  1. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 3, 2011 -> 10:11 AM) Cowley is the go to guy for Sox coverage in this town and it isn't even close. It's nice to have someone call out KW there are enough who call out Guillen. I was pretty goddamn sure you were a troll before. This post assures me of that. Joe Cowley is worse than Jay Mariotti. He's a gigantic piece of s***. f*** him and the horse he rode in on.
  2. Including Cinci, Cameron has played on 6 different teams since that trade. The guy the Sox got has only played on 1.
  3. Remenowsky with a nice debut too. Threw 41 pitches.
  4. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 09:32 PM) Chris Harris sent me a friend request... that made me smile. He's cool as s***, really down-to-earth and interacts with the fans a lot. He's sending his top 10 fans an autograph (I'm one, yay me) That is f***ing awesome. Maybe if you make it back to Chicago, you can go out clubbing with him. Just don't tell the wife.
  5. I'd also like to point out that while the Red Sox are a SABR team, they are not run in a Moneyball fashion. The entire point of Moneyball is getting an obtaining assets that are undervalued. The A's haven't forgotten about OBP - no team should - but Coco Crisp would not have been a member of the A's 10 years ago, and he sure as hell wouldn't have 24 steals (Ray Durham is quoted in Moneyball saying something like "In Chicago, you were applauded if you stole a base and applauded if you were caught stealing so long as it was a good attempt. In Oakland, if you steal, you better be safe because you are scolded if you are caught, close or not"). Right now, it seems that defense and doubles hitters are undervalued by baseball. The problem is that the translation of defense statistics (which are very subjective and are somewhat dependent) to actual results varies wildly. There are better ways to track defense, but there is nothing that translates as well as offensive numbers do. Pitching is similar to that as well, but pitching numbers translate too, though ERA can be a bit misleading at times.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 12:13 AM) With all due respect, how do you know you would work as hard as Juan? Do you realize the grind of a pro baseball season? Now maybe you are a Robo-man superman. I don't know you. But plenty of baseball players each offseason THINK they are going to work hard and don't. I don't think it's a given you or anybody would play as hard as Pierre does. I want Dayan in the lineup, period, but Chicago should probably be ashamed of himself hating on Juan as much as it does. I mean what other player has 2 days in a row led us to victory (besides Sergio and our excellent starters)?? Rios? Dunn? Gordon B? Lexi? It's a rhetorical idea. I have no idea if I would work as hard as Juan. I'd like to think so but I simply don't know. I bet Adam Dunn is working his ass off right now, but because he's been a great power hitter in the past and he isn't starting to come through and he isn't grindy nor a particularly likable character, people like you criticize the hell out of him. That's a double standard. Oh, and as to Juan "leading" the Sox to victory...I don't think so. That is a combined team effort and him having the go ahead hit doesn't mean that he led the team to victory. If you want to play it like that, then I'd say that he's cost the Sox more games due to defensive lapses than he has won them with his bat. April and May weren't that long ago.
  7. If I played professional baseball, I would work just as hard as Juan Pierre. I'm quite clearly not as talented as any major leaguer, but through my hardwork, I would raise my batting average from .050 to .125. Would you cheer for me and want me to remain on the team? Juan Pierre is a 4th outfielder who is starting in LF and getting the most plate appearances of anybody on the team.
  8. My Lunch and My Fallen Idol are amazing. I still get chills every time.
  9. The only time the White Sox should ever, ever bunt is when they are down by 1 run late in the game. That's the only time any team should ever bunt. Bunting increases the likelihood that you will score 1 run, but decreases the likelihood that you will score multiple runs. I'd have absolutely no problem never having the Sox bunt unless it is a late game situation.
  10. A .651 winning percentage for that club over half a season ain't nothin but a thang. In their final 72 games last year, they went 47-25; that's a .652 winning percentage. In 2006, they went 69-32 over their final 101 games; that's a .683 winning percentage. They need to get a couple guys back, but they can absolutely still make a run at the division. That's why the Sox need to win about 92 games.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 02:36 PM) The biggest problem with that bullpen is that, especially with Thornton's struggles...it's really weak against RH batters. There are always going to be problems. I don't think this is that severe of a problem though. Sale, in his brief time up, has been just as effective against righties as he is lefties, Thornton isn't terrible (but isn't someone you want facing Miguel Cabrera with the game on the line), and both Crain and Santos are very good. That's 3 viable options. The ideal scenario would be to find a taker for Teahen, but that's simply not going to happen without the Sox picking up a sizable portion of his contract (which, quite frankly, wouldn't be a bad idea either). Dunn will be available as a pinch hitter on a lot of nights and Vizquel can still hit a bit too, so there isn't a huge need for a lefty off the bench. I don't think they can justify getting rid of Pierre now, even as mediocre as he is, and you obviously cannot get rid of Dunn (nor do I think that would be smart). I'm not sure exactly. I do know that Viciedo on this team would do a hell of a lot of good.
