The last time AJ Pierzynski walked 2 times in one game was May 5th of 2010 versus the Kansas City Royals.

I saw the deal and knew 2 things 1) the Mets aren't getting a damn thing 2) the cash will cover the buyout and some this year too. The number that actually crossed my mind was $5 mill, so that's cool I guess. I am interested to see what happens with KRod if Axford does get hurt. He is obviously the most qualified but he will not finish a game until mid September at the earliest (relatively speaking). Knowing the Brewers, they will milk that arm for all it's worth and he will pitch in both the 7th and 8th multiple times. I have no problem with this move. May as well try for it while it's there for the taking.

How valuable is SLG when evaluating leadoff?
witesoxfan replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 12, 2011 -> 05:15 PM) Leadoff men only have guys on base in 36-37% of their plate apperances. Most of that comes from leading off the game (20% of your PAs to begin with), but having a power hitter there kind of wastes his ability to drive in runs with that power. At some point though, you need to have a good hitter leading off because they will receive the most plate appearances. Juan Pierre is a perfect 9 hitter because he gets on base fairly well, has good contact skills (those work particularly well in hit and run situations, which is actually when you want to run those to try to creatively score runs) , and has the speed to "scare" a pitcher, if you will. Understanding what I do about Viciedo, he seems like a perfect 5 hitter. That leaves Pierre, Rios, or Dunn on the bench. I think there is a timeshare that goes on, but knowing all of that, I think Quentin makes the most sense leading off. He runs well enough, gets on base well, is in scoring position quite often, has instant production possibilities, and may perhaps relax when he doesn't have anyone in front of him potentially trying to steal. He has a great eye but loves to drill the first pitch. He will have that opportunity because pitchers love to start a take with a strike. My thoughts. -
This was absolutely stupid of Beckham to do, but perhaps it has been a bit of a humbling experience, allowing him to realize that he's a major leaguer, so not only are there expectations put upon him as a ballplayer (which it doesn't appear Ozzie or Walker have noted to him) but as a representative of the game as well. Hopefully he figures out this 'obvious' situation and never does it again. It doesn't offend me. It doesn't offend most of the gay people I know either, unless it is done maliciously or repeatedly. It still doesn't make it right. QUOTE (whitem0nkey @ Jul 9, 2011 -> 06:55 PM) this is why it is an issue. 1.the gay community is fighting to have equal right like straight people and not be 2nd class citizens. 2.how many active gay baseball players do you know? they cant even be themselves and have to pretend to be straight in the public eye. this is the same as some one some one in 1955-1968 writing "GETZ IS BLACK! G.B.," This is so f***ing wrong that it's not even worth discussing. Quite frankly, there is a clear distinction between someone who has a darker skin color and someone who has a lighter skin color. There is absolutely no distinction whatsoever between someone who is "gay" and someone who is not. The only way you know if someone is homosexual is if they are willing and have the courage to admit that fact to their closest family. That's not an easy thing to do. If you are a famous athlete, it becomes much harder to do. This is not a comparable situation at all.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 10, 2011 -> 09:13 PM) I am thinking it is a loss of control because of the groin injury and not the relief role. He can't extend and push the way he needs to with those legs and lower body Going on relatively short rest after a relief appearance may have something to do with that.

From May 1st through yesterday, Beckham was at .267/.337/.386/.723. From May 20th through yesterday, Beckham was at .275/.345/.389/.734. Assuming this continues, there are a lot of changes that should be made in the offseason. The only change I'd make at this exact moment is firing Walker. I understand that offensive production throughout the entire league is down, but there are some pretty good hitters on this team who are doing absolutely nothing whatsoever. At some point, even if it's the same message, hearing it from a different voice will do wonders for a lot of these guys.

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Jul 9, 2011 -> 08:25 AM) Harrel was in the doghouse since last year. I remember a poster on another board I go to saying something he did or some attitude problem or whatever He was probably in the doghouse because he isn't a major league talent.

