  1. QUOTE (zirc @ Aug 14, 2011 -> 05:35 PM) http://www.fangraphs.com/graphsw.aspx?play...ayerid5=1013846 Fringe. So it's Jeter's fault that the Hall of Fame committee severely underrated both Trammell and Whitaker? Because Larkin will be in the Hall of Fame. http://www.fangraphs.com/graphsw.aspx?play...ayerid5=1010978 Ripken is clearly superior. I would say Jeter is superior to both Smith and Alomar, who were elected on their first (with 91.7% of the votes) and second times (with 90% of the votes) respectively. Considering all of the intangible aspects of Jeter's career - that he was a classy player, always tried his hardest, rarely complained, was a true gamer, won 5 World Series, was nicknamed "Mr. November" - he is absolutely a Hall of Famer.
  2. Figured I'd start a super-topic instead of having these burst into random threads throughout the board. Feel free to add your teams in here too. --- Anyways, just finished up a draft for a $50 league. I did OK but I missed out on a couple of the receivers I really wanted by about 4 picks (Ocho went 4 picks ahead of me, Manningham went 1). Standard scoring, H2H, non-PPR, 16 roster spots, 9 active (1 QB, 2 RB, 1 RB/WR, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 D/ST) QB - Rodgers, Fitzpatrick RB - Mendenhall, Blount, Greene, Tolbert, Ricky Williams WR - Harvin, Collie, Evans, Mike Thomas, Amendola TE - Gates, Celek D/ST - Jets K - Gostkowski The Collie pick was rushed - that was when both Ochocinco and Manningham went off the board - so I went with Evans as a potential sleeper candidate in Baltimore and Thomas as a somewhat safe pick 2 rounds later. Amendola was actually my last pick, somewhere around 184, so considering that I was relatively happy with it. I liked the Gates pick, though I wish I would have drafted a receiver with that pick and waited for Finley, who was available at my next selection, but I'm OK with that. I already have someone talking to me about wanting Shonn Greene and he has decent depth at receiver (Calvin Johnson, Dez Bryant, Stevie Johnson, Mario Manningham, and Braylon Edwards) and not a ton at RB (Turner, Best, Starks, Spiller, Jennings, and Dixon). My initial thought is to propose Mendenhall and Collie/Thomas/Evans for Best and Stevie Johnson/Bryant/Manningham, but I haven't done anything yet. soooooo...thoughts?
  3. I hate this team. Won or lose...don't do this halfass stuff.
  4. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 11, 2011 -> 10:42 AM) Except Jeff Keppinger's not exactly going to get us over the top. He can take Vizquel's spot and save us some money for 2012. That's about it. If you were expecting Tyler Kuhn to be a savior, then you were looking for gold in a gorilla's ass.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 05:31 PM) If we trade D1 and insist on a guy who's ready to contribute, it's not going to be a guy who can step in and make a huge difference. I think a lot of this is ambiguous. I'd suggest that Danks is a better pitcher than Shawn Marcum due to his durability and perhaps his handedness, but he's under control for one fewer year than Marcum, so I doubt you would get a Brett Lawrie straight up from a team (though it's certainly a possibility). Ready to contribute is a little unclear as well. John Danks himself probably wasn't "ready" to contribute his rookie year, given his 5.50 ERA, but a bWAR of 1.1 suggests that he was passable and, for that matter, good for a #5. And a huge difference is a relative term as well. If you're suggesting a guy who can come in and put up an .850 OPS his rookie year, then of course not. But if the Sox also end up dealing Quentin and moving Viciedo into RF, then picking up a guy who puts up a .750 OPS in left field (not entirely weighed down by SLG, of course) who can also play pretty well defensively is making a huge difference, relative to the current production coming out of LF, especially if said player has room to grow (which always means a 100 point drop in OPS the following season with the White Sox). There are ways to get what the team wants or needs. Looking at the current roster - even the one today - I wouldn't say there are holes in any particular position coming up next season but there are certainly question marks (and all I mean by that is that the Sox have players for every position, but Dunn and Rios can't do this again). The Sox just need to target the right players.
  6. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 02:10 PM) http://www.baseballamerica.com/chat/?1312987961 That's a great comparison.
  7. Enis did average 3.3 yards per carry in those years. Chester Taylor was at 2.4 in his lone year with the Bears. Oh, and Ced Bens was drafted 4th overall and, even though he was statistically better (and has been good with Cincinnati), he fumbled in the superbowl, fumbled the next season and got worse, and then got arrested like twice in the same month, forcing the Bears to release him from a hefty rookie contract.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 09:21 AM) Allen's like the poor man's Mark Grace, or the rich man's Ryan Sweeney (or however that goes). He better hit .320 or .330 every season because he's only going to give you 12-18 homers per year. That's not enough for 1B/DH. In some ways, he's reminiscent of Michael Morse. Long, athletic build. Doesn't really have a position (at the moment) where his bat's a "plus" tool. What on earth are you talking about? Allen's power is his best attribute and is going to be the reason he has a career in the majors at all. In 250 games at the AAA level, he hit 57 homers with an Iso of .266 and he showed excellent plate discipline. Recently, Allen has actually been hitting lefties quite a bit better, which is what actually turned him into a legitimate prospect. He doesn't appear to hit with near the same power against lefties, but he can absolutely be a quality, .850 OPS type 1B at the MLB level. And this is coming from a guy who has never really liked Brandon Allen and hasn't been overly harsh on Williams about the Pena trade. He's not going to have to hit .320 or .330 - that's absurd, really - because he's going to be able to produce 25-30 homers a year.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 11:17 AM) If the guy is conditioned to do it, and has the body to do it, why? Nolan Ryan did it until his mid 40's. There have been plenty of times that I thought Verlander was going to fall off considerably and he didn't. Part of me wants to say though that you can only condition the elbow and shoulder to a certain extent, and part of me gets that it might be perfectly natural for him. I don't know what to think or say.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 11:01 AM) If he had enough ABs to qualify, he would be no where near those numbers. Of course, he'd be in the top 10 in slugging! It's brilliant!