  12. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 01:43 PM) I thought that was what you were implying. Not at all, just that it's entirely possible and probably likely that Kuhn would go through a similar adjustment period and that he is not as good defensively as Morel. There is a drastic difference between the minors and the majors and the grass is not always greener.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 12:47 AM) I don't think ANYONE has a problem with Dunn getting days off. The problem is Cowley is going to argue we permanently bench Dunn and give up on him in favor of Viciedo, when you simply cannot do that. What player would you get rid of to bring up Viciedo? Probably Bruney, even though I do actually like Bruney. If the Sox are still running with a 6 man rotation, they have a long reliever in whichever starter is on his throw day, and that's really all you need that isn't bring provided. I have complete faith in Santos, Crain, Thornton, Sale, and, to some extent, even Ohman. The pitching is absolutely fine. What this team needs is offense. Of course, that would be assuming Ozzie would manage it properly. I believe 100% that he would screw that up.
  14. Buy him a shock collar. Every time he strikes out, he gets buzzed. Hopefully he's not into S&M
  15. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 12:06 PM) I heard Michael Kaye on the radio this morning and TWICE he mentioned that the Yankees would be looking to add a starter "like a King Felix" before the deadline. Is Felix even available? The fact that he said it 2x made me wonder. Michael Kay is a tool and this idea that the Yankees can trade for anyone simply because they are the Yankees and have money is absurd. I hope they miss the playoffs. It really would be nice if baseball somehow found a way to regulate payrolls in the next CBA, but I don't see any way that's possible with the strength of the MLBPA and the lack of stones on Bud Selig.
  16. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 10:22 AM) From here, it sure looks as if Jordan Danks is a better player than he was a year ago. I would not be surprised if he makes Sox in 2012, as backup CF if nothing else. I think he will have an edge over Lillibridge next year. Lillibridge has earned his role on the bench next year. Oh, and if Danks requires that his brother be on the roster to resign, you f***ing trade him. That's worse than LeBron James wanting his posse in the locker room...that's wanting your posse on the major league roster. You trade him with his brother and let that organization deal with it (and then watch both be all-stars during the same season)
  17. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 10:35 AM) That's so wrong. Morel is better with the glove, but Kuhn is in no way bad. This myth that Kuhn is bad defensively needs to stop. Then how is it wrong? If Morel is better defensively than Kuhn, isn't Kuhn worse on defense than Morel? I didn't SAY he was bad.
  18. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 05:44 PM) There's a million more out there bro, you'll find one better. There are actually quite a few more than a million.
  19. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 1, 2011 -> 12:28 AM) I don't understand how these writers can be so shortsighted. Adam Dunn is owed approximately $49 million for the remainder of his contract here. But yeah, he's struggled terrible for 80 games, so let's just bench him permanently. Makes a ton of sense. These guys are absolute fools. If it were up to them, we'd have half the payroll spent on paying players in other organizations because we DFA'd them after 30 games. I have absolutely no problem with Viciedo coming up and taking significant at bats away from Dunn and Pierre. Perhaps a mental reprieve is exactly what Dunn needs to get back, and Viciedo is simply a better option than Pierre. You can get all 3 of them pretty significant playing time, which allows you to play the hot hand when it's necessary. If all 3 of them start hitting really well, then I'm sure there will be another on the field who is in the early stages of a slump that you can find a sub for. This team needs some kind of offensive spark, and Viciedo could be exactly that.
  20. QUOTE (Cali @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 07:52 PM) I'm slowly on the Kuhn to replace Morel bandwagon.... Never happen, but I like things to shake up to get an offense going... So that way Kuhn can come up and do the exact same thing Morel is doing offensively right now while being worse defensively?
  21. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 10:08 PM) Dayan homers in game 2. He really needs to be up, even if it's just rotating between LF and DH, even if he only gets 4-5 games a week.
  22. The 05 offense was deadly huh? What in the hell is the difference between this offense and that offense? Not enough grindiness? Sorry, we'll bring in Pretty Ricky and he can grind on you then.
  23. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Jun 30, 2011 -> 07:51 PM) Whaaaaaatttttt????? Dunn doesn't belong batting third even if he's hitting his career norms. I'm sorry, but you just don't bat a .250-.260 hitter third just because he has power. When Dunn is right he's the kind of guy you want batting fifth to give your cleanup hitter, Paulie, some good protection. Dude walks a lot and hits for power. I would have no problem with him hitting 3rd if he were right. I'd prefer 4th, but 3rd would be OK.
  24. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 11:55 PM) Lastings Milledge continues to hit. Average climbing up to .280 while sporting a great K/BB ratio, and good numbers on the base paths. I would like to see them bring him up and give him a few days at LF and lead off to see what he can do. He has had great potential a few years back, and I think he can still turn into an everyday player in the majors. Lastings Milledge has the capability of turning into an average to slightly above average bat. Dayan Viciedo has the chance to be the f***ing 5 hitter on this team. I know who I am playing in LF. If/when they get eliminated, you can dick around with it, but Viciedo is the only option at this point in time.
  25. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jun 29, 2011 -> 11:46 PM) but then again.... 1993 White Sox first 81 games 42-39 last 81 games 52-29 Just sayin'. I had forgotten how mediocre their start was and how hot they got in the second half. Just sayin' They've never been a second half team under Ozzie for some reason, but they were a great second half team under Manuel. The Royals were up like 7 games at the All-Star Break in 2003 and the Sox passed them pretty handily, finishing with the second best record in the AL in the second half of that year. Problem of course was that the goddamn Twins had the best record, and then naturally blew it in the playoffs.
