  1. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 12:10 AM) Former Orioles SP Mike Flanagan found dead. Only 59. Initial report is that it was a suicide.
  2. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 12:21 AM) Goes to show you that baseball isn't a 'team' sport in the same manner that basketball and football is. It's a very individual-centric game wrapped up in a team concept. It really is. It's a collection of individual achievements and failures and they use it to play a game. There are very few instances of teamwork in the typical sense, and those are generally fielding.
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 03:28 PM) I just saw Lucy Pinders calender NSFW I can now die a happy man See, the government needs to stop worrying about how they are going to settle the debt crisis and instead figure out a way to make about 300 million of those.
  4. If the Cubs hired Rick Hahn, the zombie apocalypse would begin.
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 04:22 AM) This is true. And you're not going to get anything worthwhile for one month of Mark Buehrle. Without seeing the specific literature of the contract, I don't think anybody can be sure. There was a no-trade clause put in place during like years 8 and 9 of Buehrle's contract, but nothing beyond that, and anytime he was traded during those times, he was awarded an extra million per year left on his contract along with an additional $15 million guaranteed for the following season. That's all the general public knows. I saw reported this year, which could have simply been a reporter rehashing something from 2008 (and I personally believe that to be the case) that Buehrle did gain the extra year if he were to be traded. I don't believe that is true, and I think the reason Buehrle wanted the no-trade clause was because he did not want to be traded. -- These "trade everybody" threads really need to stop. Start them in October...I don't give a f***. They are pointless at this point in time. Honestly, what are you going to get for Mark Buehrle right now? Joe Smith? Sorry, he's relieving for the Indians. John Johnson? Sorry, the one you're looking for is dead. Steve Smith? Sorry, think the Dodgers are going to hold on to him...as well as the Panthers...and I suppose the Eagles...and I don't know why the Sox would want my old neighbor. At this point in time, you don't do a goddamn thing. Trading anybody is stupid, trading for anybody is stupid. Let this ship, with it's captain and co-captain, sink or swim on its own.
  6. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 01:23 AM) Then the Tigers would be putting in a claim to actually try and swing a trade, not do it as a block against other teams. And the White Sox would not trade him to the Tigers. Thus, a waiver claim block.
  7. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 24, 2011 -> 12:11 AM) I think it'd take a miracle for KW or Oz to return. The only way is if Jerry is so thankful about 05 he actually begs them to return. I know nothing about Jerry but he is old and I guess it's possible he's so thankful he got one WS title when a lot of his owner cronies will never win one, that he begs them to come back. In other words, it's possible he may not care. I think the odds are 95 percent to 5 percent that Ozz is off to Florida. And 99 percent to 1 percent that KW is gone as well. Bye bye. New manager? I want Lasorda. Tommy Lasorda is 83 years old and, in the last photo I saw of him, he was refined to a wheelchair. Atleast the White Sox would be progressive in making the first wheelchair ramp for a dugout.
  8. The Sox typically do not spend a lot on the draft. Do you think that, this year atleast, with the ultimate lack of spending, that it perhaps had to do with $127 million going towards the MLB roster? Because I certainly think so. With teams spending more and more on the draft all the time, the Sox will atleast need to spend $5 million. I envision the payroll being around $100-110 mill next year (and perhaps less depending on management's orders) with the Sox spending between $4-7 million on the draft. That's a hell of a lot more than they've done now. Beyond any of that, getting a player ranked between 100-150 in the supplemental round is usually better than not having said player, right?
  9. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:56 PM) DFA Frasor he is worthless ................Hawk say it like it is for once this team is horses*** quit the excuses every night! This is actually wrong. You simply decline his team option, offer him arbitration (which he almost certainly will not accept because he will receive some sort of multi-year offer) and receive a supplemental draft pick for him. The only 4 teams who have any second thoughts about signing him are the AL Central teams.
  10. Jesus f***ing Christ. Ozzie outmanaged himself this game by not doing a goddamn thing.
  11. It's amazing that Frasor wasn't pulled. Outside of like 2 ABs, he's been pitiful.
  12. This doesn't end well. Frasor should have been removed after Wells.
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:47 PM) He chases a ton of bad pitches that he rarely used to do. IIRC, he used to strike out a ton on called third strikes. His walk rate is down this year though compared to previous years, correct? Up from last year, down from career norm. 2nd lowest in a full season
  14. QUOTE (MAX @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:43 PM) The Hawk Soundboard. Someone make it. k, brb http://www.csnchicago.com/pages/soundboard done
  15. Frasor looked much better. Of course, it's easy to look good against the blacker, right handed version of Adam Dunn.
  16. Time for Gifts for Girls to run into another one.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:31 PM) The problem is that you plan for the extra inning game with the White Sox offense but then Ozzie seems to end up losing the game before we can get there as often and not....and now Konerko's bat isn't in the line-up, either. I don't know. No matter what you do, this team just doesn't have it in 2012 and hasn't all year. It's like 2007 and 2009 all over again. Personally, I would have gone with Sale in this situation, but thankfully it all worked out.
  18. QUOTE (MAX @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:26 PM) Jones actually had a worse year than Dunn in 08. He was more valuable though because he played CF. Vernon Wells has been just as bad offensively as Dunn, but his WAR is only -0.2 because he plays CF. Dunn is at -2.2 right now.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:19 PM) Here's where I will wonder why Sale or Thornton aren't being used when we simply can't afford to lose another game to the Tigers. vs lefties this year...who's who? .289/.313/.368/.682 .228/.307/.342/.649 .220/.278/.300/.578 They are Thornton, Ohman, and Sale in order. Difference is, Thornton and Sale hold righties below a .700 OPS too, so they can be used for an inning or two at a time. Righties are hitting at an .813 clip against Ohman. The game is tied, you need one lefty out, and you have enough other options to use against righties. Who do you want pitching in the 13th, given this information, Matt Thornton or Will Ohman?
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 11:17 PM) Is anyone willing to bet even $100 that Dunn hits 35 homers with 100 RBI's next year? I wouldn't count on 35 homers because power is down all over the league and I don't see any reason that won't continue next year. There might be 10 guys who hit 35 homers in the league all year, perhaps fewer. I'm pretty confident he'll be back next year. Call it blind faith, but I trust in Dunn.
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 09:59 PM) Kimbrel vs Tyler Colvin = most obvious strike out scenario of the season I've seen Are you sure that isn't (insert pitcher name) vs Adam Dunn?
  22. It's 9 outs early, but the only team with more extra inning losses in the American League than the White Sox is the Angels. Of course, the Sox are still the worst extra inning team based on winning percentage in the AL at (6-10 for a .375 winning percentage)
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 10:48 PM) Because the Tigers don't have a second starter if the playoffs were to start tomorrow, it'd probably be Scherzer. (They are five deep through 2014, so they could easily afford to just "rent" Buehrle for the final five weeks and post-season). The Yankees clearly don't have defined 2nd or 3rd starters. We're going to need to save every penny we can payroll-wise the next 2-3 seasons, might as well start now. It already began with Teahen and Jackson being shed. They're going to shed some next year, but they'll still have a lot of pieces in place (or rather, immovable contracts) for next year. I imagine whoever is in charge will sell off some pieces while trying to bring in others to fill holes to try and patch the team up as they go into rebuilding mode. I have a feeling that next year is going to be a lot like 2007 or 2008 with no real in between.
  24. QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 23, 2011 -> 10:58 PM) Id like to know how many times he has done this with more than 2 catchers on the roster I'd like to know how many times the Sox have had a backup catcher worthy of getting at bats. It's been few and far in between.
