Torii Hunter signs with LAA Angels
bigruss replied to joejoesox's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
The Angels just confuse me, but I wouldnt be surprised if they have an outclause in Matthews contract if he is found to have officially taken HGH or steroids, and maybe they see this as an oppurtunity to upgrade old CF for old CF. As much as I would like to get Crawford, I think it will cost too much pitching and would love to see Willits come here and platoon him with Owens (I admit taht I dont really know their splits but it seems it would work). Plus sign Fukodome and you have a beginning to competing again. Now all we need is another good starter or two... -
OFFICIAL: Sox Sign Linebrink - 4 yrs, 19 mil
bigruss replied to soxbearsbulls's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Bye Scotty...Hello Scotty! In terms of that trade of players there we won! plus that only cost us what? an extra 1.75 mill? I like the signing in that linebrink is one of the best reliever on the market, hopefully improving our dismal bullpen. Now I think with one more addition our bullpen has the ability to really be good, and hopefully we sign or trade for another dependable starter who is under the radar to help these guys out too. -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 07:16 PM) Rogo is kind of an A's type player, walks alot, take pitches, nice OBP. Wait isnt that what we need? 1/2 green
-
From BA: Bye bye Rogo, hopefully he makes the A's and has a successful career or even just an oppurtunity with them. I know that this was in another thread, but still weird that some say JB was signed and Baseball America doesnt have that yet.

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 21, 2007 -> 12:39 PM) With the White Sox. As was discussed on this site yesterday, the Sox may have already had an agreement with him on a contract, and hence no pressing need to put him on the 40 man. I am very grateful for that, now all we need is to ship off cintron(most likely release him as I doubt he has any value) and Uribe to fill in those spots with cheaper, younger, better talent.
-
Can we please drop Andy Gonzalez and add Hernandez? This is rediculous, Gonzalez wont or shouldnt make the team and showed us last year that he is worthless, so why keep him besides that OG might be friends with him. Seriously, Ozzie just go adopt him and keep him in the dugout if youre going to miss him so much. I just hate it when the Sox waste young talent, i dont know too much about this guy except for the fact taht he has unbelievable stats and will be very likely to be picked in the Rule 5 draft.
-
Still no Beorgois (sp? i can never remember that name). I still hope that we trade Uribe and give this kid a shot.

QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 05:38 PM) The funny thing is that Poreda would have been drafted by quite a few teams in the picks immediate after when the Sox went. I thought you could only get drafted once?

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 02:09 PM) Crede for a bullpen arm or one of the outfield spots would make some sense and I think that will probably be the first piece to drop (unless of course they are able to get a hold of Rowand or Hunter and make something happen). Than I think Kenny will turn to the trade front and do the remainder of his stuff there. Possibly selling two players in Konerko and one starter but also likely adding other young players (maybe a young SS who he really likes but the club will also know they have Uribe there in case any of the young infielders at 3rd/SS/2b fail). Hell if you could add a Rowand to the lineup and than move Konerko for a package around Kochman/Figgins/Santana (and i have no idea if the Angels would do such a package) than you would really have retooled your lineup with two moves. Trade Crede for a bullpen arm and you are in business (this doesn't even get into the Garland piece where the Sox could opt to move him for another starter that they like that they would have under there control). In fact, on the basis just those two moves would give you a lineup of: Figgings Rowand Thome Dye Kochman Fields AJP Uribe Richar Rotation: Vazquez Buehrle Garland Contreras Santana Bullpen: Jenks MacDougall Thornton Logan Wasserman (Person you traded Crede for) The only major holes would obviously be Uribe and Richar (Richar has some upside and Uribe when on is a premiere defensive shortstop). The Sox lineup would lack the power it once had but you still have a few guys that will hit 30 HRs (Crede/Thome) and guys with 20 Hr power (Fields/Uribe). The rotation would have the possibilities of being stellar but it would also give Ken Williams the option to move Garland for other pieces (a shortstop like Furcal or a top shortstop prospect and top pitching prospect; think two top 5 organizational prospects). To me the main way the Sox can rebuild is by using Konerko (and I have no idea if the Angels would give up all that for Paulie but I could definitely see them considering it), a free agent signing and than the trades of Crede/Garland to do the rest (hell if they could move Contreras instead I'd have no problem giving Garland a fat contract because financially I think the team could afford it). I believe you meant Dye, but thats cool...anywho I love Paulie and would hate to see him be traded but it does seem like it would be best for the team in the return package. I still would like to see if the Sox can sign a bullpen piece, preferably cheap from Japan, to compete with MacD and see who wins the battle in spring training, and if Mac loses you can trade him for scraps but still have a quality guy there to replace him. I wouldnt mind trading Contreras just to get rid of contract, depending on what guys like Kris Benson are asking for, maybe jsut sign a rebounding vet like CLement to a one year deal and hope that Danks improves in AAA during the time and if that vet fails you got a lot of options at AAA