  11. And why do you want the Sox in 1st place by Labor Day? You are insanely accurate at predicting/starting these things. I would strongly suggest predicting that the Sox are in sole possession of first place by the end of the day on September 28th. (which, speaking of, it's going to be really weird having the season end on a Wednesday)
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 9, 2011 -> 08:34 AM) One has a SLG% of over .500, the other one is just over .300. I'll let you guess which player has the higher one. Probably the same player you would have guessed in March. If Brent Lillibridge qualified, he would be 13th in the AL in slugging percentage. I really think he's got a little bit of Ben Zobrist in him (though hopefully not literally).
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 04:48 PM) The history of high fives You learn something new everyday Is that real?
  14. QUOTE (T R U @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 09:13 PM) yeah I had already left for work, but now obviously I know they have started the series.. I just couldn't remember if they had the off day on monday or not and when I checked the site about mid afternoon there was no gamethread and there usually is.. Well that's what you get for checking here instead of a sports site dummyhead
  15. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 02:16 PM) I'm fairly confident I remember Konerko calling out the Big Hurt in 2003 or 2004 for some reason. I recall it being 2002 because I was still a little twit then and anybody who picked on my big Frank was a meanie butthead. Thomas was hitting something like .215 in the middle of the year and I don't even remember the gist of his comments but it was most definitely in criticism of Frank. The closest thing I got was an article from July 24, 2002, where Thomas hit a monstrosity of a homer (longest in the park's history at that point) like a day after Konerko had criticized him for his poor performance. That's all I have, and any articles from that far back through Google cost $3 a pop. I'm not going to pony up $3 for an article.
  16. This team is so frustrating. Just as soon as you've tuned them out, they suck you back in. It's good to see a lineup shakeup and it's good to see both Suck1 and Suck2 get on base twice, score a run, and drive in a run (and in Suck1's case, steal a base too). QUOTE (JoshPR @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 08:51 PM) Ok let me take a quick bath I'm using this.
  17. This has to be the streakiest team of all time. They've won 4 in a row, have lost 6 of 10, and are 7-7 in their last 14. I will add that I don't think they would have won this game anytime between games 3 and 110.
  18. Who is this Alex Rios look alike and what have you done with the real Alex Rios?
  19. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Aug 8, 2011 -> 02:53 PM) Hmm. I don't know. Their stats are about the same for this year, however Vizquel is a lot more experienced especially down the stretch. I probably would take his experience right now. I don't think experience is going to play that much of a factor. In fact, I'd argue that playing the younger player is going to be better because it will allow Vizquel to stay a bit fresher down the stretch.
  20. Morel has gotten more of a pass because he's a rookie, he's good defensively, he's worked his ass off, and because he's not getting paid 8 digits a year. Simple, no?
  21. The last time the White Sox swept the Twins at all was April 21-23, 2006. The last time they swept Minnesota in Minnesota was June 29-July 1, 2004. It's been a rough few years.
  22. I think only the White Sox organization - or more specifically, Greg Walker - can take a sure thing and make it worse. There is no reason that Beckham isn't one of the top 5 2B in the AL right now and there is no reason Dunn is hitting .160.
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 10:38 PM) It is way too kind to KW...though. That's the weakness. There's 20 mistakes that he has made since the end of 2008 we could list. Wilder, etc. What has Buddy Bell actually done that's had a positive impact? Recommending the Mark Teahen trade and then long-term extension? How has Bell improved our minor league system? Is there ANY evidence that we can point to at all? Only 3 positives. Viciedo, Humber and Santos. Humber really wasn't developed by the White Sox. There aren't a ton, but Hudson and Gonzalez are on there to some extent as well, and you can argue Chris Carter and Brandon Allen as well. Quite frankly, any prospects that the White Sox traded were developed to the point that they were quality enough to trade. Clayton Richard isn't the #2 starter he looked like in San Diego, but he is a solid #3-4 guy in any rotation. Basically, I'd say the White Sox have produced more since Bell took over than the previous 5 years before that.
  24. I understand that it was the last 3 weeks of 3 teams relatively meaningless seasons at that point, but he was pretty damn good in the final 3 weeks of the season. 4:3 TD:INT, was apparently looking downfield, was able to run the ball too. Meanwhile, Orton has played in 62 career games and has been in the league for 6 years. I sure hope he looks better in camp. I think Tebow will be fine. Average to slightly above average QB with an incredible work ethic and will win a lot of games late or with his feet. He's going to be fine. Tebow can still be the type of guy who can define a franchise and be that franchise player, which is something Kyle Orton never will be.
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 4, 2011 -> 07:43 AM) We just saw an article the other day about what Walker things Rios should be doing, and Rios isn't doing it. What does that tell you? It tells me Rios isn't listening to Walker. Whether that's because Rios is a total jackass or because players are tuning Walker out seems irrelevant in this situation, because it would seem that no one on the team, save Konerko and maybe Quentin, is listening to him. (with Rios, I'm going to guess it's because he's a total jackass. I don't feel the same about Beckham, Morel, or Dunn though)
