  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2012 -> 12:29 PM) The Bills have a mess on their hands, because Fred Jackson is also an unrestricted FA this offseason, and they can't tag both of them. VJax could well be tagged again this season, but this would be a 2nd year tag for him. He made $11.4 million on the tag this year, so next year's tag should be something like $13.7 million/1 year for him if they use it on him again. Fred Jackson is signed for about $1.5 mill next year. He's not a free agent. Next year IS the last year of his deal. I remember them making a big deal about that when he got injured, because he very well could have been a holdout candidate next training camp considering he was on pace to put up 1500 rushing yards and 2200 all purpose yards. Now that he's injured and Spiller showed he can be effective, he's going to have to prove he's healthy again. If the Bills can't come to terms with Stevie on a long term deal, franchising him is the next logical step, because they sure as hell aren't going to franchise Demetrius Bell (who I'd be perfectly fine with having back).
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 1, 2012 -> 02:48 PM) And our team is led by Kenny Williams? Really? Losing is no fun. When there are 2 baseball teams in the same city and one is named the Cubs, the White Sox and their nonlegions of fans (compared to the Flubs) cannot afford to be irrelevant in May every year the next 10 years. You are comparing Chuck LaMar to Kenny Williams. At its worst, that's comparing death by a million paper cuts to breaking a finger or maybe even an arm or something. If only the White Sox still had Ozzie Guillen, right?
  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 3, 2012 -> 10:09 PM) Royals fans I talk to are amazed at the Quentin trade. They see it as a real player dealt for 2 lousy prospects. I don't know why you guys don't care to know the perception of the White Sox in Kansas City. The Sox are currently seen as a joke. The Quentin trade is the latest head-scratcher. I had several people ask me if Sox fans were furious. I said, "Not the ones I know. They love the trade. They hate Quentin and love whenever we get guys with no track record. Our fans love the unknown." They are AMAZED we gave Quentin away for nothing. They asked me if I was upset at the trade. I said of course I was. I'm guessing most people you talked to have no perception of the value of a baseball player. With regards to the scouting community, Carlos Quentin has exactly 1 good tool, and that is his power. If he hits .280, he can be a legit MVP candidate. But, as is usually the case, he will hit anywhere between .230-.250, his power numbers will suffer as a result, and he'll put up an .850 OPS at best, which is good before you consider his mediocre arm, bad defense, and oft-injured nature. On top of that, he's going to make anywhere probably $7 or $8 mill this year and then he's a free agent, so he either gets really expensive or he gets really injured, and the Sox end up with nothing either way. I bet Viciedo has a better WAR than Quentin this year. I'm actually quite confident he will. **For clarification purposes, Quentin was and still will be a player I enjoy to watch hit, especially when he is going good. I'm also not crazy about the trade. At the end of the day, it's hard to complain about it because you can't ask for much more than two live arms considering the total value of Quentin. They could have tried to deal him midseason, but it's just as likely that he gets hurt for a period of time and you are lucky to get 1 of those arms for him.
  4. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 3, 2012 -> 12:32 AM) Personally, I think he can be a Luis Gonzalez-type player. Luis's career averages were a .283/.367.479/.845 slashline with 22 HR, 90 RBI, and 37 2B with below average defense. That's the comp I would pick. I could see something similar statistically, but I don't think you could have picked a more different looking ballplayer.
  5. QUOTE (beautox @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 01:01 AM) Honestly I would love to see the sox move pk and aj to south beach opening up first to acquire morales and a spec for the likes of thornton. Lets make the continue to make the south side of chicago a prime destination for cuban defectors. Not sure why Florida would be interested in either of them with Buck and Sanchez in at C and 1B. Morrison can play 1B in a pinch too.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 03:19 PM) Oh Crikey.... I have no problem with that hire at all. Keep him out of the driver's seat by all means, but he's a good defensive mind and some defensive creativity will go a long ways towards making the Bills a playoff team. The Bills needs going into next season are resigning Stevie Johnson, bringing in a good pass rusher (if not 2), and shoring up the secondary. They could use help along the offensive line, a weapon for Fitzpatrick, and some sort of developmental QB. They got off to a great start this year and there are a few pieces in place to make this work. And, it was the same story as last year, but half of their losses were by a touchdown or less. I realize that they had 2 miraculous comebacks in weeks 2 and 3, and that a lot of losses come that way as well, but they are still an improving team. I'm not necessarily sure if Fitzpatrick is going to be a guy that can lead them to a Superbowl or even a deep playoff run, but he can definitely get them to the playoffs and, barring Peyton Manning being traded to the Jets or Dolphins (which I could totally see happening which would piss me right the hell off), I see them in the playoffs next year.