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 15, 2007 -> 03:34 PM) Ugh. I can't resist... --Profitable in baseball is relative. Even the Sox don't make more than a few percentage points of net profit. --The net worth of the franchise has nothing to do with its cash position. Those are seperate things. Do you want Jerry to sell some part of the team for more money in payroll? --If money is the only reason the Yankees are so good, and they spend 30% more than any other team, why haven't they won a championship in 7 years? --The Sox had the 4th highest payroll in baseball last year, and had the 7th worst record. The Colorado Rockies made the world series and were 25th in payroll. Just because a team has money to spend that does not automatically make them better. The talent has to be available, the talent has to perform, and there is no predicting that to any precise degree. Exactly, money doesnt win, but it sure helps to sign that "missing" piece if you do need one. But really the money is most important in the draft and development phases. An added 4 mill to the draft would make a HUGE difference, and the hiring of good coaches would also greatly improve the farm system. Then you can save money on the free agent market as you fill the team with cheap young talent (hence the Rockies). So really you can be strapped pretty tightly with money but still have a good team on the field, it all depends on whether a team realizes they need to draft and develop well to save them in the future.

How do you play? If you guys wouldnt mind explaining it to me I would be interested because Im always looking for baseball games to waste my time as Baseball Mogul is getting quite boring and I need a new challenge.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 08:03 PM) The whole reason people bring up Hall as an option is that he seems like a solid upgrade from Uribe at SS even in his bad years. No one wants to put Hall in CF for us. But I do agree with you that Hall is not enough to ask for Garland. Seriously, I dont but the year difference. Basically Garland has a lot of trade value because he is above average and the league is starved for young starters (he is still what? 29 years old?) and is affordable for next year. If Jennings can bring back what he did last year, Garland should bring back about the same, and Bill Hall isnt that good, yes he has the potential to be better but he still isnt going to be a stud. Pitching is just too valuable right now for taht trade to be fair for the Sox.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 07:07 PM) Cabrera's under control for 2 years, not one. I wouldn't completely rule out a deal. Staying with Ozzie does indicate some comfort level. Now, the Sox may not be willing to give him a 10-year deal, I can agree with that. But I doubt Cabrera would even be looking for such a deal. That would make his next deal come around in his mid-/late-30s, when his best years are well behind him. It would make more sense to angle for the monster contract when he's 29 or so -- right after his peak years. That's why I think it's plausible that the Sox could buy out a year or two of his free agency, at least. Worst comes to worst, he's determined to try free agency at the first possible opportunity, you still get two almost-peak years from a top-5 player in the game and two picks at the end. You can always swap him this season at the deadline, and you should net a better haul than Texas did in the Teixeira deal. If the worst possible long-term scenario is that you swap your prospects for a group of prospects like that, it looks like a pretty good risk, imo. Then why dont the Marlins just wait that half year or so to trade him to a desperate team? As much as I would like him to come to the Sox, he ain't. Its a fantasy, the Dodgers or Angels just need to give up a small fraction of their loaded farm system for him while we would have to give up basically our whole system. I would put it at 95% that the Sox wont get him.
-
I dont see any names of significance in here, but maybe somebody else knows more about one or all. Also, I really hope the Sox bring back Beorgouis (sp?), and look at Knoedler who seems like a young cathcer who could compete at AAA with Lucy.
-
So if the Sox could get him on a one year deal would you do it? Maybe 1 year $16-17 mill? Keeps options open at end of the year, plus we may get draft picks for him if he has a good year and the free agent class is weak. Thoughts?

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Nov 11, 2007 -> 10:40 AM) How stupid would the Sox look if they ended up signing him? They didn't bother to offer him arbitration after making $1.8 million, AND HE WAS A TYPE A FREE AGENT. Dumbasses. Maybe with the market as weak as it is and a career year for him somebody would risk a 1st/2nd round pick for him, but last year nobody wouldve signed him and lose a pick, i mean he went to the Royals because no contender wanted him. The Sox were very smart not to resign him at the time because he showed he wasnt up to any type of pressure situations and the Sox felt they were going to contend, so why offer arb. to a player you dont think will help you win and then most likely get stuck with him at a cost you dont want?

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 7, 2007 -> 06:44 PM) I like Luke Scott in the Mack role more and more. His obp would be nice. But do you give up Garland for that? Seems like we should get more in return than a bench/semi fulltime player. I think Scott could become a good player, but I would shoot higher than that.

