QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 01:42 PM) Bob Nightengale said that? Oh damn, I guess I don't want Haren then. My opinion sucks. It wouldn't matter if the interim GM or the homeless guy on the street said it, Dan Haren is going to cost a lot to acquire, and that's not an opinion. There is a huge demand for quality starting pitching in the league, and, whether you'd like to admit it or not, a 4.38 ERA is a quality starting pitcher, even at $12.5 mill, considering the success he's had in the past and that much of that inflated ERA was largely due to the first 2 months of the season (when he gave up 16 homers in 74 innings). In his last 7 starts, he's put up a 2.92 ERA and allowed only 3 home runs in 49.1 IP.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 01:22 PM) You don't know that. Obviously I don't want to trade Hudson, Flowers, Viciedo, or other top 'spects for Haren, unless it means LaRoche + Haren. Just because I would like to see us get Dan Haren, doesn't mean I think we should clean out our farm for them. Cliff Lee he is not. https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/18009235969 "Plenty of scouts on hand in Arizona. D-backs are listening to all offers, but Dan Haren likely to stay unless AZ blown away by offer." And I would argue he's every bit as good as Lee, and even if he's not, he's going to cost more to acquire than Lee simply because he's locked up for another 3 years beyond this at very reasonable prices (something like $12.5 mill this year and next year, and a $15.5 mill team option for 2012). Dan Haren is going to be ridiculously expensive. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 01:27 PM) That's be the steal of 2010, depending on what we give up. Dan Haren is a beast. He's having a down year, but his peripherals look almost like what they were these previous years. His 3.84 FIP and his 3.46 xFIP aren't too much worse than what they were last year. I think the sabermetric people would love the trade, everybody else will hate it. Just like the Rios trade last year. They'd have to give up a ton, and it's just not worth it, considering the needs of the offense opposed to the needs of the pitching staff.

Jesus, what is with the thought of the Sox adding a big name pitcher? If the Sox add another starting pitcher to the bunch, it's not going to be Haren or Oswalt or Lee, it's either going to be a low-cost, innings eater of a pitcher or a diamond in the rough kind of guy. Ben Sheets or Jeremy Guthrie or, s***, even Jake Westbrook. Williams understands that the Sox biggest weakness is the offense, and that spending an extraordinary amount on a starting pitcher when the Sox 1-2-3 is perfectly fine is dumb.
-
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 01:10 PM) Because he is much better than what he is pitching right now, and his value "should" be low right now. Get him on the cheap and see if he can turn back into form. Remember Alex Rios? Had a good track record, had one bad year, we got him on the cheap, and now he is back to dominant. The Sox got Alex Rios for free. Had the Sox given up a bevy of prospects for Alex Rios last year, like the Sox would have to do for Dan Haren this year, people would be ripping the deal to shreds. Sox on the board. Kotsay would be wise to get a hit.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 12:36 PM) That's with Peavy on the roster though. They talked about this the day before he got hurt, and how our player projections placed us at the top, but the schedule projection had Twins at like 45 pct, and Sox at 25ish Yeah, I kind of figured so. I still can't believe the Twins are that low though...apparently they don't have their updated projections with Cliff Lee in the rotation.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 02:39 AM) Sucks that you can't face the truth. Keep on loving some mediocre, career minor league firstbaseman. I think you just described half of the board in regard to Ross Gload.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 10:24 AM) Latest Pecota Playoff Odds So the Sox apparently have a better shot at winning the Central than do the Tigers, even with the Sox in 2nd place right now. That's neat.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 11:28 AM) How about "Lillibridge" why does every s***ty player that comes through town need to get a nickname? It also doesn't f***ing count if you're brainstorming nicknames, it needs to be an organic process that develops over time. Thinking up a "good one" for a player defeats the entire purpose. your new nickname is also booger

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 11:26 AM) Good, then he should come in on the cheap. why would you want to trade for someone that is pitching like s***? Leaving his pitches up along with less velocity...sure, that sounds like it'll be a blast at USCF. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jul 8, 2010 -> 11:33 AM) ...and a change of scenery would help PLUS he would have an advantage on AL hitters most of whom have never faced him. He pitched three years in Oakland, and this is his third year in Arizona. He's faced pretty much everyone that can be faced. Most guys in the AL, unless they've come up in the last 3 years, have faced him at some point. http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-ind...&as=pitcher