  7. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 31, 2011 -> 04:44 PM) Interesting. I wonder if maybe fWAR relies more on peripherals (Peavy's were great in 2011, his best since 2005), and bWAR relies more on innings pitched (only 111)? This is generally correct. fWAR focuses on defensive independent statistics when looking at the quality of a pitcher. They believe that it is a better and more consistent way of looking at pitching. bWAR focuses mostly on what a pitcher actually does, including what the defense does. Peavy put up a 4.92 ERA last year but a 3.21 FIP and 3.52 xFIP. It makes sense that his bWAR is terrible but his fWAR is high. I'm expecting a nice bounceback season from him this year.
  8. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 30, 2011 -> 07:11 PM) Amen to that. Speaking of quantitative analysis: did you see that Tom Tango is starting up online classes? A grand for early bird's and $1495 after that, I can't imagine find too many takers at that price (perhaps I'm just naive or cheap) but it's intriguing none the less. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 30, 2011 -> 07:17 PM) That's kind of ridiculous... I imagine he's catering to the hardcore sabermetricians who want to do actual statistical research and not just evaluate players for the hell of it. I would love to have a sabermetrics related stats class at the college level though. That'd be a class worth taking (I'm paying the tuition for 18 credit hours anyways). EDIT: After looking at http://tangotiger.net/teaching.html, it looks like there will be a decent amount of CS in it (data mining is a 400 level CS topic at UIUC). Looks like this is the kind of class that can prep you for a job on same ML club. A lot of the clubs want you to be able to gather all their data for them. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 30, 2011 -> 07:22 PM) I think the big selling point is the 2 hour one-on-one workshop with Tango himself via internet/phone. And yeah; he's definitely going for the hardcore sabermetricians, he basically says so with his snarky pitch. This is clearly for people who are looking to enter the field as a career choice. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 30, 2011 -> 07:36 PM) Apparently, registration is half-full according to Tango. So there are definitely people interested in dishing out the money. Holy s***, I think I need to do this. If even one of you says you're down, then I'm down immediately. Even at $1500. If I can get in at $1,000 still...no, haven't looked, don't care...then that saves me $500. PM me if you actually want to do this. Mostly for vanity purposes, but this could actually make and meet several new year resolutions, if you actually do that kind of thing.
  9. Lesnar is such a piece of s***. From the South Dakota area, initially went to Bismarck State College to wrestle, and then went to U of Minn. He's apparently "pretty f***ing great" (I have heard stories. And I have heard folk tales. And I have heard fables. I will repeat them if you wish, but I feel they're meaningless). He was in town for God knows what in like August or sometime around then, and stayed at the Ramkota in Bismarck (where I am currently employed). He ate dinner with his family and extended "family." My friend wanted a signature, because 'who doesn't want a signature from the GREAT BROCK LESNAR?' I asked the server if I could take a photo. He would only give a signature. Imagine that. The guy who cooked his food wants nothing more than a photo with a guy who wrestled at a college and received treatment for a staph infection. Sorry, considering he came during the time that parts of Bismarck were underwater, I figure he'd show atleast some sort of civic pride. Of course, as he has done with everything, he'd probably have stopped the flood, by himself, only halfway, and then decided it was time to kick a tornado's ass in Kansas. And then he'd go on to Sumo wrestling, and hopefully have a fat guy sit on him. He is not a humble person. He should be, considering that he really could be dead right now. I wish Mir had won the second match. Seeing tonight't final speech....I came just a little bit in my panths.
  10. I am looking to buy a pool table with a few friends. Nothing new and fancy, just something to play on to save some money at the bars. A few questions... 1) what dimensions should I be looking for? 2) what price should I pay for a standard used pool table, with rack and balls included? 3) (and perhaps most importantly) how much does replacing a felt cost? 3a) is replacing the felt something feasible by an ungifted person?
  11. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 30, 2011 -> 11:57 AM) You're right...they are not in the level of nester molina and phil humber in terms of powerhouse. I think only one person has said that, and that was the creator of the thread. He's been pretty thoroughly shot down by everybody.
  12. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 28, 2011 -> 05:15 PM) I wish we could have gotten Reddick and a piece. Damnit. Sox need for a starter far outweighs their need for a corner OFer.
