2012-2013 MLB off season tracker thread

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 04:39 PM) With Wright and Davis (Olt might be an upgrade) on the corners I'd rather have JP and Gose or D'Arnaud and Gose if I was the Mets GM. I agree, plus I am going to take the prospects at scarce positions over the corner infield positions too. -
I still don't think that would be the case. It would likely just involve a suspension and some required rehab. If he couldn't piss clean after that, then perhaps.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 04:03 PM) Police saying that no officer responding to the incident fired their weapon. Unless there was a security guard or someone else there that was armed, that leaves only 1 way for him to have died, although they won't confirm that he killed himself without an autopsy. These situations leave a person as emotional wrecks. There are so many feelings I feel towards him, and I don't want to express them here.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 03:53 PM) I've never said do nothing. I've said to implement more restrictions. But i still maintain you're not going to stop these mass murders by doing it, and it's a nonstarter to talk about banning all guns like the initial post of this thread. I think we agree, I think we just have different tones in which we're writing. No matter how difficult you make it to get guns, people will find a way and gun violence will occur.
-
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 03:45 PM) Then let's start talking about it realistically. Enforcing a ban today isn't going to shore up all of the problems, and by the time gangs go through the hundreds of millions of guns out there, a secondary market will have popped up. I watched Revolution, I see how they still use guns even when there is no electricity to manufacture more! But doing nothing today will do nothing for today and nothing for tomorrow. You at least need to install some sort of increased barrier on the acquisition of handguns.
-
And the one point that should be added to that is that how much that number is decreased by depends upon the elasticity of the product. Increase the taxes on tobacco or alcohol all you want to, people, for the most part, will still buy it, BUT you will see some drop out of the market. Increase the price of tomatoes to $20/lb, and no one will ever eat tomoatoes except those people that absolutely must have tomatoes. I would imagine guns are somewhat inelastic but when the consequences of possessing them illegally (because you don't really "own" it if it's illegal) is extremely high, you will see even fewer people owning them.
-
Just as with drugs or cars or slaves or widgets, if you decrease the supply and increase the price, you are going to decrease the number of consumers who will demand the product. There is no perfect solution, but the simplest solution is simply making it harder to access handguns. Guns will be less frequent in gangs, and these shootings will be less frequent. They will still happen because of the sheer number of guns in the United States.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 03:24 PM) I think we're on the same page here, I was just devils-advocating it. HOW COULD YOU RABBLERABBLERABBLE But seriously, I do hate handguns.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 03:12 PM) Right, people with schzophrenia or some other disorder snap. A yearly required mental health screening would help, but what if it was dad's guns he got a hold of? Then it'll happen. But if Dad is such a poor father that he hasn't been seeking help to get his son help with some sort of disorder or hasn't taught him well enough the dangers of guns in the first place, Dad likely doesn't own this gun legally in the first place. Like I said, these sorts of behaviors don't appear overnight and most people don't snap without some sort of warning signs (though warning signs are hard to pick up and decipher at times). If you really run people through a gauntlet to allow handguns, you are severely going to limit the number of handguns in the United States and you will allow for both personal freedom and the ability to still own handguns if they so choose. (I admittedly hate handguns and I do get very uncomfortable around them, even when unloaded and handled by people who know what they're doing, and I don't plan on ever owning one)
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 02:56 PM) How can you say that with any sort of certainty? You have no idea if this guy just snapped today, grabbed his legally owned guns, and went shooting. Who randomly just "snaps" and starts shooting people? In like 99.9% of these cases, there is something not right with the person that breeds this reaction. That's what the yearly mental aptitude test would be for.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 02:41 PM) He failed drug tests in the minors. Does that count against Major League time under the new CBA? And will he actually be banned from the game if he fails another test? I wouldn't doubt the former, but I strongly doubt the latter.
-
QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 02:29 PM) I'm pretty sure Hamilton's on his last legs in the league as far as drug use goes. If he fails one of his bi weekly drug tests he's out of the league and the Angels won't be on the books for his salary. I highly, highly doubt this to be true. As far as I am aware, he has never tested positive for any sort of drug, and it takes like 4+ positive tests from recreational drugs to get a long, long term suspension. If MLB tried to kick him out, the MLBPA would fight right back.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 02:05 PM) That Ryan Lanza twitter just tweeted. Must not be him unless somebody has very successfully hacked the guy Or he talked to someone ahead of time to have them update it for him to throw people off.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 12:29 PM) @JoshElliottABC: Sources tell @ABC's @ChrisCuomo that one shooter was 24 years old, armed with four weapons, wearing a bulletproof vest. What in the f***
-
Seriously, I've been following this all morning waiting for an update, looked away for 20 minutes, and it went from 2 to 27. This is sickening.

Please take any further political discussions and comments to the Filibuster

QUOTE (Sox1 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 10:49 AM) I believe Quentin was traded on a sat. Yep, you're right.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 10:20 AM) well then they all are horses asses and i dont like them We agree!
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 09:56 AM) Oh i know, but with Lovie its like he doesnt want anyone else to play the game. He wants to mess with everyone, but get all indignant and angry when they play along and do their jobs. That's still every coach.
-
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 09:58 AM) I am making a prediction...the Sox will make a BIG move this week-end! It has been WAY too quiet! Weekend? When was the last time the Sox made a move on a weekend in the offseason?
-
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 09:12 AM) Nobody wants to play in KC. What FA would go play there unless they were grossly overpaid? Because Detroit is a much better destination
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 09:24 AM) Smyly takes over the 5th starter spot in that case or do they have someone else behind him? Sign Roger Clemens obviously
-
I am OK with Detroit paying him $16 million a year for the next 5 years.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2012 -> 08:05 AM) I would have said the same thing about them last year. What has happened to make them worse? Losing Brandon McCarthy? Stephen Drew? Lost McCarthy, lost Gomes (replaced by Chris Young), and I really doubt that pitchers and players who have been around forever and ever like Brandon Moss (.954 OPS) and Travis Blackley (3.86 ERA) will continue to find such consistent success. I also wonder about the effectiveness of Bartolo Colon going into next season as well. They have plenty of talent, but there are plenty more questions.