The silver lining about Hudson/2nd half schedule...
witesoxfan replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Detroit plays as a hitter's park, and the Tigers offense is pretty good. Any of those matchups with Detroit are going to prove difficult for Hudson. The one great thing about Detroit's lineup is that, outside of Boesch, they really don't have a huge threat from the left side of the plate, and one of Hudson's biggest weaknesses in the majors could be getting lefties out. That's one reason why keeping him as far away from the Twins as possible would be a great thing. -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 11:23 PM) He's hot, but let's not get carried away. I was talking about Viciedo. Lillbridge f***ing blows.
-
Do the Sox really have to give him up to get someone? He seems like he could be a monster.
-
Getting a run this inning would be good. Then give it to Putz, then Thornton, then Jenks, and go play again tomorrow.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 03:43 PM) We do that almost everyday already. But atleast with Konerko, Rios, and with a resurgent Quentin, there's some semblance of a major league lineup. I'm talking like Pierre - LF Vizquel - DH Kotsay - 1B Jones - RF Viciedo - 3B Ramirez - SS Castro - C Lillibridge - CF Beckham - 2B and you'd let Marquez throw 150 pitches if that's what it took to get him through 6 innings. Then you could give the ball to Linebrink for the remaining 3 and hope that his arm falls off and you can put him on the DL.
-
QUOTE (The Beast @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 03:41 PM) What pitchers are available and who in the hell would the Sox give up? Why not give Torres a shot in the rotation before Hudson? Because Dan Hudson is a much, much better pitcher than Carlos Torres.
-
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 03:37 PM) Marquez was scheduled to pitch tonight for Charlotte, so he is rested. Maybe start him tonight and push everyone back a day? No, if you start Marquez, it's the last day before the break, and you put out the Sunday-est of all Sunday lineups, giving as many guys as you can a 4 day break, and hoping you get lucky and pull out a win.

Mariano Rivera - A great illustration of his dominance
witesoxfan replied to The Ginger Kid's topic in The Diamond Club
I think it's way easier with Mo simply because his success is largely because of one pitch. With a guy like Pedro, you would have to deal with his fastball, slider, cuve, and changeup, and that'd be much harder to do. Mariano Rivera threw his cutter 92.9% of the time last year, and it was still an absolutely lethal pitch. That's insane. -
The good thing about Dunn is that, if he weren't resigned, his departure would ensure 2 more draft picks for next years draft. You always have to like high draft picks.

Your 2010 White Sox All Star- Matt Thornton
witesoxfan replied to smalls2598's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 6, 2010 -> 06:06 PM) Is Matt our new closer? Has this been discussed? He is really really good right now. I would think Oz would ride Matt for a while. Make Bobby the setup guy. I LOVE Bobby but nobody can argue how dominant Thornton looks. My god he's good. Matt Thornton has more value to this club than as the token 9th inning guy. It's sad that baseball has come to the point where your closer, who should be your best relief pitcher, can't come into the 7th inning because you need him to pitch in the 9th. If there is an absolutely crucial spot where a closer needs to pitch, he should be prepared for that and should pitch. As such, it's really not that big of a deal to me that the two best relief pitchers in the White Sox bullpen are not closers. Bobby does a good enough job at getting 3 outs while not giving up the lead that he can hang onto that "guy who pitches in the 9th inning when the team is leading" role. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 12:31 PM) Source? Link? If true, I think if anything they are just trying to up his value, and not use another option on Hudson or Torres. Or they might want to let Hudson make another start in AAA, and then pitch in the future's game and AAA All-Star game to try and increase his value in any manner that they can.

QUOTE (girlslikebaseballtoo#26 @ Jul 6, 2010 -> 06:10 PM) It's definitely not easy. It takes A LOT of communication, trust and love to make it work ..being the fiancee of a player isn't easy. Knowing alllll those girls are not only willing to get with your man, but that they would do anything just to do it ..it's hard, but Chase makes it easier for me ..he doesn't drink, or party and if an ant crosses the sidewalk beside him and it's female ..he tells me about it! lol ..He doesn't like being away from me any more than I like him to be gone, but Baseball has been a part of his life longer than I have and I'll be damned if he's not going to see this thing through to however far it takes him. I have to support him NO MATTER WHAT. This is f***ing awesome. You are f***ing awesome. Chase is f***ing awesome. Baseball is f***ing awesome.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 11:36 AM) If an outfielder goes down, Gartrell gets that call, or maybe De Aza, ahead of Kroeger. Last year, it would have been Kroeger. Kroeger has put up big numbers in AAA in years past, so I think they figure he's still that good hitter somewhere behind the numbers. Or maybe he's just done, hard to tell. Oh I agree, but I don't think you want Gartrell or De Aza being a backup 1B. Of course, Viciedo can do that too, and Konerko rarely DHs, so it's a generally moot point anyways.

QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 08:47 AM) Granted i only saw him once, in Columbus this year, but he looked the part and was very impressive in the way he carried himself at the plate and in the field. Also, what's the deal with Kroeger? Is he Charlotte's version of Kotsay. He seems to bat 3-4-5 every game and i have yet to see his average above .200. Minor league lineups are generally made differently than MLB lineups, and they generally want to maximize ABs for those that they feel may have future value to the club. That's probably all they've done with Kroeger. And he is about the only Kotsay insurance the Sox have, though it's not hard to find pinch hit extraordinaires floating around.

The GF got me tickets to the Sox/Twins game in Minnesota on the 17th. I told her that, if we're gonna go up there, we may as well get tickets for 2 games, so I'm likely going to be catching a couple Sox games after the break. First games in 6 years, wee!

QUOTE (IamtheHBOMB @ Jul 7, 2010 -> 12:06 AM) It's nice to win a series against the Angels as they always seem to play well against us. I wonder if Beckham will continue to ride the pine? The Sox haven't won the series yet.
