QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 11:08 AM) DIRECTLY TO YOUR F*CKING BRAIN There's no defending this. The iPhone 5 is the Aaron Hernandez of smartphones. God that's awesome

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 03:30 PM) Sanchez was #64 on Fangraphs Top 100 for what it's worth, and his offense is dogs*** compared to Semien. He pretty much has to be the batting champion in order to be worthwhile. Semien is 22 in AA, Sanchez is 21 and in AAA. That's your primary difference.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 03:20 PM) Now that's a heck of a reason to give them away: because a manager who shouldn't be here doesn't like them. This kind of thing happens often, and a lot of times it won't be due to a player "sucking" but some sort of blatant disrespect towards the manager. If there is a rift in the clubhouse, overall team chemistry will degrade and tensions will be high, which in turn will lead to poor overall play and players that are pressing. To me, that fits Ramirez, Viciedo, and De Aza to a T. Maybe the Sox should considering bringing in a latino coach who the players will hold in high esteem to at least have someone within the clubhouse who is capable of relating with the latino players.

There's not a large sample size for Santiago as a starter. Here's what we have 16 GS 88.1 IP 2.85 ERA 1.19 WHIP 65 H (6.6 H/9) 10 HR (1 HR/9) 40 BB (4.1 BB/9) 102 K (10.4 K/9) Based on the peripherals, that ERA should probably be around 3.50, but he's had a lot of success. Here's hoping the Sox will keep him in the rotation. Also, I've come around to the idea of keeping 4 lefties in the rotation. It's not like any of them are really that similar, other than being left handed.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 02:47 PM) He's too risky an acquisition for a GM. Rios is the kind of player who can get a GM fired. My guess is we can't move him unless it's for 2 really really fringe prospects. Agreed bucket of suck? He's also the kind of guy that can get a GM and a manager an extension. Your glass isn't even half-empty, it's always empty. You talk about Jesse Crain like he's a year away from a senior discount when he's been one of the best relievers in the league. Alex Rios is a good player who, like everyone, wants this situation resolved, but Hahn has to get scouting reports and offers and evaluate and posture, and other teams have to do the same thing, and all the while Rios is twisting in the wind never knowing where he's going to be employed the following day. It's not easy for him right now, but he's handling it like a champ. Maybe relax and let it all play out.

QUOTE (thedoctor @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 01:45 PM) for most of last year i felt that this was a strength. it was something i expected out of him before i saw him manage a game, and when it happened i felt it was truly part of what/who he is. we haven't been as sharp in that respect this year. is that his fault, or a result of poorly skilled players getting more PT than they deserve because of roster attrition/underperformance? in my mind it's somewhat of a chicken/egg conundrum. I think it's fair to say that it's a little of both at this point. Ventura perhaps getting a little comfortable in his job and perhaps allowing for laziness/sloppiness initially, and by that point they'd dug themselves a hole too deep to dig out of. The players need to improve too though because they've been pitiful and you can only coach so much.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 02:13 PM) only need 10 percent more That's what the season is for. He'll be 110% come playoff time, if not 112%.

I think Samardzija is looking like a quality #3 pitcher with inconsistencies that will keep him from ever being a top flight starter. He's a good pitcher, but he has a tendency to leave balls over the heart of the plate. Vazquez was the same way, except that he couldn't handle pressure whatsoever. From what I have seen of Samardzija, he still appears to be the cliched "thrower" rather than "pitcher." That's the same way Vazquez was. I don't think that's going to change. That doesn't mean he can't dominate for stretches at a time, but I don't foresee him ever being a sub-3.00 ERA starter. I think what confuses the eye is that, when Samardzija looks good, he looks REALLY good, and when he looks bad, he still looks pretty good because his stuff is very good. There's not a lot of command with it though. He really doesn't spot his pitches well. With Quintana, when he looks good, you barely bat an eye because there's nothing flashy about his game and nothing about his stuff that pops at you - no table-dropping splitter or 11 MPH slower changeup or 12-6 curve. When he looks bad, he looks like a BP pitcher because his stuff flattens out and, at that point, he can be spotting well and guys will kill him. At the end of the day though, with everything considered, I would take Quintana on my staff over the course of a season before I would take Samardzija, and I don't doubt it for a second. I like 24 year old starters with improving stuff who have shown the ability to get guys out with command. On the other hand, 28 year old starters with flashy stuff and little command only do so much for me.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 08:18 PM) Ill go with Peavy shortly after his next outing I think teams will wait 2 outings before they would make a trade for Peavy. #1) See how he looks #2) See how he recovers Personally, I don't think Peavy is going to be traded. I'd be content being wrong, but I don't think it's going to happen.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 11:38 AM) I can't squint him higher than 7 -- I think Phegley has to be up there now just given that he has had a modicum of success at the majors. 1. Hawkins 2. Johnson 3. Thompson 4. Anderson 5. Phegley 6. Sanchez 7. Jacobs? Walker? Snodgress? Beck? Barnum? I think you can argue that Jacobs is higher than Sanchez, but you can make arguments for a lot of those guys too. I think it's safe saying he's top 12 or so.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 15, 2013 -> 11:29 AM) I would bet that Troncoso would have to be exposed to waivers to go down. He would, but it really wouldn't be a big loss if someone claimed him. Reminds me of when the Sox lost Jeff Gray a few years back.
-
Regarding Micah Johnson, I just want to reiterate one final time that most of this has to do with sample size. We have seen, on several occasions, guys put up big numbers at A or A+ and fizzle out rather quickly after that. I can pretty much single-handedly assure that if Johnson puts up a good second half and a reasonable AFL (and, barring injury, it seems there's little reason to keep him out of the AFL this year what with being allowed to send one or two prospects below AA to the AFL), he's probably going to be a top 5 prospect.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 10:01 PM) Good to see the old greg back. I can't believe this is the first time I've seen this joke made in connection with greg. Awesome, and such a great bit. Anyways, anybody upset with this return is crazy. Expecting any more or any less was going to be unrealistic.

