  1. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 06:48 PM) I'd like to know this as well because I always thought fastballs were the easiest to bunt. As I recall from my limited playing time and just listening to old timey players talk about it, fastballs are actually the hardest pitch to bunt. They're coming in extremely fast and because they don't have downward movement and instead stay generally flat, the tendency to pop them up increases extraordinarily, especially when they are above the belt. On top of that, major leaguers are great at locating pitches so they can put them generally wherever they want and you will see players jabbing at it, which also makes it difficult as well. It's not always an easy task which is why even a fundamentally sound player like Punto can f it up pretty easily like that.
  2. Williams states that he will move his guys for major league ready talent only, and then in the second paragraph states that he'll have to see what teams are willing to give up and that they may have to trade today's talent for tomorrow's talent, implying somehow that he is trading for A or AA players. I don't believe that to be the case but rather that he's simply suggesting that he is trading today's currently good players for tomorrow's currently good players, but tomorrow's currently good players are still major league ready talent.
  3. Had my worst set in years and years this past Tuesday. I shot a 538...for 4. It was just a really weird shot, didn't have the equipment to handle it, and couldn't pick up a spare to save my life. Seriously, it was like anything on 6 board or in slid all the way and took out the corner, and if you hit 7 or 8, it was coming up high. I couldn't find a consistent shot either, as the right lane seemed a bit dryer at the beginning of the night than the left, and that flipflopped by the end of the night. Nobody else seemed to have trouble with it so it's all on me. I actually really don't enjoy bowling in that Tuesday league simply because they tend to run out the difficult shot and it's the best bowlers in the area, so I get a little overwhelmed. I just want a shot where I can throw it and the ball does all the work. I'm pretty much a casual bowler at this point.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 19, 2011 -> 08:35 AM) But can't you see that there's a difference between the levels "Actually been a manager before"..."Actively worked under a manager and prepared for the next step" and "no managerial activity or preparation whatsoever". I can tolerate the latter for a technique coach...but the actual manager's spot it might be nice to at least be at the middle level. I understand that you want some sort of coaching experience at this level, but let's not act like he's never seen any of this before. He's going to have a bit of a feel for it right away, but there are going to be things that really make us question what's going on. I believe somewhere around 90-95% of managing can be done having never done anything in the major leagues.
  5. QUOTE (gosox41 @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 08:59 PM) Is there some sort of study that shows that being a great player means you will be a great coach/manager? I've said it before. I would only hire experiencved coaches and managers if I owned this team. I wouldn't bother taking shots if proven winners were available. Bob I am perfectly content taking Ventura over Buddy Bell and Bobby Valentine. You can ask for experienced managers all you want to, but the only one who may have potentially been available is Francona, and I don't know how much he actually wants to manage this year.
  6. QUOTE (MEANS @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 03:36 PM) Has there ever been a hitting coach/player? I kid I kid..... I don't. He would still be a great weapon off the bench, and there would be no better teaching tool then going up to the plate, hitting a ball 480 feet, and going back to said pupil and saying "see, that is how you hit the curve"
  7. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Oct 17, 2011 -> 02:29 PM) Tebow is nowhere near Steve Young like, not even close. Well I think you're wrong. Aside from them both being left handed, which is what triggered the initial thought in my mind, neither have good arm strength, both were mobile QBs who weren't particularly fast but had great vision, and both showed an incredible desire to win. The main differences, and they are big, are Young's ability to checkdown (which we really haven't seen from Tebow yet, but we really haven't seen Tebow yet) and their accuracy. QBs who don't have good arm strength won't succeed in Fox's system, thus, Steve Young would not have succeeded in Fox's system. They quite obviously succeed in Chan Gailey's system, so, while he may not have been as good, he would still fit the Bills offensive system. Like I mentioned, Young had years and years of tutelage under one of the greatest QBs of all time as well as an incredible quote. Tebow would have Ryan Fitzpatrick and Chan Gailey.
  8. 2 things 1) I hope Buehrle is back. 2) I do not like modern nicknames.
  9. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 01:56 AM) What can I say? I support Ozzie all the way. He gave me the only title of my lifetime and probably the only title of my lifetime. Odds are very slim we'll win one again. He did not give you that. Group 4 did.
