QUOTE (JoshPR @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) Your right. I was confused, thanks for clearing that up I think you were getting at that, just wanted to clarify that it's not against the rules that a player be put back on waivers, just that most of the time, they aren't.
-
QUOTE (JoshPR @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 02:54 PM) Once a player is pulled back he can't go on waivers again He can go back on waivers, but he is then put on irrevocable waivers and can no longer be pulled back. If it's a particularly good player, you do not want to lose them for nothing, so you will not see that happen.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 02:28 PM) I am 99.9999% sure both of these cannot be true. LOL I will take my lashings, please. It's flawed because there is no perfect statistic and no statistic will tell you everything, but it is not flawed because it tells you exactly what it's supposed to. Perfect justification.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) I'm a little disappointed that WE didn't claim him... I mean I get that you don't want to send the message that you're abandoning your "plan," but it seems like the tire fire that is our bullpen should be pretty comfortable with the notion that their jobs are not safe. I am too, but I think they want to see if Surkamp can bring anything, and then maybe Snodgress in September. If you bring in Thornton, and he goes back to being a gas can, then you're on the hook for $3.5 mill and you still have no idea what you have for left handed options out of the pen. Even if he gave up a homer to Parmelee, I wasn't put off by Surkamp on the mound. He looks like he had a plan of attack, you just hope that maybe he can add a couple MPH if he works out of the bullpen full time.

UZR says Beltre's defense is worsening a bit. The guy is 35 years old and has been in the majors since he was 19. Does it surprise anyone that his body might be breaking down at this point?

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 01:49 PM) I was surprised to see Adolfo nearly cracking the top ten after just starting his professional career I think we are collectively drinking the Kool-Aid and buying into his high upside. He's 17 and already hitting for really good power. -
If you DFA a player, I do not believe you can recall them from the waiver wire. I believe they are put onto irrevocable waivers with the intention of re-assignment or release.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 01:19 PM) Why don't you tell me. The only thing I am blaming Hahn for is the Reed trade. I admitted I like the Beli signing. But many gang up on me and start making things up, how I think the Sox should max the payroll out... all I said was Hahn made a bad trade and keeping a $538k reliever would have had this team in contention. The trade has been bad, but I don't mind the intention. The Sox made a similar trade overall with Arizona several years ago, but with the sides swapped, when they traded Brandon Allen for Tony Pena. What's ironic about that is that Pena, in his half season with the Sox, put up comparable numbers to what Reed is putting up now. Williams was raked over the coals for that trade. Matt Davidson is still only 23 too, so while he's been very bad this year, there's some time for him to turn it around. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 01:40 PM) Yeah, but literally no one has made an argument that you should. Not the posters here, not the media pundits, not the general managers. I don't think anyone has ever suggested it. Dylan Axelrod had great FIPs in the minors, and no one was upset to see him go. There's a zillion different things to look at when evaluating relievers.
-
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 12:27 PM) I think he means in the 10-day window in which he is designated for assignment, reaching a deal with the Marlins to acquire him instead of risking that he make it to the Sox via waivers. I know, you still can't do that. You can't make trades after July 31st without a player passing through waivers.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 12:18 PM) Couldn't we technically work out a trade for him? I'd be all for that. Not after July 31st.

FutureSox Top 25 Prospects List - Midseason

For me, Bassitt missing most of the year is a red flag. Adam Lopez is a guy I've always really liked too, but he's been injured and I didn't even list him. I don't mind injuries as much for hitters as they can usually work their way back out of it, but it seems that one bad injury to a pitcher can break him. We'll have to see on Martinez. Adolfo obviously has a little more hype to him due to the signing bonus, but those decnet sized Latin American signings need to show a bit more before they get a lot of attention paid to them. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 11:34 AM) This is from four years ago on MLB Trade Rumors (ugh): So it's a case by case basis. That makes more sense and none of us were wrong. Today is a great victory for Soxtalk.

I have this from Purple Row, which is a Rockies blog. The article is a bit dated, so they may have changed it, but I don't know why this would no longer be accurate: http://www.purplerow.com/2009/2/19/762532/...tions-part-thre It doesn't make sense that a player could block a trade to a team (meaning a team wants his services and is willing to give up assets for him) but he couldn't block a waiver claim to a team (meaning a team wants his services and is willing to give up assets for him). There's no way the MLBPA would have allowed for something like that to happen.

