I think we should bring up Beckham immediately
witesoxfan replied to dabears32's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (whitesoxmanager @ May 5, 2009 -> 09:49 PM) once again...2 words: Derrick Rose. maybe we shoulda put him in some minors.. how the heckel you know somebody isnt a superstar in the makings? like MLB pitchers are so overpowering...what are you all afraid of? he is going to botch groundballs? we already do that... maybe NEVER be clutch or go in slumps? we already do that... SOMEBODY PLEASE BACK UP WHY HE ISNT READY YET. GIVE SOME CONCRETE REASONS! Basketball is a pretty cut and dry sport. There are nuances to the game that take getting used to, but if you are talented, you'll be able to make the transition with relative ease. Baseball is a much more complicated game. The object is to hit a ball that is less than 3 inches across in any direction, while it changes speeds between, say, 67 and 97 MPH, depending on the pitcher and pitch, and breaks every which way - running in, running away, breaking down, breaking down and away, breaking just away - and all the while, those pitches are different speeds as well. On top of that, you should be able to have atleast some grasp of the strike zone, which is generally the belly button to the knees as well as a foot and a half so across too. Oh, and there's defense too, which, coincidentally, both Rose and Beckham have struggled or currently are struggling with at the moment. That, and Gordon Beckham isn't nearly as talented as Derrick Rose, relatively speaking. -
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 5, 2009 -> 10:19 PM) Can someone elaborate on this "Dye incident"? JD got hit on the knuckles with a fastball and there was initial thought that he had broken his hand and would be out a while. It's fine now.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 5, 2009 -> 10:14 PM) No doubt about it. The two best FA signings to this point have easily been Orlando Hudson and Raul Ibanez. The Ibanez signing could be ugly by the end of it, but he's been absolutely fantastic so far.

oh, and f*** I won't make excuses after this one

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 5, 2009 -> 05:46 PM) How does one end up with a lower OBP than AVG? Nix had that going last night. Canucks just scored again. AVG = H/AB OBP = (H+BB+HBP)/(AB+BB+HBP+SF) if you have no walks or HBP, but do have a sacrifice fly, your OBP is going to be less than your average. That's a very simple explanation, but that's how it works. 3 hits, 0 BB, 0 HBP, 10 ABs, 1 SF AVG = .300 OBP = .273

Normally HBP are basically looked off in regards to OBP. For Quentin, they are probably the most important aspect. Taking out his HBPs last year, his OBP drops 22 points (from .394 to .372). Without them this year, going into the game, his OBP drops over 40 points (.346 down to .304). Assuming Quentin stays healthy, 30 or more isn't out of the realm of possibility.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 4, 2009 -> 05:19 PM) Who are these bandaids? I enjoy people who make claims and then do not back them up. The White Sox like kielbasa! They also do not sushi! They would much prefer if it was cooked!

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 5, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) Can't disagree. Betemit might still come around, but he is a role player with not a real good glove. Swisher played an excellent 1B when needed all three OF positions and could DH. So he pouted last season. Seems like management should have kicked him in the butt rather than get rid of it They also needed some of that money to sign Viciedo. It's also only April. I have little doubt Swisher is going to put up better numbers this year overall, but he's not some superstar that would greatly effect the team. The problem is that the club isn't using Betemit as they should right now. Even with mediocre defense, there is no reason he should not have been playing 3B last night (with all due respect to Nix, who did get a hit).

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ May 5, 2009 -> 02:56 PM) Rodgers > Cutler And I'm a Bears fan. Jay Cutler has a year and a half experience on Aaron Rodgers. Jay Cutler is the best QB in the NFC North. -
QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 5, 2009 -> 01:42 PM) Samardjia (sp?) could be one of the most overhyped players ever. I remember ESPN wetting themselves over that signing. nothing about him suggests he is a good pitcher. I doubt he'll be anything more than a mediocre middle reliever, but HE PLAYED FOR NOTRE DAMEZ OMG

looks so good though

QUOTE (WCSox @ May 5, 2009 -> 01:00 PM) Not to mention unloading Javy's salary, which is above market value in this economy and is a bit high for a guy who can't get it done in pressure situations. After his big-game failures in Chicago and NY, and his average year in Arizona, it's not surprising that Kenny didn't get a Chris Young-type player in return. To be fair, Tyler Flowers could very easily become as valuable or more so than Chris Young has been (or was projected to be). That type of power usually doesn't come from a guy behind the plate. All the Sox have to do is hope he can contribute sooner than Saltalamacchia.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 5, 2009 -> 12:54 PM) Too bad it's not 2002. I'll take him in 2009. He'll put butts in the seats and he'll be an adequate 5th starter.

QUOTE (lostfan @ May 5, 2009 -> 10:41 AM) I wouldn't encourage anyone to copy Ichiro's stance/swing... ever Jeff Bagwell and Frank Thomas come to mind as well. Jeff Bagwell in particular actually.

I remember JAG

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ May 5, 2009 -> 05:13 AM) Not to mention they are in PIT'S and BAL's division. That doesn't take away from them improving, it takes away from them winning games. There's a distinct difference between that. That said, I did say with Carson they have a chance at being .500. The previous 4 seasons with Carson as the QB, they went 8-8, 11-5, 8-8, and 7-9. I'd say .500 is within the realm of possibility, even without TJ. They did sign Laveranues Coles, who is still a pretty solid receiver, and they have a bit of talent among their WR corps. -
oooo neat arrow

QUOTE (T R U @ May 4, 2009 -> 08:43 PM) I don't think their pick is going to be a top 5 like most people seem to think.. Kyle Orton isn't a bad QB, but he isn't a great one either. Point being, its not like they are starting a rookie or some scrub they signed to place hold. They have a decent QB in place, McDaniels thinks his system is going to carry on just fine. They have another 1st anyways, and he prolly thinks they aren't gonna be that bad. KC and Oakland aren't going to be that good, I don't think its a stretch that Denver can be 7-9 or 8-8 this year. Especially with games against KC 2X, Oakland 2X, Cincinnati, and Cleveland I could actually see Cinci surprising a few people this year. They went 4-11-1 last year, and that was with Palmer out for most of the year. If he's healthy, I'd say they have a chance at being .500. -
QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ May 4, 2009 -> 08:36 PM) I am not holding my breath on them spending money next off-season. As far as KW, I understand not having money to really improve the team, but some of these roster decisions were again made to stroke his ego and I'm sure the smug bastard is hoping for another "I told you so" opportunity at the end of the season. Whatever. I still enjoy seeing that quote

Fields to sit one day, Nix to start at 3B

QUOTE (BobDylan @ May 4, 2009 -> 05:15 PM) Maybe. But still not ideal. I wouldn't complain if Ozzie put him there. f*** it, put Quentin there. I most definitely agree he's not ideal, but he is fast, doesn't strike out much, and hits for a good average. I think he's the best option on the current roster. -
QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ May 4, 2009 -> 12:12 PM) I did call 4th place back in the winter! This team is far from anything good, too many bandaids on many open wounds. Who are these bandaids?

QUOTE (BobDylan @ May 4, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) I don't consider him a #2 hitter and don't think I ever will. Not his fault, though. There aren't any other options. I think Alexei would be a better option. -
Honestly, this probably won't make Ozzie nor the rest of the organization happy.