  10. THIS IS NOT WHITE SOX RELATED HE IS NOT A MEMBER OF THE WHITE SOX ORGANIZATION (it actually is the truth. The fewer Ozzie threads from this point forward in this forum, the better it will be)
  11. And this would explain Walker remaining hitting coach, even though it was blatantly obvious at the end of 2010 (and whatever other years you wish to cite, though 2010 is the best cutoff in my mind) that he was no longer doing his job. QUOTE ( @ Oct 18, 2011 -> 09:51 AM) Now it makes sense why Coop wasn't given serious consideration for the manager's job. Kenny didn't have a spy to take his place. Let's spin this back around - how do you know that Ventura won't be a spy and that he was hired as quickly as he was because one of the interview questions by Williams was "do you solemnly swear to tell me the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about everything that goes on in that clubhouse, so help you God?" You are so full of s*** sometimes it's unreal.
  12. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 17, 2011 -> 05:31 AM) I'm picturing Tebow with a big grin on his face saying to Wite..."Do I make you horny? Come on, tell me, do I make you randy?" Ha, just a little. Tebow reminds me so much of Steve Young that it's silly, but Steve Young also got to sit behind Joe Montana and work with one of the greatest football minds of all time, so he had a lot going for him. If the Bills were to acquire him in the offseason - which I think I'd honestly put at 50% right now because I know that Ralph Wilson really likes him, there were reports that the Bills were looking to move up to a similar spot to draft him, Chan Gailey would work an offense around your abilities if you threw it backwards every time, John Elway and John Fox seemingly don't like him, and there is a distinct possibility that both Brandon Lloyd and Eddie Royal end up changing teams in the next 48 hours leaving Tebow with virtually no weapons and, like I mentioned earlier, setting him up for failure to justify a trade to the fan base - it would be with the intention to either have him start in the next 2 seasons. If he flops in Denver, I don't know if he'll be mentally prepared for that. Hopefully he would be, because I do think he could be a great QB in this league. And, even though Fitz isn't exactly Joe Montana, he's still very smart and does a great job attacking defenses as well as he can.
  13. QUOTE (chw42 @ Oct 17, 2011 -> 01:49 AM) Fitzpatrick rushed that throw. He was still back pedaling when he got rid of it. Johnson had Webster beat. I was so pissed when that happened. The stat sheet will say that Webster played a good game but Stevie was abusing him whenever lined up on his side. A semi-miraculous catch and a severe underthrow were the reasons for his 2 picks. If playing QB were all about mentality and seeing the field, Fitzpatrick would be a top 5 QB in the game, but a game like this exposes some of his bigger weaknesses, those being a mediocre (or even weak) arm and only so-so accuracy. He really can't do a whole lot beyond 20 yards and even Roosevelt's TD was only like a 15 yard pass and the defense fell apart. I also think that, if Tebow flops (and it sort of seems like the Broncos are setting him up to do so), the Bills will be very interested in acquiring him, which scares and excites me all at the same time.
  14. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 16, 2011 -> 10:36 AM) We need to have a list of the top 25 reasons Big Lebowski is such a focking brilliant film. Until then I can do sports movies. Top 25 Big Lebowski quotes would be amazing. You don't even need any background info from the quote itself, just a clip to the scene of the movie. I quote so many obscure lines from that movie and people still get it immediately. "Oh, and Dude...tomorrow's already the 10th." "Far out." "..." "Ohh, right"
  15. I don't know how you can overrate Suh. Maybe if you said he was the best defensive tackle of all time. I haven't seen a defensive player have that type of immediate impact in a really long time. --- Can't say I'm not happy about the Bills being 4-2 at this point, especially since both losses have been by 3 points and I had no expectations for this team other than 6 wins going into the season, but they really should have won today, and it all happened on Fitzpatrick's 2nd INT. His 1st INT was a ball he should have never thrown, but it was also a ball that Webster should have never picked either and it was incredible that he did. Stevie Johnson had Webster beat on that last one pretty badly and if Fitz leads him instead of throwing up a jump ball, then the Bills go up 31-24 and force the Giants to punch it in. If not that, they were on the Giants 30 and could have simply run it a few times, maybe tried to pick up a 1st, and killed clock, forcing Eli to make a comeback. The officials seemed to side with the Giants, but that's homefield advantage and it wasn't enough to kill the Bills. The Giants DBs are not that good either. All they do is follow exactly where the receiver goes and turn around when he goes up for the catch to make it legal. Teams should totally take advantage of that by dekeing the DBs...just have a WR go up for a phantom pass, have the DB turn around, and have the WR turn on the jets. They'd be toast and it would make them second guess their tendencies.