Honestly, Lucas Harrell is not even a AAAA player. Hopefully he finds a niche in Houston and has a career like Jason Grilli, maybe make a couple million.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 6, 2011 -> 05:02 PM) or people want to get in touch with your crack dealer That would scare me if they got over 95 wins. Would they have anything left in the tank for the post season? Really, they'd scare you? They played 162 games and after (almost certainly) being below .500 after the first 90, and they ended up winning 95 games, the first thing you'd say to yourself is that "there is no way that this team can keep a similar pace for another 19 games (at most)"? Jesus. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 12:15 AM) They were the same two guys last season saying Adam Dunn is a necessity for this team. Nothing wrong with a guy that can hit 38 homers from you from the left side. He hasn't been the same guy. He looks a hell of a lot better right now than he did in May and June. If someone said that Juan Pierre is a necessity for this team, or that Will Ohman is a necessity for this team, or that Ramon Castro is a necessity for this team, I'd be inclined to agree with you. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 7, 2011 -> 12:26 AM) What's really sad is fans believe the biggest hope is playing in the minors right now. Imagine what it will be like for him to get called up in a race and tries to over do everything and doesn't get the same results. Let's not forget he just starting to play the outfield and I guess he's using to playing in a smaller outfield. The guy who's tied for 3rd in the International League in home runs? Or 10th in batting average? Or tied for the league lead (with former Sox hand Stefan Gartrell, who has about the same discipline at the plate as I do) in extra base hits? All while being one of the youngest players in the league? Dayan Viciedo has a monstrosity of a ceiling, so those who think he could be a key addition to the ballclub are not "sad". What's "sad" is that people don't understand how good this guy is. Simply looking at the numbers, he reminds me a lot of Juan Gonzalez. Oh, and if he's used to playing in a smaller outfield, that's fine, considering USCF is one of the smallest outfields in the majors, which is where's he'll spend almost half of his games. I'm sure he's played in bigger parks though...call it a hunch.

I'm guessing it is closer to 80 than 60. And he has some serious athletic ability. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=3636405 I'm quite honestly liking this pick more and more.

mofos lost on my mofoing birfday

Let's hope that the sample size bias is proven wrong then. Btw, today marks the 4th anniversary of Gavin Floyd's first start with the White Sox. Said anniversary also coincides with the day that shall not be forgotten.

Greg Walker signed to long term extension....
witesoxfan replied to BigSqwert's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Really? Starting a thread with that title? I guess that's to be expected -
He's got a lot of talent. Whether the Sox or he can do anything with that talent is yet to be seen, but this is far from a bad draft choice. Perhaps not the best, but most definitely not the worst. I'm excited to have him start playing.

and they better f***ing win, because it's my BIRTHDAY goddammit. That, and they're facing Bruce Chen and it has been statistically proven that Bruce Chen is the worst pitcher of all time.
-
The White Sox are 28-20 since Peavy made his first start of the year. That's a .583 winning percentage and is a 94-95 win pace over 162 games.

Starting to decrease the outputs along the river around here. After running at 150 cfs in Bismarck and 165 in Pierre, they are down to 140 and 150 respectively. The river is down a bit as a result, but they are weaning off like they are instead of dropping a ton due to some problems they had in Fargo. They ran the river at like 120 cfs and then once they saw the worst of it was behind, they decreased it to like 75 or something. That drastic of a shift actually caused all of the loose debris and silt within the river itself to settle very quickly and the lack of flow down the river caused for some river backup and flooding. So they continue to go slow until the threat has passed, and hopefully we don't have to deal with the flooding again. They are planning on going down to 135 on July 12th here and hope to be down to 120 by the end of the month. That would be nice.

Why wouldn't Miguel Cabrera be a fan favorite? Because of his drunk driving record? -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 06:17 PM) High leverage situations should matter to that stat though, right? No. High leverage only matters with regards to WPA.

Adam Dunn, nobody deserves that right now more than you.

Season 9 was not Scrubs. I don't care what they say, it simply was not Scrubs.

I think Djokovic took the 3rd set off today to give Nadal some sense of false hope. He absolutely dominated the first two sets and I thought he was running out of gas in the 3rd, but I sorta just think he needed some rest. He looked absolutely incredible today.
