Baseball Prospectus has Sox down for 74 wins
witesoxfan replied to palehose23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 10, 2009 -> 08:55 AM) They did say the Sox would lose 90 in 2007, but they have also been wrong before. The problem with depending on young players asking them to perform at a level they have not performed, is some, if not most, are bound to fail. 2008 was an exception. Hopefully, those guys can continue to grow or at least maintain their performance levels. One thing I do know, is the White Sox should have better team than they have had the last few years if they ever get back to a $120 million payroll. And Will Carroll gloated about it, even though he basically threw a dart and it ended up being correctly. He said the pitching staff would be absolutely horrendous and the offense would put up it's same usual numbers. The pitching staff was mediocre, but the offense was the reason the 2007 White Sox failed. I find it hard to take someone seriously when he says "I was right" when it was really dumb luck that he was right, because all of his other projections for that season pretty much failed. Anyways, I see 70-74 wins as about the absolute worst the Sox could do, barring injuries. I still see them right around .500 with the possibility of winning more. -
QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 9, 2009 -> 11:06 AM) Yeah, those weren't that interesting, but only 2 or 3 minutes and no Ed. Ed would make it better. I like them more because they don't have Ed. I also do not like Ed in the least.

Is KW actually watching the Dow Jones or being a jerk?

QUOTE (gosox41 @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 08:36 PM) Not sure if that number is accurate, but I bet at least 1/3 of that profit came in 2005. Bob I would bet most of it came in 2006, with 2007 right behind that. The Sox damn near drew 3 million fans in 2006. 05 is actually the worst number in the past 4 years, excluding the playoffs. -
QUOTE (Elgin Slim @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 08:04 PM) Manny is probably a juicer. I was watching a special in 2006 called "Flamethrowers" in which they showed every No-Hitter/Perfect Game since 1980.I was watching Jim Abbott's No-Hitter,and it was Manny's rookie year. One of the things that stood out to me is the Sosa-like transformation of Manny's body. He was about as skinny or skinnier than Sosa was on the Sox. People can add weight and muscle mass as they get older. It's not uncommon. Ramirez was 22 years old in 1994. Rookie Card 500th homer I don't see a big enough difference. He wore a tighter uniform early in his career and as he's aged, he's gone to a real baggy like uniform. That probably explains some of it too.

QUOTE (BearSox @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) It is amazing how bad he has gotten from being one of the games elite players. I think it's safe to assume he was PED user. I don't. Dude's been in the majors for 12 full seasons. I think the only thing it's safe to assume is that his body has worn down a ton because of how long he's been in the majors. I see him bouncing back with the Rangers. Jaramillo is a hell of a good hitting coach and he has revived the careers of several good hitters who were thought to be long gone. That ballpark helps matters too.

NY Daily News: Sox make Abreu 1-Year Offer
witesoxfan replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Feb 8, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) If someone can sign Abreu for $3M then why would they take Dye who is making about $12M? Reading these post one would think Dye should be valued at about $150K for all the respect he is given.. Dye is superior to Abreu IMO. Not that Bobby isn't a good player, but if he is still unsigned and only worth $3M then maybe there is something more wrong than just the economy? because Dye is a completely different hitter than Bobby Abreu. Abreu is average/on-base with a bit of power. Dye is all about power. That's why teams would still trade for him. -

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 01:17 PM) I'm actually really excited about this signing. The Steelers have had two fullback types in Gary Russell and Carrie Davis returning kicks all year, it was miserable to watch. I honestly don't really know how the Steelers won the super bowl this year, just crazy. Steelers had a very mediocre offensive line, horrendous punting and kick returns, and a head coach that was basically a figurehead. I guess the city needs to erect a statue to Dick Lebeau and Ben. He is a very similar player to Darren Sproles. Rotoworld has him listed at like 5'9, but he's probably 5'6 or so because I looked down on him walking through campus my freshman year, and I'm 5'10. He'll probably have a short career in the NFL though because he will be 28 by the time the season starts (if he hasn't turned 28 already, I don't know his exact birthdate). I just remember that the first game I ever went to, he fielded the opening kickoff of the season and ran it back for a TD (given, it was against a D3 school, but it was still pretty badass). It's a solid signing and I'm not sure how he wasn't signed before this. -
QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Feb 6, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) I didn't stand until after the ball had cleared the fence. I thought for sure it was a triple - glad I was wrong. First thing I yelled off the bat was "Get three!" I screamed when it cleared the fence and did a little jig in my living room.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 1, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) "I don't think that taste is there." Wow. just reading it sends chills down my spine. I still do this day can't believe that ball left the yard...I was sure it was going to land on the warning track with Pods ending up on 3rd. Just eerie.

