Gavin Floyd to DL - Out 14-19 months for TJ Surgery

Also, this is my most memorable Gavin Floyd game. I remember being pissed that Ozzie didn't put a defensive replacement in for Swisher. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CH...200805060.shtml -

Never forget. -
The Sox have played Texas pretty tough the past few years. For whatever reason, they seem to match up well with them. My guess would be that it's because they are a team predicated on throwing fastballs while not doing a ton on the basepaths anymore, but it's hard to put a finger on a lot of this stuff.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:30 PM) Lord, I've never seen a player get such unfair treatment from the media. Jay Cutler is one of the toughest players I've ever seen play for the Bears. Seriously. And one of the coolest. He does that commercial for NFL Network, plus he sees the internet meme him (yes, that's meme as a verb), and he rolls with it

QUOTE (Jake @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) Hard for me to take the Royals seriously with the lack of production from Hosmer/Perez/Moustakas. I'm also not a believer in that rotation. It isn't out of the realm of possibility that they succeed, but I would need to see more to put my money on them. I'm actually am taking them seriously because they've been so successful with those 3 playing as poorly as they have. It's likely that they'll play at least a little better than they have. I don't believe in the rotation either, but we'll see. I don't think they're the best team in the Central, and I don't think they're a top 5 team in the AL, sooo I don't see playoffs for them.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 2, 2013 -> 03:37 PM) Haha, and some projecting shows we'll face all their starters besides Villanueva later this month. It really is too bad the Cubs got Villanueva. I have wanted him since he was with Milwaukee. I think he's just a great pitcher who keeps getting jerked around between the pen and the rotation. If you leave him in just one spot, he'd flourish in either place. EDIT: Not as good as I remembered, but still good

QUOTE (fathom @ May 2, 2013 -> 03:39 PM) I enjoy Braves fans banter. They hate watching young Teheran pitch and they also hate their 3rd base coach. Justin Upton only hitting solo homers and s***, what's up with that?

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 2, 2013 -> 03:06 PM) I got no problem with AJ watching that game on TV. s***, he coulda been racing back to the hotel to watch porn or race back to the hotel bar. He was in the clubhouse doing what he wanted to do after a game. I don't care about an incident like that. I just would prefer to have some real baseball players like AJ on my favorite team. Name players who can back it up. I know Ozzie wasn't happy about it. Ozzie basically called them POS's and said that they didn't care that they were falling out of the race. I think she Sox traded Thome and Contreras the next night.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:58 PM) Why? I put him in the class of "good pitcher" right now and after sitting out the rest of this season I think there's a very good chance he becomes the Jon Garland of the past many seasons. Just there. Certainly no better than a Guthrie or Chen. One of those types. First of all, I'm pretty sure Garland had a bum shoulder for a while. That's all moot because he's back in the majors and pitching effectively for Colorado. Jeremy Guthrie is a pretty damn good pitcher. Not counting this year, he's been pretty effective in 3 of the last 5 years, and he did seem to figure something out with KC last year, because he's been good to start the year this year as well (even if he's faced the Sox). Bruce Chen, for much of his career, has been a 5th/swingman type who is basically there to eat innings, and he's put up a career 4.57 ERA in the process. There's no reason Floyd couldn't come back and be the 4.00 ERA pitcher he was before. If he does need TJ, there's no one pitch in particular that caused it. It's a matter of teams harnessing his natural ability. That's not to say there's no possibility that his stuff won't be affected, but TJ just doesn't hurt stuff too much. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:55 PM) Yes sir! Nice reminder! Man, I wish we had more guys like AJ on the Sox team. Now and in past seasons. He's truly the only guy (I can think of) that has done noticeable things (like the dropped third strike against the Angels, running to first exactly when he did; purposely getting hit to get on base) just to help the team win. I'm sure there are others but with AJ, you can just see how much he wants to win. Who gives a f*** if he's an asshole in the clubhouse or in bars? There are plenty of those type guys in baseball. I think the Sox need more of those type guys. Forget assuming that they want to win. These guys, these men, who have played this game their entire careers, whose paychecks and happiness are determined by whether or not they win games, who only take 21 days off of going into work over 7-8 month period of time, who have spent their entire lives playing this game to reach the pinnacle. Forget assuming they want to win. WE WANT TO SEE THEM WANT TO WIN. As if you can see that someone wants to win. I saw Paul Konerko want to win in game 2 of the World Series in 2005, I saw Scott Podsednik want to win in game 2 of the World Series, I saw Freddy Garcia want to win in game 4, I saw Juan Uribe want to win in game 4. I saw Jim Thome and John Danks want to win in 2008. I SAW BRIAN f***ING ANDERSON want to win in 2008. No, when these guys lose, it's not because the other guys had more talent, or they were worn down, or plagued by injuries, or mismanaged, IT'S BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T SHOW THAT THEY WANTED TO WIN. (kinda like when AJ Pierzynski was watching the U of Florida football game after a game at Fenway park in 2009 in which the Sox got destroyed, a streak in which the Sox went like 2-8 and completely ruined their chances at winning a division title)

