  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 11:37 AM) If Dunn is as valuable as his metrics would say in 2012/13/14, why has it been so impossible for Hahn to trade him? And has Adam been a run-producing bat this year? Not really. He barely has 50 RBI's, for someone paid quite handsomely to produce them. So if Adam Dunn hit .500/.650/.900 with 60 home runs, but no one got on base in front of him and he only have 60 RBIs, you would say he is not a run producer. That is the logic you are using when using RBI to define "run-producer." If you had the preseason odds for who was more likely to win the World Series and the choices were Padres, Cubs, or Twins, your answer would be "who gives a s***, it isn't going to happen so why bother?" I mean, we could be talking like 100:1 versus 150:1 versus 200:1 and no matter how you slice it, none of them are likely.
  2. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 11:09 AM) Micah was speculated to go to the outfield due to the log jam in the MI, his under average defense at second and yes his speed could help him become a solid outfielder if he can get good reads and jumps which he's plenty young enough to learn. Take a look at Viciedo and DeAza, they are a joke out there. I see no reason why Micah could not be better than both with a little time and patience for him to learn LF. His weak arm could hurt the Sox more at 2B than LF as its going to be used more often at 2B and be a weakness on DP's as well. Moving Micah to the outfield makes too much sense. His weak arm is going to hurt the Sox a lot less at 2B than in LF because he actually has to make long throws from the left field corner. Frankly, this post makes a lot more sense when you're talking about Semien. They will get his bat into the lineup wherever they can and he's shown the ability to handle it. When you have players who seem pretty confined to their positions - Johnson at 2B, Sanchez between 2B and SS, Gillaspie at 3B - you find the one who can move and you do just that. If Semien comes up and plays full time, I don't think anyone's going to care where he plays. If he plays a full season's worth of games next year, but 90 come in LF, 5 in CF, 8 in RF, 27 at 3B, 6 at SS, and 11 at 2B, is anyone going to be upset? But, if Semien is the one who proves he can handle the outfield over the others, then he's the one who's going to do that role.
  3. QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 11:12 AM) Might this help for a last gasp attempt at moving Dunn? http://sports.yahoo.com/news/brewers-claim...-150040339.html We can hope, I guess. 3 more days until his value is officially nada. It would make sense. A lot of sense. Or less than I thought, because Reynolds has been very bad against lefties this year. Maybe they think he can figure it out, but who knows.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 11:15 AM) We finally have a prospect that the Marlins would want. Rodon. Go from there. Then the trade is getting tabled until next July, when Rodon for Stanton straight up makes sense (crosses fingers).
  5. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 11:07 AM) Danish, Hawkins, Anderson & Jared Mitchell. 3 1/2 first-rounders; does that get Stanton? I feel like Anderson and Danish in a package should get us to any discussion table. Jared Mitchell has 0 value right now. Danish, Montas, Anderson, and Garcia might get you on the discussion table.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 10:53 AM) That's just a marginal improvement over two positions, and when you consider the allocation of resources (let's say $30 million minimum for Headley, if not $40-50), it doesn't make a whole lotta sense. Especially when a lot of posters are already expecting a down/correction year from Conor, and we just don't know the effect of being a full-time DH would have on him or any younger player. If you're going to do that, you should really double down and spend another $20-30 million on an MVP caliber player in Sandoval (or even Hanley Ramirez) and try to get him straightened out offensively when paired with the strength and conditioning guys/Hermie. Or I'd rather spend the money you're spending on Headley for Billy Butler at DH, because I tend to think he's a much better bet for the next three seasons at USCF putting up some monster years. Chase at this point in his career just isn't a reliable middle-of-the-order hitter. As it stands right now, we don't have anyone that you can confidently put there with Abreu, not even Avisail. So when someone mentioned Headley and I just said that he'd play 3B instead of DH over Gillaspie because he's a better defensive player, we get Caulfield mentioning that Sandoval is an MVP caliber player. This has gone full blown crazy. Sandoval: .285/.326/.429, .328 wOBA, 115 wRC+ - that's an MVP caliber player? No. He's legitimately had 2 seasons where he put up All-Star level numbers, and that's it. Jose Abreu is putting up MVP caliber numbers this year. Sandoval has never really gotten close to those numbers.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) Why? Conor's had a Top 30-40 (all of MLB) OPS (despite the lack of homers) for pretty much the entire season. What about Headley says he's going to rebound playing next year in the AL? Certainly not his statistics in NY, where he should be putting up at least a 750ish OPS. It makes no sense to bring in a guy that's going to get $8-10 million per year and already around that magical 30 year old mark where players now are declining without the PEDS to further their careers. Victor Martinez is one of the few exceptions that comes to mind. Headley would play 3B, Gillaspie would DH. Headley is better defensive player than Gillaspie. I also didn't suggest it, rather just stating that if he were brought in, he'd be the one to play 3B. I wouldn't be opposed because he's a fairly good player, but I wouldn't vouch for it either.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) Every year closer he gets to that quarter of a billion dollar contract is going to knock a lot of his trade value down. The weird thing is that Stanton seems like the first guy they've ever seemingly contemplated keeping on a big contract, but I don't know that he wants to re-sign due to how they've treated their players in the past. It's hard to sign a long-term deal and have faith in ownership when they've shown absolutely 0 loyalty in the past. And, if he doesn't re-sign, then they've dug their own grave. I think they can keep him next year and deal him following the season and still get a fantastic return so long as the acquiring team has a chance to re-sign him, but it will still likely be less than the return they get if they deal him this year.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 09:45 AM) I wonder how many times the Sox have called the Marlins about him? One million times
  10. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 09:20 AM) Of the three he is the worst defensively, not that he cannot improve. He is also the least effective base stealer (66%) of the three despite having all that speed. If he doesn't learn to take good care of those legs he will be the utility player for the Sox while cheering on the Sanchez/ Semien double play combo. Just because Merkin has proclaimed Micah the 2B next year doesn't mean squat really. I think too many people are getting caught up in Merkin's hype on Johnson. Pound for pound, IMO, Sanchez and Semien both are better prospects than Johnson and younger as well. Micah Johnson has seemingly dealt with hamstring issues all year and has been a bit banged up. I'm not reading too much into his SB% yet, especially when the previous year he went 84 for 110 in stolen base attempts. He's not Billy Hamilton, but just based on the reports and his career numbers, I feel that I can safely assure that, given health, Johnson will easily be the MOST effective base stealer.
