QUOTE(Bonderman38 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 10:34 PM) The Sox didn't average 100 losses in the last five years and they didn't lose 119 games in 2003 though. They were equally surprising. Both were teams that hadn't done spiff in a decade. The Tigers sucked the past 10 years or so, while the Sox were mediocre. You generally never strive to suck or strive for mediocrity(unless you're the Cubs), so there is no pride really in either.

QUOTE(Hanger @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 12:10 PM) Think it would be better keeping Pods, Soriano second. That would make your 7-8-9 hitters be, Tadihito or A.J, Crede and Uribe...not terrible for getting Soriano some RBI chances. If you take Anderson off this team, they are hopeless. That man is busting his balls, offensively and defensively, to try and help this team win games.

QUOTE(Damen @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 11:11 AM) Sure McCarthy's capable of doing that, but Ozzie won't let him unless the games in extras. Yeah, McCarthy could do it too, but I'd prefer he ended up in the rotation

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 11:22 AM) Convince me Brandon McCarthy is better than Javier Vazquez today. You really can't come up with an argument. I'm convinced that McCarthy could give us more than one quality start over a 2 month period. That's how bad Vazquez has been. That's all I need to convince me. It may not convince you, but that's fine.

Sox fans have a pretty common feeling about the farm system. I too only care to see Sweeney stay. The rest can go and I won't miss them for a second. Fields is probably the only real impact power bat we have at the higher levels, but with such poor plate discipline, it's hard to see him becoming anything more than Russell Branyan(which is solid in it's own regards, just not great). Sweeney's power hasn't come, but worst case scenario, you're looking at a guy with a .280 average and a .700 OPS or some such spiff, with a cannon for an arm in right field. Best case, by 2009, you can count on him for about .300 25 100 .370/.480/.850 or something along those lines, perhaps better

Heath Phillips. It's not as fun, but it's better than giving up more friggin prospects.

QUOTE(Adam G @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 10:44 AM) I've heard that argument, but I dont buy it really. Even if they are technically only 5 games out in the WC, they're 4 games under .500 in the NL. That's an awful team, any way you cut it. They're adding players...it doesn't matter what their record is. They are buyers in this market, not sellers, and they've pretty well established that already.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 25, 2006 -> 10:05 AM) Carl salary was way too high for arbitration and the Sox's original plan was to re-sign him and trade Maggs off to Boston. The Boston trade fell through, so we didn't need Everett. Maggs and McCarthy were off to Boston for Garciaparra and Williamson, and KW had a contract with Juan Gonzalez ready to sign, just waiting on the ARod to Boston trade going through, and it never happened. Also...if Fields, Sweeney, McCarthy, and Broadway aren't being moved, than this entire extremely close to a deal ordeal is smoke with no fire. Not a chance in hell Bowden is moving Soriano without atleast 2 of those 4, let alone none of them.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 12:31 AM) I don't really think many people were being all that serious talking about A-Rod comming to the Sox, it was ore fun speculation than anything else. Must you always be such a buzzkill? Yes QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 12:32 AM) Wite is no fun. ATLEAST I AM NOT A DOLPH DOLPHINS FAN QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 12:43 AM) No way. I don't want to trade this team's future for someone who's just gonna be 5- or 6-year rental. Jackie, not many ever catch it when you make a joke, do they? What I will say is that while ARod isn't coming here this season, the thought of him in the Sox lineup would intrigue me and probably Kenny Williams in the offseason, when more such moves are made. Does that help a little Kalapse?

QUOTE(CySox @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 12:21 AM) I don't care, give up Garcia/Vazquez and Montero for him, IMO, he'd be perfect for this team. Imagine our bullpen with him... Jenks, CP Cotts, SU Sanchez, SU Thornton, MRP Riske, MRP Tracey, LRP We would have the best young bullpen, plus once it hits the 7th inning, you can say good night. That is a perfect balance of power pitching, and finese pitching. You got Jenks, Sanchez, and Thornton throwing it up there 96+, you got Tracy throwing it up there at 95, and we got Cotts and Riske throwing in the high 80's to low 90's. Oh well, it's just a pipe dream. Minaya turned down Garcia for Sanchez, and throwing in a soon to be 29-year old career minor leaguer who put up an ERA of 5.46 LAST year in AA is not going to change his mind. Sanchez isn't going to go anywhere, unless Minaya gets crazy desperate. It's not like the Mets are out of the playoff race.

QUOTE(toasty @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 12:15 AM) and people said we wouldnt bring back everett again last time First of all, you are comparing trading for Carl Everett to trading for Alex Rodriguez. Second of all, no one ever said that about trading for Everett. And finally, ARod isn't coming here, just like Beltran wasn't coming here in the 04-05 offseason. People, cheesus lice, be realistic here. We are only talking about like the second best hitter in the game here, and perhaps the most valuable player in the game as a shortstop. It's a dream and nothing more. This team has much more pressing needs than an upgrade at shortstop.

QUOTE(spiderman @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 10:21 PM) gotta hope for 2 out of 3 here....hopefully, the bats will come alive tomorrow. This is the kind of mentality that has the Sox 6.5 games behind Detroit. You do not HOPE for 2 out of 3. You SETTLE for 2 out of 3. You must EXPECT to sweep EVERY series from here on out. It's impossible to sweep the season, but a 6.5 game lead isn't going away overnight. The question is not in talent, the question right now is in the heart and desire this team has. Fish the Wild Card, man. Beat the living hell out of the Twins in the next 3 games, and then move on to the next opponent.

fish u spiff eating beaches HELLZ YES

QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 04:36 PM) Half the point of the Rays dealing Crawford though is that they have their fair share of talented OF's already. Elijah Dukes and Delmon Young aren't exactly choir boys though either. With the trouble those two have had, I wouldn't be completely surprised if they were available for the right price.

QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 12:50 PM) last year he gave up a ton of hits, but he also induced the most double plays becuase his sinker actually sank] this year his sinker is flat and has become a flyball pitcher. not good for a sinkerballer His horrible control is killing him as well Silva had 9 friggin walks in 170 or so innings last year. He has 7 more than that this year(a whopping 16 walks in 100.1 IP) More of a tidbit than actual reason.

QUOTE(flbob @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 08:56 PM) ohmygd, b*ston's almost as bad as new york! and the packers? as bad as the viqueens (i won't say anything bad about da bears). i think there's a common theme in the midwest, eh? Haha, ya I think so. Must be somethin' in the wheat QUOTE(MichiganBorn @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 07:56 AM) And I was rooting for the White Sox last year because it was alot of fun to watch and I follow the idea that you have a favorite team, but if your team isn't in the playoffs you root for a team from the same division/conference. The only time I break that is when Ohio State is in a bowl game. Hell, I know what you're talking about. I was rooting my ass off for the Twins in '03 and '04 in the playoffs. I was rooting for the Marlins in '03(playing the Cubs probably helped with that), I was rooting for the Angels in 02, etc. If the White Sox were to somehow not make the playoffs(and with the talent on this team, that would be horrendous), I'd probably be rooting for the Tigers. You've been a pain in our ass all year long, but Leyland has really grown on me this year(I had no idea he was as good of a manager as he is), and the youth and hunger in that team is just friggin' awesome. That, and I tend to root for AL Central or AL teams period in the playoffs(unless it's New York or Boston of course)

Josh Fields has been discussed as moving to LF in the past. By trading Crawford, the DRays would be opening up a hole in LF. Please tell me I'm not the only one that sees the correlation. Any trade for Crawford is coming in the offseason, not this season...you want to send a message to the club, you don't want to completely rip this team apart.
-
Hopefully this brings down the value of middle relievers a little bit. In all his mediocrity, he's still a fairly dependable reliever.
-
QUOTE(MichiganBorn @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 08:08 PM) Ha Thanks. We'll see about next series. I'll stick around as long as I don't get picked on too much. Don't get me wrong I've still got some homer in me. But I like watching competitive sports and if my teams are involved all the better. There are only a few teams I like to watch get dominated In no order 1) Yankees 2) Avalanche 3) Lakers 4) Cowboys 5) Mets 6) Ohio State I think you and I will get along just great. I don't care about hockey, don't have a team in college football, hate the Yanks, hate the Mets, hate the Boys, hate the Lakers. If you tell me that you hate Boston oriented teams, and you hate the Packers, than you are basically a White Sox fan that, errrrr, roots...for...uhhhhhh, the Tigers?

QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 08:00 PM) well, Koskie was offered to the Twins in the offseason, the Jays would of paid his salary and the Twins would just have to had sent a medicore AA player in return (this was right after they signed Glaus) Terry Ryan wanted to give Tony Batista a chance and prove he was worth that $1 mil contract, so he declined. worst non-move of the season agreed With Koskie, you know you are going to get power, you're going to get great defense, and you're guaranteed atleast 1 DL stint a year. Tony Batisita just sucks
-
QUOTE(Hatchetman @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 02:49 PM) we could have used him and put mccarthy in the rotation. No...Wickman is mediocre
-
QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 01:31 PM) I would imagine the Twins would be looking at him if the price is right since they need a thirdbaseman dammit Jim, stop giving Ryan ideas. I'm just more surprised they didn't pick up a 3Bman from the Blue Jays earlier, but, meh, better late then never.

QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 06:50 PM) If Garcia starts throwing 91-94 again, he'll be good. But that's a big if and he hasn't shown that ability all year. I see no way the Phils would do that trade. They have scouts so they'll know what they're getting. They also realize how pisspoor the NL is going to be for about the next year or two. Leagues don't go from spiffty to great overnight. Freddy, with his 85-88 MPH fastball, would be a serviceable and durable starting pitcher in the NL, ballpark be damned, and serviceable starting pitching is at a premium(ask tightwad Beane why he spent $7 mill a year on Loaiza). The durability is great, and that's pretty much obvious. So, worst case scenario for Philly, they get a year and a half of serviceable starting from Garcia, and he's gone, with or without other compensation. Best case scenario, the guy wants a new, bloated contract after 2007, he starts throwing hard again, he gets his spiff together, and he's great for Philly, and depending upon how good the team is next year, they have either a horse down the stretch, or they have hella trade bait and Freddy is gone again. If they choose not to, they simply keep Gordon, or trade him for prospects, running the risk of them not panning out or becoming very good. For as good as he's been, Gordon is 38, and has 2 more years on his contract...he has value, but it is not as high as it should be for those two reasons. So due to that, I'm not sure how good of a prospect they will be able to get out of him...perhaps Gillick will play his chips well and can get a top prospect for him, such as Bavasi did for Seattle last year in trading Villone, and perhaps not. We'll find out in the next 11 days. EDIT: spiffty...haha. Sposed to say bad, or perhaps another word for bad