What should be brought up in Thomas's HoF case leads to character...he was known as a "whiny" player, but he was like one of two active baseball players to actually help in the Mitchell Report, and I believe the other was Giambi, though I don't recall exactly.

THE CARDINALS WON THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!!!
witesoxfan replied to Steve9347's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 03:17 PM) And I have yet to see definitive evidence that either of his toes DIDN'T touch in the end zone. The photo in post #2 of this thread holds just as much water as the one in post #1, and since it was called a touchdown on the field and there was no conclusive evidence either way, you have to stick with it. I'm frankly shocked by the sour grapes so many people (not you perhaps, but there are some people who fit this description) who were bandwagon Cardinal fans on Sunday have about this game. If Arizona's defense could have come up with a stop, they'd have won the Super Bowl. If they could have just held Pittsburgh to a field goal, they'd have had a shot in overtime. If Kurt Warner properly reads a zone blitz at the end of the first half, Arizona probably wins the Super Bowl too. Yet everybody blames the officials. In the NFL or MLB, I've never believed you can blame a game solely on the officials. I do it all the time in the heat of the moment anyways, but there's always things you can do to make up for it. The Cardinals, due to one huge mistake and terrible defense on the final possession, blew that game for themselves. That does not change the fact that the officiating was pretty terrible throughout. It little effect on the game itself, just that it was terrible. -

Twins say that Crede looks only 75% healthy. I'm sure it's been mentioned on here since it was on Rotoworld, but funny nonetheless. Boras, of course, says Crede is perfectly healthy. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/39...QL7PQLanchO7DiU

QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 10:28 PM) Maybe I was too young to understand Franks unique style of hitting. Or maybe I am tying my father's views of his style of hitting too closely into his actual style but I somewhat copied the hurt in my later stages of baseball and into high school. I saw him as a guy who had a great approach. He had a great eye and looked to drive the ball to right-centerfield. If he is going to preach that to some of our younger pull hitters with k issues, then I am all for it. I don't think he had a unique style, but I think he was one of the few who could pull it off to the level he did. Idk...just my thought. Maybe you guys can share some things though. I agree with everything, it's just that he did not have mechanics you'd like to teach to younger ballplayers. Frank was all about putting power into the ball, and lifting his right leg as he swings. I just looked at some video and it doesn't appear to be as bad as I remembered, but it's still not something you want to put into every hitter's mind. The thought behind it though - the transfer of weight from the back leg to the front leg as you swing - is fantastic, and that's where all of his power came from. If you put 270+ pounds of weight into a baseball, it's going to go a long ways. Of course, if you are Alexei Ramirez and you try and duplicate that, you'll have a much different result. If anything, it would be a good drill for some hitters to do just to get used to the feeling, but it shouldn't be duplicated unless you have enough muscle or mass behind the ball.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 05:15 PM) I'd love to see the Big Hurt as batting coach but I doubt that'll happen With Frank's unique style of hitting, I don't want him teaching any of my hitters how to hit a baseball. How to go about attacking a pitcher, perhaps, but not a batting coach.

QUOTE (SEALgep @ Feb 5, 2009 -> 06:10 AM) Not complain about everything... And I do like FT I was speaking tongue firmly in cheek too. That whole situation was still very messy though.

Joe Crede gave the White Sox 1 crucial month in the 2005 season. You know who else did? Frank Thomas. He got b****ed out, and his agent isn't even Boras! What's a brother gotta do.

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Feb 4, 2009 -> 11:25 PM) Its easier to stay healthy in a backup role though, Which is only reason why Id consider Stewart. Is it odd that it feels just last season the Twins OF was Shannon Stewart, Jaque Jones, and Torri Hunter all a pain in the whitesox ass. easier to stay healthy, yes, but not to play CF, even short-term, when you haven't played the position (other than 6 random games in one season (with the A's, which makes sense)) in 10 years.