  11. QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 09:19 AM) Where do you think they will target? I can't see it in the IF with the prospects they have. CF and RF seem to be locked into Eaton and Garcia. The only postion would be LF. Catcher and DH. Catcher is not required, but I think it's something they'll definitely look at upgrading. I also think they'll look to add at least one bat. Headley was mentioned, and I think you could see that - bring in a guy who is a better defender than the Sox currently have at a position, say RF or 3B, and you can use that current starter as a DH and at the position on the opposite side of the field. While we're talking about the offseason, I'd just like to mention that I am very curious to see what happens with Stanton.
  12. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 09:19 AM) Only person I can think of is Chase Headley to DH, but I almost feel like the Sox may opt for cheap and give Wilkins a shot while using the extra bench spot to rotate in Micah Johnson (who if all goes right would be the 2B, with Sanchez as the utility and Semien in LF). I think September might answer a lot of our questions. Headley would definitely play 3B over Gillaspie. I don't know that they will look towards the free agent market. The last two traditional free agents (6+ years of service time, contract expired) the Sox have brought in to be full time players on offense were Adam Dunn and Jeff Keppinger. Even when guys were available, they've stayed away from that route. Instead, they've brought players in via waivers and trade. I don't see why that would change.
  13. Tsuyoshi Wada is 33. He's not apart of the future. QUOTE (ron883 @ Aug 28, 2014 -> 07:55 AM) The homerism in this thread is ridiculous lmao. Why? The Sox have 3 legitimate top of the rotation pitchers. The Cubs have maybe one in Arrieta and I think you need to see him continue to pitch well into next year, as he's been a guy who was not very good up until this year. I don't doubt he can continue it, just that he needs to do it again. It's amazing that he's already 28 and has just under 4 years of service time. If you want to talk about who has more talent and bigger name prospects, it's hard to deny the Cubs in that category, but given that the Sox have their top 3 rotation spots filled out for seemingly the next 6 years (plus another guy in Noesi who can be a 1-2 WAR back end starter) with guys like Abreu, Gillaspie, Eaton, and Garcia already apart of the core and guys like Semien, Sanchez, Rondon, Johnson, and a few others here and there, it would seem the Sox will be able to fill out the rest of their roster a lot easier than the Cubs.
  14. QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Aug 15, 2014 -> 04:57 PM) This article made for a good toilet read. Thanks for posting. I love it when you analyze.
  15. Guess I will have to get it eventually. Don't have it yet, but will shortly. I will be playing Madden online via PS4 too.
  16. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 12:25 PM) Nice hindsight, guys. It was well worth a buck in an auction, or a 10th and 11th round pick. No question. Hard to "waste" an 11th round pick considering everything else that's there. I didn't mean that I didn't want him or that I'm blaming anybody else for taking him. I stated in this thread that I was looking to draft him around that time frame and someone else picked him before I could. I got Dwayne Bowe and Justin Hunter with my 9th and 10th round swing picks, two guys who I think have the possibility to be WR2s and, had Gordon been there for my 11th round pick, I was going to take him. I've never said otherwise, but yes, in hindsight, I'm glad someone else took him.
  17. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-footba...-wr-josh-gordon NFL upholds 1 year suspension. Glad someone else drafted him.
  18. Holy cow he got a lot of that ball.
  19. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 07:47 AM) "I would go 0-30 before I would go 0-9. 0-9 means you beat yourself, you psyched yourself out of the game." - Kobe Bryant "'You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.' -Wayne Gretzky" -Michael Scott
  20. This season goes from success to failure when they trade Jose Abreu.
  21. Dropped Tim Wright for Jordan Matthews. QUOTE (Tmar @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 09:42 PM) Ouch, I hope that was only a mock draft I hope you are only a mock draft

  23. I just like how much we're talking about Freddy Jackson
  24. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) They really don't. The spot gets very limited playing time. If you want one of your better minor leaguers there, you are basically wasting a year of development. I initially thought it ultimately cost Jordan Danks a spot, but he did get some time with injuries earlier and his play wound up costing him a spot. Then they could have provided value to the future of the team through trade. I think the Sox were justified in keeping those guys, but it's obviously bitten them in the ass (as pretty much every short-term signing they made this offseason has). The Sox luck with that compared to the Cubs lately has been ridiculous.
  25. I'm sure the story is "Josh Shaw got drunk, was dared to jump from the balcony, did it, and sprained both of his ankles." It's like the time I got drunk and ate s*** and had a huge scab on the left side of my face. I went to one of my dad's work functions (which is the parent company of the company I work for), and people asked me about it. My story was that I was frisbee golfing, was way in front of my friends, and when I turned around to look to see where they were, one of them jumped on my back and tripped me and skidded my face across the ground. One guy I told that to (who is now the president of the company I work for) said "Looks like you got drunk and fell down." Nailed it.