  13. QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 28, 2011 -> 02:43 AM) It says it wasn't personal. Well not between Ozzie and Dunn
  14. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 07:47 PM) Not a prediction. But I want to let all of Soxtalk know that if Thornton sports a better K-rate, WHIP, FIP, save% and saves overall than Soria I will get the Bieber tattoo. And to make it more interesting, he only has to trump Soria in 3 of those 5 categories for me to get the tat. J4L keeps his word. So save this post. Put it in your sigs or whatever. You lucky motherf***er. Thornton was most definitely the better pitcher this year, but he only beat Soria in 2 of those 5.
  15. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Dec 28, 2011 -> 01:58 AM) Oh, and DIRT cheap for a while. Once Peavy is off the books our rotation will cost like 20-25 Million for a few years. That leaves the rest to spend on an offense. It's not so bad looking forward...if Molina, Sale and Humber work out. I understand that's a big time IF but so is everything in this silly game we love more than our families. That would be $20-25 million to spend on 20 other players, 6-7 of which will constitute a bullpen. It's got upside, but I would gladly take Detroit's over the Sox. Verlander is a monster, Scherzer and Porcello are both solid pitchers, and Jacob Turner looks like he has a really good arm too. Fister's a good pitcher too, even if I don't really care for him much.
  16. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 28, 2011 -> 01:16 AM) I stopped when you suggested Humber could or would put up a 1.00 WHIP next year. If any of you recall, it was me (and maybe J4L?) who were the ONLY two people who welcomed and thought he would be a decent pitcher for us, and I STILL am not that optimistic about Humber. I think he is due for a regression, and AT BEST, he repeats his very solid 2010 proformance. It was certainly not J4L, as he and I were pretty adamant and very wrong about Humber being nothing more than a AAAA guy. I'm still not sure exactly what he is, but I will bet that it's more likely he's a mid to back end of the rotation starter instead of a guy who is going to put up a WHIP of 1. He's got a long ways to go before he's even a sub 1.10 WHIP pitcher. I also don't think of this as a rising powerhouse rotation. I think of Tampa Bay when I think of something like that, and even that's not exactly true. There is a foundation for a rotation that can win a lot of ball games and make the Sox contenders, but they'll need other parts to function as well. Sale obviously has the greatest potential, but he may have the greatest risk for failure as well.
  17. QUOTE (sunofgold @ Dec 27, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) Thanks for the link. Well that movie correctly predicted that there would be a baseball team in Miami. However, they show an alligator swinging a bat as the logo for the Miami team. Actually. wouldn't mind seeing that as Miami's logo. The Miami Gators. There has been a team in Miami for 18 years. They just finally change the name of their team to Miami.
  18. It's more like working in a mine, where cave-ins could happen at any moment and kill you or leave isolated for god knows how long, only to find out that working in a mine has been the cause of dementia and migraines.
  19. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 25, 2011 -> 03:16 AM) Tebow failed because it wasn't Sunday. I think the Bills ruined Christmas
  20. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 26, 2011 -> 11:40 AM) I didn't say you were less-qualified than I am. I objected to your pompous "I cannot make this any more clear" bs. Yes, you're probably correct that he needs more seasoning, but if you think you can suddenly predict things that MLB scouts can't predict, you need to take a step back and not be so condescending.
  21. QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Dec 26, 2011 -> 03:25 PM) thank you guys, you're doing a great service to those of us that were planning on having two PBR's tops You would n00b
  22. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 26, 2011 -> 12:36 PM) When I saw this yesterday, I took it as a sign that the show will be back. Not when Donald says "It's a f***ing brush."
  23. QUOTE (Andrew @ Dec 22, 2011 -> 10:54 PM) This, plus - my next question would be - was this a secret to Ozzie? He was sticking him in situations that didn't favor him all year. No big Ozzie fan, but I can't believe he'd do that KNOWING there was an issue with his kid. Come to think of it - I doubt Ozzie would be able to keep his f***ing mouth shut about it. I think Ozzie did that intentionally. I think he was putting Dunn in the worst spots possible to screw with him and to set him up for failure because he did not like Dunn nor what he represented to the White Sox and it was his way of getting back at Williams for giving him a team he did not want. Yes, I think Ozzie is that petty and shallow.
  24. This is an oddball question, but I'm trying to buy tickets for my dad as a Christmas gift, but also as a family gift, and I have a soon to be 1-year old nephew. I would like to see the White Sox at Target Field, but have no idea what the hell they do with infants. It may be different between stadiums, but I imagine it's pretty much the same throughout. Anyways, does anyone know the Sox policy on this? I imagine the Twins is the same, but want atleast a little confirmation.
