes ahead and gets Crisp to play CF, Quentin wil start in LF and Owens will be the 4th OF. Either way its pretty good situation to be in, this was a good move by KW. I can only see situation one with Quentin left out as a starter because he is still recovering from his surgery. Otherwise, just give me the best talent starting, and Quentin>>>>>>>>>Owens. Just put Richar at leadoff, as I dont see any other viable option, but the lineup is so much better without Owens starting (I do believe he could start for a team, just not ours, as in I dont think a championship contender could have Owens as a starter, unless every other position is fielded by a superstart. He just isnt ready to lead the offense) -

QUOTE(chiguy79 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 05:15 PM) Nice work KW...now if you can move Uribe for a bag of chips we will be making real progres.. How about trading Konerko to the Angels for Figgins and a decent starting pitcher (#3/#4). Then they will sign Rowand at CF, with Rowand back on the team Crede will sign a cheap incentive laden 2-yr. extension and Fields or Crede will play 1st. Just a thought but not too unrealistic at least I don't think so. The Angels seemed to be down on Figgins a bit last year. Fill all of our holes we become fairly flexible. Perhaps we still deal Crede (maybe at the break after his value improves) and try to get a 1B prospect from someone or included in the PK trade. 1B - Crede 2B - Richar SS - Cabrera 3B - Fields / Figgins C - AJP OF - Quentin, Rowand, Dye, / Figgins Bench: Figgins (super sub) Uribe (to be traded) Owens Pablo Rotation MB Javy Angels Pitcher Count Denks Enough with Crede going to first base already. He is only a starter in the bigs because of his defense. Otherwise he is looked upon as a bench player. Now I think his bat can come back, but his real strength is his fielding, and he becomes almost worthless at first base. -

QUOTE(Jeremy @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 02:46 PM) With all due respect, I think the value of Carter and Quentin as prospects are much closer than ceiling between you and Frank Thomas. I'd say that age is the number one factor when discussing ceiling. Players typically reach their prime around the age of 27 or 28. Hence Carter theoretically has 7 or 8 more years of improvement compared to two or three years for Quentin. Certainly tools are also a factor but age is critical. There's a reason you hear people talk about ceilings more with 19 year old pitchers dazzling in the minors than with 30 year old vets. Most likely because of the difference in TOOLS. If the 30 year old vet is still in the minors, it means he sucks and cant cut it. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 01:47 PM) IMO yes. He usually has an incredibly high OBP (.400+) so yeah he'd be a great fit at the top of a lineup that features quite a bit of power in the middle. I would really like Fuku, but Im not sure he is a CF. Ive heard his arm was stronger than Ichiros before his wrist surgery, but havent heard an update on that. Im guessing he is a much better corner guy, but with his offensive production I think it would be fine. He cant be worse than Mack out there -

QUOTE(bmags @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 01:12 PM) i'm seeing good things on him from like...2005. He has to be like 25 years old at this point. I dug this up Doesnt seem he has lived up to expectations yet, but was once a very good prospect. I do like that he is known to have a good OBP, but I dont know anything about the current player except he hit like .215 this past year -

Wow, we really like to swap our prospects with the DBacks dont we? I really like Carter, and Cunningham, and thought that Carter would turn into a good replacement for Paulie in a few years. But we are desperate for some outfielders, anyone got some good scouting on this kid? -
You know, I think it looks really cool, not really practical in that it wont hold much from the looks of it and lots of $, but very interesting. If you want to attract fans I guess you cant be normal, even though normal would include winning so maybe Im wrong

QUOTE(qwerty @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 06:55 PM) Linebrink and riske are nearly the same exact thing given their enviroment. The two flip leagues and it will not even make it close. Riske> linebrink. Riske has never been on a team where the park favors the pitcher... while linebrink has thrived in the best pitchers park in the majors. Both have the knack for keeping you on the edge of your seat. All that i have seen in this thread is cwsguy does not watch the games blah blah blah... how many games have any of you watched linebrink pitch in the last 8 seasons? I am sure for the majority it is less than what you saw riske pitch in 2006 for the white sox. Woooooooooooooooooooh that is a feces load!!!! YAYAYAYA. Damn though, i forgot riske cannot pitch in pressure situations and his entire season last year should be written off the books because he played for the royals last season. Linebrink clearly is just than much superior because he because he played on a winning team. Forgot all about that? Wite should have reminded me. What a dumbass. This is why i avoided the linebrink thread because i figured it would have been full of nonsense. And its been seen in the players that we have traded for from bad organizations, Mac, Masset, Sisco, etc., they dont perform as well as players who are more familiar with the pressure atmosphere and therefore can deal with it better.

The upside that Contreras brings is just too high right now. He proved late last year that he can still be effective, and he has a much better chance to be a large innings eater while giving the Sox a chance to compete than say a Floyd. If the Sox plan on winning this year (which all the trades and signings dictate) then they cannot go into next year with 3 AAA pitchers. Now im not saying that Contreras is going to be a stud, but he def. has the stuff and endurance to go 200 innings with an ERA around 4.5.