Frankly, what's encouraging about this hot streak is that he's hitting for power. Soft singles to right field don't breed much confidence, but hitting bullets all over the field shows some indication that maybe something is taking root.

FutureSox Top 25 Prospects List - Midseason

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 10:56 AM) Rondon is an interesting one to rank due to the lack of offensive ability. I think prospects like him are usually underrated on lists like this, but I think his defensive ability alone males him the most likely Major Leaguer outside of the top 10. Even if he never becomes more than a replacement level hitter his glove will still allow him to be a positive contributor. Also, while the sample size in A+ is still too small to take any real value from, his 12.8 K% is very encouraging and if he can maintain a This perfectly sums up my feelings on Rondon. Frankly, the Sox had a shortstop 20 years ago that I think works as a good comparison. EDIt: Well maybe not perfectly, as Ozzie was a pretty good hitter in the minors. We'll call that an optimistic projection. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) I could have swore that when the Sox claimed Rios, his NTC didn't matter. (Not sure if the Sox were on it or not) The Sox weren't on it: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/compensa.../texas-rangers/

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) And where does Willie Bloomquist fit in? He's the LeBron James of baseball, fitting somewhere around 48 WAR per year.
-
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 10:14 AM) I don't think a NTC can block a waiver claim. I believe it can.
-
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 06:15 PM) I really like the idea of getting heyward , wonder what it would take More than the Sox would be willing to afford. He's a huge building block in that Atlanta outfield.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 09:48 AM) So, I get that the sensationalized media coverage is going over the top in an attempt to get readers to "fear read," and I get that we go through this sort of news cycle every year or so with some disease/virus that's going to cause a massive pandemic, but can someone explain why on Earth we're voluntarily bringing the Ebola virus to the United States? We're sending/have sent an incredibly advanced and expensive plane to pick up 2 people with the virus in order to bring them back here to treat/test them? Why not take them to some secluded place outside of the US that's not in the Atlanta area full of millions of people? Because how else are we going to try and bring "The Walking Dead" to fruition?
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 04:53 PM) It was a joke perhaps too inappropriate to explain lol. It's the internet, there's nothing too inappropriate for that. That's Rule 43.

I just want to point out that I don't think it's coincidental that he was hot coming out of Spring Training, while he was getting regular rest, and he went into the slump when he was playing 6 out of 7 games (or something similar). We were spoiled by AJ in that he could go out there everyday and put up good numbers, but most catchers cannot. I wouldn't mind seeing Nieto playing somewhere around 3 out of 10 games just to keep Flowers fresh. (I also want to point out that I don't have the actual numbers to match this, but that it merely seems to be the case)

QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 09:03 PM) Much has been said here recently about the 2014 pitching staff. It needs help next year. Free Agency will be discussed in off season, but you can't count on that as a savior for next year. Even though most of Sox better pitching prospects are in lower minors (W-S on down) there are several at Charlotte and Birminghame who will probably be given serious consideration sometime in 2015. Alphabetically, they include Bassitt, Beck, Blough, Bucciferro, Casey, Fuentes, Recchia, Snodgrass, Vance. The following roster pitchers probably don't figure to be in the mix Belisario, Guerra, Jones, Lindstrom, Paulino, Rienzo, Surkamp, Thompson. I didn't include Rodon, only because he is still at W-S. I don't know where I'm going with this, just looking for some positive comments on Sox pitching next year. There are a lot of pitchers in the second part of that list who do figure to be in the mix. Probably not Belisario, Jones (due to injury), Lindstrom, or Paulino, but the others will still be there. QUOTE (BaconOnAStick @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 01:23 AM) Erik Johnson is toast. Do yourselves a favor and give up on him. You don't just give up on guys with the numbers he put up in the minors leagues because he has a bad year. You figure out why he had a bad year and go from there.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 5, 2014 -> 08:07 AM) Unless RAJ's asking prices changed, it looks like none of these guy will move. They'll all get claimed though. You think they'll get claimed?
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 4, 2014 -> 06:04 PM) No. But I think a good trade partner could be Cincinnati. They have a decision to make because their team is getting old, and injury prone. I would try to acquire Jay Bruce and Sean Marshall from them. Good bye Tim Anderson, Courtney Hawkins, and Tyler Danish.