Gavin Floyd to DL - Out 14-19 months for TJ Surgery
witesoxfan replied to Balta1701's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (fathom @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:52 PM) Yep, he's still plenty young enough to return from a TJ surgery if he requires it. Heck, he might be better off in the long run if the elbow has been bugging him the last two years. Simply put, forearm/elbow problems are not career-threatening problems unless guys pitch through them and force the onus of the pitch onto the shoulder and destroy that in the process, while shoulder problems are sometimes death sentences for pitchers still. You can make the PED argument for Brandon Webb, but he was one of the best pitchers in the league, and then he hurts his shoulder and he can't even get back to pitching in games. And as you indicated, sometimes guys come back better. I recall Chris Carpenter going through TJ and he was incredible for the Cards the next season, while Francisco Liriano has never been the same pitcher since. -
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:27 PM) I'd try to sell him as much as possible, because if you take it home & break it then you have to come back and buy more, and that's good. Breaking puppies OTOH = bad. Also, with a china shop there is the insurance factor, a factor which I might try to capitalize on by allowing destructive people into the store on frequent occasion while the security cameras are rolling. This is something that BTW I am surprised the Sox are not capitalizing on re: Dunn's contract. If I'm JR I'm getting the best people out of the Pirates FO and having Dunn doing all kinds of crazy pre-game work-outs, like rock climbing, bungee jumping off the Fundamentals deck to increase flexibility to help him play 1B, etc. That way if he gets hurt you get some of that money back & you can plug another automatic out into the line-up, but instead of Dunn maybe it's someone from Triple A who Lillian really likes because he's a 29-year-old journeyman tearing the cover off the ball. Or something like that. Do you think doing macaroni pictures would also be included in crazy pre-game workouts, ie finger dexterity. I believe Dunn is a great macaroni picture maker when you can prevent him from eating the raw macaroni noodles.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:33 PM) I have a sneaky feeling we've heard the last of an effective Gavin Floyd. Man, how pitchers come and go in modern baseball. I have a strong feeling you're wrong -
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:16 PM) Well all I have to say to this is that if I owned a pet store and someone came in and said "I'm Alpha Dog from SoxTalk & I liked seeing AJ getting drilled" then I'd only let you in the door if I really needed the business & I'd watch you like a hawk around the puppies. What if it was a China shop?

At least guys aren't tearing labrums, like every single pitcher in the White Sox system in 2000 and 2001. *knocks on as much wood as possible* QUOTE (Cali @ May 2, 2013 -> 02:02 PM) There just had to be an article about how well the Sox stay healthy in the off-season didn't there? What a jinx that's become Jesus... Meh, if those articles don't happen every season, they should have for the last 11. The Sox are great about keeping players healthy.

Gavin Floyd to DL - Out 14-19 months for TJ Surgery

Gavin Floyd is about a 3rd starter. He's best used as a 4th starter. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 2, 2013 -> 10:42 AM) Why the hell is his death making national news? They had one hit! 20 years ago! Don't producers stop and think about covering the story when the ONLY footage they have is from the time the person was 13 years old? I got a Breaking News alert from CNN last night about him dying. Breaking news? I think you can just submit a regular article for that. It's really not a huge deal.

Gavin Floyd to DL - Out 14-19 months for TJ Surgery
witesoxfan replied to Balta1701's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This one hurts because I really felt the Sox should have dealt Floyd this offseason. I've always been a big fan of Floyd's talent, but I feel they could have added a little more to the team with his $9.5 freed up and any prospect they would have brought in would have been worth it. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 2, 2013 -> 09:35 AM) Someone actually said that? http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...t&p=2793825

Those are the stupidest numbers. In 2003, the Sox were down 7 games at the All-Star break and made up 10 on the Royals. The problem was that the Twins were 7.5 back and made up 14.5 games.

Beckham out 6-8 weeks with fractured hamate bone
witesoxfan replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Andrew @ May 2, 2013 -> 01:37 AM) Beckham sucks. Who cares if he's back? Doesn't help the team at all. Not sure why people even care - he's simply not very good at baseball. He's an incredibly talented baseball player who made it to the Majors one year after being drafted to play the game professionally. He is a very slick fielder and, if he can show anyting with the bat upon returning, can be a very valuable player. -
QUOTE (Hawkfan @ May 2, 2013 -> 09:32 AM) Why does everyone have to be a great guy? Whatever great guy means. I would imagine that half the players in baseball are not great guys, but jerks by most standards. Who gives a s***? AJ was awesome and loved by most sox fans, and now that we get to bean him it's hilarious, like tripping your best friend in front of a girl he likes. I wish more people were like AJ and didn't care about hurting someone's feelings so much. I'm all for being nice, but people are too sensitive these days. If that makes me a "meathead" fan, I'll take that over half the nerds on this site that have never played a game in their life. I enjoy this post
-
QUOTE (ptatc @ May 2, 2013 -> 09:06 AM) Yes I know this. I was working in the league when AJ was around and still have friends who work in baseball. I've never seen quotes from any player that were much better than neutral. It's usually like Reed said "i get along with him fine or I enjoyed throwing to him." I've never seen any say "what a great guy I really enjoy spending time with him." Jon Garland was quoted during the 2005 season as saying "he's a jerk but he's our jerk" paraphrasing of course. Wasn't he voted as the most disliked player in baseball in some poll recently? He was voted as the most disliked player in baseball when Barry Bonds was still in the league

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 2, 2013 -> 08:14 AM) Wow, the Royals were down 6-1 in the early going and rallied for the comeback in the middle innings. Impressive. Day game today against TB to hold onto the AL Central lead, 1/2 game up on the Tiggers though I won't mention standings because it doesn't become relevant until at least Memorial Day.
