QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 03:01 PM) BTW.. the ride was cancelled. Too windy. Didn't feel too windy.. but I guess it's best to listen to the pilot in a situation like that. Do you have a reschedule date set? How much does this cost - I would love to try that some day.

This happened a few blocks from my house - the church mentioned is the one that I attend. Brian just called and said that according to an article he read this bastard is on paid leave - not sure if this is the same as noted below (sun-times is what I think they get at his work, but I could be wrong). for the young man and his family. ABC Article Boy struck by drunk driving officer dies By Michelle Gallardo July 3, 2005 — A 15-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a car while walking his bike. The driver of the car is an officer with the Illinois Department of Corrections. He is charged with DUI. Fifteen-year-old Andrew Keating was struck Thursday night at the intersection of St. Louis and 115th Street by a drunk Illinois Department of Corrections officer. As it now turns out, the officer did not have insurance, did not have a license and also had a record for driving under the influence. Andrew's family is outraged. "At this point, I don't care what he was employed as. It's just not right either way," said Stephen Keating, victim's father. "No one took the trouble to locate this guy, and everyone knew that he was a multiple offender, as far as driving on a suspended or revoked license, that he was operating a vehicle to and from his employment without a license, without insurance, that he had an outstanding warrant," said Tony Peraica, Cook County commissioner. Andrew Keating was struck by Johnny Leland's car Thursday night as he walked his bicycle across the street at 115th and St. Louis. He died Saturday afternoon. Sunday, family and friends came together at St. Christina's church in Merrionette Park. "Everybody loved him. Very sensitive. He was into his music. He loved his cars. He wanted to be a race car driver, couldn't wait to get his permit and just an exceptional, exceptional boy," said Elisa Keating, victim's mother. While nothing can bring Andrew Keating back, his family wants justice. "We're going to be asking the state's attorney's office of Cook County to upgrade these charges to a felony charge. We feel a misdemeanor charge in the death of a young man is simply not appropriate," said Peraica, Cook County commissioner. For its part, the Illinois Department of Corrections issued a statement, which said: "After learning about the incident on Friday, we took immediate action. He was put on administrative lockout. On Tuesday, the agency will move forward to take further action regarding his employment status." The Illinois Department of Corrections would not comment on whether they knew that Leland had a previous record for DUI. Leland is now out on $130,000 bail. Some neighbors in the area said this is not the first time there has been a tragic accident at this intersection. They say over the last few years, there have actually been several. They are now pushing for either a four-way stop or a light to be placed at the intersection to avoid any future tragedies. NBC article

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jul 5, 2005 -> 02:18 PM) Something has to be done to do away with frivolus lawsuits like this. Yeah this is going to get dismissed post-haste but still it costs money for companies and various governments to defend against them. Which is why most do not defend them - they settle out of court asap. I could not believe some of the most inane court cases that happened at the last company I was at. The worst was one where the plaintiff should have been brought up on murder charges, and instead profitted from his gf's grandfather's death. It's unbelieveable the amount of money paid out because it is cheaper to settle than to go to court even if the company/government wins. :puke

I read yesterday that Garland and Buerhle made it but hadn't noticed about Konerko until today - shocked the hell outta me.

Brian was celebrating when he read that Boone was designated. He follows the Mariners and said that Boone has sucked for about a year now and he was also glad Boone was gone because there was too much there saying he did roids that year to get the home runs.

That is one fantastic banner!

I'll believe it when I see it. Just get it done already.

We saw Land of the Dead and would like to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well as Fantastic Four (and I think there was one other one Brian and I were debating on seeing).

While the As are hot, bear in mind who they played 7 of their last 10 games again (I think it was 7 anyways)...the Mariners.

I am excited and nervous about this.

QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 01:13 PM) I don't know.. I've had a cell phone since I was 13. There was never a time in my adult life I didn't have access to make a call immediately. I didn't have one until I was 21 or 22 and the only reason I got it was because I was working far from home and already was stranded once on the Ike when my car broke down. Now for someone who didn't have one for a long time...Brian - I bought him his first cell a few months back and he is 33.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 11:21 AM) realize I have completely spaced-out for the past few minutes. I don't know how I ended up where I did, all I know is I have arrived at my destination but can't really remember changing lanes, making turns, etc. I do this in the morning and I hate it when it happens. I will occasionally take a call while driving, but rarely and usually only if I am at a stop light or stopped in traffic.

QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 11:07 AM) If I didn't sleep during them I might be pissed about them going off at 3am... but I think I would just go ask them to stop versus calling the cops. For a majority of our neighbors, that's how we would handle it. There are a couple that are impossible and we wouldn't even waste our breath and just call the cops to deal with it if it was causing problems.

A well written, accurate column.

My everyday car is a 2002 Grabber Green Cougar. The coolest car we have though is (until the body work and paint job is done on the Fairlane next summer):