GM says Sox have options (Chicago Sports.com article)

QUOTE(Vance Law @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 03:43 PM) Fukodome seems ideal for us. He won't get as big a deal as Jones or Rowand and it seems he slaughter's both of them in terms of getting on base. I like the fact I haven't heard Williams mention him once. Never heard Hunter going to the Angels till it happened. Never heard a word about us getting Orlando till it happened. If the scouting is correct, he would be a great top of the order guy with the high OBP, place him with Cabrera and I think were looking a lot better. I would go 3/30 for him, maybe more with incentives, and Owens could stay in center or they can see who's better in ST. I still think that if were going to be competing this year that we cant afford both floyd and danks in the rotation, and a vet. needs to be signed. Im kinda liking Benson on a one year deal, he could be a quality 4/5 guy depending on how he is recovering from injury, my only other concern is his wife -

Can u draft your own players? I know it sounds ridiculous, but i really want to keep Hernandez, gah it just aggravates me that they would keep armstrong over him.

Miscellaneous "White Sox" Trade Notes

QUOTE(rcpweiner @ Nov 28, 2007 -> 12:23 PM) Don't mean to spam, but thought you all might enjoy this little piece about the seven completely illogical and probably illegal ways to fix the White Sox. Fantastic article, really made my day. I love the last part with taking Santana as spoils of war, actually going to the topic with who would win in a sox fight, we have a pretty big team and could probably takeon the twins. -
QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 08:18 PM) Don't forget the Sox would be dealing with Billy Beane here. He would want prospects that are CLOSE to the majors. Just like Haren was when they got him. So, it would have to be something a little closer. Gio, yes. And then.....who? Anderson, Sweeney, Broadway, Haeger, Phillips, Lucy, they can have em all, gimme Haren! I doubt they really want thsoe guys though...
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 27, 2007 -> 07:26 PM) I'd take Haren over DLS. The probability of DLS panning out are very slim and Dan Haren emerged as a top of the rotation starter this year. Plus I believe hes very reasonably signed here it is from rotoworld: Dan Haren's four-year deal with the A's is worth $12.65 million. Haren gets a $200,000 signing bonus, $500,000 next year, $2.2 million in 2007, $4 million in 2008 and $5.5 million in 2009. There is a $6.75 million team option for 2010 with a $250,000 buyout. Escalators can raise his 2009 salary by $750,000 and his 2010 pay by $1 million. There is language in the contract that if Haren pitches a certain number of innings, the club option for 2010 becomes guaranteed. thats very cheap for what he brings, and I would give them DLS, and maybe a Gio or Danks along with that for him (plus whatever type of throw ins they want), but I would like to keep Carter if possible

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 25, 2007 -> 02:27 PM) Like Sisco, Massett, or Aardsma? Thats what I was thinking, maybe more like guys like Wasserman, or Buckvich, or the mighty Printz -
QUOTE(Lemon_44 @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 07:12 PM) I think the guy KW is after is Bobby Abreu. They have been rumored to have interest in the past and the Sox/Yanks have been trading partners in the past. Maybe the Sox make a big deal with the Yanks and acquire Abreu and Melky Cabrera. Who do we give up? I like Melky, and Abreu would be nice with his OBP, but he is expensive. Plus, unless the guys we get are really good in return (Crawford, Miggy) I dont think its worth the young talent required to get these guys. Crede may get you Abreu, but the Sox will probably have to give up a prospect to get him, and Melky has a lot of value too. I just dont see that happening.

QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Nov 24, 2007 -> 11:21 AM) The "right guy" in the outfield Williams was talking about was probably Miguel Cabrera. With his bat in the lineup the Sox could afford to take a chance on Owens in CF. They'd have to anyway, because they would most likely have to spend all their trading chits to get him. Is that a combination of "chips" and "s%!t"? if so very clever! I just hope that other teams balk at the asking price for Miggy and we get him, but KW has his work cut out for him, but hasnt it been rumored taht the Marlins like Owens? Maybe they like Anderson more?

QUOTE(bschmaranz @ Nov 23, 2007 -> 10:51 PM) Jerry Owens will break the record this season, I can feel it! What about Andy GONEzalez? Id put him at heavy odds of breakin it

This type of news is always humbling for me, and hopefully for all. It brings us out of our fantasy world and back into reality where these players arent just guys on the field, but real human beings with families. My thoughts go out to his wife and son.

Torii Hunter signs with LAA Angels
bigruss replied to joejoesox's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
Maybe we can bring in Jenkins now, from what Ive heard he is very good def., and he would still give you atleast an average bat, but one that may strike out alot. Still, he wouldnt be all taht expensive, just another option i guess.
