QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 11:25 AM) Bassit is really the one that has to be protected. His stuff is MLB caliber and it's a lot easier to stash a pitcher. Wilkins might get plucked but I doubt it. No one is going to pick up Smith because he can barely catch. He's still a work in progress despite his age/level. I think an NL team would take Wilkins, perhaps the Marlins. They can stash him on the bench as a pinch hitter or give the guy a chance to win a starting job at 1B. They've had no problem doing that in the past with guys like De Aza and Uggla, so I don't see how that'd be any different.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 11:55 AM) We very easily could end up 28th in payroll next year (which is fitting, since that's where attendance is as well). You seriously expect the White Sox to spend absolutely no money at all this offseason? A team whose payroll was last below $65 million more than 10 years ago, will go into next year with a $48 million payroll? You have said and suggested some ridiculous s*** and this is right up there with it. AND QUIT WITH THIS ATTENDANCE BULLs*** AS IT HAS ABSOLUTELY NO CORRELATION BETWEEN PAYROLL AND SPENDING

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 10:50 AM) I feel sorry for red skin potatoes. Are they going to be renamed? Maybe, not to be offensive, the NFL team should just switch out the Indian for some potatoes on their emblem and everyone wins. I do think they should change the name. If a group of people are offended, they are offended, and it doesn't seem unreasonable they are offended. But to me, Chief Wahoo should be way more offensive. I agree 100% with this. QUOTE (Tmar @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 11:12 AM) Once again, if Indians called themselves redskins is it really offensive to them? "After O’Fallon’s 1821 council with the Sauks, the next recorded uses of redskin were in August 1821 at a treaty conference held at Chicago with representatives of the Ottawas, Chippewas, and Potawatomis (Kappler 1904–1941, 2: 198–201). There the lead speaker for the Potawatomis was the accomplished orator Metea (Meete-ay), a chief from the Wabash River (McKenney and Hall 1933, 2: 205212), who declared: “I am an Indian, a red-skin, and live by hunting and fishing, but my country is already too small” (Schoolcraft 1825: 342). And Topinabee (Topenebee), the Potawatomi principal chief, said: “My Father,—I am a red skin. I do not know how to read or write, but I never forget what is promised me” (Schoolcraft 1825: 347)." anthropology.si.edu/goddard/redskin.pdf Black people call each other the n-word too. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 10:14 AM) Forget about .250, I'd rather have the .225 Flowers with 18-22 homers than the .250ish Flowers with just 8-10. Except that we've seen that the Tyler Flowers that can hit 18-22 home runs is more like a .180-.200 hitter. I think the Sox will seek an upgrade, but they won't spend an absurd amount on one.

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 09:36 AM) Actually a reasonable amount of this is true. His xBABIP, i.e. what his BABIP should be given normal luck, is .332. He has put 201 balls in play this year, for 71 non-HR hits. Regressing for normal luck would give him a line of about .226/.286/.344 as opposed to his current line of .237/.297/.359. The problem is (apart from that not being very good), though xBABIP might show that he deserves a higher BABIP than normal, this is mainly because his line drive rate is higher, and line drive rates tend to regress to career average too. Tyler had LD% of 16.2%, 17.7% and 17.2% before this year's 23.3%. I'd imagine that LD% will look more like the former than the latter next year. One thing I will say though, is that I was using the lesser form of pitch framing, and having moved to the better one, Tyler actually rates very well (which would jive more with his knowledge of the area). There has been a distinct change in approach and philosophy for Tyler at the plate, which represents a talent change and shift. It's certainly possible that the line drive rate comes down, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see it remain in the 20% range either.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 07:31 AM) That's just stupid on both of their parts, especially knowing what a failed drug test does nowadays. As someone who has Bell as their RB1, I sure hope any punishment from the NFL is pushed until 2015 - which it very well may be given how long some of these type of offences take to fully process. NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR FANTASY TEAM /first one! (and it's funny, cuz I was going to come on here and make a stupid, jokey post about how I can't wait for my first fantasy draft on the 26th) -
To try and put out the fire before it starts, Flowers' current BABIP of .353 isn't entirely unreasonable - 72.8% of the balls he's putting in play right now are line drives or ground balls, which are your highest percentage of balls in play that will result in base hits. It may be a little high, but it's not outrageous. I also think there's probably some room for organic growth within his line - his power numbers are down this year and while some of that may be conscious effort, some of it could also improve as he continues to get more experience. He does have an fWAR of 1.2 this year (for what that's worth to people). Among catchers with 350 plate appearances, that number puts him right in line with offseason darlings Jason Castro (1.5 fWAR), Brian McCann (1.2), and Dioner Navarro (1.1), as well as Alex Avila (1.5). Frankly, I have no problem with what Tyler has done this year. There are better catchers, but I agree with Hahn that he could absolutely be the starting catcher on a winning team. (this also marks the 2nd straight season I was completely wrong about Flowers)

