August 28, 201411 yr I get the feeling this is a silly conversation to have since the Sox core is already starting to be locked in long term and the Cubs core is still very fluid. Probably 1 or 2 of those guys moved this offseason, in addition to a large expenditure of money. Lets check back in a year or so mmkay?

August 28, 201411 yr They can go out and buy it...but the lack of pitching for the cubs core is a huge ?. So by default I'll take the sox. I like the cubs projections...but sox have more proven core players.
August 28, 201411 yr Both are gonna be good in a few years. Arrieta should be added to the list. One thing Cubs have done is put together a solid bullpen, thanks in part due to getting Ramirez and Strop in trades.

Kris Bryant is pretty much a can't miss prospect. Soler looks really freaking good. Addison Russel and Schwarber look like studs. Not to mention Castro and Baez... The team is freaking stacked with top tier talents. People need to take off their homer glasses.

The Sox are at least 3 deep with high quality arms in the rotation with not as great position players, but a set that are already producing in the majors.
August 28, 201411 yr Here's the thing. If you look at it on a player by player basis, it is harder to argue Cubs. First off, you have to cede pitching to the Sox. Period. Sale and Q are already here, and the Cubs have nothing that will even come close. When Smarj was here, at least you could argue that he ranks somewhere in between Q and Sale. Now? No. Then the Sox have Rodon on the farm, with a ceiling as a pitcher, that is just as high as any hitter the Cubs have. Then if you go over to hitters, the Sox have Abreu, who is in the majors, and hitting like an MVP already. At best, you MIGHT have one of their hitters end up being as good as Abreu. Maybe. Avi probably ranks towards the end of the Cubs big four hitters in terms of ceiling. When you put the package together of what the Sox have here already, and the HUGE advantage they have in cheap pitching, I'm not sure you can say the Cubs have the edge.
August 28, 201411 yr Right now the white sox have easily the best two on the list, with sale being a top pitcher in the league and abreu being a beast. After that the cubs have more talent on paper. While they may have a few soon to be all stars on the list, the lack of pitching really does hurt them a little. If the cubs didnt finish strong last year they would have had the third pick and if they got rodon i would easily give it to them, however that didn't happen. I really want to say its almost a tie, however since i know i am biased towards the white sox, i have to give the cubs a slight edge.

Don't you think Hahn is going to add at least 1 more young, MLB-ready core piece this offseason? +1 more for the sox soon. We have the best pitcher and hitter in the game, arguably. Cubs have what?
August 28, 201411 yr Did Rizzo die? People seem to forget he is a legit hitter who is in the majors... He is a legit lefty hitter. Close to the value Abreu brings while on a dirt cheap contract. Castro has a cheap contract. Another player being completely ignored is Arrieta. Soler, Baez, Bryant, Russell, Schwarber, Alcantara... Cubs talent is just filthy. They have tons of cost controller talent. Baez and Soler have low bust probably as far as prospects go. I expect at least one to be a star.

I think 2 of those 3 could turn out to be quality starters, and all should be very controllable for the foreseeable future. God forbids if they are able to turn Jacob Turner around. Cubs also have a closer who has a chance to be electric in Hector Rondon, who throw 98 mph and has been dominant for the past two months. At the end of the day, I think in terms of potential, it's definitely the Cubs. But potential is a dangerous word in sports. The Sox's "core" is more proven at this point
