QUOTE(Wedge @ Aug 12, 2006 -> 03:13 PM) Yeah, I agree with you. I don't agree with the notion of a "good game manager". Sure, you can optimize your decisions to win any given game (and I'm sure Ozzie could do it, too), but you have to manage an entire season, you have to manage a certain way. I think Ozzie's pretty good at that and I feel like Girardi is, too. I haven't seen Girardi manage much, seeing as how Florida is on the other side of the world, I do not have Extra Innings, and they are on ESPN or Fox like once a year, but I imagine he, like Ozzie, knows when he can f*** around and when he cannot.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 12, 2006 -> 01:57 PM) Believe it or not, if you ask a Marlin fan, most would agree they'd have more wins if Girardi wasn't such a bad in game manager. White Sox fans said that about a certain someone too. The next year they won 99 games and the World Series. Not making a direct comparison between Girardi and Guillen...just saying that poor in game managing does not make him a bad manager. I'm not sure the Marlins are even close to floating without Girardi.

We win tomorrow and we win this division

QUOTE(Allsox @ Aug 12, 2006 -> 02:59 PM) I hope you're right. I also hope Ozzie doesn't dump the entire bench into the starting lineup tomorrow You don't have to hope. Ozzie's not dumb. -
Now would be a good time for our first sweep in a while

Who will be the best QB in the league this year?
witesoxfan replied to cuddlyboy26's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I still say JP Losman is going to be the best QB in the NFL this year -
QUOTE(CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 07:07 PM) That pitch from Rivera to Thome in the 7-6 loss drifted right down the middle. When I saw the location and Thome about to swing I was all ready to yell my head off. I couldn't belive he beat it into the ground. I'd say nagging injuries must be slowing him down a bit. The Thome of April and May would have driven that low but right fown the middle pitch a long way. You are not the only one who thought that. I saw the location, I saw where the ball was going to connect with the bat, and I celebrated for a tenth of a second.

Garza could be solution to 5th spot in rotation...
witesoxfan replied to CWSOX45's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Aug 12, 2006 -> 01:17 AM) Why is everybody so down on Broadway anyway? Garza wasnt even supposed to go in the first round, most tems would have passed on him. Broadway has a great curve and is putting up great numbers in AA. A level a lot of first round picks haven't reached yet. Everybody complains about his strikeout rate (which is a legit complaint) but Lumsden's strikeout rate was worse and everybody loved him. I would love to see the Sox take more high upsied guys, but I don't get the Broadway hate. Because Broadway does not have outstanding stuff. Good stuff, no doubt, but not ace stuff. More hits than innings pitched is never a good sign either. Then again, seeing as how he was in the same rotation as Tyler Lumsden, the same Lumsden who most would agree has better stuff than Broadway(FWIW, and it's probably worth a metric s***ton in this argument, I am basing all this on scouting reports, random hearsay, and stats), he too was probably told to pitch to contact too, and seeing as how he has a respectable, though not great, K/9 ratio, and that his K/BB is a very respectable 3, and(again, considering he is probably pitching to contact), his H/9 of >9 is probably not the worst thing in the world QUOTE(Heads22 @ Aug 12, 2006 -> 01:28 AM) Everybody talks about Lump's K rate....but he was told to try pitching to contact. That doesn't surprise me at all. I was looking up his stats tonight, and noticed he has 8 walks in 12.2 IP in Wichita, but has 9 Ks. Even though that's just a very short time period, it's nothing even close to his stats on the year. I had a hunch that he was looking more for the strikeout in KC, whereas he was looking for contact in Chicago. Different philosophies for different teams. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 12, 2006 -> 01:46 AM) 2.2 IP, 7 ER in debut. Didn't see the game, though the dad said his stuff looked good. There was apparently a ball hit by Lyle Overbay that Hunter dogged a little bit and let slip under his glove, bringing in 2 runs, and ruining any confidence the kid had going into the game. He was also a bit wild up in the zone, and he had just a little too much faith in the 97 MPH fastball that he could blow my minor leaguers, but couldn't blow by the Jays #9 hitter. Major leaguers can hit 102 MPH fastballs if they know it's coming, and they can hit it hard as hell if they know where it's coming. Ask Zumaya about his attempt to blow a fastball by Justin Morneau on Thursday. EDIT: Saw the Overbay hit. It wasn't as badly as my dad had described it to me, but that's a ball that Hunter can get to when he's 100%. -
QUOTE(Harry&JimmyRocked @ Aug 12, 2006 -> 02:02 AM) does anyone know the reason you can't fake to first but you can fake to the other bases? you'd think it would be illegal or legal for every base. courtesy answerbag.com I hadn't thought about the RISP, but I kind of figured the guaranteed force at 2B had something to do with it. Not sure why exactly. I also thought perhaps the runner on 1B being held about 99.9% of the time may have had something to do with it too, but you can do the same thing at 2B or 3B(not smart, but you can do it), and faking a throw is still legal.