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 10:57 PM) I fully expect the Sox to finish below Minnesota which means last place 2 years in a row. That is unacceptable. If the Sox finish last again next year, I'd clean house. No more Kenny. No more Hahn. And beg Jerry to sell. You can't tell me the Sox should be finishing fricking last 3 straight years. And what's more, nobody is the front office is calling it a rebuild, right? They are denying we are rebuilding. Last place must be a thing of the past starting next year! oh hey look guys, greg's overreacting again while looking at things in a vacuum QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 11:11 PM) Williams is the one who really scouted Abreu hard and pushed for his signing. As I recall, Reinsdorf is the one who really pushed the envelope in signing Abreu. Seems to me Williams really didn't want to go above like $45-50 million, and Jerry said "if this guy is as good as you say, we may as well spend as much as we have to [sic]"

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 03:42 PM) Gonzalez is really the only one maybe Young to a lesser extent. Masset was ok. Hudson only pitched 50 or so after the Sox and Escobar has played in only about 180 with an OPS of 668. That really isn't much compared to all the moves. Young was a very good, valueable player in the first few years of his career. He's fallen off the map offensively and may be nearing the end of the road simply because he's no longer an effective hitter, but if the Sox had him instead of Brian Anderson in 2006, they could have won the division (using pre-determined destiny and making assumptions and all that). Dan Hudson had a phenomenal year in 2011 but he's been quite injury prone since, requiring two Tommy Johns. In hindsight, that's not a horrendous trade, but it still wasn't a great one. Eduardo Escobar has hit fairly well this year and has gotten fairly good reviews defensively at SS (which was his biggest drawing point as a minor leaguer), so it's fair to assume that will remain solid as well. Like I said, I didn't mind giving him up, but having him in the system right now would have made the decision to move Ramirez a lot easier to justify. (and, to caulfield this post, had the kept Escobar, they may have gotten rid of Alexei sooner which may have influenced Abreu and he might be in Colorado right now instead of Chicago).

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 03:20 PM) I forgot the part about more than half the babies are born out of wedlock or to single mothers, and roughly 25% of the population (African-American and Hispanic-American) has about the same chance of graduating from university as ending up in prison. Meanwhile, countries like UAE, Bahrain and Qatar are making tremendous economic progress while American students slowly fall backwards to the rest of the developing world in the areas of math, science, physics and chemistry. American government can be summed up in one sentence: Citizens United with Koch Brothers leads to 14% approval rating for Congress and more time spent trying to undo Obamacare than solve any real problems in America. This post is absurd and LOL worthy.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) Dunn. Keppinger and Downs, to a lesser extent. Swisher. Javy. Edwin Jackson. Manny Ramirez. Liriano, Myers and Youkilis. Griffey, Jr. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 03:12 PM) Although none of the players that KW gave up for these guys have amounted to anything. I would say Gio Gonzalez, Chris Young, Dan Hudson, Eduardo Escobar, and Nick Masset all have amounted to something or another at one point in time.