QUOTE(RME JICO @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 09:09 PM) What would be a realistic package? Fields, Anderson, Gio/Danks, Egbert/DLS, Carter, Broadway, Phillips Something with those pieces, basically i dont think the sox would trade away both danks and gio but they may give up egbert and DLS in this deal. It would give the Marlins plenty of pitching and a great pos. prospect in fields and a centerfield candidate in Anderson. Im not really sure if this is too much for him or not enough, i dont know exactly what each guy is worth and what the market is for Cabrera, but this is a starting guess from me.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 6, 2007 -> 01:01 PM) A couple decent updates today. The Indians picked up the options on 3 pitchers and the Red Sox re-signed Schilling. Maybe you should put asteriks by Guillen and Byrd as they now are caught with the HG/steroid scandal. Will the Sox still pursue JG? Hed be cheaper but that baggage history comes back to haunt him.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 08:56 PM) I think the bigger issue with a guy like Hu is that its probably going to take the Dodgers a long time to sort out their season, because it's going to be weeks at least before the ARod derby ends, and they won't want to move any of Hu, Furcal, or Laroche, unless it's a really good deal for them, until they know they're out of that race. And I really doubt KW is in a patient mood this offseason. Good point, I am more of a supporter of going young, so I would love an Aybar, Hu, Tulowitzki (I know I know, a complete dream now) as I think the future for the Sox and all succesful teams will be how the young players contribute, and free agency cant save a teams a$$ anymore. Even guys like Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia have been rumored to get 6-7 mill, which is rediculous, so teams who draft well and develop well will rule the league, aka Arizona, COlorado (already showing the shift with those two), Milwaukee, etc. Anywho, I dont think the Sox can even afford the pieces it would take to acquire a young good shortstop, so they will be forced to take on a bad contract like Furcals, or sign a terrible shortstop in Eckstein.
-
Hu please. Just so Hawk can say Hu's on first. But really I think he is going to be a special player but one who may cost too much for the Sox to acquire.

Brian Anderson's strong words about Winter Ball...

QUOTE(RME JICO @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 08:05 PM) From the Merkin mailbag: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...sp&c_id=cws I wouldnt give too much more than Anderson for Hall, maybe a c prospect or so, since our system is so bare and we need to add to it not trade away the few pieces we have -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 08:39 PM) I'll just throw this scenario out there. Sox get Cabrera. Mariners get Garland plus another Sox prospect. Marlins get Gio Gonzalez, Balentien, Jeff Clement and another Sox prospect. Do you really want Cabrera? Yes, I understand he is one of the best young hitters in the league, but the baggage coming with him makes him unappealing to me for the cost. First, he will soon be limited to DH since he is so lazy and has lost that nice muscular physique which scouts once drooled over and now is quite chubby. Second, you are going to have to pay him pretty soon in excess of $20 mill per year, a huge price for a DH Third, you are going to be giving up your farm system for him, which I would be in favor of if it wasnt for a guy eating while he ran the bases. Our system is pretty bare so u can look at it like we arent giving up much, but then again we wont have anything after this trade.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 06:19 PM) Yankee fans thoughts on a possible trade... http://forums.nyyfans.com/showthread.php?t=107567 Wow these guys are idiots. One wanted Fields and Garland JUST for Damon Another Wanted DLS for Damon. Another wanted Crede and Gio. They apparently know nothing...

Baseball America: Chicago White Sox (33) Righthanders: Ryan Bukvich, Jason Childers, Josh Fields, Vladimir Nunez, Jake Robbins, Eduardo Sierra, Geurys Trinidad, John Wesley Lefthanders: Tim Bittner, Nikolas Lubisich, Corwin Malone, Paulino Reynoso, Joe Torres, Ryan Wing Catchers: Jeremy Frost, Wiki Gonzalez, Ryan Smith First basemen: Casey Rogowski, Earl Snyder Second baseman: Jason Bourgeois Shortstops: Victor Mercedes, Kenny Perez, Tomas Perez, Luis Sierra Outfielders: Cory Aldridge, Shawn Garrett, Archie Gilbert, Kenny Kelly, Alex Sanchez, Adam Shabala, Sean Smith, Craig Wilson, Ernie Young So we had another Josh Fields? Im surprised they didnt accidently call up the wrong one. So who should be resigned? I say maybe Malone, Reynoso, for bullpen insurances. WIng should be resigned since he had a tremendous year for himself, and Bourgeois should be able to compete for a roster spot. Im surprised he wasnt called up, even if his stats prior to the last season were mediocre we couldve found out if he had a future with the team then. Thoughts?