To have any chance of winning the division...

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 07:11 PM) Most importantly Leyland? He fills out the lineup card and gives good pep talks. I dunno, I guess I wouldn't mind knowing my leader has dealt with adversity, and knowing that he has a pretty solid track record when it comes to the playoffs, and knowing he has a World Series ring...but then again, maybe that's just me. -
Note to Jim Leyland: next time you skip Verlander's start, make sure it's one against the Sox FOOKING NOICE

I also just realized how completely inaccurate this article is. They have the Angels ranked as the second best bench, yet they apparently have two everyday players(Figgins and Rivera) on their bench...? Sure Rivera can play all 3 OF positions, and sure Figgins can play every friggin position....that doesn't make them bench players. Hell, Figgins has played in 111 of 115 Angels games this year. What the f...

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 06:06 PM) Idonno man they arent that far off. They got 2 hitting prospects that probably will be ready to hit major league pitching. Only problem is Teahen and Gordon both play the same position and it seems they have their future 1B at least for the time being already on the team. So unless they boot Sweeney there is a log jam. Than they can possibly add Lumsden and Greinkie to the rotation next season and that to go with Hernandez, Hudson, and Elarton isnt all that bad considering what they have trot out there in past seasons. Moore is trying Justin Huber in the OF to see if he can handle it on both a short-term and long-term basis. There is also nothing stopping them from trying Teahen or Gordon in the OF, using one of them as a DH, or perhaps even packaging one of them up at a later date in a deal. I am not sure exactly what Moore's take on loyalty is, but you can probably bet that he will look to move Sweeney. Bad contract, injury prone, and a bit older...doesn't exactly fit in with a youth movement. Also, I tend to doubt Lumsden will be in the rotation next year. Players generally don't jump from AA to the majors, especially when their peripherals(136.1 IP, 125 H, 81/48 K/BB) aren't outstanding. His pitching great, don't get me wrong, but he'll be in AAA next year, unless he impresses the hell out of someone in spring training. (BTW, for comparison's sake, Mark Buehrle at the time of his callup in 2000 - 118.1 IP, 95 H, 68/17 K/BB)

QUOTE(CWSOX45 @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 12:06 PM) Just win. a-f***ing-men QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 04:02 PM) All I want to see is the Sox put some pressure on the Tigers for the next two months. They haven't played with pressure yet all year because there really is no pressure until the last two months of the season. They play great playing loose and letting it fly. Put pressure on guys who've never been here before and then see how they do. I'm not saying they'll fold...but it could knock them off their stride. Carlos Guillen - Seattle Magglio Ordonez - Chicago Ivan Rodriguez - Texas and Florida Sean Casey - Cincinnati Kenny Rogers - friggin everywhere Todd Jones - Minnesota, Boston, Florida most importantly Jim Leyland - Florida and Pittsburgh I'm probably missing a few too. They have guys who have been there. The young guys haven't, but there's enough experience, that I don't think pressure is gonna be foreign. I do agree that putting a little pressure on them would be nice. -
Just curious, how can we have the best bench in baseball when we don't have a backup outfielder? I realize Macko can play OF...but he's like the one and only guy on the bench that can play a half decent OF, and unfortunately, he is horrendous in CF. As far as bats off the bench go, I'd agree 100% that the Sox bench is the best. The Sox have like 3-4 guys that would be starting on bad or even mediocre teams on the bench.