A billion people died on the news tonight But not so many cried at the terrible sight Well mama said It's just make believe You can't believe everything you see So baby close your eyes to the lullabies On the news tonight Who's the one to decide that it would be alright To put the music behind the news tonight Well mama said You can't believe everything you hear The diagetic world is so unclear So baby close your ears On the news tonight On the news tonight The unobtrusive tones on the news tonight And mama said Why don't the newscasters cry when they read about people who die? At least they could be decent enough to put just a tear in their eyes Mama said It's just make believe You cant believe everything you see So baby close your eyes to the lullabies On the news tonight --- You could also be the one posting lyrics to a Jack Johnson song. That would be way worse.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 12:26 PM) Well i'm Irish, or at least mostly Irish, and I find it offensive. I'm sure I can drum up about 5% of Irish people to agree with me. So it should be changed. Rabble, rabble, rabble. Then the first step would be to gather signatures from these other people and speak to university officials and laying out your points as to why you find the name Fighting Irish offensive and unacceptable. Maybe you can forward it on to a few other websites and display your outrage over the topic. People that are outspoken and are intelligent in doing so tend to get listened to. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 12:07 PM) Pssh, i'm in agreement with Ditka. This entire issue got a bunch of PC liberals on a witch hunt, that's the only reason this became an off season scandal. That doesn't make the term more or less derogatory, but it's 100% the truth. I also laugh at Mully and Hanley and the other ass clowns out there who are taking the "high road" and deciding they won't use the term (while simultaneously arguing that "Fighting Irish" isn't derogatory because it refers to having a fighting spirit...despite the f***ing mascot being a leprechaun with his f'n fists in the air). f*** that. Where were you last year? Or the year before? Or for the last 80 years or whatever. What, it just suddenly became a terrible word this summer when it became a media story? GMAFB. Words change meaning over time, for good and bad. Just because a word used to be derogatory doesn't mean it's always derogatory. No one identifies Washington Redskins with native americans. It's all about the football team. http://www.und.com/trads/nd-m-fb-name.html So, based on that, if the Irish got together and found that it was offensive to them, I think they'd have a legitimate case. Instead, I think, given the Irish heritage of the school, they view it as a source of pride anymore. I'm not Irish nor an alum of ND nor anything related to ND nor a citizen of Indiana, so I have no horse in that race. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 11:12 AM) If they keep Danks in the rotation, then they're just a different version of the Cubs sitting on the Edwin Jackson contract That's a hell of an idea. Swap Danks and Jackson. The Sox can pick up the difference or they can still pay Jackson $13 million while the Cubs pay Danks $11 mill (which, if you figure the Danks contract is a sunk cost anyways, is the same thing as DFA'ing Danks and taking a 2 year, $4 million flyer on Jackson). Frankly, Jackson had the most success of his career pitching for the Sox under Cooper, and his stuff is still solid. If he flops in the rotation, you can then try him out of the bullpen as a middle reliever and set up guy, as he's always had the stuff to succeed in that role too. The Cubs want out of that contract and Danks seems to be more of an NL pitcher at this point anyways where he can pitch around guys a little easier. Just an idea.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 11:01 AM) This is by far the most important factor people are ignoring. We need to build around these guys RIGHT NOW, as Sale or Quintana could down at any point in time. Wasting the surplus value these players are currently providing is the dumbest thing we could do. It blows my mind people are so concerned about draft picks and the lack of surplus value free agents will provide. We have $46M in payroll commitments for next year and yet some posters are against spending anything of significance in free agency. Having financial flexibility is great, but it's damn near worthless if you're afraid to spend it. It is nice to pick up guys like Spencer Adams, but I am in some agreement here. It obviously has to be worthwhile, but I don't have problems giving up draft picks. The key part of this is the worthwhile thing.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) Its totally the truth. But if overall native americans DO find it derogatory, the precedent is there to change it. Right. When I heard the term "Fighting Sioux," I didn't think of Native Americans or the Great Sioux War or anything along those lines. I related it to UND Hockey (and their other sports). It was still changed. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) Because wouldn't think JR would like to go all the way down to 1.4-1.5 million in attendance and decline for a 9th season in a row and waste another year of Sale and Abreu together, but if they're still content with profitability at this payroll level, more power to them. Actually, I do not know exactly what it takes for Brooks Boyer to lose his job and for the White Sox to try another approach, because it's going to be challenging to emptier stadiums than US Cellular in September. Even the idea of Rodon coming up quickly is going to be met with a shrug by fans unless he debuts and sustains an ace level of performance instead of profiling somewhat like, say, Kip Wells. Why do you insist on bringing up attendance? It's like always the crux of your argument over and over and it's never, ever been that big of a deal. Reinsdorf's goal is to win, and it's quite clear that Hahn has a long term plan that the Sox ownership is comfortable with to maintain winning long term, but that involves taking a few lumps in the short term. When the Sox win - and do so consistently - they draw. This has been proven.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 09:20 AM) I see no scenario underwhich MLB lets Mark Cuban buy a baseball team. I don't either. It would be the ultimate irony if he did buy the Sox after Reinsdorf passes away though. I also don't see any situation in which Cuban would move a team. He wants to own a baseball team, but he has never indicated that he'd move them. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 06:27 AM) That's being pretty darned optimistic, as Garland was one of the Top 20-30 prospects in all of baseball as an 18-19 year old. If you told me he was going to be in the 2015 starting rotation, I would quickly say it's another 76-86 rebuilding year, unless they've also addressed the significant holes in the line-up and bullpen. Even then, a rotation of Sale/Quintana/Rodon with Beck/Noesi/Danks fighting for the 4th and 5th spots is at least a year away, optimistically. If we were willing to get rid of Danks' contract and/or add another veteran to the back end for stability, I would be a bit more optimistic, as the assumption now has to be they're going to want no part of a FA pitcher over a 2-3 contract. Jon Garland's optimistic ranking was also based on the projections that his stuff would continue to improve and he'd start throwing a power sinker and turn into a ground ball and strike out machine, ala Kevin Brown. He never got to that point. If Beck comes up and is a league average pitcher, I'll be quite happy.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 03:52 PM) I find it odd people would chose their team based on geography. That could be that most younger generation NFL fans are not like that. No way could I be a Cub fan. So far I haven't embraced the Diamondbacks. I love going to their stadium. I may be one of the few that enjoy a baseball game with no emotional interest. I can see a downside of the Sox leaving. That community is so much improved since they built the Cell. To me, there's no better sport to watch live than baseball. I haven't seen football or hockey at the highest level, but have seen college and amateur hockey (NAHL), and I've also seen an NBA and several MLB games. There's just something really fun, special, and relaxing about watching baseball live. On the contrary, I think it's a lot harder to watch the games on TV if there's no vested interest. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 02:19 PM) I predict a 27 pitch perfect game from Rodon tonight. Forget him as a prospect, that K-rate will not work at the MLB level.