  16. I'm happier about this outcome than I would have been about New York-Philadelphia. I would have preferred Milwaukee-Detroit or Milwaukee-Tampa, but this works. Either someone gets their first World Series title or Cubs fans get to be miserable again.
  17. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Oct 15, 2011 -> 05:54 PM) Crossing my fingers. It's getting close to do or die with him. He's only played 1 full year of professional baseball. Next year is big for him because he has to show something otherwise be subjected to the Rule V, but I think they'll end up putting him on the 40-man regardless. I'm giving him 2 more years, but you do need to see some signs next year to have hope for him long term - and by signs, I'm talking about doing well at W-S or showing competency at Birmingham.
  18. Oh, and Elvis Andrus, why are you bunting for hits when up by 5 and trying to steal bases when up by 6? I don't care that it's the playoffs, that's still pretty bush, especially the stealing, and it's stupid too because all you are going to do is cost your team outs, which is what he did.
  19. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 15, 2011 -> 09:08 PM) I always get into an argument with people about McCarver. I don't get the ire...I think he is a bit hokey, but for the vast majority of the viewing audience, I think he makes excellent points. I've listened to just about everyone else they've had doing these games, and with the exception of maybe Brenly, I find McCarver to be infinitely more listenable. The level of obviousness to his analysis is absurd, he makes absurd points and says absurd lines at all times, and I honestly don't like the sound of his voice. He seems to interject at weird times too.
  20. QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Oct 15, 2011 -> 09:04 PM) Sorry, I just have to say it... I am absolutely thrilled for Edwin Jackson. Kenny treated him like crap for his entire stay in Chicago - told him to stay at the hotel back in the summer of 2010 because he so sure he was moving on to DC for Dunn. Then, Kenny couldn't wait to unload him during this past season as Edwin was a constant reminder of how he got played yet again - this time by Mike Rizzo. Kenny's no doubt figuring that if Dunn had shown even a glimpse of what was to come, he would have been apprehensive about offering Dunn a long-term deal. Now, Edwin gets a chance to pitch the Cardinals to the World Series - the perfect cosmic retribution. And we have the never-even-coached-little-league Robin Ventura managing MLB's version of the SS Titanic. Well done, Kenny Williams, well done indeed! You are on some good drugs or a movie director, because the level of overanalysis and depth to a fictional story is incredible. damn autocorrect
  21. If there is one person I want to punch in the face solely because of their commenting on a game, it's Tim McCarver. Everything he says is awful. Simply awful.
  22. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 08:19 PM) Don't they have bunch of cash coming off the books this year? QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 12, 2011 -> 01:11 AM) Aramis, Pena, and Fukudome are the big ones. Problem is, their replacements make Beent Morel look raw. And they might well blow all that money on a big name to sell tickets. They do have money coming off but, in a lot of instances, it goes right back into the current payroll due to raises. I did some arbitrary figures a while back and basically came up with them cutting less than $10 million from next year's payroll. That's probably not even going to be enough to get Carlos Pena.
  23. So I'm going through my PMs, deleting a few of them to make space but keeping the ones I know I want to keep. I have some old MFing PM's btw. Anyways, I run into this one Whos choking now b****? 3 and a half out. dated Sept 21, 2005. Said poster's name was gosoxttc. Said person was obviously a troll. I find this one curious for a number of different reasons: #1) The Indians were actually 2.5 out after CREDE #2) Said poster, as far as I was aware, was never actually banned. I like it more like that. #3) Oh, and don't call me Walter for living in the past but said team that was, like, you know, 2.5 (3.5!!!)
  24. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 10:07 PM) I don't think he's a horrible interview at all. It's just hard to provide answers for the real reason he was hired without throwing Guillen under the bus. I think it's clear in reading everything that's been written that Ventura was hired by chairman Reinsdorf first and foremost to get a dysfunctional clubhouse in order and provide leadership. Everyone involved in the hiring, Ventura especially, has to dance around that or risk Guillen going off. I don't believe that any of this is wrong and I look forward to seeing how Ventura actually handles the rigors of managing everyday.