I don't think Toronto is for real(just an opinion really, nothing great to back it up), Boston is going through a rough spell with a lot of injuries(and KC looks like a real team now with a front office that has a clue...I also think what happened to them in the beginning of the year was just hit a massive friggin slump. I would personally say right now that KC is probably as good, if not better, than Cleveland. Not nearly as talented though). From what I saw of New York, they are for real. That offense is probably the best in the majors RIGHT NOW...if by some chance of bad luck Sheffield and Matsui come back healthy, they are going to be dangerous as hell come playoff time. The pitching is mediocre, but with an offense that talented with they way they are hitting, mediocre pitching may as well be bad pitching and they could still win the World Series. Once again, if the Sox make the playoffs, New York is a team I do not want to see.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 02:03 PM) I have a serious question though. Now I don't boo the fake the 3rd, throw to 1st move since I know it's technically not a balk, however I thought part of the balk rule involves the term "deceiving the runner" (which is why somebody has to be holding on the runner at 1st for you to throw over there). So in that case, why isn't the fake to 3rd, throw to 1st move a balk? Faking to 2B or 3B while on the rubber is completely legal, while faking to 1B while on the rubber is illegal, and you can fake to any base while off the rubber. Once a fake pickoff to 2B or 3B has been done, you are off the rubber, and can go anywhere with the ball.

QUOTE(SoxAce @ Aug 11, 2006 -> 12:08 AM) That was the first game in a long time that Javier Vasquez grew some balls. He really battled out there. Ima still back you up and it isn't because your first name is the same as my brother. So players can just grow balls from time to time? Hell of a win. Damn near could have been a sweep, which would have been ridiculously awesome, but I think I'll take 2 of 3 from the Yanks.

you guys are f***ing stupid s***s

what the f*** was that Crede walks to load the bases. AJ doesn't see a strike and pops out. Cintron the same. Do these guys not see what the Yankees are doing and realize that that's how to be a good offensive club or what?

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 09:19 PM) If 2005 never happened, then everyone would be saying this is just another typical Sox year. Right now, we have no way of knowing what path this team will follow. I'm usually Mr. Pessimism, but some of these comments tonight are too much. I actually dont know if 20 games over .500 is a typical Sox year. Usually they are hanging 5-10 games below .500, turn it on in August, and then finish 7 games back at the end of the year.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 09:09 PM) Pathetic excuse. One I'm not subscribing to. It's essentially shrugging your shoulders if they lose. "Oh well." I expect consistent starting pitching from a rotation (supposedly) molded from the hand of GOD. If they're failing to achieve expectations -- that is, pitch atleast around career averages -- I'm not going to be very pleased and rest upon last years achievements. Agreed However, if they were to actually play well, and just didn't make the playoffs, I'd be perfectly fine. Then again, if they actually play well, they are in the playoffs, so that's really a moot point. I see no way that this team could play very good baseball and not make the playoffs.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 08:35 PM) Are people still saying the Abreu trade won't help the Yankees that much? Oh, and this inning has sucked all of the momentum out of the team that they gained last night. More and more, I'm starting to believe this team is like every other Sox team pre-2005. We just keep waiting for that magical spark to send us on that definitive streak, and it never comes or they never capitalize on said spark. Mediocre top of the order. Pisspoor top of the order. Tons of power in-between. Mediocre starting pitching. Solid bullpen. The only thing that's missing is Frnak Thomas and me being in 9th grade again.