Seems to me this case is going to be one of the times we are thankful this country has two systems in which they can prosecute another. There was not enough evidence to state that Zimmerman killed Martin in cold blood, and frankly, he was doing what he needed to ensure he was not killed, thus, they could not convict him criminally of this crime. But, had Zimmerman not gotten involved, Martin would still be alive, so there is absolutely a wrongful death involved here. I'm guessing the civil suit is going to be much stronger and much more likely to lead to a conviction. As has been mentioned, Zimmerman was found not guilty, which is not the same as innocent. We know he shot and killed Martin. Due to the level of guilt, if tried in a civil court, he very well could/should be found guilty and the Zimmerman family will owe a great deal of money to the Martin family. I don't feel that letting Zimmerman out would be the same as letting Jason Holmes out. This isn't a psychotic lunatic who is bound to kill again. I believe he was a vigilante who got in over his head and made a snap decision that cost another human being their life, and that is incredibly unfortuante. He should still be tried civilly, because there is absolutely some level of guilt here that should be dealt with.

QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 09:11 AM) Samardzija is a sick talent. You can't see that? I mean, there's not much more to be said. Aside from overrating players on your own team & underrating the opposition, most people posting in this thread are putting a lot of weight into three months worth of stats. Don't do that. It's not a particularly wise thing to do. I like you, because you puff out your bird chest when you post. This is f***ing absurd. Samardzija is in his age 28 season. Over the last two years, we have 47 starts and 298.2 IP worth of data on him, which is a pretty suitable sample size. 8.3 H/9 1.25 WHIP 1 HR/9 3 BB/9 9.3 K/9 3.92 ERA The peripherals are nice, but they are indicative of Ricky Nolasco or Javier Vazquez, pitchers who are clearly extremely talented pitchers but always underperform their peripherals due primarily to loss of command. They make mistakes, elevate pitches, and get hit. Now, if you want Javier Vazquez or Ricky Nolasco leading your staff, by all means.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 14, 2013 -> 11:44 PM) Sox blew it when they didn't hire Francona. Since we didn't get him, I'd be all for keeping Robin, cause there's really nobody impactful out there. If the Rays would fire Madden, or Madden would want to move to a big market, sure. But that's not happening. Maybe if LaRussa would do it. If we can't get LaRussa, I'd say keep Robin. I don't want any current coaches off teams like Martinez. I want a proven manager with our next hire. With our talent, it's really not going to matter for a few years, unless Tito is in charge. I think Francona would have this team in the hunt probably. If Robin decides to step down, I'd immediately promote Coop and let him try. Well this post is about the most absurd one I've seen in a while. They never interviewed Francona. Are you going to say they blew it when they didn't hire Leyland? Or Hurdle? How about when they didn't hire Eric Wedge? I'm really not sure why you are obsessed with Francona. This team be in a similar predicament with Francona as they would with Casey Stengel. It's just not a very good team. Next, Cooper just does not seem like he is manager's material. He's far more valuable coaching up the pitchers. It's why he's been in that position for like 10 years now. --- In the end, I think you give Ventura another year. For some reason, we seem to assume he's not doing the same thing he did last year, but maybe he is. At some point, you have to fault the players for not performing too. I'd give Ventura another year at this point.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 04:34 PM) And Joe Crede and Ventura both had incredibly quick first step reactions....absolutely doesn't mean either one of them had the range or overall athletic ability to play 2B. The same was/is true for Mark Teahen or Gillaspie or Morel. Now, if it's Brett Lawrie, or Brandon Inge, that's a different type of player. I have no idea where this came from. QUOTE (beautox @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 04:36 PM) If the Hahn green lights moving Alexei, I think we see the sox go forward with the experiment. If beckham can be league average to slightly below defensively at SS and he has turned the corner(two big ifs) then we need to lock him up. Also in a league that has Cabrera, Lowrie, Aybar and Peralta at the position, I think Beckham turns out ok. I'm saying I think Beckham will be Michael Young bad at SS. He has good instincts, but he lacks quickness and arm strength. He is ideally suited for 2B. -
Good, great, grand, wonderful, who gives a s***. Quintana is a very good pitcher. He's increased his velocity this year, and he's allowing fewer hits, striking out more, and walking fewer.
